Nick Damici and Connor Paolo in Stake Land (2010)

FAQ

Stake Land

FAQ

A vampire epidemic is sweeping the United States. Somewhere in the South, young Martin (Connor Paolo) witnessed the gruesome slaughter of his family by a vampire, but he himself was saved thanks to the intervention of a vampire hunter known to him only as Mister (Nick Damici). Mister takes Martin under his wing, teaching him how to kill vampires as the two of them head north to Canada where New Eden promises them a safe haven. Along the way, they fight vampires and encounter other survivors, e.g., a nun known only as Sister (Kelly McGillis), pregnant Belle (Danielle Harris), and Marine Willie (Sean Nelson), along with The Brotherhood, a fundamentalist militia headed by Jebedia Loven (Michael Cerveris) that is almost as bad as the vampires. Still, they continue North, never knowing whether New Eden actually exists or, as it's rumored, to be populated by cannibals, but knowing that whatever awaits them, it has to be better than what they're leaving behind.

Stake Land was filmed from a screenplay written by principle star Nick Damici and director Jim Mickle.

Almost to Canada, Martin and Mister stop at the "last chance before the wilderness," a roadside restaurant run by a young girl named Peggy (Bonnie Dennison), who has survived there since her mother was killed by vampires. That night, Martin and Peggy, who are instantly attracted to each other, keep watch together. A vampire approaches, and Peggy introduces him as Walter, a boy she once went to school with but at whom she's never been able to get a clean shot, so Martin goes outside and finishes him off. Later that night, Martin and Penny sleep while Mister watches them pensively. The next morning, Martin wakes up to find that Mister has gone, leaving behind the pickup and his death-head necklace hanging from the side mirror. Martin and Peggy fill up the pickup with supplies and continue heading north until they come to a sign that says: "Welcome to Canada...Bienvenue", over which has been painted "New Eden." Martin and Penny look at each other hopefully.

Mister doesn't say why he left. Most viewers conclude that, when Mister saw Martin and Peggy handling Walter by themselves, he knew that they were able to defend themselves on their own and didn't need Mister around any more. The general consensus is that Mister most likely went back into the U.S. to kill more vampires, train more vampire hunters, and lead more survivors north to New Eden. A handful of viewers wonder whether Mister might have been infected by his fight with Jebedia and knew his time was limited.
