Years after completing the documentary, Abandoned (2017), Philip Brubaker decided the film did not go far enough into the spiritual direction that he intended. He chose to re-edit that film by treating it as found footage and transforming the story with clips from famous films, an influence Brubaker attributes to his time experience as a video essayist. The result is Abandoned Movie (2019).
