One of the most interesting tropes in the horror and thriller genres is the use of a cabin in the woods as the primary setting for the story, but it’s tough to tell which movie started this trend. The earliest example that I have is a Norwegian film from 1958 called Lake of the Dead. The house in Night of the Living Dead technically isn’t a cabin, but I think it qualifies. And then there are the certified classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, and Evil Dead that are responsible for popularizing this gimmick. Over the years, a lot of films have used the cliche simply as a throwback, but The Cabin in the Woods, Baghead, In A Violent Nature, and The Blackening have looked at it through a very meta lens. The Witcher season 4 doesn't have a release date yet, which is no surprise given how the show has recast its lead role with Liam Hemsworth. Geralt of Rivia's mentor will also look different, as Vesemir's actor also won't be returning due to scheduling conflicts. But according to Netflix, the rest of The Witcher's regular cast will be returning, barring those who died during the climactic end of season 3.

Two of the more bizarre found footage movies ever made, Creep and Creep 2, forced audiences to live in tense dramatic irony. At no point in either movie did Mark Duplass appear even marginally coherent, yet his victims numbered in the dozens. Taking a step back into the lore of “Peachfuzz,” Duplass returns to the role with a six-part TV series for Shudder – aptly titled The Creep Tapes. Across the episodes, Duplass gets to flex his acting chops, allowing his serial murderer to take even stranger swings. Horror fans will delight in the late-year show, while those outside the fandom may struggle to connect.

Over the first two Creep films, Duplass’ Peachfuzz serial killer alluded to having killed hundreds in his lifetime. At one point, we were granted a glimpse of the tapes, which appeared to reflect a rather accurate count.

Traditional horror movies with an easy-to-follow plot, relatable characters, and a healthy dose of scares are probably every horror fan’s comfort food. That’s because, when it comes to horror, the experimental and abstract genre pieces can be very hit or miss. In 2024 alone, I have come across In A Violent Nature, and I loved its take on the slasher subgenre. Bramayugam’s exploration of casteism and classism on a monochrome canvas was excellent. Recently, Mark Duplass announced the long-awaited threequel to the found footage series Creep, in which he plays a serial killer who tricks people into recording their own murders. Jay Duplass and Kelvin Yu are the latest additions to the cast of FX’s limited series adaptation of “Dying for Sex,” Variety has learned exclusively.

The series is based on the podcast of the same name. Duplass and Yu join previously announced series lead Michelle Williams and cast members Jenny Slate, Rob Delaney, David Rasche, and Esco Jouléy.

The official description of the series states “Molly (Williams), a woman diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, leaves her husband of 15 years and begins to explore her sexuality. She gets the courage and support to go on this adventure from her best friend (Slate), who stays by her side all the way to the very end.”

Duplass will play Steve, Molly’s husband. Yu will play Noah, described as “a talented musician with genuinely earnest, big feelings about his girlfriend Nikki that he isn’t shy about sharing.”

A cursory viewing of “Baghead,” another addition to the cinematic world of ghosts, might suggest such a premise to be the central focus of this unremarkable horror outing. Yes, that notion is undoubtedly part of the narrative, but just as much attention is placed on those who’ve been lost as those who are desperate to see those faces one more time. Either way, any focus the film places doesn’t go anywhere special.

Alberto Corredor's Baghead is the most recent example of "well, that would have been better as a short film." Mainly because, well, it is better as a short film. Corredor adapts the truncated version of Baghead written by Lorcan Reilly into the scattershot feature now on Shudder. New screenwriters Christina Pamies and Bryce McGuire struggle to extend the fifteen-minute original into an engaging hour and a half, especially during its bloated second act. Corredor crisply accentuates the mildewy and eerie atmosphere that saturates an outdated basement architecture, but by the end, falls victim to the usual follies that come with shorts-turned-features unable to sustain their big-screen treatments.

Alberto Corredor’s dour horror film Baghead, while sharing a name, not only has regrettably nothing to do with that prior film, but is utterly lacking in even the smallest sliver of genuine self-awareness. An expansion of his short of the same name, Baghead is written by Christina Pamies and Bryce McGuire, who can’t manage to give this story substantive scares. Instead, it feels like a film defined almost entirely by narrative padding.

Baghead is the latest offering of rules-based horror. As in, the characters follow specific rules and maybe they can survive their uncanny predicament. Alberto Corredor’s first long feature, an adaptation of his own short film of the same name, wastes no time establishing the system in which his characters must struggle. Admittedly, the high concept here is convoluted and also not executed to its fullest, but the film still manages to brew up some creepy moments as well as deliver an intriguing, not to mention fearsome antagonist.

Freya Allan (The Witcher) plays Iris, the struggling protagonist of Baghead. After losing her apartment, Iris inherits her estranged father’s (Peter Mullan) pub following his sudden passing. Soon enough, the young heir is offered a fat wad of cash by Jeremy Irvine’s desperate and frazzled character, Neil, in exchange for access to the pub’s basement and the “woman” living down there.

Review: I always get excited whenever Shudder is releasing a new film to their streaming service that I know next to nothing about. Add in a recognizable actor and I’m ready for whatever comes my way. So Baghead had me interested with its vague title and inclusion of Freya Allan (who I love in The Witcher). The trailer made it look like a creepy look at the living’s relationship with death. And the original short film was creepy as hell! Although SummerWeen and its fantastic lineup of slashers are still quite a while away, horror fans haven't exactly been stuck for something to watch this year. 2024 may have only just begun, but fans of all things spooky have been treated to a packed, fright-filled schedule thus far. With hotly-anticipated movies such as Night Swim, Baghead, and Lisa Frankenstein releasing on big screens worldwide over the past few months, it's fair to say we've been spoiled for choice.

So far, 2024 has been a rotten year for horror films. Both Night Swim and Baghead left a lot to be desired in the scares department, but there is hope yet.

Late Night With The Devil, which had its world premiere South by Southwest Film Festival in 2023 and screened at the BFI London Film Festival last year too, has picked up UK distribution with Vertigo Releasing.

Vertigo are releasing the David Dastamalchian -starring horror into cinemas in March.

Universal maintained a one-two at the UK-Ireland box office this weekend, as animation Migration held off Matthew Vaughn’s spy comedy Argylle.

Migration, from Minions creators Illumination, added £2.5m on its second session – a 31% drop. The film has £6.7m in total.

On its second weekend, Argylle dropped 43%, with £994,542 taking it to £3.7m – down on the usual level of Vaughn’s directorial output.

To celebrate the release of Baghead, the new horror film opening in UK cinemas this weekend, we had the pleasure of chatting with the film’s cast and filmmaker to find out more about this terrifying but thoughtful film that has more than just scares.

Following the death of her estranged father, Iris (Freya Allan) learns she has inherited a run-down, centuries-old pub and becomes inextricably tied to an unspeakable entity that resides in the pub’s basement – Baghead – a shape-shifting creature that can transform into the dead. Two thousand in cash for two minutes with the creature is all it takes for desperate loved ones to ease their grief. Neil (Jeremy Irvine), who has lost his wife, is Iris’ first customer. Like her father, Iris is tempted to exploit the creature’s powers and help desperate people for a price. But she soon discovers breaking the two-minute rule can have terrifying consequences.

Freya Allan clearly hasn’t gotten her fill of working on material that involves magic and monsters with her role on the Netflix series The Witcher, as she also has the lead role in the new horror film Baghead, which is set to reach theatres in the UK this Friday, January 26th. With that release date swiftly approaching, a short clip from Baghead has made its way online, and you can check it out in the embed above. Paramount’s “Mean Girls” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £3.2 million ($4.1 million), according to numbers from Comscore.

After a stellar reign at the top, Warner Bros.’ “Wonka” slid to second place with £1.6 million and after seven weekends, has a total of £58.3 million. In its second weekend, Disney’s “Poor Things” collected £1.09 million in third place for a total of £3.7 million. In fourth position, in its fourth weekend, Sony’s “Anyone But You” took in £1.07 million for a total of £7 million.

Rounding off the top five was Warner Bros.’ “One Life” that collected £858,245 in its third weekend for a total of £7.4 million.

There were two other debuts in the Top 10. Universal’s awards season contender “The Holdovers,” which has won two Golden Globes and scored five Oscar and seven BAFTA nominations, bowed with £689,771 in sixth place. Pathe Live’s “Queen Rock Montreal” concert film placed ninth with £285,110.

This year’s first new theatrical release for the horror genre was Universal, Blumhouse and producer James Wan’s Night Swim, which we’ve learned is headed home this week.

Night Swim is available to rent or own on Digital tomorrow, January 23.

Direcred by Bryce McGuire, Night Swim was released into theaters on January 5, 2024. To date, the film has managed to scare up $36 million at the worldwide box office.
