Exclusive: Wattpad Webtoon Studios is building out in Europe with the hire of Mar Vila Barcelo.

Based in Madrid, Barcelo will lead and expand on the LA-based studio’s international film and TV series slate, focusing on the European market. She reports into David Madden, Wattpad Webtoon’s Head of Global Entertainment.

Barcelo joins from ITV Studios Iberia, where she was Development Executive at Cattleya Producciones, the Spanish arm of Gomorrah and Citadel Diana maker Cattleya. There she managed the development slate for feature films and series in Spanish-speaking markets, and worked with literary and publishing agents to source new IP.

Her hire is a major one for Wattpad Webtoon Studios, given her previous roles at ICM Partners, Film London and Pure Grass Films.

The teaser has been debuted for “The Captive,” the origin story of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of the novel “Don Quixote.” The historical epic is directed by Alejandro Amenábar, who won an Oscar for “The Sea Inside” and was BAFTA nominated for “The Others.” It will be released by Disney in Spain, while Film Constellation is selling other territories.

“The Captive” recently sold to France (Haut et Court), Greece and Cyprus (Filmtrade/Tanweer), Portugal (Nos Audiovisuais), Bulgaria (Pro Films), Former Yugoslavia (Discovery), and Cis (Russian World Vision), with buyers circling in North America.

The film, which shot last year on locations in Valencia, Alicante and Seville in Spain, is now in post-production. It has been dated for release in Spanish theaters on Oct. 17 with Disney.

Netflix’s upcoming teen-sports drama, Olympo, from the developers of Elite, is headed to the streaming service in June 2025. The series stars Through the Window’s Clara Galle, and 13 Exorcism’s María Romanillos. Here’s what we know so far about Olympo on Netflix.

Olympo is an upcoming Spanish Netflix Original teen sports-drama series created by Jan Matheu, Laia Foguet, and Ibai Abad. Directing duties were split between Marçal Forès, Daniel Barone, Ibai Abad, and Ana Vásquez. The series is produced by Barcelona based Zeta Studios, who are also responsible for the production of Netflix’s beloved Spanish teen-drama series Elite.

When is Olympo coming to Netflix?

Although Olympo was revealed as part of Netflix’s international lineup for 2025, an official release date has not yet been announced. However, we have learned that a preliminary release date of June 20, 2025, has been set.

Haut Et Court will release “The Captive,” a new historical movie about the early life of Miguel de Cervantes, in French cinemas. The author of “Don Quixote” ‘s time in jail in North Africa is depicted in the film as a story.

Oscar-winning director Alejandro Amenábar is in charge of a $15 million project, working again with Haut Et Court after their collaboration on “While at War” in 2019.

The film takes place in Algiers in 1575, when Cervantes was 28 years old. It tells the story of the future writer as Ottoman pirates capture him and wait for Spain to send ransom money. New cast members have just been announced for the third season of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon. The news was revealed as Season 3 gets production underway in Spain.

As announced by AMC Networks on social media, five new names have been added to the Walking Dead family with their roles in Season 3 of Daryl Dixon. Coming on board as new series regulars are Spanish actors Eduardo Noriega (In the Fire), Oscar Jaenada (Chaos Walking), and Alexandra Masangkay (Stags). Spain’s film and TV industries are in their second wave as standout content providers for global streamers. Some of the country’s most intriguing titles will take the international stage this weekend at MipTV in Cannes.

Built on a foundation of hits such as “The Red Band Society,” “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet” and “Locked Up,” a new era of internationally renowned content creation in Spain kicked off in 2018 with Alex Pina’s blockbuster series “Money Heist,” picked up by Netflix.

Since then, Spain has enjoyed a place among the steadiest content suppliers for major players worldwide, taking advantage of its often character-driven dramas, high-quality creators and producers, and a language spoken by more than 600 million people around the globe.

Although the market is continuously evolving, local industry has adapted to different new business models, entering bigger and more ambitious productions, often via co-production. Spanish fiction’s global popularity continues to grow to accommodate audience appetites.

Malaga — Antonio Chavarrías’ “Holy Mother,” Celia Rico’s “Little Loves” and Diogo Viegas’s “Alice’s Diary” play at this year’s 3rd Spanish Screenings Content, the Malaga Festival’s part of the Spanish Screenings Xxl, Spain’s biggest international industry platform in its history, featuring over March 4-7 and – when it comes to Málaga – the monumental number of 222 titles.

In production volume, Spain has never had it so good. Money Heist spinoff Berlin has been renewed for a second season by Netflix.

Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato’s show will begin filming next year.

Berlin, played by Pedro Alonso, will return alongside his entire gang for another run of the spinoff, which was made off the back of the huge global success of Netflix Spain’s La Casa de Papel (Money Heist). The series acts as a prequel to Money Heist, following the protagonist on a different caper.

As the streamer detailed Monday, the titular character played by Pedro Alonso will be back “with a new heist and more love,” with filming set to begin in 2025.

Principal photography is set to begin in April on “The Captive” (“El Cautivo”), the period adventure epic from Alejandro Amenábar, whose “The Sea Inside” won an Oscar for best foreign language film. Film Constellation has boarded worldwide sales, and will introduce the project to buyers at the European Film Market.

The film centers on the origin story of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of the iconic novel “Don Quixote.” At the age of 28, Cervantes was taken captive by the Moors in Algiers, leading to his creative birth.

Miami — In a potentially powerful alliance, Spain’s Zeta Studios, producer of Netflix megahit “Elite,” has signed to develop Latin American Spanish-language webnovels from Wattpad Webtoon Studios, the online publisher via Webtoon of web novel “Through My Window.” Its movie makeover ranks as Netflix’s fourth most-viewed non-English film ever.
