TLC Fans Wanted Books By Meri & Christine Brown
Sister Wives fans want more than one book. For a while now, Meri Brown has been talking about writing her own tell-all. Ray Liotta was on an emotional high while filming “Cocaine Bear,” according to Elizabeth Banks.
The late “Goodfellas” actor, who unexpectedly died in his sleep in May 2022, wowed the “Cocaine Bear” cast and crew as production wrapped, delivering a moving speech about what production in Ireland meant to him.
“He wrapped his last scene, and he was covered in blood and guts — and then he gave this beautiful speech,” Banks told Esquire. “He said, ‘I’m adopted. My last name’s Liotta, and because of my career, everybody assumes I’m Italian, but I recently found out that I am actually mostly Irish.’ And we’re in Ireland.”
Banks continued, “He said, ‘So this trip has been so special to me because I didn’t understand the connection that I actually had to this place and to the Irish people. And everybody’s been so nice.’ I could tear up...

On September 11, 1985, a former police officer-turned-drug smuggler named Andrew Thornton II dropped himself and around 75 pounds of cocaine out of his private plane over the Chattahoochee National Forest in northern Georgia. But something went wrong: Thornton—who might have hit his head on the way out the door—was found dead in a driveway in Knoxville, Tennessee, his parachute not opening in time, while his plane crashed around 60 miles away.
As for the cocaine, Thornton’s crew on the ground never retrieved it, but two months later, a hunter in the Chattahoochee Forest found a dead 175-pound black bear surrounded by opened packages of what appeared to be Thornton’s coke. Its stomach was full of white powder. The bear had apparently ingested the cocaine (exactly how much is not clear) and died of an overdose.

Laura Linney and Kerry Washington are no strangers to multi-tasking.
The Emmy-nominated performers (Linney with her second consecutive lead drama actress nod for Netflix’s “Ozark” and Washington entering the lead limited series/TV movie actress race with Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere”) not only starred in multiple projects this past television season, but they also pulled double duty on them with key behind-the-scenes titles.
Their shows take hard, emotional and sometimes downright dark looks at the family unit, especially in regards to wealth, class and status in a community, and both women play matriarchal heads of the family who will do anything to protect their own.
Both New York-born women have been acting for decades, effortlessly move between theater and screen and even share a film credit (2011’s “The Details”), so needless to say, there was a lot to discuss when Variety reunited them.

When Jacob Aaron Estes’ latest film — and his first since the unmitigated disaster that was the Tobey Maguire-starring “The Details,” from 2011 — debuted at Sundance this past January, it was under the slightly video-game-esque title “Relive,” a wink at the unexpected nature of its time-traveling drama. Now the film, starring David Oyelowo and “Wrinkle in Time” breakout Storm Reid, has a new title and a chilling first trailer to help sell it.
The film is now known as “Don’t Let Go,” which speaks to another facet of its drama, a canny riff on time travel tropes. Per the film’s official synopsis, it follows “detective Jack Radcliff (Oyelowo) [who] gets a shocking phone call from his recently-murdered niece Ashley (Reid). Working together across time, they race to solve her murder before it can happen.” The film also stars Mykelti Williamson, Brian Tyree Henry, Shinelle Azoroh, Byron Mann, April Grace, and Alfred Molina.

In his previous pair, Jacob Estes worked narratives that overlapped in genres and that featured dissension within group, so while he has patched together a rather small filmography over the long game, perhaps in this case, good things happen to those who wait. Hitting Blumhouse paydirt with a project that promises a bit of horror, sci-fi and thriller type element, formerly known as Only You, the secretive The Sixth Sense sounding Relive went into production in July 2017 with David Oyelowo in the lead. Jacob Estes could be making it a Sundance trifecta with Mean Creek (2004) and The Details (2011) being joined Only You – a horror, sci-fi, thriller that is without details in terms of plot or release dates. Starring Storm Reid, Mykelti Williamson and David Oyelowo, production took place in July of 2017 with Jason Blum backing the project. Knowing the Blumhouse – they’ll want to let this cat out of the bag with a bang, and a Sundance preem a la Get Out would do the trick.

British actor Alex Roe has signed on to play the male lead in Paramount's Rings, which we reported last week will be a prequel to the studio's 2002 thriller The Ring. While that report has yet to be confirmed, it claimed that this new story will be set several years before The Ring, focusing on the origin of Samara's reign of terror and how the mysterious video tape was created. In The Ring, anyone who watches this VHS tape dies seven days later.
We reported in January that Matilda Lutz has signed on as the lead character, but no details about her role were given. Deadline reports that Alex Roe is playing Holt, the boyfriend of Matilda Lutz's character who suddenly becomes distant after he watches the aforementioned tape. Since the earlier report reveals the story will examine how the tape is created, these new details could either mean that the previous report was inaccurate,...

Paramount Pictures has cast little-known Italian actress Matilda Lutz as the female lead for Rings, a follow-up to 2002's The Ring and 2005's The Ring Two which was formerly known as The Ring 3D. While it hasn't been confirmed, this project is expected to continue the continuity from the first two thrillers, although it will feature a brand new cast. Naomi Watts, who starred in both The Ring and The Ring Two, will not be returning for the sequel.
No details were given for Matilda Lutz's character, but the story is said to feature the tormented Samara and a deadly videotape, although no specific story details were released. We reported in July that F. Javier Gutiérrez (Before the Fall, The Crow) signed on to direct, with screenwriter Akiva Goldsman coming aboard in August to rewrite the script, which was originally written by David Loucka (House at the End of the Street,...

A gooey nostalgic look back at that time a young boy’s mom fell in love with their kidnapper, presented under a sexy sweltering summer haze. I’m “biast” (pro): love Reitman, Brolin, and Winslet
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Ladies! Single? Lonely? Starved for human touch? Why not get yourself kidnapped and held hostage by an escaped convict? Guaranteed relationship starter!
I kinda couldn’t believe this is where Labor Day goes. I’m kinda dumbfounded it does so without the teensiest sense of irony or even a hint of awareness that this could be problematic. Stockholm syndrome as actually, genuinely, for-reals romantic? Are they kidding us?
They are not kidding us.

"I could have easily never worked again after Precious," Gabourey Sidibe tells me over breakfast in Los Angeles. "I could be back at my receptionist job and no one would be surprised, but I'm having a very crazy little career that no one thought would happen. Although that was never the plan. "

It's safe to say Tobey Maguire would gladly welcome a new neighbor, just as long as it's not Laura Linney! In a clip from his movie The Details, available on demand now, Maguire meets with the actress who plays a demanding and controlling neighbor. Before heading off to work for the day, the 37-year-old is confronted by Linney who is not happy with the construction project going on nearby at his house. "Look at all this dust floating around," Linney explains. "It's everywhere!" In hopes of calming her down, Maguire generously agrees to do whatever it takes to clean up the mess. "You give me the bill, I'll give you the check,"...

Cathy Jamison's battle with cancer has been, at turns, heart-breaking, hilarious and hard to watch. But perhaps the toughest moment came in last night's The Big C: hereafter season premiere when Cathy asked her family, and fans, to accept her decision to stop chemotherapy.
Buckets of tears would have rained regardless, but the scene in question packed an even more powerful emotional wallop given it was set at the storage locker Cathy purchased and filled with a lifetime of birthday presents for her son, Adam, in season one.
"That was a really emotional scene to film," actor Gabriel Basso, who plays Adam, told ETonline. "It was my first day back filming on season four, and it was the same storage locker from season one, so there was this cool sense of the beginning and the end at the same time."

The Sundance Film Festival may be over, but that doesn’t mean that the year’s first major film fest doesn’t live on in our hearts – or our theaters and VOD apparatus. Like any good film festival, Sundance is not just a fun movie-watching playtime, it’s also a market for new films looking for a distribution home, even films that come complete with big stars (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ashton Kutcher, Paul Rudd, the list goes on and on). But just because a film gets picked up at Sundance — and by a major company, to boot — doesn’t mean that it will get a big, fancy theatrical release in a timely fashion (see the Tobey Maguire- and Elizabeth Banks-starring The Details for proof of that), though it’s a damn good start. So, just which of the many films that bowed at the ‘dance will you be able to see at a theater (or couch...

Ahh, the year in skin.
It's not the golden "Deep Throat" years of the '70s anymore, it's the age of the Internet and no one really goes to the movies to see nudity, but women proved they were hungry for some beefcake with the wild success of "Magic Mike." Meanwhile, A-list actresses bared it all for some compelling reasons that were absolutely integral to the script… hehe.

One of the notable losses in entertainment this past year, actor Michael Clarke Duncan cut short with his passing a number of films ready to bring him on board, and a central example of such was Robert Rodriguez's “Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.” A notoriously quick filmmaker in all respects, Rodriguez has hit a number of delays in pushing the production forward that only increased with Duncan's death, but luckily another actor has stepped into the late actor's role to keep the film on track. Along with Jamie Chung, who will replace Devon Aoki in her assassin role of Miho for the film, actor Dennis Haysbert has been tapped to take over Duncan's returning villain role of Manute in Rodriguez's graphic novel adaptation. Of course prominent for his years on “24” as the President, Haysbert last lent his talents to both “Wreck-It Ralph” and dark indie comedy “The Details,...

Several stars of 2005's Sin City are set to reprise their roles in director Robert Rodriguez's sequel Sin City: A Dame to Kill For. One of those cast members was Michael Clarke Duncan, who was set to return as Manute before tragically passing away in September at the age of 54. Today, we have news that Dennis Haysbert is in talks to step in as Manute. Here's what director Robert Rodriguez had to say about the new addition to his cast.
"Manute is a character that has been part of the heart of the Sin City tales, and the late Michael Clarke Duncan beautifully established that role onscreen. We could not tell the story of Sin City: A Dame to Kill For without Manute and are thrilled to welcome Dennis Haysbert to the cast."
In the original Sin City, Manute kidnaps Gail (Rosario Dawson), prompting Dwight (Clive Owen) to trade...

You think it’s gonna be just another hitman action movie: Look, it’s Brad Pitt with slicked-back hair and an evil goatee and a shotgun! And it’s called Killing Them Softly, fer pete’s sake, so maybe Brad’s gonna be some sort of philosophical hitman or something, but that’s as far as it’ll go, right? But then you learn it’s from writer-director Andrew Dominik, the guy who made The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which also sounded like it was gonna be kickass and bloody but instead turned out to be a cool, dreamy meditation on celebrity. Dominik pulls that trick again, turns a very American mythology of crime and violence in on itself and from that inversion yanks out a mirror with which to show us a startling reflection of America. The image shining darkly from Killing Them Softly is not very flattering,...

The film The Details, directed by Jacob Aaron Estes, stars Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks as the familiar unhappy suburban couple with a raccoon problem. When Maguire has a need to win over his "wack-a-doodle" neighbor Lila (Laura Linney) his life is thrown upside down in an unpredictable and almost incomprehensible way. The journey of the characters in the film meanders through a series of connected but random events that question the values of truth and integrity and examines to what lengths good people will go to protect the ones they love. The film also features Ray Liotta, Kerry Washington and Dennis Haysbert. At the New York press day, I was able to speak with one of it's stars, Laura Linney, and get her personal insight into the dark comedy. We talked about her experience on set, the development of her crazy character and she gave me some personal anecdotes...

They say the Devil is in the details, and they certainly would be right about The Details, a suburban gothic fairy tale starring Tobey Maguire, Elizabeth Banks and Laura Linney. As with butterflies and hurricanes, writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes demonstrates how the picayune particles in life can snowball into out-and-out disaster. Estes piles on the mishaps in a movie that starts out wobbly, but pulls together with a triumphantly disturbing finish.
The Details picks up with Jeff (Tobey Maguire) recounting the sources of his unraveling. Jeff practices gynecology, tends his backyard, and enjoys marriage with Nealy (Elizabeth Banks). Only upon closer inspection do we notice hairline fractures in this picture of yuppie perfection. Raccoons are tearing up the lawn. Jeff’s plans for redoing the house are threatened by a crazy neighbor (Lila, played by loony Laura Linney). And his relationship with Nealy turns out to be more brittle than unshakeable.

[This a re-post of my review from the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The Details opens today in limited release.] The Details is a darkly comic tale that can never quite seem to get a handle on its tone. The film plays with notions of fate but only a fate that will deal out punishment and retribution no matter how much good you do or if you even receive a kindness. That’s not a problem for a black comedy, but The Details grinds to a halt as its main character receives valuable life lessons or as he heads into another predictable comic set-up. Director Jacob Aaron Estes’ best attempt to tie it all together is with an insufferable Danny Elfman-esque score. Stars Tobey Maguire and Laura Linney do a great job handling the comedy, but even their scenes eventually feel repetitive. The Details has a lot to offer, most notably frustration. Estes opens the movie on a promising note by using a gag that would do Chuck Jones proud.

Tobey Maguire exists in a kind of netherworld as a performer. When he played Peter Parker in the original Spider-Man trilogy, he was often criticized for looking too old to play a high school senior or, later, a college freshman. (This, despite the fact that Maguire displayed the right mix of goofiness and angst as Peter and his masked alter ego, more so than Andrew Garfield.) However, though he may look too old to play 20, he’s not yet fully believable as a husband and father, a family man rent asunder by his own dark temptations. Thus, as the foundation of The Details, a twisted new suburban satire, Maguire’s not fully able to sell the adult struggles his lead character goes through.

The Details, out in theaters this Friday, follows the travails of a husband, played by a dopey-faced Tobey Maguire, whose wandering eye and utter boredom with his life leads to infidelity and even darker acts. Check out this clip, below, with Maguire excitedly talking about a guy asphyxiating raccoons to his over-it wife, reading in bed, played by Elizabeth Banks. After the conversation escalates, Banks blurts out, “Don’t deny using a tone when you use a tone. I’m not crazy, I know what I just heard!” To which Maguire replies, “I didn’t call you crazy.” Ah, domestic un-bliss.

The devil is in "The Details," but only in that this smug and airless comedy feels like 91 minutes in hell. The first few minutes promise a Rube Goldberg whirligig of bad behavior, unhappy coincidences and plain old rotten luck, but all writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes ("Mean Creek") can deliver is a group of jerks acting like jerks. If there were any recognizable human beings on screen, this might have delivered the sort of squirmy, uncomfortable laughs that have sustained "Curb Your Enthusiasm" through multiple seasons, but the perpetrators and victims...

“The Details” is one of those dark comedies where everything that can go wrong does. The sophomore film from Jacob Aaron Estes, whose previous film “Mean Creek” won the John Cassavetes Award at Sundance in 2004, was the biggest sale of the 2011, purchased by The Weinstein Company for $8 million. Of the dozen movies this writer saw while he was at the fest, it was one of the more accessible, but didn’t exactly ring of “Little Miss Sunshine”-like success either. The film stars Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks as Jeff and Nealy Lang, young parents who have hit a rough patch in their marriage. Jeff is a doctor, Nealy is an interior decorator and while it’s probably neither’s fault, the passion has clearly gone out of their relationship, the image of the happy suburban couple is immediately shattered by a screaming match between the couple during the opening credits.

In "The Details," Tobey Maguire plays Jeff Lang, a solemn doctor living a seemingly tranquil life in suburban Seattle with his wife Nealy (Elizabeth Banks) and their young child. It doesn't take long to puncture that fantasy: An introductory voiceover establishes that Jeff has lost interest in the restrictions of his mundane world. A string of incidents have led to catastrophe. Jeff tried to act out and instead threatened his stable existence. It's a familiar mold: the perils of suburban discontent have been so thoroughly explored that "The Details" plays like a hodgepodge of familiar circumstances on an assembly line to disaster. It takes only a handful of scenes before Jeff dials up an old friend (Kerry Washington) to moan about his desire for infidelity and winds up sleeping with her. He then must deal with the advances of his creepy neighbor (Laura Linney), an older single woman whose bizarre advances attract Jeff simply because.

Review of The Details: Tobey Maguire is hilarious as a philandering husband but The Details comes up short on laughs. The middle-aged anxiety of philandering husbands and unhappy dads is a somewhat redundant topic for feature comedies and TV sitcoms alike but Tobey Maguire brings a uniquely, mischievous spin to the comic genre in The Details, the first comedy from Mean Creek director Jacob Aaron Estes. As Jeff, a successful doctor but screwed-up husband, Maguire is hilarious battling a family of raccoons intent on digging up the newly planted grass in his golf course-perfect backyard. Of course, the grass and Jeff’s obsession over it are the film’s standout metaphors for Jeff’s once-happy home life steadily falling into ruin.

Through the beginnings of Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio’s careers existed a parallel role choice before diverging in approach, and so it's with perhaps a tinge of familiarity, post-“Revolutionary Road,” that Maguire stepped in for his own take on a crumbling marriage with 2011 Sundance hit “The Details.” However, despite finding distribution coin (to the tune of $8 mil) from The Weinstein Company, the Jacob Aaron Estes (“Mean Creek”) black comedy is just now finding theatrical release next month, but rather than bury the film, they’ve instead ramped up promotion with a slew of new material to witness. Keeping on the more character-based, less superpower-infused path most recently glimpsed from the actor in 2009’s excellent “Brothers,” Maguire stars as one morally questionable half of a seemingly perfect couple in suburban Seattle, with the other being Elizabeth Banks. It's a little hard to remember that Tobey Maguire is now very much a grown-up, though in our defense, he hasn't given us much of a chance to realize that. Since his final go-round as Peter Parker in 2007's Spider-Man 3 Maguire has kept a low profile at the movies, appearing only in the explosive drama Brothers in 2009. But he's about to come back in a major way to play Nick Carraway in Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby, and before then we'll meet back up with him in the upcoming comedy The Details.
