Since its surprising theatrical run, The Substance has established itself as an instant classic. It showcased incredible horror scenes and brilliant makeup effects and opened the door for other body horror films in the years ahead. Movies like Together have been picked up by major studios after The Substance‘s success, and there will undeniably be more body horror flicks in production because of Fargeat’s masterpiece. While we wait for those movies, let’s check out some of the great horror, comedy, and drama films that both inspired The Substance and will appeal to fans of the movie.
1. American Mary (2012) Directed by Jen Soska & Sylvia Soska
While The Substance is a little heavy on its themes around plastic surgery to maintain youth, American Mary never hesitates to make this part of the text. The indie horror film might not feature great performances, but it does nail a campy, hedonistic...

David Cronenberg, the Canadian body-horror master behind works like Crimes of the Future, Videodrome and Scanners, has shared his opinion about something he doesn't usually address: The Oscars. The director talked about the controversy that Brady Corbet's historical drama The Brutalistfaced before the Academy Awards this year when the film's editor admitted to using AI to make Adrien Brody's Hungarian accent more authentic. Cronenberg attributes the backlash to other Oscar nominees who campaigned against the film: "It's very much a Harvey Weinstein kind of thing."
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Cronenberg was at the London Soundtrack Festival, where he participated in a talk with his frequent collaborator Howard Shore. The composer has worked with Cronenberg on films like Crash, Naked Lunch and Eastern Promises, and he also composed the music for The Shrouds, the director's latest film, which is set to be released in 2025. After his long-awaited return with Crimes of the Future, David Cronenberg quickly followed it up with The Shrouds, a darkly funny conspiracy thriller led by Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, and newly minted Oscar nominee Guy Pearce. Sideshow and Janus Films have unveiled the new trailer for the Cannes, TIFF, and NYFF selection ahead of an NY and LA opening on April 18 followed by a nationwide release on April 25.
Here’s the synopsis: “In an eerie, deceptively placid near-future, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Vincent Cassel) has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth. While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Diane Kruger) from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger)—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his ‘shroud’ technology begins to put his enterprise at risk,...

Denis Villeneuve recently revealed that he does not intend on helming a different film first, and his adaptation of Dune: Messiah (though the movie will likely end up being titled Dune: Part 3) will be his next project. Production is expected to get underway later this year, and we now have word on the return of a certain character from the first movie.
Though this won't come as a surprise to anyone who has read Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi saga, here's your Spoiler warning just in case.
Jason Momoa's Duncan Idaho was killed off towards the end of Dune: Part One, but Jeff Sneider has now confirmed that the Aquaman star will reprise the role for the third film.
How does Duncan return after what looked like such a definitive death? Well, in the Dune universe, an artificial copy (not exactly a clone) of a deceased person known as...

Jurassic World Rebirth Director Gareth Edwards Rumored To Be On WB's Radar To Helm Fourth Dune Movie
Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he has no intention of helming any more movies in the franchise after his planned Dune: Messiah adaptation, but that doesn't mean Warner Bros. will stop after three!
According to scooper Daniel Richtman, the studio is planning to move forward with at least one more Dune movie, and they might be looking at Gareth Edwards to take the helm.
The scooper believes that there's interest in Edwards - who also has Jurassic World Rebirth coming out later this year - stepping in to direct, but isn't sure if he's actually in talks.
The first two movies were big successes, but a fourth chapter would still be somewhat surprising given the direction Frank Herbert's saga goes in after the second book. Villeneuve has shown little interest in adapting the later novels, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune,...

Crimes of the Future: Mascaro Envisions Trouble Ahead
“Getting old ain’t no place for sissies,” a quote often attributed to Bette Davis (or similar variations of the sentiment) easily applies to The Blue Trail, Brazilian director Gabriel Mascaro’s fourth feature which depicts a near-future world where the elderly are conscripted against their will to an isolated concentration camp so the country’s youth can more easily focus on working. While darkly comedic in tone, it’s also a life changing odyssey for its central protagonist, a spry seventy-seven-year-old woman who is unwilling to obey these newly imposed orders. Pleasurably mordant in its critique of governmental propaganda disguising violence and inhumanity, Mascaro showcases lead Daniela Weinberg as a witty, resourceful woman who is far from ready to walk gentle into that good night.…...

One of the least-expected, most welcome, and coolest surprises on Star Trek: Discovery was the ongoing, recurring presence of David Cronenberg as the mysterious character, Dr. Kovich, who first popped up in season three of the show. Cronenberg has acted on occasion over the years but is far, far better known as the director of such features as The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, The Dead Zone, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Crash, Eastern Promises, Cosmopolis, and Crimes of the Future. And now he’s back in the director’s chair for The Shrouds, which, nearly a year after premiering at the Cannes Film Festival, will open in the United States on April 25.
Sideshow and Janus Films, which will release the film, just dropped a brief synopsis and a short teaser trailer. The synopsis reads, “Karsh (Vincent Cassel) is a prominent businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents GraveTech, a...

David Cronenberg has made a successful career out of helming some of the most visceral and visually disturbing body horrors in cinema. It started back in the 1970s with movies like The Shivers and has continued over the last 50-plus years with notable entries including Scanners in 1981, 1986's The Fly, and most recently, in 2022, with Crimes of the Future. The prolific filmmaker has dabbled in other genres like psychological thrillers and dramas, but he is most notable because of his avant-garde approach to conceptual and experimental horror. He has even made a few cameos in several of his films, appearing in small and largely unnoticed roles. But there have been two occasions in which Cronenberg was tabbed for featured, leading roles, and one of those was when he worked with another horror legend, Clive Barker, in the 1990 surreal cult film Nightbreed. While he isn't known for his acting abilities, Cronenberg...

Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has stated that he has no intention of helming any more movies in the franchise after his planned Dune: Messiah adaptation, but that doesn't mean Warner Bros. will stop making them!
According to scooper Daniel Richtman (and backed up by a report from World of Reel), the studio is planning to move forward with at least one more Dune movie and a second TV series.
HBO's Dune: Prophecy was not as acclaimed as the films, but it reportedly did pretty well from a viewership standpoint.
The first two movies were big successes, but a fourth chapter would still be somewhat surprising given the direction Frank Herbert's saga goes in after the second book. Villeneuve has shown little interest in adapting the later novels, Children of Dune and God Emperor of Dune, as he feels the story starts to become too "esoteric.

Native American actors have been getting their much-deserved dues in recent years in Hollywood, with younger and older Indigenous actors benefiting from more opportunities. Native Americans, Indigenous peoples, and First Nations peoples are all names for the peoples who can trace their origins to the original tribes, confederations, and communities that called America home long before any Europeans came ashore. Persecuted from the outset, even modern Hollywood is not free from the sin of disrespecting and disenfranchising Native American actors. There’s a long, sad history of Hollywood whitewashing Indigenous roles, that is when they’re even included at all.
But the story has been changing in the 21st century. Native American movies and TV shows are telling real stories of Indigenous peoples, made by and starring those closest to them. With shows like Reservation Dogs and Dark Winds, and movies like Rez Ball proving popular with critics and audiences alike,...

One of those picks kicks off this column, and it is written by none other than the great Al Pacino.
Sonny Boy by Al Pacino (Penguin Press)
Al Pacino’s memoir, Sonny Boy, is easily one of the most eagerly awaited books of 2024. And for me, this look at the actor’s life and career more than lives up to the hype. Many highlights have already earned some social-media chatter––most notably young Al’s penis trauma (!), a near-death experience after a recent bout with Covid, and the reasons behind his decision to do Adam Sandler’s Jack and Jill.

Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve recently shared a positive update on Warner Bros.' plans for a third movie, confirming that the script for an adaptation of Dune: Messiah is officially in the works.
Villeneuve also confirmed (though it really didn't come as much of a surprise) that Anya Taylor-Joy will return as Alia Atreides following her brief cameo in the last movie.
In Part One, we learn that Paul Atreides' mother, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, is pregnant with the late Duke Leto's child. When the Fremen take in the survivors of the Harkonnen massacre, Jessica agrees to become the tribe's new Reverend Mother (she isn't really given a choice) and is "persuaded" to drink the Water of Life (a blue substance that's been extracted from a juvenile sandworm).
This gives Jessica incredible foresight and knowledge of previous generations, while also awakening similar abilities in her unborn daughter,...

Dune and Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve has often mentioned that he is (or was) a huge Star Wars fan, and has even suggested that George Lucas' original trilogy was an early influence on his decision to pursue a career as a filmmaker.
Despite his love for the franchise, Villeneuve has now explained why he has no interest in directing a movie set in the galaxy far, far away.
While chatting to The Town Podcast, Villeneuve said directing a Star Wars movie simply isn't "a dream of his" because "Star Wars became crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic, it seemed like a recipe, no more surprises."
He also feels that Return of the Jedi derailed the franchise back in 1983.
“I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It went to my brain like a silver bullet. I became obsessed with Star Wars. I mean, The Empire Strikes Back...

Despite the first Dune movie picking up a nomination for Best Picture at the 2022 Academy Awards, Denis Villeneuve was not nominated for Best Director. Understandably, this didn't sit very well with a lot of people - including star Josh Brolin.
Brolin, who played loyal Atreides War Master Gurney Halleck in both movies, was very vocal about Villeneuve being overlooked the first time, and is even more adamant that the filmmaker should be recognized by the Academy for his work on recent sequel, Dune: Part Two.
“If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting,” Brolin tells Variety. “It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers. If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him.”
We're sure Brolin won't actually retire if Villeneuve isn't nominated,...

Many characters have come and gone from "Yellowstone." The series announced itself as a show unafraid to write off even key characters by immediately killing off Lee Dutton, son of Kevin Costner's John Dutton III, who met his fate at the end of the pilot episode of "Yellowstone." Other characters have faded in and out of the series as it has gone on. Taylor Sheridan cast himself as horse trainer Travis Wheatley, who initially showed up in season 1 for an episode, then a handful of episodes in season 2, before being absent altogether from season 3. The character then cropped up in a recurring capacity in season 4, but was once again missing from season 5A.
Similarly, Canadian actress Tanaya Beatty played the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch horse groomer Avery in season 1. When she's first introduced, Avery is recruited by Cole Hauser's Rip Wheeler from a strip club and has to justify...

Here's some *ahem* buzzy horror movie news for your Tuesday morning. David Cronenberg's seminal 1986 body horror masterpiece The Fly is set to be the basis for a seemingly Nia DaCosta's Candyman style, universe expanding spin-off at 20th Century Studios. Per Deadline's reporting, Nanny filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu is actively developing, well, The Fly, on which the in-demand rising name in horror will serve as both writer and director.
As Deadline are quick to note, whilst plot details for Jusu's films are being kept shtum at the moment, "sources stressed that it’s set in the universe of Cronenberg’s film, rather than a straightforward remake." Yes, it seems we're heading Into The Brundleverse! Now, how exactly Jusu's movie will tie in to Cronenberg's cult classic remains to be seen, but there's no shortage of possible routes to go down — especially in this modern age of increasingly radical, head spinning scientific experimentation.

Scott Speedman is a husband whose dark secrets are bubbling to the surface in Cellar Door. Speedman saw an early skyrocket in his career with back-to-back major roles in Nancy Drew, Felicity and the Underworld movies. In the years since, Speedman has found further success on both the big and small screens with everything from Bryan Bertino's The Strangers to the ABC thriller Last Resort, David Cronenberg's body horror Crimes of the Future and Grey's Anatomy, among many others.
In Cellar Door, Speedman stars as John, a real estate agent looking for a new home with his wife Sera after she suffers a miscarriage and wants to move away from where it happened. After being offered the chance of a lifetime to own a sprawling mansion on the agreement to never open its cellar door, John and Sera begin to find themselves conflicting over the deal. Dawson is joined by U.K. actors Arthur McBain, Ralf Little (“The Royle Family,” “Death in Paradise”) and Danny John-Jules. Veteran Greek theater director Angela Brouskou also joins the cast in a lead role.
Set in a dystopian world dominated by the Regime, “The Flaw” follows a ruthless Interrogator (Dawson) who is ordered by the Special Service to follow a perfect Plan to prove a Suspect (McBain) is guilty. But once the interrogation gets underway, he comes to realize that there is a flaw not only in the Plan, but also in the Regime itself.

Beta Film has released a swashbuckling, pulse-pounding trailer for “Rise of the Raven,” its epic 10-part drama series based on the bloody 15th-century battle that changed the course of Europe. The show will world premiere at Mipcom in the Grand Auditorium of Cannes’ Palais des Festivals on Oct. 22.
Adapted from author Bán Mór’s bestselling novels, the series tells the story of the Hungarian warrior Janos Hunyadi, who defeated the Ottoman army in 1456 at the Battle of Belgrade, halting its march across Europe and marking a turning point in the history of the continent.

[This story contains spoilers from the first two episodes of Teacup.]
Scott Speedman may have endeared himself to audiences in the late ’90s as heartthrob Ben Covington, the object of Felicity Porter’s (Keri Russell) desires, on the WB college drama series Felicity. But for over two decades, the British-born Canadian actor has carved out a niche for himself in the horror and thriller genres, playing increasingly complicated and tortured men in the Underworld film franchise, The Strangers, David Cronenberg’s Crimes of the Future and the forthcoming Cellar Door. And in recent years, Speedman, with his buzzy roles in Grey’s Anatomy and You, has reentered the cultural zeitgeist.
Now, Teacup marks Speedman’s latest foray into horror. Adapted from Robert R. McCammon’s novel Stinger by Ian McCulloch (Yellowstone, Chicago Fire) and executive produced by James Wan, the eerie eight-part series, which premiered with its first two episodes Thursday on Peacock, follows a disparate group of people in...

Much of the press about The Shrouds since its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year has focused on the deeply personal inspiration for the film: David Cronenberg’s grief over the death of his wife in 2017. For those who are aware of this context going in, one could see signs of that extra investment on the writer-director’s part here and there, especially in the way one of the film’s stars, Vincent Cassel, is made up to look like Cronenberg himself. Lest that suggests something more overtly emotional than what one might expect from the Canadian auteur, though, The Shrouds dispels that notion very early on.
The film’s opening credits sequence features a bunch of swirling dots that eventually form into the outline of a woman. Allied with the insinuating low-pitched electronic droning of Howard Shore’s score, the sequence dissolves into a dreamy...

Back in February of 2023, it was announced that Jordana Brewster, Scott Speedman, Laurence Fishburne, and Addison Timlin had signed on to star in the latest thriller from Terminal and Inheritance director Vaughn Stein, a project that was known as The Offer at that time. With that date just five weeks away, a trailer for the film has arrived online and can be seen in the embed above.

Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve recently shared a positive update on Warner Bros.' plans for a third movie, confirming that the script for an adaptation of Dune: Messiah is officially in the works.
Though the filmmaker hasn't full committed to helming the project, we'd be very surprised if he didn't return to finish his take on this saga - although, if and when he does, he won't actually consider it a trilogy.
“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve says of the first two movies during an interview with Vanity Fair. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there,...

Audiences hungry for David Cronenberg’s infamous brand of body horror may have hoped that 2022’s Crimes of the Future marked his return to the genre. That film, which formed an unofficial trilogy that began with 1983’s Videodrome and continued in 1999’s eXistenZ, featured several callbacks to the Canadian director’s recurring visual and thematic interests.
The Shrouds, Cronenberg’s latest, is even less of a genre film than Crimes of the Future, though it does share its predecessor’s same dark sense of humour, as well as the director’s tendency to revisit or reconsider his previous work.
The film is ostensibly set in 2023, four years after the death of Karsh (Vincent Cassel)’s wife, Becca (Diane Kruger). Becca died of bone cancer and Karsh has yet to recover, as the opening scene of him crying during a visit to the dentist proves.

Although Dune: Part Two didn't reach $1 billion at the global box office as some had predicted (always a long shot in the current climate), it did pass $700 million worldwide, meaning a third film based on Frank Herbert's second novel, Dune: Messiah, always seemed likely.
Part Three still hasn't been officially greenllt by the studio, but director Denis Villeneuve has now shared a very positive update on Warner Bros.' plans for the final chapter.
While speaking to Variety at TIFF, the filmmaker confirmed that the script for Dune: Part Three is officially "in the works."

This is obviously a strong indication that Villeneuve intends to return to complete the trilogy, but he hasn't always sounded too certain about it.

From returning franchises such as Saw and I Know What You Did Last Summer to anticipated adaptations like The Monkey, next year will surely rival this year in terms of the horror genre. And one release we just got an exciting update on is Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard's feature-length directorial debut, Hell of a Summer. Wolfhard co-wrote and co-directed the film with Billy Bryk.
Though Hell of a Summer was filmed in 2022 and made its premiere at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, it had yet to score a distributor until now. As reported by Deadline today, hot studio Neon has acquired the U.S. rights to the movie, which is a horror-comedy. The production and distribution company shared the news on social media, posting a still from Hell of a Summer...

David Cronenberg's influence has shaped the modern horror landscape, blending metaphysical and physical elements for provocative storytelling. Cronenberg's impact on body horror is evident in films like American Mary, Slither, and Kuso, pushing boundaries with grotesque transformations. Newer films like Censor and Possessor continue Cronenberg's legacy, exploring themes of anatomy, self-transformation, and the blurred lines between reality and fiction.
The modern horror landscape wouldnt look the same without the influence of body horror maestro David Cronenberg. Since his debut, Shivers, a sticky satire about an apartment complex infected with an erotic virus clearly meant to critique the sexual revolution, his work has provoked by combining metaphysical with the very-physical on screen, plumbing the depths of the human animals urges by testing its boundaries, usually proving them much too porous for comfort, from The Fly to The Brood, to Videodrome.
The once-polarizing Cronenberg has become an elder statesman in horror over the years.

Guillermo del Toro’s boundless imagination, from the gothic horrors of “Crimson Peak” to the creature-feature-inspired “The Shape of Water,” has been cultivated by a lifelong love of cinema. The Mexican filmmaker proudly wears his influences on his sleeves, while championing the past and future of moviegoing and movie-making. Just take his latest projects.
There’s the stunning, stop-motion “Pinocchio” reimagining, which is leagues better than Disney’s straight-to-streaming competitor — far too slick for its own good (no matter how much Tom Hanks tried). And, also at Netflix, there’s the “Cabinet of Curiosities“: an eight-part horror anthology that unfortunately does not include any directing from del Toro, but does feature his writing, producing, and a Rod Serling-like “Twilight Zone” style intro for each episode.
Before that, the 2021 show business noir “Nightmare Alley” saw del Toro loosely remake a 1947 classic, but he also imbued plenty of his own...

1997 was far more than merely a popular setting for sci-fi films, feeding into Y2K tech paranoia and dystopian themes. Films like Escape from New York, Predator 2, and Terminator 2 showcased unique visions of the worst ways for America to crumble. James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day established what is perhaps the most significant date in sci-fi lore, marking the day the evil computer network Skynet gained self-awareness and instigated a war against humanity.
For all the talk about the mind-blowing science-fiction released in 1997, Starship Troopers and Gattaca to name a few, we forget that the year was always special in movies. No, not in the way you'd think, not the real-life chronology, but in regard to the narratives taking place in the made-up year of 1997. For a lot of sci-fi authors, they never thought we'd escape the year, let alone the 20th century. As far as the fictional protagonists go,...
