Arkusan Martinsson (2009)
Arkusan is 23 years old, unemployed and still living with his mother. Nothing by choice. Not even hanging out with his “best friend” Ronkas is by choice. Being unemployed means being broke, so the only way to get by for Arkusan is to drift around his small hometown Brunkaby in Sweden and indulge in conversations about dreams, depression and masturbation with his fellow underfinanced compadres.

During one boring, grey day Arkusan summarizes his thoughts, views and opinions about his friends, his future prospects and living todayÂ’s Sweden.

Wow, unbelievable writing and film-making all around for a 22 year old filmmaker...

Truly a great film. Much like Kevin Smith's Clerks, but with Johansson's unique take. Excellent, excellent writing, kept my attention, really well made all around. It is embarrassing to me but unbelievable that the film was made for like $100, it looks more like it was made by veteran filmmakers as a fun project for a teenie budget of $5000 to $10,000. I am honestly and truly, really awaiting to see ANYTHING this filmmaker puts out, any feature film especially. He is really gonna do it, make his mark as an indy filmmaker... I'm rooting for him all the way at least, and I've been in this film-making game for more than 12 years full time. He's really just a true talent all around as a filmmaker. Words to the filmmaker: hang in there. Film-making is the only easy thing, life all around the film-making, jobs, money, relationships, etc., they can get really, REALLY crazy. Just don't let them and as long as you are NOT thinking of suicide as an option and you know that film-making is your main or one of your top two priorities, you will succeed in WHATEVER WAY YOU DESIRE. You are already proving yourself with Arkusan. Everybody, no joke, the film is good. Period. No contest. Well made all around, well done cinematography (especially for not having a lighting budget), top notch editing and post production while still kept simple with an indy feel. I can't wait to see what else this guy writes first and foremost, I think he is a brilliant writer who may turn into something really amazing if he keeps it up as a writer foremost.

    Swedish Social Criticism

I really don't know where to start, but I would like to give the writer and director Jimmy Johansson gratitude who has given me the opportunity to behold one of Sweden's most important amateur movies, that besides anxiety narratives also express a huge great charm. I recognize a lot in many of the characters which alludes a stereotypical view of youth unemployment in Sweden.

Much of the film feels like a real and embellished version of the cartoon character "Rocky" by Martin Kellerman. Characters' performance can also be compared in class with Lukas Moodysson's film "Show Me Love" from 1998 - but with a bit more unusual, developed and comic twist that I absolutely love. But what I most like about the movie is that Jimmy Johansson has managed to capture its socially critical view of the unemployed youth. The problem is that it actually looks like this in real life. Arkusan says in a small parenthesis that he actually wants to work, but there is no way for him to find a job. The grim emptiness and the feeling of never having money, never have the opportunity to do fun things with friends - believe me, it really is a horrible feeling. And worst of all is when it goes so far that you have to beg for things from others. It is mainly what this movie is all about - to live as a poor and worthless youth.

The film's length of 52 minutes is excellent and does not need to play out longer. Much of the film's concept entertains every minute and there are not many parts that fall off its storyboard. It is recorded in Jonkoping, Huskvarna and Gothenburg, so it's great that I who living in Sweden recognize some places that the film is set on. It also contains small, short sequences including New York and New Jersey. It even includes a sound stage by Lloyd Kaufman from Troma Entertainment, this sequence is revealed in the film's intro when Arkusan masturbate to the porn movie "Cream Cat 3".

The soundtrack is made up of local talent, partly as horror punk-rockers SISTER, but also SPDA, Apsvett feat Ralph ez Boston and gender-rocker "Alter Egon." I must not forget to mention that splatter-rap king "Goretex" is also involved. Another fun trivia is that the film would have included a scene with the Swedish porn actress Samson Biceps from, among others, Mike Beck porn series "Riding School". This, however, never happened due to financial problems.

Just to have cost ten pieces DV tape, a dog leash and a bunch of amateur actors, this is an absolutely brilliant film. It gives a directed purse park to today's society and plays out as an anarchist way into the bone marrow. Despite the efforts of the actor is in addition to the unique performance, you know, after all, what the movie are about, and it quickly becomes concerned by Arkusan. I recommend this film highly, and if you don't understand the film's message the first time, make sure to take a second look or even a third time. It can be seen in infinity!
