British Oscar Winner Reveals Why He Hid In The Bathroom Prior To Receiving Academy Award
Image
Charlie Mackesy won even more hearts with his Instagram message on a napkin to his 1.8million followers from the Oscars – more specifically, from inside the toilet where he was hiding prior to his category being announced.

Now the winner of the award for best animated short film – for his heartwarming tale The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse – has told the crowd at Latitude Festival that he was too petrified by the cameras and crowds of people to stay in the auditorium in the minutes leading up to the announcement.

The BBC reports Mackesy telling the audience:

“I didn’t think I could even go on stage. I was quite daunted by it.”

And Mackesy added of receiving his Oscar:

“Sometimes I don’t even like to look at the statue, I’ve just got it at home wrapped in a t-shirt. It hasn’t sunk in and...

Critic’s Notebook: The 95th Academy Awards Were Mercifully Low on Drama, Movingly High on Emotion
Image
As the credits began to roll at the end of the 2023 Oscars, host Jimmy Kimmel walked to the side of the stage, where somebody had placed an industrial workplace sign reading “Number of Oscars Telecasts Without an Incident,” and he triumphantly flipped the “00” to “01.”

That pretty much sums up the night.

Maybe you’re a person who loves chaos, in which case the Oscars telecast was doubtlessly a large disappointment. Maybe you’re a person who hates Everything Everywhere All at Once, in which case the Oscars telecast was doubtlessly infuriating. Maybe you hate Hollywood folks and think it’s inappropriate for the recipient of a professional honor to get emotional, in which case the Oscars telecast gave you plenty to be snide about.

I’m going to complain about things in the Oscars telecast. It’s what I do, and the telecast was hardly without flaws. But those flaws...

‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ dominates Oscars with seven wins including best picture
Image
The 2023 show went off without controversy, although as usual overshot its planned three-hour running time by more than 30 minutes.

Everything Everywhere All At Once capped its triumphant awards season with seven Oscars – including best picture, best directors and three acting prizes - at the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday night (March 12).

Apparently reflecting the taste of a younger, more international Academy voting body, the multiverse comedy became the first film to win seven Oscars since Gravity in 2013; and first best picture winner to take more than four awards since The Artist’s five in 2012.

Austrian Co-Productions on a Winning Streak
Image
After a hugely successful year for domestic films, Austria’s movie industry is looking forward to another impressive crop of titles, including many international co-productions that reflect not only cultural and historical ties with neighboring countries but also the sector’s strong cross-border partnerships.

Highly anticipated films this year include Hans Steinbichler’s “A Whole Life,” the story of a humble man’s existence in an Alpine valley that spans more than eight decades; Dieter Berner’s “Alma and Oskar,” which explores the passionate and tumultuous affair between Viennese composer and socialite Alma Mahler and artist Oskar Kokoschka in the early 1900s; and Timm Kröger’s “The Theory of Everything,” a black-and-white, 1960s-set mystery-thriller that takes place in a scientific conference in the Alps.

Forthcoming releases include works from established directors and young filmmakers, says Anne Laurent-Delage, executive director of promotional organization Austrian Films. This year’s strong showing follows...

Oscars 2023: The Best Animated Shorts Nominees, Ranked
Image
Outside of the occasional festival screening, Oscar season is often the only time many filmgoers engage with short film, so the nominees better make it count. An Oscar nomination means greater visibility for any film, but its impact is often exponential on short film. Now in its 18th year, ShortsTV offers audiences the chance to immerse themselves in the world of shorts, by giving all of the nominees a theatrical release. If viewers are willing to forego movie stars and step outside their comfort zones, they are in for a real treat.

The animated shorts may have leaned towards kids’ fare in the past, but the category has taken a turn in recent years. This year, only one short, Apple Original Films’ “The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse” seems geared towards younger audiences. The rest skew far more mature, like “My Year of Dicks,” a hilarious trip...

Oscars 2023: Streamers Beat A Retreat, Netting Half Of Last Year’s Nomination Tally

The Fox
Image
With The Fox, the king of Seventies mass-market pop-rock has finally found a comfortable balance between the churchy turgidity of "serious" efforts like Blue Moves and the irresistible thrust of his finest singles. For a change, there's no glaringly obvious filler, and Elton John's lusty pop gospel singing eschews the earlier extremes of oratorical histrionics and rock & roll brattiness. Tune for tune, these eleven songs make up John's most consistently listenable collection in years.

John also seems determined to regain the grip on the pop mainstream he lost after Rock of the Westies.
