Top Chef has been taking the culinary and cooking show genre by storm with talented chefs showcasing their flavors and techniques. Every year thousands try out their luck, but only a few get this golden opportunity to win the coveted title.
Those who do get through try their hardest to stand out from the crowd, but some take this to a whole new level, that too in a negative light. For Season 10 of Top Chef, this was John Tesar.

While his cooking talents were undeniable, his brash attitude was at times downright insufferable. But when he returned for Top Chef: Charleston, which was the 14th season of the show, he came as a changed man. But there was another contestant who was the real villain in his story.

Television history is littered with failed sitcoms headlined by comedians that audiences seem to love — in the right show. Turn up in a stinker, however, and the shows are gone in a blink. Matthew Perry was great in Friends, but no one wanted Mr. Sunshine. Audiences adored McLean Stevenson in M*A*S*H but said goodbye to Hello Larry. Jon Cryer scored with Two and Half Men but was booted from his Extended Family this year.
Here are four more comedy stars who flopped multiple times while trying to get sitcoms off the ground…
1 Jason Bateman
Bateman received two well-deserved Emmy nominations for his performance as Michael Bluth in Arrested Development, recognition that came decades after his breakthrough as a Tiger Beat cover boy in Silver Spoons and The Hogan Family. In between, however, he starred in several sitcom flops that lasted a year or less, including It’s Your Move...

Last Week’S Podcast: Chelsea Handler Returns In Time to Take on Trump: ‘He’s Unfit to Do Anything’ — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
Jenna Elfman thought she was done with network TV.
“Dharma and Greg” put her on the map in the late 1990s, but after that hit, the actress suffered through a series of disappointments, including “Courting Alex,” “Accidentally on Purpose,” “1600 Penn,” and “Growing Up Fisher.”
“I had written off network TV,” Elfman said. “I told my agents not to come to me with another network show. I work really hard and I do my best to promote the shows. I feel like mostly I do a good job. In any other field that would give you job security. Sometimes it’s like it doesn’t matter.”
But there was something she couldn’t resist about “Imaginary Mary,” her new ABC series from “The Goldbergs” executive producer Adam F. Goldberg.

"Catastrophe" is a delightful study in contradictions. It's a high-concept comedy with low-key execution, and it's at once filthy on a level that's impressive even in the year 2015, yet almost shockingly normal despite that. The series — its six-episode first season aired on Channel 4 on the UK earlier this year, and is now streaming on Amazon Prime — casts its stars and creators, Rob Delaney and Sharon Horgan, as an American businessman and an Irish schoolteacher who have a fling while he's on a week-long trip to the UK. They get on well enough to at least discuss seeing each other again the next time he's in town, but then Sharon discovers that she's pregnant and Rob decides to set his whole life aside to move in with her and help raise the baby. This is a premise from which rom-coms and sitcom hackery can be born — see "Accidentally On Purpose,...

A pair of new NBC comedies are in recasting mode, with a well-known actress looking to take over one of the vacated parts.
The network wants Jenna Elfman -- who starred on NBC's "1600 Penn" this season -- to take a lead role in "The Family Guide," according to TVLine. She would replace Parker Posey, who left the show after filming the pilot. NBC will also recast two parts on "Undateable," which like "The Family Guide" is set for a midseason debut.
"The Family Guide" is about a boy (Eli Baker) and his relationship with recently divorced parents (J.K. Simmons plays his father), and how the family ultimately becomes closer after the divorce. DJ Nash, who previously worked with Elfman on "Accidentally on Purpose," created the show.
"Undateable" is going through its second recasting of the lead female role. Briga Heelan ("Cougar Town") replaced Aly Michalka during the pilot process.

Kelly Preston is returning to the world of series TV with the lead role in ABC's comedy pilot "Keep Calm and Karey On."
Preston will star as Karey, the straight arrow in a family of petty thieves, drug addicts and narcissists. When her brother is sent to prison, she adopts his two children in an attempt to give them a better life.
The cast also includes Jane Seymour ("Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman") as Karey's mother and Majandra Delfino ("Roswell") as Karey's self-absorbed sister. Andrea Abbate ("Accidentally on Purpose") wrote the script.
If the pilot is picked up to series, it would mark Preston's first full-time TV commitment since her role as an oversexed teenager in NBC's short-lived '80s Army base soap "For Love and Honor." She was in the cast of HBO's 2008 pilot for British TV adaptation "Suburban Shootout," but that was not picked up.

With pilot season in full swing there was more big news today from nearly all the major networks. Here's a roundup of the major happenings:
- Jon Favreau will direct the single camera comedy series adaptation of "About a Boy" -- yes, inspired by the Hugh Grant movie and Nick Hornby book of the same name -- executive produced by Jason Katims ("Friday Night Lights," "Parenthood"). Favreau previously directed the pilot for NBC's hit "Revolution" as well as the first two "Iron Man" blockbusters. [Deadline]
- NBC has ordered the pilot "Brenda Forever" from writers Andrew Leeds and David Lampson as a possible starring vehicle for "The Office" and "Bridesmaids" star Ellie Kemper. ABC has given a pilot order to another single-camera comedy about a “modern family”. The network has greenlighted an untitled autobiographical comedy from writer-comedian Andrea Abbate (Accidentally On Purpose), which is produced by 20th Century Fox TV and Marty Adelstein and Shawn Levy’s studio-based 21 Laps/Adelstein. Previously titled Crazy Gene, the comedy centers on Karey, the clean-nosed black sheep in a family of petty thieves, drug addicts, and narcissists. When her brother is sent to prison, she decides to raise his kids along with her adopted black son and give them the normal lives they deserve. The project is based on the real-life experiences of Abbate, who took in her brother’s son while he was in prison and adopted a 13-year-old. “Some families are prone to cancer, mine’s prone to felonies,” Abbate quipped at the time the pitch was sold to ABC in August with a put pilot commitment.

Now Chalke has found her way back into the halls of a busy hospital. This time she’ll appear at Seattle Grace for ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. The big question is this one: Will she be wearing scrubs again?

Celebrating Diy film-making of the endearingly amateurish kind, this festival could mark the moment a joke becomes a serious art form, but let's hope not. Leading the charge are bedroom classics such as Star Wars Uncut, a crowdsourced shot-for-shot recreation made by thousands of under-resourced fans, and Night Of The Living Dead: Reanimated, which does a similar job, except with animation. Screening alongside them are such studio-made takes on Diy film-making as Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind, which coined the term "Sweded", and Son Of Rambow, which oddly echoes Zachary Oberzan's one-man Rambo, Flooding With Love For The Kid. All this plus little extras add up to a delectably silly two-day event.

Single mom Polly (Sarah Chalke) needs a fresh start, and so she seeks help from her mom and dad. Whoops.
Chalke ("Scrubs," "Mad Love") plays a woman determined to be the "best single working mom in the universe" in "How to Live With Your Parents (For the Rest of Your Life)," which easily takes this season's crown for longest show title. She looks to her folks (Elizabeth Perkins and Brad Garrett) for support and a place to live, but mom and dad are pretty happy with their empty-nest life, and they don't see much upside into changing their ways for Polly and her daughter, Natalie (Rachel Eggleston).
