Martin Kemp, the famed actor/musician has turned his hand to horror, bringing us his impressive directorial debut Stalker. It’s not often that a woman stalks another woman in this genre and here Jane March, who found fame in The Lover, plays the part of a psychotic female to chilling perfection. In this interview Kemp talks about being a horror fan, why he prefers directing to acting and compares his experience in the Celebrity Big Brother House to The Thing.
You wrote the screenplay for Stalker, where did the inspiration for the story come from?
Jonathan Sothcott, the producer, came to me asking me to rewrite the seventies movie ‘The House On Straw Hill’, but after looking at it I decided to just take a seed from it and send it on to a different journey, but the basic principle is still there.

Stalker, Martin Kemp's debut as a director, is a little like watching a man make his way through a pitch-black room by feel. Best known for his starring role in The Krays, and to UK TV audiences for a long-running stint on the soap opera Eastenders, Kemp's first feature behind the camera was originally planned as a remake of the 1970s video nasty The House on Straw Hill. Stalker follows Paula (Anna Brecon) a struggling writer trying to pen her second novel at a country retreat who finds Linda, her new assistant has some horrifying ulterior motives for wanting to help finish the manuscript. Part Single White Female, part Hammer Horror camp, part artsy, would-be giallo shocker, all on a shoestring budget Stalker is a...

Stalker, which is both written and directed by Kemp, tells the tale of a famous novelist, played by Anna Brecon, struggling with writers-block who retreats to the country to work on her new book having been menaced by a dark figure from her past. The film, from prolific UK studio Black and Blue Films, is based on the notorious video nasty Expose and is produced by Jonathan Sothcott who in a statement released said about the award:

Lets forget for a moment that this film is directed by Martin Kemp and judge it on its own terms. Every work of art deserves to be reviewed as such, and unfortunately Ive always found Mr. Kemp to be a comedy figure of fun ever since he starred in a series of television adverts for leather couches which led my friends and I to project a leather couch fetish on the man and invent various maneuvers and techniques on how he might straddle a fine leather sofa and enjoy the sensual, leathery feeling. So lets ask the real question; is Stalker a decent horror film? Well, not really, but it tries hard and its heart is very much in the right place.

Why wait till Halloween to wallow in the guts? This early autumn festival brings you fresh horror meat that's bound to be figuring later in the season. Like the promising opener Retreat, starring Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy and Jamie Bell, or Stalker, the surprisingly nasty directorial debut of Martin Kemp. The four-day event spans the spectrum from lighthearted gore (slacker psycho comedy Some Guy Who Kills People) to really-not-funny-at-all dystopian nightmare (nuclear apocalypse horror The Divide), with special guests and horror gaming in between.
AMC Cinema, Thu to 9 Oct
Bicycle Film Festival, London
If you thought the topic of bicycles on film was rather limited, you'd be underestimating this resourceful global festival, which seems to find something new in the field of human-powered two-wheeled transportation every year. Did you know, for example, about the post-bmx street stunt scene in Accra, Ghana? If not, you need to see Bikelordz.

Stalker
Stars: Anna Brecon, Jane March, Linda Hayden, Colin Salmon, Billy Murray, Jennifer Matter | Written and Directed by Martin Kemp
“Hey,” I thought as Stalker’s opening scene began; a sequence in which a young woman runs through some woods in the magic hour. “This looks just like that short film I made in media studies at sixth form!” A rather unfortunate indictment to be sure, but hey, I learnt a lot from media studies. Ha ha ha!
Stalker is a remake/reimagining/whatever of the 1976 video nasty Exposé, in which struggling author Paula Martin (Brecon) relocates to a spooky old house in the middle of nowhere with her Pa Linda (March) in order to write her new book, whereupon bad shit starts to go down as Paula battles her personal demons. It’s directed by Martin Kemp. The same Martin Kemp who was in Spandau Ballet and Eastenders. That guy.

In the film, a writer struggling with her second novel is terrorized by a homicidal Pa. Stalker also written by Martin Kemp, stars Jane March, Colin Salmon, Anna Brecon, Billy Murray, Jeniffer Matter and Linda Hayden.

It's that time of year when the vaults are prised open, the cinematic nightmares of the world are unleashed, and movie houses across the land compete to present the scariest horror-themed festival with the corniest name. Halloween festivals have been steadily multiplying, like marauding zombies or Tesco Metros, so here's a handy breakdown …
The cheesiest name award has to go to Derby's Dead And Breakfast (Quad, 30 Oct), although the title does at least make sense as it's an all-nighter. And after sitting through the likes of Evil Dead II, Halloween, Night Of The Demon and Bubba Ho-tep, who wouldn't fancy a bacon butty, if not some black pudding? The other hot all-nighter tickets are the Electric's Vintage 80s Horror All-Nighter (31 Oct, Electric Cinema, W11) which has The Thing, Evil Dead II, Re-Animator and Poltergeist, washed down with Michael Jackson's Thriller. The BFI IMAX Scary 3D Halloween all-nighter (30 Oct, BFI IMAX,...

The ever-working producer Jonathan Sothcott dropped us a line today to inform us that Exposé, a remake of the 1970's film of the same name, has undergone a title change, and of course he hit us off with some new artwork as well.
The flick has been renamed to Stalker because as Sothcott put it, "The title Exposé doesn't really mean anything, and it just wasn't sticking."
Synopsis

In addition to Dead Cert, which he just provided us an update on, producer Jonathan Sothcott has also been working on Exposé, a remake of the 1970's film of the same name. He dropped us a line with some info on Exposé along with a still, the trailer, and the poster art.
According to Sothcott, "The film has taken a year to get to the screen and has been a real labour of love for myself and [director] Martin Kemp, but Exposé is finally completed. For a low budget movie we had an amazing cast - a bona fide Hollywood star in the brilliant Jane March, a brilliant and versatile leading lady in Anna Brecon, and a really offbeat but superb turn from Billy Murray as a slippery journalist. And Martin directed them all with real skill, drawing out layered, subtle performances of the type you don't often get in this genre.

Now here's a flick about vampires we can really get behind! That's right, kids, you won't be finding any sparkling teenage brooders in Steven Lawson's UK vampire import Dead Cert, and we've got some new artwork and stills to prove it!
Starring Craig Fairbrass and Billy Murray, director Steve Lawson's Dead Cert follows a gang of tough London gangsters who get more than they bargained for when a group of businessmen make an offer to buy their club, the Inferno. They turn out to be nothing less than vampires wanting their land back and turn viciously on the gangsters when their demands are not met.
"One of the things I strove to give this movie is a sense of history, of vampire lore," says writer/producer Jonathan Sothcott. "In a lot of ways this is a super-modern version of Dracula, which is a pretty big undertaking given that...

Producer Jonathan Sothcott sent along yet another couple of pics from his new vampire film Dead Cert, this time depicting veteran British actor Billy Murray as lead bloodsucker Dante Livenko. Sothcott and Murray also shared a couple of quick comments about the role and movie.
“To follow in the footsteps of actors such as Christopher Lee, Jack Palance, Louis Jourdan and Frank Langella is a thrill,” Murray, flashing his fangs with Loretta Basey in the first pic below, tells Fango. “This is one of the great parts, and I’m loving playing it. I am a much darker, more terrifying vampire than the Twilight audience is used too. It’s very gory.”
“Billy is one of the most underrated actors in the country,” Sothcott adds. “Someone recently described him at a meeting as simply ‘Billy Murray, English icon,’ and that’s what he is. But his vampire king is very...

When it comes to the recent output of zombie movies, it appears the the running "infected" zombie is greatly outpacing George Romero's classic, lumbering zombie. British production studio Black And White Films have two upcoming genre films with Dead Cert, a movie about the classic struggle between gangsters and vampires, and Expose, a remake of the 1976 film of the same name about a psycho personal assistant to a novelist, and now are jumping into the zombie genre with Devil's Playground.
Devil's Playground will be a infected zombie film about a killer (Craig Fairbrass from Dead Cert) who must find a cure to the illness causing the zombie apocalypse since he is slowly turning into a zombie as well. Myanna Burning (The Descent) plays the woman who may have the secret for the cure, while Danny Dyer (Severance) plays her ex-cop boyfriend. Janet Montgomery (Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead...
