The six short films have been created with Merman, the production company of “Bad Sisters” star Sharon Horgan and producer Clelia Mountford. The shorts will see pop star Lipa reading la Genberg’s “The Details,” “The Crown’s” Menzies reading “Mater 2-10” by Hwang Sok-yong, “Rye Lane” alead Jonsson reading “Not a River” by Selva Almada, “One Day” actor Eleanor Tomlinson reading Jenny Erpenbeck’s “Kairos,” “The Witcher’s” Anya Chalotra reading Jente Posthuma’s “What I’d Rather Not Think About” and “Still Up’s” Antonio Thomas reading “Crooked Plow” by Itamar Vieira Junior.

Short films featuring the likes of Dua Lipa and Tobias Menzies (The Crown, Game of Thrones, Manhunt) reading extracts from the six books on the 2024 shortlist for the International Booker Prize for fiction translated into English will debut on Thursday, courtesy of Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford’s production company Merman.

The other performers are Eleanor Tomlinson (One Day, Poldark, The Outlaws), David Jonsson (Rye Lane, Industry), Anya Chalotra (The Witcher, Wanderlust), and Antonia Thomas (Still Up, Lovesick, The Good Doctor).

The shortlist films are directed by Charlotte Hamblin, a screenwriter, actor and director known for her performances in Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife and Operation Mincemeat. They will be published on the Booker Prizes website and social channels at 9 a.m. London time/1 a.m. LA time on Thursday. A trailer for the films was just posted on YouTube.

Ray Liotta was on an emotional high while filming “Cocaine Bear,” according to Elizabeth Banks.

The late “Goodfellas” actor, who unexpectedly died in his sleep in May 2022, wowed the “Cocaine Bear” cast and crew as production wrapped, delivering a moving speech about what production in Ireland meant to him.

“He wrapped his last scene, and he was covered in blood and guts — and then he gave this beautiful speech,” Banks told Esquire. “He said, ‘I’m adopted. My last name’s Liotta, and because of my career, everybody assumes I’m Italian, but I recently found out that I am actually mostly Irish.’ And we’re in Ireland.”

On September 11, 1985, a former police officer-turned-drug smuggler named Andrew Thornton II dropped himself and around 75 pounds of cocaine out of his private plane over the Chattahoochee National Forest in northern Georgia. But something went wrong: Thornton—who might have hit his head on the way out the door—was found dead in a driveway in Knoxville, Tennessee, his parachute not opening in time, while his plane crashed around 60 miles away.

As for the cocaine, Thornton’s crew on the ground never retrieved it, but two months later, a hunter in the Chattahoochee Forest found a dead 175-pound black bear surrounded by opened packages of what appeared to be Thornton’s coke. Its stomach was full of white powder. The bear had apparently ingested the cocaine (exactly how much is not clear) and died of an overdose.

The Emmy-nominated performers (Linney with her second consecutive lead drama actress nod for Netflix’s “Ozark” and Washington entering the lead limited series/TV movie actress race with Hulu’s “Little Fires Everywhere”) not only starred in multiple projects this past television season, but they also pulled double duty on them with key behind-the-scenes titles.

When Jacob Aaron Estes’ latest film — and his first since the unmitigated disaster that was the Tobey Maguire-starring “The Details,” from 2011 — debuted at Sundance this past January, it was under the slightly video-game-esque title “Relive,” a wink at the unexpected nature of its time-traveling drama. Now the film, starring David Oyelowo and “Wrinkle in Time” breakout Storm Reid, has a new title and a chilling first trailer to help sell it.

The film is now known as “Don’t Let Go,” which speaks to another facet of its drama, a canny riff on time travel tropes. Per the film’s official synopsis, it follows “detective Jack Radcliff (Oyelowo) [who] gets a shocking phone call from his recently-murdered niece Ashley (Reid). Working together across time, they race to solve her murder before it can happen.” The film also stars Mykelti Williamson, Brian Tyree Henry, Shinelle Azoroh, Byron Mann, April Grace, and Alfred Molina.

“Relive” hinges on a clever premise, and boasts a cast that includes David Oyelowo, Storm Reid, Bryan Tyree Henry, Alfred Molina, and Mykelti Williamson. It is written and directed by Jacob Aaron Estes, who also helmed “Mean Creek” and “The Details,” and comes from the good folks at Blumhouse.

In his previous pair, Jacob Estes worked narratives that overlapped in genres and that featured dissension within group, so while he has patched together a rather small filmography over the long game, perhaps in this case, good things happen to those who wait. Hitting Blumhouse paydirt with a project that promises a bit of horror, sci-fi and thriller type element, formerly known as Only You, the secretive The Sixth Sense sounding Relive went into production in July 2017 with David Oyelowo in the lead. This is Estes’ third feature (2004’s Mean Creek (trailer) was followed by 2011’s The Details) film to premiere at Sundance in just as many tries.…...

Jacob Estes could be making it a Sundance trifecta with Mean Creek (2004) and The Details (2011) being joined Only You – a horror, sci-fi, thriller that is without details in terms of plot or release dates. Starring Storm Reid, Mykelti Williamson and David Oyelowo, production took place in July of 2017 with Jason Blum backing the project. Knowing the Blumhouse – they’ll want to let this cat out of the bag with a bang, and a Sundance preem a la Get Out would do the trick.

Bryan Zuriff, the executive producer of the Showtime hit “Ray Donovan,” pleaded guilty today in a high-stakes illegal sports gambling business run by the mob. Fox reported that Zuriff will pay a $500,000 fine and could be sentenced to up to five years in prison in November. Cathy Jamison's battle with cancer has been, at turns, heart-breaking, hilarious and hard to watch. But perhaps the toughest moment came in last night's The Big C: hereafter season premiere when Cathy asked her family, and fans, to accept her decision to stop chemotherapy.

Buckets of tears would have rained regardless, but the scene in question packed an even more powerful emotional wallop given it was set at the storage locker Cathy purchased and filled with a lifetime of birthday presents for her son, Adam, in season one.

Only upon closer inspection do we notice hairline fractures in this picture of yuppie perfection. Raccoons are tearing up the lawn. Jeff’s plans for redoing the house are threatened by a crazy neighbor (Lila, played by loony Laura Linney). And his relationship with Nealy turns out to be more brittle than unshakeable.

[This a re-post of my review from the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. The Details opens today in limited release.] The Details is a darkly comic tale that can never quite seem to get a handle on its tone. The film plays with notions of fate but only a fate that will deal out punishment and retribution no matter how much good you do or if you even receive a kindness. That’s not a problem for a black comedy, but The Details grinds to a halt as its main character receives valuable life lessons or as he heads into another predictable comic set-up. Director Jacob Aaron Estes’ best attempt to tie it all together is with an insufferable Danny Elfman-esque score. Stars Tobey Maguire and Laura Linney do a great job handling the comedy, but even their scenes eventually feel repetitive. The Details has a lot to offer, most notably frustration. Estes opens the movie on a promising note by using a gag that would do Chuck Jones proud.

Tobey Maguire exists in a kind of netherworld as a performer. When he played Peter Parker in the original Spider-Man trilogy, he was often criticized for looking too old to play a high school senior or, later, a college freshman. (This, despite the fact that Maguire displayed the right mix of goofiness and angst as Peter and his masked alter ego, more so than Andrew Garfield.) However, though he may look too old to play 20, he’s not yet fully believable as a husband and father, a family man rent asunder by his own dark temptations. Thus, as the foundation of The Details, a twisted new suburban satire, Maguire’s not fully able to sell the adult struggles his lead character goes through.

The Details, out in theaters this Friday, follows the travails of a husband, played by a dopey-faced Tobey Maguire, whose wandering eye and utter boredom with his life leads to infidelity and even darker acts. Check out this clip, below, with Maguire excitedly talking about a guy asphyxiating raccoons to his over-it wife, reading in bed, played by Elizabeth Banks. After the conversation escalates, Banks blurts out, “Don’t deny using a tone when you use a tone. I’m not crazy, I know what I just heard!” To which Maguire replies, “I didn’t call you crazy.” Ah, domestic un-bliss.

The devil is in "The Details," but only in that this smug and airless comedy feels like 91 minutes in hell. The first few minutes promise a Rube Goldberg whirligig of bad behavior, unhappy coincidences and plain old rotten luck, but all writer-director Jacob Aaron Estes ("Mean Creek") can deliver is a group of jerks acting like jerks. “The Details” is one of those dark comedies where everything that can go wrong does. The sophomore film from Jacob Aaron Estes, whose previous film “Mean Creek” won the John Cassavetes Award at Sundance in 2004, was the biggest sale of the 2011, purchased by The Weinstein Company for $8 million. Of the dozen movies this writer saw while he was at the fest, it was one of the more accessible, but didn’t exactly ring of “Little Miss Sunshine”-like success either. The film stars Tobey Maguire and Elizabeth Banks as Jeff and Nealy Lang, young parents who have hit a rough patch in their marriage. Jeff is a doctor, Nealy is an interior decorator and while it’s probably neither’s fault, the passion has clearly gone out of their relationship, the image of the happy suburban couple is immediately shattered by a screaming match between the couple during the opening credits.

In "The Details," Tobey Maguire plays Jeff Lang, a solemn doctor living a seemingly tranquil life in suburban Seattle with his wife Nealy (Elizabeth Banks) and their young child. It doesn't take long to puncture that fantasy: An introductory voiceover establishes that Jeff has lost interest in the restrictions of his mundane world. It's a little hard to remember that Tobey Maguire is now very much a grown-up, though in our defense, he hasn't given us much of a chance to realize that. Since his final go-round as Peter Parker in 2007's Spider-Man 3 Maguire has kept a low profile at the movies, appearing only in the explosive drama Brothers in 2009.
