Kaitlyn Dever has been cast to play Abby, a pivotal character in the second season of HBO's The Last of Us. However, nearly a decade before she was called up to join the hit TV series, Dever had almost been cast as Ellie in a film adaptation of the wildly popular video game series.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter – at the series' Season 2 premiere in LA – Dever explained just how close she was to playing Ellie in the planned The Last of Us film. “I didn’t even audition. It was only just like meetings I was having with [creator] Neil [Druckmann]. I was going to [Druckmann’s video game company] Naughty Dog and he was showing me how the game was created and definitely giving me spoilers for game 11 years before it came out; I had to carry a lot of weight, it’s been rough these last 10 years, I have to say,” she said.

The brand new trailer for season 2 of "The Last of Us" has shuffled its way online, promising a much cheerier, all-around nicer experience than the show's heartbreaking debut. Just kidding. We're absolutely on course for another incredible mix of terror and tear-jerking moments, this time with a brand-new character thrown into the mix.
Following the events of last season, which ended with Joel (Pedro Pascal) finding a new reason to live at the end of the world with Ellie (Bella Ramsay), season 2 shifts the focus to the girl he saved, who still has a secret that could save mankind. The battle for survival is still raging on, though, and besides infected and nightmarish Clickers at risk of sending what's left of humanity to extinction, a stranger with a harrowing past arrives in the form of the highly-controversial character Abby, played by "No One Will Save You" and "Apple Cider Vinegar" star Kaitlyn Dever.

No One Will Save You director Brian Duffield will direct Whalefall, a survival thriller where a man is stuck inside a whale. Yes, really.
Brian Duffield, the director of No One Will Save You and Spontaneous, has set his sights on a lead actor for his next project. Duffield is set to adapt Daniel Kraus’ novel Whalefall, and Austin Abrams, who was last seen alongside George Clooney and Brad Pitt in the thriller Wolfs, is set to star, as reported by Deadline.
What could a novel titled Whalefall be about, I hear you asking. According to Deadline, the original novel has been described as a mix of The Martian and 127 Hours, which have also been successfully adapted into excellent films. Kraus’ novel does include a similar beat-the-clock narrative, but a much wilder premise.
Whalefall follows scuba diving teenager Jay, who is looking for his father’s remains at the bottom of an ocean.

Here's an interesting premise for a survival film: getting swallowed by a whale and fighting to escape alive. That's what the upcoming movie Whalefall is about, based on the 2023 novel of the same name by Daniel Kraus, an author who has collaborated with Guillermo del Toro and George A. Romero.
Deadline reports that the lead role in Whalefall has gone to actor Austin Abrams. Abrams has previously starred in teen-centric projects like Do Revenge, Euphoria, Dash & Lily, and Paper Towns, but he's been branching out and becoming increasingly popular in recent years. In 2024, Abrams starred in Wolfs, an action comedy starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt. He will also star in the upcoming horror film Weapons from Barbarian director Zach Cregger. Abrams landed the part in Whalefall after an extensive auditioning process.
The outlet reports that Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You) will direct the film and co-write the script with Kraus.

Thar she blows! Spontaneous and No One Will Save You director Brian Duffield is dropping anchor on Whalefall, a unique undersea thriller with Wolfs actor Austin Abrams in the lead role. After scouring the depths of the audition pool for the right actor to dive into the tale, Abrams emerged as the top choice to topline the film based on the Daniel Krauss novel. The ambitious project lands with 20th Century, with Duffield co-writing the script alongside Krauss.
Deadline describes Whalefall as The Martian meets 127 Hours. The scientifically-accurate story focuses on a scuba diver searching for his deceased father’s remains, only to get swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale with only one hour to escape before oxygen runs out. While struggling to survive, the young diver discovers a new reason to live in the most unlikely place.
Here’s a synopsis for Krauss’s novel courtesy of Amazon:...

More than a decade has passed since Legendary Pictures secured the rights to Godzilla and other characters owned and created by the Japanese company Toho so they could launch a cinematic universe they call the MonsterVerse – and they also secured the rights to the King Kong character so he could be part of their MonsterVerse as well. Things got started with Godzilla in 2014, and since then the universe has expanded with Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Godzilla vs. Kong, the animated series Skull Island, the live-action series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A third Godzilla / Kong mash-up is now in the works – and Deadline has just revealed that Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket) is in the cast!
As Deadline notes, “the Stranger Things and Married to the Mob actors’ credits also include Christopher Nolan’s Academy Award-winner Oppenheimer, Hard Miles, Miss Virginia and The Martini Shot.

The very concept of aliens plays on our collective fear of the unknown; there’s no telling what horrors await in the cosmos. While there are plenty of horror movies that explore that horror by sending humans into space, alien invasion horror movies induce paranoia, tension, and fear by bringing extraterrestrials earthbound to invade in various unsettling ways.
It’s home invasion horror on a massive scale, with humanity often facing apocalyptic doom against the threat of intelligent life from beyond our galaxy.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to alien invasion horror movies that unsettle for the eerie, inhuman invaders and their even creepier means of assimilation.

While The Last of Usshow creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have already been open about how season two of the HBO drama will deviate from the source material, there is one very visible change that hasn't really been mentioned yet. Many fans of the ground-breaking games that inspired one of audiences' favorite HBO dramas starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey quickly picked up on a disparity from the game in the form of a new character, Abby. The important role is being played by No One Will Save You actress Kaitlyn Dever, and fans can't help but notice the difference in her smaller stature versus Abby's video game model's jacked figure.
However, Druckmann recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly as the show gears up for its season 2 release, clearing the air and hopefully dispelling some worries surrounding Dever's performance. As co-creator and writer of the games that started it all,...

The follow-up to last year’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire will be directed by franchise newcomer Grant Sputore (I Am Mother), but at least one familiar face will be part of the cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dan Stevens is in talks to reprise his role as the Kaiju expert named Trapper from Adam Wingard’s Godzilla x Kong.
Dan Stevens perfectly summed up his Monsterverse character last year: “[My character is] a specialist in these creatures… If you’ve got a sick titan, Trap is your guy.”
Kaitlyn Dever (No One Will Save You) is also in negotiations to come face-to-face with Godzilla and Kong in the next installment in Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise.

Shocking to no one, the first season of The Last of Us on HBO and Max was a hit. The video game it is based on was a masterpiece, but it was the story drew people in - and the series showcased that.
Joel and Ellie’s relationship was at the center of the story but that was only part of its greatness. The emotional moments made the commentary about what life is worth saving made it the talk of the year in the video game community. People still debate whether or not Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) should have saved Ellie (Bella Ramsey). If you think that story divided people, wait until you meet Abby.

We got confirmation late last year that a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was officially in the works, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and previous MonsterVerse movie Godzilla vs. Kong, was originally set to return, but ultimately departed the project under "amicable" circumstances, with Grant Sputore stepping in to replace him shortly after.
Now, Deadline reports that the next MonsterVerse movie has founds its lead in Kaitlyn Dever.
We don't have any details on who she'll play, but the trade mentions that, while Kong and Godzilla will still be fronting the film, Legendary is looking to build on its human characters. The story will focus on "Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat."

The next entry in the MonsterVerse continues the franchise tradition of getting talented actors who one wouldn't think of joining a big kaiju franchise where a giant gorilla punches a giant lizard. While the main draw of the MonsterVerse films has been Godzilla, Kong, and other titans, the franchise has also included an incredible lineup of talent, including Bryan Cranston, Brie Larson, and Samuel L. Jackson. For the upcoming follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, The Last of Us season 2 star Kaitlyn Dever is joining the franchise.

A decade ago, Legendary Pictures secured the rights to Godzilla and other characters owned and created by the Japanese company Toho so they could launch a cinematic universe they call the MonsterVerse – and they also secured the rights to the King Kong character so he could be part of their MonsterVerse as well. A third Godzilla / Kong mash-up is now in the works – and Deadline has learned that the iconic monsters are being joined in the cast by Kaitlyn Dever this time around.

Commenters under Netflix’s Apple Cider Vinegar trailer seem to think the teaser gives off real Inventing Anna vibes. Both shows focus on women who draw unsuspecting victims into their web of lies. In Apple Cider Vinegar, the liar at the series’ heart is an Australian influencer who lures followers in with claims she’s found a new way to battle cancer.
“Set at the birth of Instagram, Apple Cider Vinegar follows two young women who set out to cure their life-threatening illnesses through health and wellness, influencing their global online communities along the way. All of which would be incredibly inspiring if it were all true,” reads Netflix’s synopsis. “This is a true-ish story based on a lie, about the rise and fall of a wellness empire; the culture that built it up and the people who tore it down.”

Anyone who played The Last of Us on PlayStation knew that HBO would renew it. The story was too good for people not to tune in and the characters left fans emotional after every episode. But, let this writer tell the uninformed something. You haven’t seen anything yet. The second season of The Last of Us on HBO will feature one of the most controversial PlayStation characters of all time, Abby.

Early during the game, you learn that Joel is the man who killed her father (the surgeon who was going to operate on Ellie). That leads to some thought-provoking moments. As deep and introspective as they are, that’s not the first thing people think of when it comes to Abby. They think of her size.

Joel and Ellie’s quest for survival in The Last of Us Season 1 concluded with Joel killing countless people, flawlessly setting up countless plots for Season 2.
Thankfully, the wait is almost over. HBO has confirmed the adaptation of the Naughty Dog video game series will return at some point in April.
With The White Lotus Season 3 coming up in February, we’re inclined to believe it will premiere the week after that wraps.
(HBO/Screenshot)
Given how close we are to the premiere, you’d think HBO would just give the date away, but we’ll stay tuned for it.
“Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind,” the logline teases.

Over the past decade, Dylan O'Brien has quickly become one of the most in-demand young actors in Hollywood. Since his breakout role in The Maze Runner series in 2014, O'Brien has made a big impression in everything from real-life thrillers like Deepwater Horizon to big-budget franchise entries like Bumblebee, and recently took on the role of comedy legend Dan Aykroyd in Jason Reitman's Saturday Night Live origin story Saturday Night.
Despite his recent success, O'Brien's best reviewed movie so far landed with a thud in theaters. 2020's Love and Monsters was hailed by critics as a highly enjoyable sci-fi romp, and boasts a very impressive 94% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Plenty of critics singled out O'Brien's performance as a major part of the film's success and marking him as a star on the rise. Sadly, despite the critical applause, Love and Monsters was a box office flop, grossing only $1.1 million against its $30 million budget.

Throughout the 2010s, Brian Duffield more than did his part to keep the art of the original genre movie alive and thriving. Between his screenplays for the babysitter slasher-comedy "The Babysitter," the post-apocalyptic monster adventure "Love and Monsters," and the underwater survival thriller "Underwater", Duffield emerged as one of the hottest talents in Hollywood before fully coming into his own as the writer-director behind the well-received high school horror rom-com "Spontaneous" and essentially dialogue-free alien invasion thriller "No One Will Save You" in the 2020s. But before any of that happened, the first produced film based on one of Duffield's unique scrips became something of a disaster.
The movie in question, "Jane Got a Gun," has the makings of an inventive spin on a familiar tune, much like Duffield's other work. Directed by Gavin O'Connor, the Western casts Natalie Portman as the eponymous firearm-wielding cowlady, a woman whose husband is...

HBO has dropped the first trailer for "The Last of Us" season 2, and fans of the show are naturally hyped -- but there's some tension in the air as well. "The Last of Us Part II," the video game upon which this season is based, was hotly anticipated in the lead-up to its release in 2020. Yet even fans who'd embraced the harsh post-apocalyptic world of the first game were left devastated by the events of the second.
For the most part, the sequel was highly praised by critics and gamers alike despite their heartbreak. "It's incredible, and I never want to play it again" was a common sentiment, and /Film's own review describes it as a "miserable masterpiece." But a significant percentage of players truly loathed the game's story choices, and some of those fans took the backlash way too far.

The second season of HBO's hit series "The Last of Us" — based on the beloved video game of the same name created by Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog — won't start airing until 2025, but fans finally got a longer look at the sophomore outing.
Before this trailer, audiences only got a tiny glimpse of season 2 of "The Last of Us" in a sizzle reel for Max that arrived back in August and showed off footage from other 2025 shows, including season 3 of "The White Lotus" and the new "Game of Thrones" spinoff "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." That little tease prominently featured Catherine O'Hara's new character — and we don't know what her deal is quite yet — and based on the brief dialogue between her character and Joel (Pedro Pascal), fans concluded that the story will pick up shortly after the events of the season 1 finale of "The Last of Us.

The “Holdovers” breakout Dominic Sessa is in talks to play the late Anthony Bourdain in A24’s upcoming biopic, “Tony,” according to media reports.
