Exclusive: British-Iranian screenwriter Juliette Towhidi is attached to pen the untitled feature film project about Farah Pahlavi, Empress of Iran, wife of the late Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

As Deadline announced last summer, a newly formed collaboration with Women of the Movement producers Serendipity Group and John Powers Middleton, an official documentary and film project, was in the works. The doc began production in Washington, D.C., and continued through the end of 2024. Work is set to resume this month. Emily Atef is set as the film’s director.

The film will explore the life of Shahbanou Farah Pahlavi, focusing on the resilience of a woman who, despite an exile lasting more than 45 years and mourning the loss of her husband and two children, remains deeply devoted to her duty as a sovereign and attached to her homeland. She never remarried or gave up her Iranian identity.

When his 10-year-old daughter Willow starts to question why her family lives such a reclusive life in the forest, she starts digging into their history and uncovers a dark ancestral secret. Voltage Pictures is kicking off sales in Cannes this week on the child kidnapping thriller Stolen Girl starring Kate Beckinsale and Scott Eastwood.

Italy’s Ilbe is lead-producing and Voltage is executive producer on the €25m ($26m) feature, which started principal photography on Monday (May 13) in Puglia in Italy.

Stolen Girl follows Maureen Danning (Beckinsale), who partners with Robeson (Eastwood), a former Marine and child abduction specialist, after her ex-husband abducts their young daughter and flees to the Middle East.

Maureen and Robeson embark on a mission to Beirut and navigate a maze of betrayal, corruption, and espionage to bring the girl home.

A new report from Variety revealed that Kate Beckinsale, Scott Eastwood, and James Cromwell have all joined the cast of Stolen Girl, an upcoming kidnapping drama directed by Kent. Amazon Prime Video has ordered a psychological mystery thriller limited series from Harlan Coben and Danny Brocklehurst, Variety has learned exclusively.

The series is based on an original story idea by Coben and Brocklehurst, with Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy, and Alexandra Roach attached to star.

Currently titled “Lazarus,” the series is said to follow “a man who returns home after his father’s suicide and begins to have disturbing experiences that can’t be explained. He quickly becomes entangled in a series of cold-case murders as he grapples with the mystery of his father’s death and his sister’s murder 25 years ago.”

Coben and Brocklehurst will serve as writers and executive producers. Nicola Shindler and Richard Fee will executive produce via Quay Street Productions, part of ITV Studios. Claflin will executive produce in addition to starring. Wayne Che Yip will executive produce and direct the first two episodes. Matt Strevens will produce.

Mark Shelmerdine, the veteran producer who revived London Films as an indie powerhouse and played a pivotal role in the development of the international TV distribution market, died October 26 in Santa Barbara surrounded by his family. He was 78.

Among his achievements, he was among the first UK indie TV producers to retain rights to a broadcast production and was a founder of the LA branch of BAFTA.

Shelmerdine’s death was confirmed to Deadline by his friend Brian Eastman. The producer had survived a rare and potentially deadly form of bile duct cancer by receiving a life-saving liver transplant in 2018 through a trial in Houston, and was one of the longest living survivors of the MD Anderson Cancer Center and Houston Methodist Hospital program.

Ooo, so what’s this “new era” coming for the denizens of Downton Abbey, 1920s-Yorkshire’s nicest feudal hangover? Alicia Vikander (Blue Bayou) is replacing Michelle Williams as Queen Catherine Parr in the royal thriller Firebrand from Brazilian helmer Karim Ainouz (The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão), Deadline has confirmed. She’ll star alongside Jude Law, who is set to portray King Henry VIII.

ViacomCBS International Studios is developing a TV series depicting the life of groundbreaking Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga with British director James Kent (“Testament of Youth”) on board to direct and Spain’s Frida Torresblanco to serve as executive producer.

Balenciaga was born in 1895 in Getaria, a fishing village in northern Spain, and moved to Paris in 1937 where he made his mark as an innovative master of haute couture revered by colleagues and contemporaries such as Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy and Coco Chanel.

During the 1950s and 1960s, Balenciaga reached the height of his career by unveiling previously unseen styles, fabrics and shapes, such as the tunic, the “baby doll” and shift dresses. Unlike many other designers, Balenciaga was very private and elusive, having given only two newspaper interviews during his 50-year career. On the day of his death, in 1972, Women’s Wear Daily ran the headline “The king is dead.

Written by Rebecca Pollock and Kas Graham, the project — which is slated to shoot in 2021 — will depict the life of Balenciaga, who helped lead a revolution in fashion, with his precision and perfectionism earning him the admiration of contemporaries, including Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, and Coco Chanel.

In 1917, at the age of 22, he established his first fashion house in San Sebastian, and later opened fashion houses in Madrid and Barcelona, before moving to Paris in 1937, where his work won the admiration of an influential cosmopolitan clientele. In the 1950s, Balenciaga unveiled never-before-seen styles and shapes, which were considered radical designs at the time.

Nicola Pearcey, longtime president of Lionsgate UK and Europe, is leaving the company after 14 years to “pursue new opportunities”.

A replacement has yet to be announced for Pearcey, who will step down from her role at the end of 2020. The moves comes less than four months since Lionsgate revealed Zygi Kamasa was to exit his role as CEO of Lionsgate UK and Europe after 15 years, with Pearcey taking on his duties.

The brace of high-profile departures indicate Lionsgate may be moving away from the UK production space to instead focus on handling major releases for its parent company.

Exclusive: The UK Jewish Film Festival (Nov 6-23) has assembled a strong jury lineup for its 23rd edition including BAFTA chairwoman Jane Lush, Bridget Jones’s Baby scribe Dan Mazer, former Storyville boss Nick Fraser and Three Identical Strangers director Tim Wardle. Harington sought professional treatment “to work on some personal issues,” the actor’s publicist said in a statement. Page Six first broke the news, reporting that Harington checked into a Connecticut health retreat for treatment regarding stress and alcohol. Harington has reportedly spent the last month at the wellness center.

When I saw The Aftermath, the latest from Testament of Youth director James Kent, starring Kiera Knightley, Jason Clarke and Alexander Skarsgård, last weekend, I was seated next to an older man with a notepad who I assumed was a journalist. I chatted briefly with him before the film started, and when the lights went up and the credits began to roll, I asked him what he thought. His response: “I interviewed her [Knightley] when she did Atonement with James McAvoy. She was so good in that.”

That's a pretty fair takeaway from The Aftermath, which casts Knightley as Rachel, a bereaved military wife recently arrived in Hamburg in 1946 to join her estranged husband, Lewis (Jason Clarke), an officer in the British Army tasked with overseeing the rebuilding of the war-torn city and ferreting out any remaining Nazi-sympathizers...

It doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Those problems added up to immortal romance cinema for Bogie and Bergman in Casablanca. Things are not so lucky for the love triangle at the core of The Aftermath, a stuffy, soggy slog of a movie that fails to generate sparks or a lick of dramatic sense.
