808s & Homebake

Mark Ronson looks like he's stoned in every shot, I love it. Such a laid back approach to interviewing, can only relate it to the style of Louis Theourx. This is a unique approach to a music doco. It's focus is on the tech with each episode featuring a particular sound. It's part educational, part biographical. To be a fly on the reverb chamber with a snare drum getting auto tuned by an 808, the dream.

This Series Is For Music Makers and Music Lovers

'Watch the Sound with Mark Ronson' (2021) is an underrated series covering the major techniques and technology used to make our favorite songs. Music lovers will love to get a behind-the-scene look on how musicians and producers get their specific sounds in the studio. Music makers aka musicians, producers, and sound engineers will be grinning as they amazing musicians explain what they specifically do.

Mark Ronson stays as humble as he can and brings out not just musical icons, but also the producers and sound engineers who work outside of the spotlight. Along with the respect being shown to the musical creators and innovators from the past, this documentary series is almost perfect. Proper credit always given and the history behind iconic songs just make them even more enjoyable.

Its a short series, but undeniably good. I would have loved another season either with another host to show their experience and history, or Mark Ronson looking for enthused, just joking (kind of).

Give it a watch. You'll love music more and might even get a creative spark.

Excellently made

Surprised more people are not talking about this show...it is extremely well made and it showcases the "how" of music. If you want a glimpse into what makes music so magical, watch this show.

Not Bad

I enjoyed the direction these episodes went and the guest they had on. The sampling episode made me want to bust out my Push2 and try sampling again (I'm terrible at it). A well put together documentary but there was something a little, off, for me to give it a higher rating.

Didn't love it

I've been a musician and avid listener/collector my whole life. But for some reason never heard of this guy Mark Ronson. And watching these 8 episodes helped me understand why. He has had commercial success but that is different from actually creating great music, great songs. Something about him rubbed me the wrong way from the get-go. But who knows in another life we could have been friends. If we do in this one, I hope he doesn't read this.

The idea for the show is good and some cool stuff here and there but most of the artists interviewed are quite obscure or has-beens. I'm guessing all the real players didn't wanna have anything to do with this which doesn't surprise me as i wouldn't either if I were them.

I'm guessing this series was aimed more at tiktok culture and djs with tear tattoos on their faces and their annoying, confused fans.

Not for me.

If you love bands/artists like Radiohead, CCR, Brian Eno, Tom Waits, Jon Hopkins, The National, Howlin Wolf, Tchaikovsky, John Maus, Joe Satriani, Vicevoids, Toto, etc.... You will probably share my sentiments.

Thanks for reading.
