Ringo always wanted to be a cowboy. He grew up in the toughest corner of Liverpool, dreaming of escaping to the Wild West, hoping to emigrate to Texas. He was the biggest country fan in the Beatles, the one who sang the Buck Owens classic “Act Naturally” as well as original twangers like “What Goes On” and “Don’t Pass Me By.” Now in his eighties, still a hell of a dancer, living on broccoli and blueberries, Sir Ringo Starr makes his first country album in 50 years. Look Up, with producer T Bone Burnett,...

Ringo Starr was always the most country of the Beatles, covering Buck Owens’ “Act Naturally” and professing his love of Kitty Wells, his favorite singer. Fifty-five years since he released the twangy country solo album Beaucoups of Blues in 1970, Starr will return to the genre with Look Up, a new album arriving Jan. 10, 2025. It’s a collection of 11 songs — many of them cowritten by T Bone Burnett, who produced the album — including the breakup ballad “Time on My Hands,” out today.

“They’re gonna put me in the movies,” Ringo Starr sang on The Ed Sullivan Show as the Beatles covered Buck Owens’ hit “Act Naturally.” The 1965 appearance featured songs from the group’s new film, Help!, director Richard Lester’s send-up of James Bond movies and other elements of spymania, as well as a follow-up to the greatest jukebox movie ever made, A Hard Day’s Night (1964). Both films put the rhythm up front. It was natural.
Prior to the nationally broadcast live performance, Starr prepared the audience by introducing himself as “all nervous and out of tune,” and smiled embarrassedly without missing or slowing a beat through his propulsive country swing. Starr was a natural performer, a locally famous beat-keeper in Liverpool before joining the Beatles, whose rhythm patterns had a character which set him apart from other drummers. His beats had personality. As the song says, he played the...

On The Beatles’ cover of Buck Owens’ song, "Act Naturally," Ringo Starr sang the line, “Might win an Oscar you can never tell." While The Beatles did win an Oscar back in 1971 for the original Let It Be documentary, they can add an Emmy — five, to be exact — to their resume as the Peter Jackson-directed Disney+ series, The Beatles: Get Back took home five awards at the 74th Primetime Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Tracing the progression of rock ‘n’ roll as art in the 1960s, it’s easy to see how each of the great bands of the time attempted to build on and outdo what had come just before. The Beach Boys’ 1966 release “Pet Sounds” has often been cited by Paul McCartney as the springboard for the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper” the following year. And hearing that psych-pop landmark, what evolutionary choice did the Byrds have in 1968 but to blow the collective minds of the Haight-Ashbury generation with… an album of traditional country music.
“Sweetheart of the Rodeo” is widely regarded as the world’s first true country-rock album. That R&R&C&W landmark status makes it riper than any other effort in the Byrds’ catalog — even their earlier, far more successful efforts — for silver-haired, silver-anniversary commemoration. Fans are getting the desired “Sweetheart” deal with a tour headlined by ex-Byrds Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman,...
