Twenty-eight actors and reality hosts from diverse backgrounds were recognized by the Television Academy with Emmy nominations on Tuesday, not only an 18% drop from last year’s 34 but a near-low since 2019, when there were 26 non-Caucasian actors and hosts.

At its highest, the most diverse year for actors and reality competition/talk show hosts was 2021 per Deadline stats with a massive 49 nominees.

While there were only two categories last year devoid of nominees from diverse backgrounds, this year there were three.

Hulu's new political thriller, Paradise, is an instant hit, debuting at number one on the streamer's Top 10 chart. The show stars Sterling K. CNN launched a new free, ad-supported streaming channel on Wednesday that features content from the network’s original series library.

Audiences in the U.S. and internationally will have Fast channel access to CNN original programming starting on Wednesday. The channel will include a variety of original series programming, combined into a linear stream.

The CNN Originals included at launch are “Amanpour: Sex and Love Around the World,” “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,” “Chasing Life with Dr. Sanjay Gupta,” “Diana,” “Lincoln: Divided We Stand,” “Soundtracks: Songs That Defined History,” “This is Life with Lisa Ling,” “The Wonder List with Bill Weir,” “United Shades of America with W. The service will significantly expand the availability of the programming, which is currently only available on the Max streaming platform.

Hulu has handed out a straight-to-series order for the untitled drama that will star three-time Emmy winner Brown and is created by Fogelman.

Hulu declined to comment on the premise of the series though sources say it may revolve around a security guard to a former president. Fogelman quietly took his spec script to senior-level executives at 20th Television — where he has been based with a rich overall deal — and Hulu and landed the series order. Brown was quickly attached to star and exec produce.

“This Is Us” alums Sterling K. Brown and Dan Fogelman are reuniting for a drama that has been ordered to series at Hulu, Variety has learned.

Hulu is not commenting on exact plot details of the untitled series, but sources describe the show as a thriller and say Brown would star as the head of security for a former president.

In addition to writing, Fogelman will executive produce via Rhode Island Ave. Productions along with Jess Rosenthal. Brown will executive produce in addition to starring, with John Hoberg also executive producing. 20th Television is the studio, with Fogelman currently under an overall deal there.

Searchlight Pictures has snapped up E. Nicholas Mariani’s 2018 Black List script The Defender, which George Tillman Jr. will direct with three-time Emmy-winning actor Sterling K. Brown to star as heroic lawyer Scipio Africanus Jones.

Jones was a courageous attorney who risked his life and career to defend 87 men wrongfully accused of murder in the wake of the Elaine, Ar massacre of 1919, when a group of Black sharecroppers meeting in a church about unionization were attacked by a posse organized by white landowners.

Brown will produce with 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen. Mariani and Danielle Reardon will executive produce with Dantram Nguyen, Katie Goodson-Thomas and Richard Ruiz overseeing for Searchlight. Ben Wilkinson, VP Business Affairs and Legal Counsel, negotiated the deal for Searchlight along with WME and CAA on behalf of filmmakers.

Tillman Jr. produced and directed the movie The Hate U Give for Fox 2000 Pictures, based on Angela Thomas’ novel.

Searchlight Pictures has acquired script rights to “The Defender,” starring Sterling K. Brown as the pioneering lawyer Scipio Africanus Jones, who risked his life and career to defend the Elaine Twelve — a group of 12 Black sharecroppers sentenced to death for allegedly being involved in the murder of a white man during the Elaine Massacre of 1919 in Arkansas.

“Secrets of the Whales,” the Disney+ docuseries that offers a deep dive on whale cultures, won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series on Sunday afternoon.

The documentary series, which was filmed in two dozen locations over three years, premiered on Disney+ in April 2021. Disney’s description for the show reads:

“‘Secrets of the Whales’ plunges viewers deep within the epicenter of whale culture to experience the extraordinary communication skills and intricate social structures of five different whale species: Orcas, humpbacks, belugas, narwhals, and sperm whales. Throughout this epic journey, we learn that whales are far more complex and more like us than ever imagined.

The mysterious movie marks Eslyn’s feature directorial debut. Production on “Biosphere” — written by Eslyn and Duplass — has wrapped, with details of the project’s plot being kept secret.

Exclusive: Former Disney+ exec Chanel Pysnik has joined Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Archewell Productions as Head of Unscripted. Reporting to Ben Browning, Archewell’s Head of Content, Pysnik will oversee nonfiction series and documentary film productions, working closely with Netflix, where the company is under a deal. Pysnik, who started in May, joins a growing production team at Archewell, which also includes Bennett Levine, who joined the company as Coordinator in the spring.

Diversity showed up strong at the Primetime Emmy Nominations this morning with a record 49 non-Anglo nominees recognized in the acting and reality hosting categories, +17% over last year’s diversity record of 42 nominees.

Of this morning’s 49 nominees, 43 were actors in the drama series, limited, comedy, supporting and guest categories — the biggest number we’ve ever seen to date besting 2020 and 2018’s actor diversity record which tied at 36 nominations. Similar to last year, six nominees in the reality/competition hosting category were of color.

Thompson’s are highly unusual, with both in the full-time regular series categories for lead and supporting comedy. He received a Lead Actor in a Comedy Series nom Tuesday for his portrayal of Kenan Williams in his eponymous NBC comedy series. He also earned a Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series nom for Saturday Night Live. These are not Thompson’s first Emmy noms, however. He previously received an Emmy nomination in 2018 for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for Saturday Night Live for the song “Come Back, Barack” from an episode hosted by Chance the Rapper.

Multiple Emmy winner Jean Smart is experiencing her first time as double nominee in the acting categories. Smart received a nomination for her leading role of legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s hit comedy Hacks.

During the nomination announcements for the 72nd annual Emmy Awards, several performers earned their first nomination ever (44 to be exact). Exclusive: Glass Entertainment Group, the production company behind CNN series Lincoln: Divided We Stand, is ramping up its podcast activity.

The company has partnered with Amazon-owned podcast company Wondery on a slate of shows and has promoted a pair of executives to oversee its growing audio division.

Through the deal with Wondery, the company behind series Dr. Death and The Shrink Next Door, it is launching true-crime series Bodies in the Ballroom and expanding its Confronting anthology.

Bodies in the Ballroom, which will launch this summer, will explore the 1971 murders in Westfield, NJ, the site of one of the most mysterious family slayings. In an upper-class home, investigators discovered five brutally murdered bodies meticulously organized in the ballroom. A grandmother, mother and three children were counted among the deceased, but the father, John List, was missing and became the prime suspect, eluding justice for nearly 18 years.

Lincoln: Divided We Stand is a six-part docuseries, narrated by This Is Us star Sterling K. Brown, that takes a look at the story of the 16th President of the United States.

The hope, according to exec producer Nancy Glass, who runs Glass Entertainment, that it is a deep dive into the history of the man who led the United States through the Civil War.

“Lincoln’s life is often reduced to many generalizations: He was tall; he wore a hat; he freed the slaves; he was assassinated. In fact, he was a man of many facets. He was funny and a concerned father. He was a brilliant political strategist and orator. During the course of this docuseries, viewers will learn about his very layered life,” she told Deadline.
