Few can rival the international fame of China’s Zhang Yimou. His directorial debut, Red Sorghum, was an instant hit. Likewise, his later films have become beloved cinematic classics. Domestic audiences often tout his historical dramas as must-see parts of China’s rich cinematic history. However, international audiences will know his name from famous wuxia films like House of Flying Daggers. Yimou's works are often hailed for their ingenuity and insight, and his themes are as uplifting as they are heart-wrenching. Yet, like any other creative, he’s had his critical flops.

One of his most divisive films is A Simple Noodle Story. The borderline surrealist comedy is a near-incoherent mix of puns, slapstick, and psychological thrills. Genre precursors Virgin Spring and A Woman Branded set the stage, while Wes Craven’s TheLast House on the Left and Meir Zarchi's I Spit on Your Grave drew ire among the film community. I Spit on Your Grave, featuring a full 30 minutes of gang rape, was dubbed a “video nasty” (or an ultra-violent exploitation movie deemed inappropriate for mass consumption) in the U.K.

The Berlin Film Festival has unveiled the 34 projects, hailing from 27 countries and selected from 318 submissions, that will be showcased at its Berlinale Co-Production Market, running from February 17 to 21. (scroll down for full list)

The 18 projects in the official selection include upcoming works from Ukrainian directors Kateryna Gornostai (Stop-Zemila) and Antonio Lukich as well as Italian filmmaker Andrea Pallaoro (Monica), Turkey’s Burak Çevik (Hesitation Wound), Serb director and actor Mirjana Karanović (A Good Wife) and Chinese-Japanese directing duo Huang Ji and Ryuji Otsuka (Stonewalling).

The Official Selection projects are already partly financed and have budgets between 600,000 and five million euros.

The Berlinale Directors section showcasing new projects from festival habitués in the early funding stages includes Sally Potter’s upcoming production Alma about a family on an expedition to scatter the ashes of an archaeologist.

Exclusive: German broadcasting network Ard has been accused of censorship following its decision to pull a scheduled broadcast of Palestinian director Annemarie Jacir’s 2017 feature Wajib due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The film’s German co-producer Titus Kreyenberg told Deadline that Wajib had been due to air this Sunday (November 19), with the programming slot set for months and already announced in TV listings.

“It’s been taken off the schedule. Internally, we were told that it was decided that this was not the time to show a Palestinian film,” said Kreyenberg who works under the banner of Berlin and Cologne-based Unafilm with recent credits including Octopus Skin and A Woman.

Deadline has contacted Ard – a joint network involving 10 German regional public broadcasters – as well as Hamburg-based member Ndr, which backed the production. The networks have yet to respond.

Germany has announced its shortlist for the 2024 Oscars, naming the pool of 12 films from which it will select its official contender in the best international film category for the 96th Academy Awards.

For years, by a large head, France has had more titles at the Locarno Festival’s two biggest sections, the Piazza Grande showcase and main International Competition than any other country in the world. 2022 is no exception.
