Ukraine’s Kateryna Vyshnevska is set to receive the very first Honorary TV Beats Producer Award at Tallinn. But she’s not planning to slow down anytime soon, teasing upcoming shows “Moloch” and “A Girl from Tallinn.”
Set in the contemporary world of high politics and secret service intrigue in Central Europe, “Moloch” is produced by Bionaut (Czech Republic), Raketa (Slovakia) and Ukraine’s Film.UA. A political thriller “inspired by the realpolitik of today,” it opens with an attempted assassination of Czech president, echoing recent attacks on Trump and Slovak Pm Robert Fico, she says.
“It’s an alternative universe, similar to that of ‘Tehran’ on Apple TV+. Moloch was this ancient, all-devouring god and it’s a metaphor for politics, which grinds through everything, requiring victims and sacrifices. We filmed in Ukraine, which was amazing. Putin is crazy, so you never know if he won’t be suddenly dropping missiles on Kyiv.

During their search, they become embroiled in a dangerous game of secret services, international politics and forces determined to keep the truth hidden for various reasons.
Miroslav Donutil, a prominent Czech film and theatre actor, will star as the President of the Czech Republic, and Jan Révai, a frequently cast Czech actor, will play the role of investigative journalist. Polish actress Eliza Rycembel, known for her role in the Oscar-nominated film Corpus Christi, will play the online investigator Julia.
Screenwriter Štefan Titka, who co-created the miniseries concept with Vratislav Šlajer and Lukáš Hanulák, said the story has “topicality...

“Face Off” helmer John Woo will receive a Career Achievement Award during Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, about to celebrate its 26th edition. The Hong Kong filmmaker is currently working on “Silent Night,” starring Joel Kinnaman and Kid Cudi.
“I defy anyone to watch ‘Bullet in the Head,’ ‘Hard Boiled’ or ‘The Killer’ and not walk away wanting to break down the shots and make a movie. His use of camera movement, close-ups, the ways he would block and choreograph, it’s astonishing to look at,” Fantasia’s artistic director Mitch Davis told Variety, noting the “unexpected poetry” of Woo’s work.
“They are such unconventionally soulful films. I wish we could somehow unleash a flock of doves in the cinema when he steps onto the stage. Backlit.”
The festival, which will unspool July 14 – Aug. 3, has also unveiled its first wave of titles, starting with a selection of world...
