In a split ruling today, a state appeals court panel reinstated a grant of parole for former Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, overturning an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom to block her release.
Tuesday’s decision does not automatically mean Van Houten will be released. The state could still appeal the ruling to the California Supreme Court. Neither the governor’s office nor the state Attorney General’s Office immediately returned a message seeking comment.
Van Houten, now 73, is serving a potential life prison sentence for taking part in the killings of Leno and Rosemary Labianca in their Los Feliz home more than 50 years ago.
The Manson killings shook Los Angeles and defined a generation. The story of the Manson family has inspired countless shows and films, including, most recently, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Victoria Pedretti played a character called “Lulu” in the film,...

Matt Smith and Mary Harron's Charlie Says attempts to shift the focus of Charles Manson's mythology to the women he brainwashed.
Charles Manson is having a big year. Actually that moment occurred back in 1969, during a fateful summer he and his cult ended in mass murder. But with the grisly 50th anniversary upon us, we’re getting every sort of cinematic reworking from exploitative dreck like The Haunting of Sharon Tate to whatever the heck Quentin Tarantino is up to these days. Despite being a small, pathetic little monster desperate to act the big man, folks inexplicably can’t let Charlie go.
Charlie Says wisely avoids the cult of worship around Manson and even attempts to do the rare thing and change the often male gaze of the madman to a female one that’s studying the young women he brainwashed into murdering for him. The result attempts...

The film about the female members of Mansons clan directed by Susanna Lo chronicles the Helter Skelter attacks and centers on the girls rather than being a psychological tale about Manson himself.

Exclusive: As Charles Manson gears up for his behind-bars nuptials to a young follower named Star, a February shoot has been set for long-gestating indie drama Manson Girls. Susanna Lo is directing the film about the female devotees who joined Manson’s flock in the 1960s and helped carry out brutal killings meant to start an apocalyptic race war. Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects) will portray Manson in the film, which TriCoast Worldwide boarded this month at Afm.

When it comes to horror movies, the focus is usually on demons, ghosts, monsters, or slashers... but there's another kind of evil out there. One who's silently watching and listening... one with the ability to make people just disappear. One that reared its ugly head in 1971.
Not sure how Dread-worthy this will be, if at all, as thrillers can be sketchy, but we will report back if there's a need to.
From the Press Release
New York City actor Rich Graff, who recently starred alongside Heather Graham in the rom-com feature film directed by Anthony Edwards My Dead Boyfriend, is gearing up for the world premiere of the dark paranoia fueled thriller 1971, where he morphed himself into daring activist John Raines.

Does the lack of the word “Massacre” in the freshly truncated title of Texas Chainsaw 3D indicate that this sequel to Tobe Hooper’s classic 1974 horror film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre will find Leatherface settling his problems through the power of rhetoric? Apparently not, judging by the movie’s first trailer which features mechanical woodcutting device-related mayhem aplenty.

Although the actual crimes happened nearly 45 years ago, the Charles Manson murders continue to intrigue people to this day. Understanding that fact, filmmaker Susanna Lo is bringing us a film that looks at the insanity from a new angle. Prepare yourself for Manson Girls.
Based on the unimaginable events leading up to the 1969 murders performed by the Manson Family, Lo's Manson Girls tells a unique story from the perspective of the girls. "This is not Charles Manson's story. This is not Vincent Bugliosi's (Manson's prosecuting attorney who wrote Helter Skelter) story. This is the girls' story, and it predominately takes place in their earlier years from their high school days through when they start meeting each other and their life on Spahn Ranch, and it actually ends a minute before the actual Tate/Labianca murders," Manson Girls writer/director Susanna Lo said. Bill Moseley is one hell of a busy guy. In the last twelve months alone he's performed in The Devil's Carnival, the upcoming sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D, two episodes of FEARnet's popular network series "Holliston" and a handful of other genre films as well.

There are actors who are cast as the boy who gets the girl. And there are actors who are cast as the boy who gets to put the girl’s head on a spike. Bill Moseley is very much in the latter category. The actor first caught the eye of horror fans with his unforgettable turn as the berserk Chop Top in Tobe Hooper’s 1986 sequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and since then has gruesomely graced a raft of genre movies including 1990′s Night of the Living Dead remake, 1993′s Army of Darkness, and pretty much everything Rob Zombie has ever directed.

Grey’s Anatomy Lands Kristen Stewart’s Bandmate Stella Maeve
Stella Maeve is on her way to the ABC network set of Grey’s Anatomy. You may recognize this young actress. Not so long ago the California-born actress co-starred alongside Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn ladies Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning in that rock n’ roll biopic, The Runaways. You remember that one, don’t you?
Maeve is gearing up to portray Lily, a young woman who visits Seattle Grace Hospital because a few of her family members have endured a very serious car crash. Lily was in the vehicle also, but survives with little damage, though her family’s welfare is far more critical. Lily will appear in a two-episode arc. In fact, you’ll find her starring in Episodes 9 and 10 of this current season. THR had the scoop.
Maeve was Sandy West, the band’s drummer in The Runaways film.

Manning Gunning For Oscars Gold With Manson Project
Actress Taryn Manning is aiming for Oscar gold with her upcoming Charles Manson movie, insisting the lead role is worthy of an Academy Award.
The Crossroads star is preparing to star in Manson Girls, a film focusing on the lives of the convicted murderer's female followers, and she has been given the unique opportunity of choosing between two key parts - serial killer Susan 'Sadie' Atkins and longtime cult member Sandra 'Blue' Good.
Manning admits she's torn between the roles because they're both challenging - but only one is truly Oscar worthy.
She tells WENN, "We haven't filmed it but I'm signed on. I can choose between two roles right now. One of them is Sadie Atkins which is the obvious part because of typecasting. I'm much more sophisticated than I get credit for and I'm much more well read and educated.
"But I've also had the opportunity to play Sandra 'Blue' Good who is still alive and she still follows Manson and she's crazy. She was the most educated of all the women that fell into this cult and she was never part of any of the murders and was pregnant during the early days of the family. She's not a part I would normally get to play but if I want to win an Oscar, which is my intention, I want the part that will stand out and that's Sadie Atkins."
And Manning is determined to draw the attention of Academy voters, with whichever role she chooses, after being snubbed in 2005.
She says, "I feel like I should have been nominated for Hustle & Flow to be honest and a lot of people feel that way, but that's fine and it wasn't my time... I'm one part away from winning an Oscar, if it's the right part, and that could be playing Sadie Atkins."
But there's one aspect of the Manson Girls project she's a little apprehensive about: "There are people who don't like her (Atkins) and what she really did in real life and I don't know if I want to sign up for that potential abuse that could come my way from people that are horrified from the murders she committed of innocent people. So I'm torn between what part do I play. It's a good problem to have!"
Manson is serving a life prison sentence after co-ordinating a killing spree in the late 1960s as the leader of the Manson Family.

Just when you thought things couldn't get any stranger in Haven, the police chief crumbles to pieces (quite literally) and a mystery woman shows up claiming to be the 'real' Audrey Parker (Emily Rose). So, yeah. Season 1 of the popular sci-fi show ended on a rather mysterious note.
Season 2 of 'Haven' premieres this week, and the first episode raises more questions than it answers. The 'other' Audrey is still around, Nathan (Lucas Bryant) is grieving for his dead father, and Duke (Eric Balfour) has to deal with a mystery woman from his past who blows into town out of nowhere.

We're not kidding. Ron Jeremy. And he plays a pornographer.
We're following director Susanna Lo's film Manson Girls, which focuses on Charles Manson's follower Sandra Good, who is played by the talented Thora Birch, quite closely, and the director informs us that two new cast members, the beloved Priscilla Barnes and the crazy Ron Jeremy, are both playing dramatic roles in the biopic.
Priscilla Barnes, who horror film fans will recognize from Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects is "Mrs. Atkins", follower Sadie Atkin's mom (did we forget to mention that talented Heather Matarazzo will be playing Sadie Atkins?) and former porn actor Ron Jeremy will be doing a cameo as Van Guylder, the director of the porn film The Ramrodder which two Manson followers, Catherine Share (aka "Gypsy") and Bobby Beausoleil, starred in together.

In 1969, a cult of brainwashed hippies killed eight people in a seemingly random, unprovoked two-night spree. Charles Manson is normally the boogeyman attached to the Tate-labianca murders, but Manson didn't even set foot in either crime scene. He sent his "family" to do the dirty work for him. The Manson Family legend is one of the scariest and most fascinating in true crime, yet the focus frequently is on Manson himself. Writer/director Susanna Lo is set to change that with her film, Manson Girls, which will tell the stories of followers such as Sadie Atkins, "Squeaky" Fromme, Linda Kasbian, and Patricia Krenwinkel. We chatted with Tania Raymonde (Death Valley, Lost) about her role...

Shock spent part of the afternoon today hanging around on the set of MTV's upcoming new horror-comedy series Death Valley where Tania Raymonde ( Lost ) was wrapping her final day shooting. Up next for the actress: Susanna Lo's Manson Girls . "I've been doing a lot of research for that, reading and watching all of the films," she told us. Part of her film consumption included Jim Van Bebber's The Manson Family and a number of documentaries. Raymonde knows her stuff, recalling for us how long it took Van Bebber to get his film made. " Manson Girls is different and really focuses on the women who were, pretty much, brainwashed by this guy. You barely see Charles Manson in this, it's all about the girls and the film is all about the weeks leading up to the...

Taryn Manning has come a long way from life in Charming. After starring as Half-Sack’s girlfriend Rita in Sons of Anarchy Season 1, Manning went on to be a series guest-star on Hawaii Five-0 as Mary Ann McGarrett.
Now, Manning is scheduled to make major moves in 2011, starting with the cover of Playboy Magazine. Just one month after Samcro’s Winter Ave Zoli took over the cover of Playboy, Manning gets her own cover shoot with a decidedly more rock ‘n roll look with a touch of metal lace.
Playboy won’t be Manning’s only stop after reprising her role on Soa during the Season 3 Belfast journey. Manning has six movies scheduled for 2011 release: 513, The Speed of Thought, Man Without a Head, Five Good Years, Manson Girls and The Story of Bonnie and Clyde.
Check out the cover below. How do you think Manning stacks up against her Samcro counterpart Zoli?...

Anyone who knows what a Masters of Horror dinner is also knows that Mick Garris is probably cringing as he reads this sentence, because I've been somewhat of a thorn in his side regarding how many women attend them.
I've actually had Joe Lynch yell at me (virtually, anyway) and James Gunn chastise me publicly for saying that women don't get invited to the Masters of Horror dinners.
But I'm not bitching about that today, so Mick and James and Joe can relax. This is not a critique of them and their invitational habits. What I'm bitching about is how few women horror directors are actually available for them to invite.
What Is a Masters of Horror dinner, you ask, layperson?

Adjust your calendars accordingly: Ridley Scott’s Prometheus — starring Noomi Rapace — has been moved from March 9, 2012 to June 8, 2012. [THR]
More on Scott: Ridley and Tony Scott will produce The Drivers, a drama set in the 1960s surrounding the 24 Hours of Le Mans, a day-long car race. That’s a lot of Cheetos.
Mark Ivanir has replaced Jeremy Northam in A Late Quartet — also starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, and Christopher Walken — which follows a string quartet celebrating their 25th anniversary who fight to stay together. All they need is more cowbell. Too overused? Then how about we celebrate their 25 with a passport to Florida?...

Park City — Our Monday started off on a weird note, even for the “anything-can-happen-at-Sundance” vibe. There is a new movie coming called “Manson Girls.” Directed by Susanna Lo, the drama is about several of the women who followed murderer Charles Manson. Included in the cast is Monica Keena, who plays Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme, Laura Harring (Alice Rainer), Heather Matarazzo (Sadie Atkins), Jennifer Landon (Mary Brunner), Tania Ramonde (Leslie Van Houten) and Taryn Manning (we don’t whom she plays). It turns out that two members of the Doobie Bros., John McFee and Guy Allison, wrote the theme to the movie, so...

On January 8, 2011, this writer took a trip up La Tuna Canyon just outside Sun Valley, CA, for a visit to Frank Ippolito’s then-shooting short film "Night of the Little Dead" (set visit and photos coming soon) and while there chatted with one of that film’s stars, genre vet Bill Moseley, who talked up a few of his other horror projects, including Susanna Lo’s upcoming feature Manson Girls.
“I’m really looking forward to it,” said the actor, who is familiar to horror fans for his turn as ‘Choptop’ in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 as well as for his portrayal of ‘Otis’ in the Rob Zombie films House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects, of his role in Manson Girls. “It is kind of funny to have these brushes with Charles Manson over the years. Is anyone surprised by this news? I mean, really? After Moseley’s turn in “The Devil’s Rejects”, it’s not overwhelmingly surprising that the genre vet would be tapped to play Charles Manson in Susanna Lo’s upcoming shocker “Manson Girls”. The film, which also stars Heather Matarazzo, Michael Monks, Laura Harring, Patti D’Arbanville, Estella Warren, Monica Keena, Stella Maeve, Eric Balfour, and Chad Faust, chronicles the adventures of a rich girl who finds herself mixed up in Manson’s zany shenanigans. Beyond that, details are extremely limited, though I strongly suspect that more information will come to light as the production progress. Although the subject matter is more than a little tired — feel free to count how many Manson-oriented films are collecting dust at your local neighborhood video store — the casting of Moseley as the notorious serial killer certainly gives this flick some much-needed intrigue. “Manson Girls...

The Devil’s favorite reject, Bill Moseley has been cast to play everyone’s favorite cult-leader Charles Manson in "Manson Girls," written and directed by Susanna Lo. Driftwood in Rob Zombie’s House of 1000 Corpses & The Devils Rejects was spectacular, so it’s no surprise that he was chosen to portray Manson. Back in March of 2008, Entertainment Tonight reported that Lindsay Lohan signed on to play Nancy Pitman, one of Charles Manson's devoted followers in "Manson Girls." It is the lead role, but Lohan is no longer attached. Bloody-Disgusting is now reporting that Bill Moseley (The Devil's Rejects) has been cast as Charles Manson in the film. He'll be joined by Eric Balfour (Skyline), Tania Raymonde ("Lost"), Brit Morgan ("True Blood"), and Estella Warren (Planet of the Apes). The new movie follows Nancy Pitman, a young girl from a wealthy Malibu family who fell under Manson's spell. She was not one of the "Family" members involved in the clan's infamous murder spree, but Pitman was later imprisoned after she became involved with the Aryan Brotherhood and was convicted of being an accessory (after the fact) to murder. "Manson Girls" will begin filming in March in Los Angeles.
