David Beckham has shared new details about his wife Victoria Beckham’s upcoming Netflix documentary, revealing that convincing her to take part wasn’t easy.
Speaking at Mip London, Beckham explained that despite the success of his own Netflix series Beckham, Victoria was hesitant about stepping into the spotlight for her own docuseries.
“It took a minute to try and get her to agree with it,” he admitted. “It wasn’t something that was easy. I think I’m the only one who could convince her, and I did, eventually.”
The documentary, which is being produced by Beckham’s Studio 99 and directed by Becoming filmmaker Nadia Hallgren, will take fans behind the scenes of Victoria’s journey from her days as a Spice Girl to her rise as a fashion designer. Beckham emphasized how hard his wife has worked to build her brand over the past two decades.

David Beckham previewed Victoria Beckham’s upcoming Netflix docuseries at Mip London on Tuesday, telling the streamer’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria that “it’s really special” — but getting the former Spice Girl to participate, even after the success of his “Beckham” doc, took some convincing.
“It took a minute to try and get her to agree with it,” the former soccer star and Emmy-winning producer said. “It wasn’t something that was easy. I think I’m the only one who could convince her and I did, eventually.”
Beckham said that viewers will see Victoria “in a different light” in the upcoming doc, which hails from his Studio 99 banner is being helmed by “Becoming” director Nadia Hallgren. The as-yet-untitled series started production in August and will follow Beckham’s journey from Spice Girls superstardom in the ‘90s to modern fashion maven with her eponymous brand.

Nostalgia baiting has become so common, it’s erupted into nano-genres all its own. Take documentary filmmaking. Where once there were arguments over what was left out, what was put in, and what constituted unbiased storytelling, now the landscape is dominated by celebrity self-profiles where viewers can consider themselves lucky if the subject of the (puff) piece isn’t also a producer with final cut. What do “Beckham,” “The Greatest Love Story Never Told,” and “Sly” have to do with nostalgia? Typically, to get famous enough to merit your own “documentary,” you need a body of work that people already love — hence, even series like “The Last Dance” or films like “Steve! (Martin): A Documentary in 2 Pieces” traffic in nostalgia, tempting viewers to revisit the glory days of such-and-such or so-and-so via interviews with the talking heads of today.

When Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum stepped foot on the sidewalk in front of Hollywood’s Egyptian Theatre for the world premiere of Netflix’s Starting 5, an announcer’s voice cut through the music to announce the arrival of a “world champion” over the loud speakers. Yes, there was an announcer and a deejay at the high-energy Sept. 23 premiere, which featured a hardcourt in place of a traditional red carpet and rows of basketballs to set the scene.

Netflix saw profits shoot up in the UK last year while its tax bill doubled.
The streamer, which for just the third year was publishing revenue from UK subscribers via its Netflix Services UK subsidiary, saw operating profit rise by 70%, or £22M ($28M), to £53.7M ($70M). Of equally good news for the SVoD, Netflix’s “member base” aka subscribers rose by 7%, double the increase on the previous year, while there was a rise in the “average number of paid memberships and an increase in average monthly revenue per paying membership,” according to the Companies House filing.
The filing doesn’t give away subs numbers but ratings body Barb’s latest report from Q2 reported that Netflix was in 17.1 million UK homes, up by about 400,000 from Q1.
The results pertain to a year in which Netflix released big UK hits including the final seasons of The Crown and Top Boy, and the Beckham documentary.

When Imagine Documentaries president Sara Bernstein pitched New York Post gossip columnist Cindy Adams on making a film about her career, even the veteran journalist didn’t understand why Bernstein was interested. “What do you want to make a doc about me for?” Adams asked the “Jim Henson: Idea Man” producer. “Everybody has a documentary. My dentist has a documentary!”
Good line — and she must have a great dentist.
An incomplete list of this year’s celebrity docs includes Simone Biles, Celine Dion, Steve Martin, Roger Federer, Stevie van Zandt, Brian Eno, Frida Kahlo, Devo, Christopher Reeve, Sue Bird, Andrea Bocelli, Elton John, Martha Stewart, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Paul Anka, Pharrell Williams, and Bruce Springsteen.
The appetite seems nearly endless, but producers say it’s increasingly difficult to find famous people whose lives haven’t flashed before our eyes. Said Bernstein, “The challenge today is, who hasn’t had a documentary?...

“It worried me and it made me nervous and it made Victoria nervous,” Beckham said of the four-part doc, which dropped on the streamer last year and quickly became a hit. “I hated almost every moment of making it…it was very difficult.”
“It took me a long time to come to terms with the fact that I was going to make it but there was a few reasons why we wanted to make it,” he continued. “When I retired I wasn’t ready to talk about my career and what had happened. Through the pandemic, it’s when documentaries really exploded and it was coming up to the 10-year anniversary of my retirement from football.”

Former soccer star and style icon David Beckham graced a London industry conference stage to discuss how nervous he was to film his Emmy-winning documentary Beckham and gush over his wife.
He began by gifting Jane Featherstone, founder and co-cco of production company Sister Pictures, a pot of marmalade. “I made this for our 25th wedding anniversary, this label,” Beckham said, referencing his partner, ex-Spice Girl Victoria, “so this one is called ‘Sticky Vicky’.”
“I had to feel uncomfortable to make the documentary that we made,” he began on the doc, which took audiences through his career as a frenzied life in the spotlight as a footballer for Manchester United and a highly publicized relationship with Victoria. Beckham was met with critical acclaim when it dropped on Netflix.

David Beckham unpacked the details of what was going on behind the scenes that led up to telling his wife, Victoria Beckham, to be upfront about her family’s background during the filming of their Netflix documentary “Beckham.” He added that the incident infuriated director Fisher Stevens.
“He was angry. He was angry with me. Fisher, I love Fisher. He apparently wanted me out the house, and that particular day was Victoria’s first day of filming,” Beckham explained during his interview with Sean Evans for “Hot Ones.”
“When she was sat there, the door was closed, and I was about to leave for the office, but I made a coffee, and then I saw a spare set of headphones so I put the headphones on and I heard Fisher talking about the whole, our parents and our upbringing,” Beckham continued.

Netflix has announced its newest sports series, Starting 5, which will premiere on October 9, 2024. The 10-part series provides an intense, behind-the-scenes look at the 2023-24 NBA season through the eyes of five of the league’s biggest players – Jimmy Butler (Miami Heat), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers), Domantas Sabonis (Sacramento Kings), and Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics).
The series captures their battles on and off the court as they chase greatness, push through injuries, and balance the demands of family and legacy. James pushes himself harder than ever to stay healthy – and dominant – in his 21st season, while Edwards electrifies with his rapid rise.

Butler’s relentless drive propels the Heat, Sabonis anchors the Kings with his versatile play, and Tatum leads the Celtics in their quest for a record 18th championship. Starting 5 delivers an unfiltered view of life at the pinnacle of professional basketball.

Nine years after “The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst” won the Emmy for Best Documentary Series, its previously unplanned second season is up for the same award. Unlike last time when it stood out as the only crime series in its lineup, it is now joined in that regard by both “Telemarketers” and “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.”
Unlike most Primetime Emmys, Best Documentary Series is a non-competitive area award that is bestowed upon any nominee that earns the approval of 90% of the members of the TV academy’s documentary peer group. This means that the five programs in the 2024 lineup are not vying for a single trophy and could all potentially prevail. However, if no nominees hit said 90% threshold, only the highest-rated one will win.

They’re actually deeply authentic people, and they spoke absolutely from the heart,” reveals “Beckham” producer John Battsek. For our recent webchat he adds, “There’s nothing more disarming than that, as nothing dispels preconceptions that are based on nothing more than the person truthfully telling you who they are, how it felt, an experience they had and the impact that it had on them,” adding that “it’s exciting to be nominated five times and kind of gratifying, given how much care and effort and skill and everything everyone put into making the series. So it’s very nice to be recognized that way,” as “a huge amount of very skillful people put a vast amount of blood and sweat into making this series.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Emmy-winning editor Michael Harte (“Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie”) refuses all credit for the most iconic edit in Fisher Stevens’ docuseries “Beckham.” That would be David Beckham calmly forcing his wife, Victoria, to admit that her father drove her to school in a Rolls Royce, a sequence that was immediately memefied.
“You gotta give massive credit to Fisher,” Harte told IndieWire. “That scene is, if anything, a representation of how good he was at getting people to relax in front of the camera. And also Tim Cragg, our cinematographer, who had the wisdom to keep the camera going back and forth. The person that deserves the least amount of credit is me, because it’s probably the least amount of editing in the whole series!”

Netflix is back on top. The streamer slightly increased its Emmy nomination tally in 2024, leading all outlets with 107 — up four from last year’s 103, and taking over the top slot held by HBO/Max last year (which dropped from 127 to 91). And Netflix chief content officer Bela Bajaria was in a celebratory mood when Variety spoke with her on Wednesday morning.
Although Netflix has had bigger Emmy nomination years (its 160 in 2020 is still an all-time record), Bajaria said she was happy to see this year’s tally spread out across 35 different titles, including “The Crown” (with 18 noms), “Ripley” (13), “Baby Reindeer” (11), “3 Body Problem” (6) and “Beckham” (5).

In a TV awards cycle increasingly dominated by the HBO-Netflix horse race — which, for HBO, technically includes steamer Max — it was the other premium cable network and its Hulu offerings that came out tops among individual programs during Wednesday’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.
Driven by the year’s two most nominated projects, the drama Shogun and reigning comedy The Bear, FX narrowly beat HBO for No. 2 status among all nominated platforms. It marks the first time FX has ever come so close to topping total Emmy nominations, with Netflix walking away with an easy win this year on the backs of its sprawling slate. FX’s No. 2 status among prestige outlets is all the more compelling when you look at the breakdown of actual programs. Its 93 nominations, which topped HBO and Max’s collective haul by just two,...

While television had been a part of each past IndieWire Honors celebration, the medium took center stage on the evening of Thursday, June 6, with an event that celebrated the creators and stars of such well-regarded shows as “Abbott Elementary,” “Expats,” “Fellow Travelers,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” and “True Detective: Night Country.”
Even before the awards ceremony began, as talent started filing into the Citizen News venue in the heart of Hollywood, it was a marvel to see “Palm Royale” star and Vanguard Award recipient Carol Burnett hold court as fellow honorees like “Under the Bridge” producer/star Riley Keough, recipient of the Maverick Award, and “Abbott Elementary” creator/star Quinta Brunson, recipient of the Visionary Award (and whom Burnett presented an Emmy to in January), came to greet the comedy legend.

The first ever TV-only version of IndieWire Honors took place Thursday, June 6.
“This will be another extraordinary IndieWire Honors, the awards evening that isn’t like any other,” Dana Harris-Bridson, IndieWire’s senior VP and Editor in Chief said when announcing the event. “It’s our first one dedicated to the best of TV and we’re proud to have an opportunity to celebrate these artists.”
Alex Edelman hosted the event, which handed out awards to 13 stars of the TV season picked by IndieWire’s staff. At the awards ceremony at Citizen News in Hollywood, there was a cocktail party vibe that allowed guests to mingle, celebrate each other’s work, and even sneak a glance at honoree and all-around icon Carol Burnett, who accepted the Vanguard Award for her performance on Apple TV+’s “Palm Royale.”
Dakota Fanning received the Performance Award for her stellar work in Netflix’s “Ripley.

“Is your desk very messy or is it very clean?”
This was the question host Alex Edelman asked renaissance man, actor, filmmaker, and documentarian Fisher Stevens before welcoming him to the stage to accept the Magnify Award at the 2024 IndieWire Honors. It’s a fair ask, as Stevens remains one of the busiest men in Hollywood and abroad. He’s a jack-of-all-trades, starring in films from Wes Anderson, as well as being a part of the hit series “Succession,” producing movies like “Swimfan” and “Uptown Girls,” and taking on...

“What are you doing a fucking series on David Beckham for?”
It’s a question director Fisher Stevens said he fielded multiple times as he told friends and colleagues he had been courted to make what has become Netflix’s most-watched documentary of the past year. In discussion with IndieWire over Zoom, the multi-talented filmmaker revealed that he, too, was surprised at first to be approached with the idea for “Beckham,” and even a bit resistant to taking it on.
