After swirling through the box office and making an impact, Twisters spins its way onto a new streaming service. The long-awaited sequel to the award-winning original, Twister, debuts on Amazon Prime Video and finds instant success on the popular streamer.
Twisters debuted via Prime Video on Mar. 18, nearly eight months after its theatrical debut, and is already the top-ranked movie on the platform. The disaster film sequel's Prime Video success adds to its streaming prowess on Peacock, where it debuted last November and outperformed the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer with its early returns.
Coming nearly three decades after the Oscar-nominated Twister, Twisters is a standalone sequel to the original, not carrying over characters or storylines from the first film, though it maintains the movie's spirit. The film sees Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar-Jones) return to storm chasing after a tragic event from her days as a meteorology student, looking to track a tornado...

Darren Aronofsky is circling to direct Netflix’s Cujo film, based on the novel by Stephen King.
Deadline first reported the news of the film adaptation , with Roy Lee attached to produce in the deal made last week.
The 1981 novel was originally adapted into a thriller film in 1983 starring Dee Wallace as a mother protecting her sone from a 200-pound St. Bernard that turned rabid after being bit by a bat. The formerly friendly hound transformed into one of cold calculation that left a trail of bodies in its wake.
The climactic scene in that film took place when Wallace’s mother and her son face the difficult decision of battling heatstroke in a car that won’t start or confronting the big, rabid dog waiting for them outside the small vehicle.
Aronofsky’s more recent projects include Postcard from Earth (2023) and The Whale (2022) starring Brendan Fraser...

We found out last week that a new take on Stephen King's killer dog novel, Cujo, is in the works for Netflix, and the project may have nabbed a somewhat surprising director.
According to Jeff Sneider in his latest newsletter (and since backed up by THR), Darren Aronofsky is in negotiations to helm the movie.
Though some would consider this the filmmaker's first foray into the horror genre, that's certainly debatable. Aronofsky has included horror elements in a number of his previous films, and many would view the likes of Mother!, Black Swan, and even Requiem for a Dream to be full-on horror movies.
King's novel focuses on a mother and her young seizer-prone son being terrorized by a huge St. Bernard who becomes a rabid killing machine after being bitten by a bat.
Cujo was previously adapted for the big screen back in 1983, with Lewis Teague directing from...

One of the most panned horror movies based on the works of seminal author Stephen King has found surprise success on free streaming. Despite the quality of the source material, the films based on the works of horror author Stephen King are not always great. The big screen has hosted plenty of masterpieces like The Shining, Stand by Me, and The Shawshank Redemption, but his name is not exactly equivalent to guaranteed success. Cell, The Dark Tower and Riding the Bullet are a few which failed to earn acclaim. And, in the middle ground, where the most divisive movies remain, you will find Thinner.
Thinner, the body horror film based on the book of the same name by Stephen King, has suddenly become a hit on the streaming platform Tubi, a.k.a. one of the few streamers that doesn't require you to pay a single penny or even register.

In surprising news, Netflix’s recently announced take on Stephen King’s killer dog story Cujo looks to have attracted Darren Aronofsky.
Well, it’s good to know that film news still has the capacity to surprise us. According to a report at The InSneider, Darren Aronofsky is said to be in line to direct the freshly announced Cujo remake at Netflix. The director of films such as Black Swan and Requiem For A Dream is a master at depicting psychological torment, and the tale of a rabid killer dog attacking a woman and her young son as they’re trapped in a car certainly has the kind of narrative set-up that will allow Aronofsky to deploy tricks of his trade.
After all, this is the filmmaker that gave us the delightfully bonkers mother!, which put Jennifer Lawrence through some of the strangest psychological horror we can remember seeing in some time.

The world of cinema seems to be going through yet another transformation amid remakes of classic stories for modern audiences. The upcoming Glen Powell starrer movie The Running Man will be the new adaptation of Stephen King’s The Running Man following the 1987 one.
After some recent hits, Glen Powell is stepping into the role originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger. The new The Running Man may have all the ingredients of a remake, but it certainly is a remake that maintains the core elements of the source.

The combination of Powell’s strong new-market appeal, Edgar Wright’s unusual directorial style, and a story that feels ever more significant in this reality TV-saturated world comes with a sense of great anticipation. Let’s explore some reasons the adaptation is worthy of your attention.

The powers that be have assembled various teams across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We’ve had the Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes; then intergalactic ‘a-holes’, the Guardians Of The Galaxy; see also, the god-like Eternals. But there’s never been a superhero team-up like the Thunderbolts. In part because they’re not exactly heroes, consisting of grey-area allies at best (Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes), and borderline-villains at worst. But also because they’re not exactly ‘super’ either, with barely a special power between them. So, what happens when a motley crew of not-super not-heroes is tasked with saving the world?
The new issue of Empire goes on set of Marvel’s Thunderbolts* in search of answers, speaking to the starry cast – including Pugh, Stan, John-Kamen and Russell, plus David Harbour and Lewis Pullman – and director Jake Schreier about creating the unlikeliest team-up this side of the multiverse.

The release of The Monkey marks a continuation of Stephen King's long and weird film career. Directed by Osgood Perkins, the film reaches far back into King's past for material, now joining the ranks of other King adaptations like Carrie, The Running Man, and The Shining. However, as it turns out, Perkins isn't the first to bring this supposedly untouched short story to life. Kudos to you X-File fanatics who recall the episode “Chinga” in 1998, which used this same plot.
As part of a special series in Season 5, creator Chris Carter recruited some ringers to guest write. The result was an unofficial adaptation of King’s 1980 short story, “The Monkey,” swapping out the cymbal-clutching monkey for a creepy, haunted, Victorian Doll. Perhaps for legal reasons, the story was modified, concealing the origins. But enough of the core elements remain to trace the provenance of "Chinga." That short story is...

Famed horror author Stephen King has returned to X, formerly known as Twitter. The renowned writer was known for taking to the social media site to share his views about everything, from movies and books to current affairs and politics. After leaving the platform in November last year in the wake of the election and Elon Musk's takeover, the King has returned with two posts, one announcing his return, and another that's targeted at President Donald Trump, Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and controversial figure Elon Musk.
As reported by Variety, the author of books like Pet Sematary, Carrie, The Shining and It, has decided to jump back into the rocky territory that is X, the platform owned by Musk. We're just a short time away from the theatrical release of The Monkey, Osgood Perkins' follow-up to his 2024 hit Longlegs, and if that news isn't good enough for you, maybe its Rotten Tomatoes Score will be. Embargoes have lifted, the reviews are in, and at the time of this writing, the newest Stephen King adaptation sits at a healthy 86% on the website, which bodes well for its box office take this coming weekend.
Based on King's short story that was first published in 1980 and then collected into 1985's Skeleton Crew, The Monkey stars Theo James as twin brothers Hal and Bill Shelburn who, at a young age, stumble upon their father's vintage toy monkey in the attic, and witness a string of horrifying deaths all around them. Years later, the toy resurfaces, causing the siblings to reconcile and embark on a mission to permanently eliminate the cursed toy. "Osgood Perkins'...

Colman Domingo, the star of shows like Euphoria and films like The Color Purple and If Beale Street Could Talk, has shared that his role as Victor Strand in the spin-off in The Walking Dead universe,Fear the Walking Dead, changed his entire career.
His role in Fear the Walking Dead was not exactly his first performance on television. Domingo had been featured before in numerous Law & Order episodes, but afterward he mostly stayed on the stage playing several characters in theater adaptations of classics like A Christmas Carol, Henry V and The Taming of the Shrew. In 2015, all that would change.
Domingo was a guest on theHappy Sad Confused podcast, and he recalled being approached with the idea of starring in a TV show and his initial thoughts were, "I was a theater snob. I was like, 'Absolutely not.'" The actor claims that it took a little...

Since the publication of "Carrie" in 1974, Stephen King has knocked out over 60 novels/novellas and penned over 200 short stories. He has overcome severe substance abuse issues and survived one very gnarly car accident. He directed "Maximum Overdrive." He's hit dizzying peaks and deep, dark valleys, but, through it all, he has never lost his sense of wonder, nor his ability to enthrall readers the world over with his words.
King has been around long enough that he's seen several generations of filmmakers adapt his work. Old masters like Brian De Palma, George A. Romero, and Stanley Kubrick have passed the torch to the likes of Andy Muschietti, Mike Flanagan, and Edgar Wright (whose film adaptation of "The Running Man" is due out this November) — and it feels like subsequent generations will keep tending the flame so long as his work doesn't get banned out of existence. There is so much King out there,...

Osgood "Oz" Perkins, the director in charge of the upcoming Stephen King film The Monkey, has revealed some of his favorite works by the author behind titles like It, The Shining and Salem's Lot. Perkins is the latest Hollywood visionary to bring one of King's works to the big screen. Early reviews showed that The Monkey is a winner in the pantheon of King's horror adaptations.
Per Bloody Disgusting, the director behind films like Longlegs and The Blackcoat's Daughter said this about adapting a work by "one of the great American authors. I suppose the unique challenge in adapting a Stephen King story is parsing out 'Oh, it’s the greatest author of all time in the genre, one of the great American authors of all time,' and sort of letting that aspect not become daunting. James Gunn hasn't announced plans yet for The Flash in the DC Universe. However, that hasn't stopped fans from imagining certain actors in the role of the Scarlet Speedster, such as Twisters star Glen Powell.
Digital artist John Regan recently shared some artwork on Instagramimagining Powell as Barry Allen/The Flash, wearing a suit reminiscent of the one Grant Gustin wore during the later seasons of The CW's The Flash. After breaking out in 2022 with a supporting role in Top Gun: Maverick, Powell quickly became a favorite within the fan-casting community, with fans picturing him as everyone from DC superheroes Green Lantern and Batman to Marvel heavy hitters like Nova and Cyclops. However, the Barry Allen version of The Flash is possibly the superhero that fans want to see Powell play on the big screen the most, with fellow DC hero Booster Gold — who is confirmed to be getting his...

Stephen King is such an influential and irreplaceable literary force that even those who've never read his books still know of his name. This is thanks to the countless films and TV series based on his books. Much like King's own works, these adaptations varied greatly in terms of quality. Some went on to become pop culture legends, while others are fun guilty pleasures.
But regardless of their quality, not all these films and series can count as "good" adaptations due to how much they changed from King's original book. In fact, the only thing that some of these adaptations retained from King's novel was the title. It's no surprise that some of King's more devoted fans hated these controversial changes so much that they dismissed these films and series entirely.

Last year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, Lawrence has confirmed to the folks at Collider that post-production work on the film is almost complete, and he’s “super happy” with it.
An adaptation of The Long Walk has been trudging through development hell for decades. At one point, the rights were in the hands of Frank Darabont, who made the King adaptations The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, and The Mist. Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce have officially joined the cast of The Dog Stars, Ridley Scott’s next film for 20th Century Studios. They will star alongside Jacob Elordi, who was cast earlier this year after Paul Mescal stepped away due to scheduling conflicts. Filming is set to begin in Italy at the end of April.
Based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel, the movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic world after a deadly flu virus wipes out most of humanity. Elordi plays Hig, a pilot struggling to survive in this harsh new reality. He teams up with a hardened gunman, played by Brolin, as they navigate threats from roving scavengers. Along the way, Hig encounters Cima, a young doctor portrayed by Qualley, and her protective father, played by Pearce. The script was adapted by Mark L. Ridley Scott is pressing ahead with The Dog Stars, adding Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Guy Pearce to the cast.
During his press tour for Gladiator II, Ridley Scott revealed to Film Stories that a sci-fi project had been added to his upcoming slate, that was going to be a quick reunion with Paul Mescal. However, it would later emerge that Mescal had left the project because of his commitment to playing one of the Fab Four in Sam Mendes’ upcoming films based on The Beatles.
Still, the project is The Dog Stars, and it’s coming next from the bearded one.
Last month, Jacob Elordi would be announced as the new lead actor in The Dog Stars, and now we have a pretty good idea of the film’s supporting cast too. Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Guy Pearce are all (according to The Hollywood Reporter) in final negotiations to join the cast,...

Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin, Guy Pearce Join Jacob Elordi in Ridley Scott Thriller ‘The Dog Stars’
Ridley Scott’s forthcoming dystopian thriller The Dog Stars is continuing to cast up after previously landing Jacob Elordi as the lead.
Margaret Qualley, Josh Brolin and Guy Pearce are in final talks to star in the movie for 20th Century Studios. Mark L. Smith wrote the script, adapting Peter Heller’s 2012 apocalyptic novel of the same name.
The Dog Stars centers on a civilian pilot living on an abandoned airbase with his dog and an ex-Marine amid a devastating pandemic. A random transmission picked up by the pilot’s radio from his 1956 Cessna offers hope for a better life.
The Hollywood Reporter reported last month that Elordi was in early negotiations to replace Paul Mescal. Scott told the crowd at a Gladiator II screening in December that Mescal would likely drop out of reteaming with him in The Dog Stars due to the actor being busy with Sam Mendes’ four-film Beatles project.

Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises brought one of the greatest superhero trilogies of all-time (aptly titled The Dark Knight trilogy) to a close in 2012, with Christian Bale making one last appearance as Batman on the big screen facing down Tom Hardy's Bane. While it's not as beloved as The Dark Knight, which featured Heath Ledger's timeless performance as The Joker, The Dark Knight Rises was still an excellent movie. But, over the years, fans have pointed out one glaring flaw with the film that immediately pulls them out of the action, and it involves Marion Cotillard's Talia al Ghul.
During an interview with French outlet Les rencontres du Papotin, Cotillard admitted she messed up her dramatic death in The Dark Knight Rises. "I didn't nail that scene," the actress said. In The Dark Knight Rises' third act, Cotillard's Miranda revealed herself to be Talia Al Ghul,...

1990’s Total Recall was a game-changer in the film career of Arnold Schwarzenegger. After years of establishing himself with high-concept action programmers like Commando and The Running Man, Schwarzenegger proved with his role as Douglas Quaid he could handle an intelligent sci-fi thriller based on Philip K. Dick’s short story, “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale." It was not long before Carolco Pictures demanded a sequel, as director Paul Verhoeven and the writers had their sights on another Dick story: Minority Report.

Film and TV production in the U.K., whose boom came to a grinding halt in 2023 amid the Hollywood writers and actors strikes, rebounded in 2024 and is officially ahead of pre-Covid levels for the first time since the pandemic.

Stephen King is one of the most popular sci-fi and horror authors, but he usually writes standalone novels, although some of his works contain sneaky references to other writings. However, his book series The Dark Tower is different, as it's a rich, eight-book series filled with many adventures.
The series received a feature film adaptation in 2017, but it failed to impress. The film was critically panned and bombed at the box office, despite its impressive cast that featured Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. Luckily, frequent King collaborator Mike Flanagan is turning the series into a series on Prime Video, and King has just shared an encouraging update about The Dark Tower during an appearance on The Kingcast.

Stephen King has written about 65 books at this point, and by the time you finish reading this article, it'll probably be 66. Not all of them are winners, but he's batting at such a high average that it's hard to complain. The only problem is that it's a little intimidating for first-time readers to decide where to start with him. Do you go in chronological order, or should you go by whichever book's premise catches your eye the most? And what if your goal is to get as good an idea of King's whole schtick in as little time as possible? If you could only read five books to try to get the widest understanding of Stephen King, what should you pick?
That's a tough question, given King's stories hold a wide range of lengths, tones, and genres, but I'll be answering it anyway. Here's my curated list of five introductory Stephen King books,...

Exclusive: Colman Domingo is joining the cast of Gus Van Sant’s hostage thriller Dead Man’s Wire after completing his scenes for Edgar Wright’s The Running Man.
The title of Wright’s film is an apt for an actor who is doing the reverse of Phillip C. McGraw’s dictum that ‘it’s a marathon, not a sprint,’ by jetting from London on Monday to a devastated Los Angeles, then on to Kentucky next weekend to join Nosferatu’s Bill Skarsgard in Dead Man’s Wire in Louisville.
Austin Kolodney’s original screenplay for Dead Man’s Wire is based on the story of Tony Kirtsis, who one frigid day in February 1977 took Indianapolis mortgage broker Dick Hall hostage in his office. He attached a steel wire, that was hooked to the barrel of a sawed-off, double barrel shotgun, around his captive’s neck. Deadline revealed news of the production and the casting of Skarsgard,...

In addition to releasing some of the greatest movies of the past decade and a change, A24 is making history on January 17, 2025, by simultaneously releasing its “unforgettable” drama, Sing Sing, in theaters and prisons. Say what? You heard me. Director Greg Kwedar’s impactful film about a prison theater group returns to 500 theaters later this week and will be available to nearly a million incarcerated individuals across the United States.
Sing Sing follows Divine G, a man imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit. While there, he finds purpose by acting in a theater group alongside other incarcerated men for a story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art.
According to The Hollywood Reporter‘s exclusive report, the film’s historical re-release happens courtesy of A24, Rehabilitation Through the Arts (Rta), the real-life nonprofit organization on which the film is based, and Edovo. This...

Here it is, folks. At long last, the 650th episode (if you don't count all the other episodes) of the Empire Podcast, recorded live on Friday January 10th in front of a sell-out crowd at our spiritual home of Kings Place, London, is here! And like the cast list of a new Nolan movie, this one's got more stars than a sizeable constellation, with not one, not two, not three, but Four (!) brilliant filmy folk joining us on stage. First up, Chris sits down with Get Away writer/star, Nick Frost; then Beth chats with Babygirl star Harris Dickinson, who is now on his second live show appearance; thirdly, Alex Godfrey pops up to have a natter with William Tell star, Claes Bang (and we all get mildly distracted by his coat); and fourthly, Helen has a chinwag with Joe Alwyn, star of Brady Corbet's epic Oscars frontrunner The Brutalist.
