America Ferrera has been acting professionally since 2002. It’s often said it’s not the awards people remember, but the movies themselves. And though America Ferrera may not have won Best Supporting Actress tonight for Barbie, her speech on behalf of all hardworking women in the feature film about the Mattel doll is one for the eras.

“It’s been amazing — to be part of something that hits the culture the way that it did. And it made history, and to have been the human and to deliver Gloria’s journey and to have that be so embraced by the audience, is so wonderful. It speaks to people’s desires to be seen and to hear the truth or what feels true to them,” Ferrera told Deadline’s Antonia Blyth on the Oscar red carpet tonight.

Asked whether she was up for Barbie 2, Ferrera said, “Yeah, we’ll see” then trying to play coy went “Um, bye!

Oscar nominee America Ferrera has been cast in her next role outside of Barbie World.

Ferrera has signed on to star in Oscar nominee Paul Greengrass’ upcoming drama “The Lost Bus” alongside Academy Award winner Matthew McConaughey, Variety has learned exclusively.

Being developed, produced and distributed by Apple Original Films with an original script by Brad Inglesby (“Mare of Easttown”), the film is based on Lizzie Johnson’s book “Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire” about the devastating 2018 California wildfires that resulted in over 100 deaths and destroyed the majority of the town of Paradise. The fires were the deadliest in the state’s history. The movie centers on Kevin McKay (McConaughey) and Mary Ludwig (Ferrera), a bus driver and teacher who lead a school bus full of young students through the Camp Fire. The film will go into production this spring.

Deadline reports that the film will be based on Erika Sánchez' bestselling novel of the same name. The project was first announced in 2021, when it was being developed by Netflix; the film has since moved to Amazon, with Ferrera still attached. Although this will be her first feature, Ferrera is no stranger to the director's chair; she previously directed four episodes of her NBC sitcom Superstore, and five episodes of the Netflix series Gentefied, which she also executive produced.

America Ferrera has made a career of playing real women, ranging from portraits of historical figures (such as political activist Helen Chávez in “Cesar Chavez”) to portrayals of the relatable plights faced by everyday girls everywhere (as embodied by the actress’ viral speech in “Barbie.”)

Ferrera’s selection of roles have seeming all lead to her turn in Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie,” which landed Ferrera a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the 2024 Oscars. But the former teen star was already an icon to fans of the “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” franchise, “Ugly Betty,” and “Superstore.” “Barbie” was just a nice reminder that maybe we’ve all been taking Ferrera’s talents for granted too long.

Let’s not forget that Ferrera made history by winning the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for “Ugly Betty,” becoming the first Latina woman to take home the prize in the category.

The Critics Choice Awards recognized America Ferrera with a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in Barbie, and the Emmy Award-winner has also been selected to receive the 8th Annual SeeHer Award during the 2024 Critics Choice Awards. The special honor was created to “honor a woman who advocates for gender equality, portrays characters with authenticity, defies stereotypes, and pushes boundaries.”

Ferrera joins a list of SeeHer honorees that includes Viola Davis (2017), Gal Gadot (2018), Claire Foy (2019), Kristen Bell (2020), Zendaya (2021), Halle Berry (2022), and Janelle Monáe (2023).

The 29th Annual Critics Choice Awards will be hosted by Chelsea Handler and will air on Sunday, January 14, 2024 at 7pm Et/Pt on The CW.

America Ferrera has been set to receive the annual SeeHer Award at the 29th annual Critics Choice Awards, with the honor to be bestowed during next month’s ceremony.

The award honors a woman who advocates for gender equality, portrays characters with authenticity, defies stereotypes and pushes boundaries. Previous recipients include Viola Davis, Gal Gadot, Claire Foy, Kristen Bell, Zendaya, Halle Berry and in 2023 Janelle Monáe.

Ferrera had a big year co-starring in the year’s biggest box office blockbuster, Warner Bros’ Barbie, as well as in Dumb Money. She received the Groundbreaker Award earlier this month at the Critics Choice Association’s Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black, Latino and Aapi Achievements.

Sher also was nominated for Critics Choice supporting actress award as part of Barbie‘s haul of a leading 18 nominations. Winners will be revealed in a ceremony set to air January 14 on the CW with Chelsea Handler hosting.

It didn’t take long for America Ferrera to find the personal connection in the speech she delivers as Gloria in the box-office smash “Barbie.”

“I think when we’re not historically meant to be in a room, it’s very difficult to show up in those spaces as your whole self,” she says on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast. “Because you are taught to be grateful, you’re in the room. When you’re coming from a position of having a debt you owe to whoever opened that door for you and let you in, there’s this unspoken reminder that ‘you’re here somehow as a favor.’ And if we opened the door to let you in, we can open the door and let you out. Getting in the room is not the end of the work; it’s only the beginning.”
