10 Best Hidden-Gem Anime You Shouldn't Miss (& Where to Stream Them)
Image
It's easy for any anime fan to find a popular new title to try, such as action series like Kaiju No. 8 or romance anime like Komi Can't Communicate, but the real fun is finding hidden gems or half-forgotten anime. Those titles feel like a fresh treat when anime fans stumble upon them on the major streaming platforms, and even if those anime were never 10/10 classics, they are still rewarding to watch after being found in remote corners of the anime world.

Some of these hidden gem anime were once fairly mainstream but have since fallen into partial obscurity with the lack of new seasons, or got overshadowed by a bigger, more popular anime of a similar genre. All of them deserve another chance at popularity, so if enough anime fans track down these half-forgotten gems and try them out, these series might re-enter the conversation, at least for a brief time.

Award-Winning Manga's Harsh Premise Reflects a Massive Real-World Problem
Image
Blue Period is a mature story about professional development and inner strength. Yamaguchi portrays the struggles of university students and the uncertainty of their professional futures. Yatora's journey in the manga reflects universal themes of self-identity and dedication in pursuing success.

Often, anime series are filled with fun tropes and exciting fights, but not Blue Period. Despite not being the usual eye-catching manga, it still gained vast popularity after winning Kodanshas Best General Manga in 2020 and then receiving an anime adaptation in 2021. Blue Period is more of an introspective and mature story, common traits for a seinen manga. Although its been over five years since it began serializing, the storys premise only becomes more relevant as time passes, reflecting a widespread problem todays youth faces.

The author, Tsubasa Yamaguchi, has poured a lot of her own experiences into the story. In an interview for Spanish news site Ramen Para Dos,...

Japan Cuts 2024: 5 Must-See Movies at North America’s Largest Japanese Film Fest

Back in 2023, it was reported that the manga would be going on a lengthy hiatus, but no specific reason for it has been provided. It probably had to do with the mangaka’s fatigue and health, which is the most common reason for hiatuses in the industry. And while it had been confirmed...

Which Anime Characters Have The Most Plot Armor
Image
Plot armor is one of (if not) the most polarizing tropes in the anime community. The term is often used to backhandedly explain how a character — usually the protagonist — won impossible fights they should've lost or even died in. Despite the stakes, it was obvious that these heroes couldn't lose or die because the plot needed them around.

While some uses of plot armor are egregious, its mere existence does not make a character and their anime bad. It could be argued that all main characters have a bit of plot armor. It's a trope that can help deepen or elevate a character if used properly. The opposite is also true, as badly used plot armor can ruin the best anime fighters and make them look like cheaters.

Warning: Spoilers ahead.

The Most Realistic Anime That Don't Feature Sports
Image
The Japanese anime industry features plenty of excellent franchises in every cinematic genre there is, meaning there's an anime series for everyone out there. Some fans love shonen-style action with magic and monsters, such as Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia, while others prefer romance series like Fruits Basket or horror like Another. Other anime fans would rather watch something more grounded and enjoy a series that doesn't rely on magic, aliens, or science fiction to tell a great story.

These "realistic" anime series take place in the real world, using realistic characters and conflicts to create a compelling narrative from beginning to end. Sports series are an example of this, such as Haikyuu!! and Slam Dunk, and for fans less interested in sports, a variety of romance, drama, and slice-of-life anime series stand out as the best realistic anime that don't need jerseys and sports stadiums to drive the plot.
