Aloha, Emma Stone's Worst Movie, Is Trending on Netflix
Image
Not every filmography is full of winners, and that even applies to Academy Award-winner Emma Stone. In 2015, before her Best Actress wins for 2016's La La Land and 2023's Poor Things, Stone starred in Cameron Crowe's Aloha. Stone plays an Air Force pilot named Allison Ng, a character infatuated with space and a surprising love interest for Bradley Cooper's Brian Gilcrest. Aloha recently landed on Netflix, where it's quickly rising through the top movie charts as people are tuning in to discover or perhaps re-discover Crowe's controversial dramedy.

Aloha PG-13 Director Cameron CroweCast Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBrideMain Genre Comedy

Aloha has a 20% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, and it doesn't fare much better among audiences as that number only rises to 29%. That puts it just above 2010's Marmaduke and 2013's Movie 43 films with a 9% and 5% rating from critics, respectively...

Matt Stone and Trey Parker in South Park (1997)
‘Strays’ Review: Crude Dog Comedy Is a Clever Laugh Riot Made for Pet Lovers
Matt Stone and Trey Parker in South Park (1997)
It’s been said, probably, that every movie would be even better with wiener jokes. I don’t think this was said by very mature individuals, nor do I think they were sober when they said it, but I’m pretty sure it’s been said at least once or twice. Probably by college students binge-watching “South Park” and huffing Cheeto dust.

In any case, those amateur philosophers are probably the target audience for “Strays,” a talking animal movie in the illustrious vein of “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” and the Owen Wilson version of “Marmaduke.” But although the majority of films where live-action animals talk with the assistance of flappy-mouthed CGI are made for children — who theoretically are enchanted by such things — “Strays” is full of profanity, jokes about sex and violence, and pervasive themes about abusive relationships.

And while it’s easy to imagine a cranky old critic waving his cane around,...

Strays Review: A Glorious Gross-Out Comedy That Barks Up The Right Tree
Image
After years of doubting the viability of cinema releases, "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" have effectively put those fears to rest ... at least for a while. After one big blockbuster after another, August seems surprisingly light, with major players seemingly afraid to try and compete with the Barbenheimer craze. With the undeniable success of "Oppenheimer," Universal Pictures are seeking to continue its run with a film that is the polar opposite of the Cillian Murphy-led biopic: a talking dog movie.

The mere phrase "talking dog movie" is enough elicit groans. While talking-animal movies are prominent in animation, the live-action counterparts tend to be various levels of unbearable -- consider "Marmaduke," "Think Like A Dog," or the "Cats & Dogs" franchise. But "Strays" seeks to buck the trend of disastrous talking-dog movies, and it's got some surprising pedigree behind it. Directed by Josh Greenbaum (who also helmed the vastly underappreciated "Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar...

Fast X Features A Cameo That No One Will Expect
Image
Louis Leterrier's new film "Fast X," the eleventh film in the "Fast and Furious" saga, may not have been spoiled yet for you, dear reader. Although you may have heard that the film features at least one -- possibly more -- cameo from known "Furious" characters, there's actually an appearance from someone you likely aren't expecting at all.

Yes, this is a post about a one-off comedian cameo that will likely stay safely within the walls of the film in which he appears. A star of "Bodies Bodies Bodies" and "Saturday Night Live" makes a brief appearance in one scene of "Fast X" as a drug-adjacent, fast-talking varlet that some of our heroes encounter. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Pete Davidson.

Davidson's character is a former associate of Ramsey (Mathalie Emmanuel), the stalwart computer hacker. Because of a massive disaster at the head of the film, Ramsey,...

Owen Wilson’s Rotten Tomatoes Is Shockingly Bad (& His New Movie Makes It Worse)
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Paint.Though he's appeared in popular movies like Wedding Crashers and Shanghai Noon, Owen Wilson has a shockingly bad Rotten Tomatoes score, and his new movie Paint has only dragged down his average. Once a darling of the early '00s, Wilson was often called upon to play laid-back, laissez-faire types in movies like You, Me, and Dupree and Zoolander, often partnering up with other comedic actors like Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, and Ben Stiller to balance their chaotic energy. In the '10s movies like Hall Pass, Marmaduke, and Drillbit Taylor made audiences wary of a persona that, after repeated exposure, had worn out its welcome.

In Paint, Wilson plays a Bob Ross-esque public access host who shows viewers all over Vermont how to paint nature scenes, encouraging them to explore their wildest artistic endeavors even if they don't have much in the way of talent.

Every Emma Stone Movie Ranked
Image
Throughout her storied career, Emma Stone has starred in a wide variety of movies, from raunchy teen comedies to Oscar-winning dramatic masterpieces. Some of Stone’s movies have been universally praised by critics, like Birdman and The Favourite, while others have been panned as one of the worst, like Marmaduke and Movie 43 – and there are plenty of middling efforts that rank somewhere in between. With challenging roles like a woman in recovery, an aspiring starlet, and a conniving courtier, Stone has earned a cabinet’s worth of awards, including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe Award.

In 2017, Stone was included on Time magazine’s annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world. Movie stars have to leave a huge impression on audiences to make this list. Stone is one of the few actors who can seamlessly transition between zany comedic roles and complex dramatic roles,...

Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
New on Netflix: May 2022 Releases
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
As the undisputed king of streaming (for now at least), Netflix has enjoyed the presence of some major blockbusters. Now, with its list of new releases for May 2022, Netflix is bringing back one of its biggest ever hits.

Stranger Things season 4 “volume one” is set to premiere on May 27. It’s been a long wait for new episodes of this ’80s-tinged sci-fi/horror series and based on the trailers, the wait will have been well worth it. In this go-around, the kids of Hawkins (now high schoolers) will have to contend with the Upside Down once again to go along with the horrors of the Creel House.

While Stranger Things is the biggest Netflix original this month, it’s far from the only one. Mike Myers’ latest series The Pentaverate premieres on May 5 (fittingly: 5/5). Meanwhile The Lincoln Lawyer is set to arrive on May 13 followed by Love, Death & Robots Volume...

Marmaduke (2010)
Marmaduke Trailer: Pete Davidson Is Great, And Also, A Dane
Marmaduke (2010)
In a move that feels like a Mandela Effect-type fever dream in the making, Netflix is releasing an animated "Marmaduke" movie featuring the voices of Pete Davidson and J.K. Simmons. The movie follows that big goofy dog from the classic comic strip, only now the Great Dane (and his owners) all have a stick-thin, funkily computer animated look to them.

The first "Marmaduke" movie since 2010's poorly received live-action version, the Netflix version doesn't particularly look like it's aiming to bring the once-beloved property back...

Marmaduke (2010)
First Trailer for Amusing Animated 'Marmaduke' Movie from Netflix
Marmaduke (2010)
"Some dogs aren't meant to be 'champions'. Some dogs are meant to be... dogs." Netflix has revealed the first trailer for a new 3D CGI animated Marmaduke movie, streaming on Netflix this summer. They already made a live-action Marmaduke movie in 2010 with Owen Wilson as the voice, but this looks even more ridiculous. This new movie is part of a re-launch of the Marmaduke brand, with more films, TV series, and merch planned. Messy and mischievous Marmaduke has a big heart but can't stay out of trouble! Does he have what it takes to shine in the swanky dog show world? A legendary dog trainer believes he can help Marmaduke become the first Great Dane in history to win the Westminster Champion's trophy. The movie is based on the newspaper comic strip that ran between 1954 and now based on a family and their Great Dane called Marmaduke. It was created...

Ben Whishaw in Paddington (2014)
‘Tom & Jerry’ Film Review: Grating Cat-and-Mouse Comedy Puts the ‘Ow’ in ‘Meow’
Ben Whishaw in Paddington (2014)
For every “Paddington” or “21 Jump Street” that turns existing intellectual property into delightful entertainment, there are dozens of failed attempts, like “Chips” or “Marmaduke” or “Baywatch.” Joining that latter list of disappointments is “Tom & Jerry,” a frustratingly unfunny attempt to revive the “Itchy and Scratchy”-inspiring cat and mouse as a live-action-animation hybrid.

If there’s a way of taking those classic slapstick shorts and making their feline-vs.-rodent mayhem appealing over the course of a feature film, director Tim Story (2019’s dreadful “Shaft”) and screenwriter Kevin Costello (“Brigsby Bear”) haven’t cracked the code.

“Tom & Jerry” isn’t an origin story, or an updating, or a revival, or even an ironic commentary. It’s not really much of anything, except an unreal melding of 2-D animated characters and real people in what’s supposed to be modern-day New York City.

Saturday Night Live (1975)
For “Saturday Night Live” fans who tuned in to the show’s 45th season premiere last night, there was one lingering question after the cameras turned off: where was Pete Davidson?

Davidson had taken a leave of absence from “SNL” last season after posting a troubling Instagram post in which he confessed that he didn’t “want to be on this earth anymore.” Fortunately, Davidson was missing last night for a much better reason: he was in Atlanta working with James Gunn on the upcoming sequel to “Suicide Squad.”

T.J. Miller & Damon Wayans, Jr. Talk Big Hero 6
Big Hero 6: A Marriage of Convenience. Somehow this was the conclusion arrived at by the end of my interview with T.J. Miller & Damon Wayans, Jr. It was late in the day and the two were justifiably tired and a little loopy from a long day of doing interviews for the Disney feature. So a simple question on injecting their own comedic personas into their animated characters turned into a fairly epic nonsensical rant by Miller on how starring in a Disney film is akin to a marriage and, well, it’s best to just watch and see Miller go off. The gregarious comic has a real knack for mixing absurdity with a deeply acerbic sense of wit. Damon Wayans, Jr’s bemused nonchalance at Miller’s monologue is the cherry on top. It’s also a fair representation of their characters’ interactions within Big Hero 6. Miller as...

Benjamin Bratt Replaces Al Pacino who Replaced Javier Bardem in Despicable Me 2
Update: Okay, this is just weird. Benjamin Bratt (he plays Manny's dad/Gloria's ex in "Modern Family") will voice the villain in Despicable Me 2, replacing Al Pacino (Jack and Jill) who replaced Javier Bardem. Pacino left over "creative differences" which is always what studios say whenever it doesn't work out with an actor. It most likely means that Illumination and Al Pacino couldn't agree on how much they'd pay him versus how much he wanted, but that's just an educated guess. In the meantime, Bratt steps into the voice over booth to do some fast work ... Despicable Me 2 opens July 2. Benjamin Bratt has Vo experience, he is the voice of Manny in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

May 2, 2012 - Steve Coogan, best known to kids as Owen Wilson's mini-nemesis Octavius in Night at the Museum, will join the voice cast of Despicable Me 2 in an unknown role.

Judy Greer's Husband is Very Happy That She's Starring in Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes
Update: Judy Greer (Marmaduke) will play an ape in Dawn of the Plenet of the Apes. Greer will play Cornelia, a potential love interest for Caesar, so apparently she'll be donning the motion capture dots for the CGI. Apparently, Greer's husband is a Planet of the Apes fanatic down to having bride and groom chimps topping their wedding cake. When Greer ran into her former 13 Going on 30 costar Andy Serkis, who plays Caesar, she told him about how her husband was bonkers for the movie franchise. One thing led to another and it looks like Greer's hubby's deepest wishes are coming true - his wife will be an ape!Source: Vulture

Feb. 23, 2013 - Kodi Smit-McPhee, the 16-year old actor who voiced Norman in ParaNorman, will star alongside Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, the upcoming The Great Gastsby) in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The movie takes place 15 years...

Judy Greer: 'I get flashed all the time'
Quirky and upfront, the actor isn't your typical Hollywood veteran. She tells Hermione Hoby about her latest film, Playing For Keeps, her Broadway debut, and the variety of ways Arrested Development fans show their appreciation

Judy Greer has made around 80 movies over almost 15 years in Hollywood. But she appears to be oblivious to the protocol of the actor interview. She comes into the restaurant, makes the "there you are" hands gesture, as if we're old friends finally managing to meet up for lunch, and launches straight into confessional mode: "Oh my God: I totally just had like a 10-minute conversation with someone and I've got no idea who they were."

She also says "fuck" a lot, which strikes an odd note in this place – a muzak-oozing timewarp of a midtown Manhattan restaurant, all obsequious waiters and swaths of peach linen. Halfway through an answer she breaks off to frown at...

Archer Season 3 Episode 7 Review: Maybe Baby Daddy And Son
Beware of the evil temptress that is Pam (Amber Nash) because she is such a great lay that you will forget about all of your responsibilities. But then again, we’re talking about Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) here.

Who knew a night of Green Russians and strip clubs–the only way to grieve–after a co-worker’s wake–would lead to a hot, steamy sex, which Archer claims to be the best he’s ever had? Considering the conquests he’s had over the years, including Lana (Aisha Tyler), that was a bold statement; so when he opened his door to find Pam sitting on the toilet making bread, well that’s the kind of horrifying reveal that lets you know this was going to be a memorable episode.

The hook-ups on Archer rarely ever surprise (at this point), but this is one of those rare times when it shocked you at first,...

Casting Bits: Shia Labeouf Back in ‘Charlie Countryman’, Bill Hader, Josh Gad and Kate Hudson to Voice ‘Me & My Shadow’
Kate Hudson
[1] In April 2010, Shia Labeouf was set [2] to team up with commercial director Dante Ariola for The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman. However, scheduling issues got in the way and in March 2011, Zac Efron and a different commercial director, Fredrik Bond, stepped in [3] to take their place. Now things have shifted around yet again, as Efron exits, Labeouf re-enters, and Bond remains at the helm. Labeouf is best known for his leading role in the blockbuster Transformers franchise, but he'll be going somewhat smaller in his upcoming projects. His next appearances will be opposite Tom Hardy in John Hillcoat's The Wettest County this August, and opposite Anna Kendrick and Nick Nolte in Robert Redford's The Company You Keep. With Labeouf's re-invovlement pushing Charlie Countryman into pre-production, it's scheduled for a May start in Eastern Europe. Matt Drake's pulp romance, which landed on the 2007 Black List, centers an American...

Archer: The Complete Second Season Blu-ray and DVD Arrive December 27th
H. Jon Benjamin in Archer (2009)
Sterling Archer, the world's most dangerous spy, and his snarky Isis cohorts are back for another outrageously raunchy season when Archer: The Complete Second Season comes to Blu-ray and DVD on December 27th from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment.

Loaded with three exclusive top-secret animated shorts, Archer: The Complete Second Season features all 13 episodes plus hilarious never-before-seen extras!

When he's not busy foiling eco-terrorist threats, tracking down mysterious killers, or having sex in x-ray machines, the suave master-spy has his hands full with bikini-clad ninjas, Swiss nymphomaniacs, and paternity suits. Archer searches for the true identity of his father, battles breast cancer, and brings a sexy, ex-kgb agent home to meet his domineering mother. It's all in a day's work for the international man of mystery in this uproariously edgy animated farce.

Archer features the voice talents of H. Jon Benjamin (Bob's Burgers, Family Guy), Jessica Walter (Arrested Development...

DVD Review: The Smurfs
The Smurfs

Stars: Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria, Sofía Vergara, Katy Perry (Voice), Alan Cumming (Voice), George Lopez (Voice), Paul Reubens (Voice), Anton Yelchin (Voice), Jonathan WInters (Voice) | Written by J. David Stem | Directed by Raja Gosnell

When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours — in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs team up with married couple Grace and Patrick Winslow (Mays and Harris) to find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel (Azaria) tracks them down.

The Smurfs finally make it big (pardon the pun) in a new live-action movie that upon its release was abhorred by film critics yet saw joe public flock to cinemas giving it a worldwide box office of $561m – which is not bad for...

The Big Year Movie Review
The Big Year is the sort of vehicle that will cause critics and audiences alike equal difficulty in discerning why and how it ever got made in the first place (which is not necessarily a bad thing). An indie film in all but budget, stars, and well... 20th Century Fox, it's a slow, meandering "comedy" that isn't exactly funny, and doesn't offer much insight when it comes to what it thinks you ought to be getting out of it. At least, not until the very end, when it didn't need to say anything anyway, and probably shouldn't have.

Normally, working out how a film came together is neither here nor there, whether looking at something as a critic, or simply as any fan of film, but I suspect a lot of people are going to wonder about this one, and I think in this case it's worth looking at for...

Hong Kong Phooey film: let sleeping dogs lie
The cartoon canine is to be voiced by Eddie Murphy in a CGI reboot. Why? They only made 16 episodes for a reason ...

Of course there's going to be a Hong Kong Phooey film. And of course it'll blend CGI with live-action comedy. And of course Eddie Murphy will provide the voice of Hong Kong Phooey. Of course all of that will happen. Hollywood loves plundering old cartoons for ideas and, now that Shrek has finished, Eddie Murphy needs some voiceover work to stop him making a Norbit sequel. This was always going to happen. There's no point fighting it.

But there's a problem. Even in its original form, Hong Kong Phooey was rubbish. The scripts were stale, the animation was jerky and every episode was basically identical. They only made 16 episodes for a reason. The sheen of irony and misplaced nostalgia might have buoyed its reputation in recent years, but...

Forecast: Can 'Cowboys & Aliens' Rope in Audiences?
Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig in Cowboys & Envahisseurs (2011)
This weekend, three new nationwide releases duke it out: Cowboys & Aliens rides on to approximately 5,600 screens at 3,750 locations, The Smurfs plucks around 5,400 screens at 3,395 locations (including 2,042 showing it in 3D), while Crazy, Stupid, Love. woos more than 3,300 screens at 3,020 locations. Throw in holdovers Captain America: The First Avenger and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, and that's the Top Five for the weekend. Historical antecedents point to a 50-60 percent drop for Captain America, which would give Cowboys & Aliens the edge to claim first place this weekend. On paper, an action spectacle directed by Jon Favreau (Iron Man), starring Daniel Craig (James Bond) and Harrison Ford (Indiana Jones/Han Solo), co-written by Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci (Transformers, Star Trek), produced by Ron Howard and Brian Grazer and executive-produced by Steven Spielberg teams with box office potential. But Cowboys & Aliens has struggled in its extensive, year-long marketing campaign (including its Super Bowl spot). Sure,...

Lee Pace Hops From 'Hobbit' to 'Lincoln'
Lee Pace is all over the place these days.

Although some of us have been fans since spotting him in Tarsem Singh's sobfest "The Fall" or TV's "Pushing Daisies," Pace is taking it to the next level (and leaving "Marmaduke" in the dust) with bigger and better roles all the time. As we know, he's vamping it up in "Breaking Dawn" as Garrett and traveling to Middle Earth to rule over the Elves as Thranduil.

But that's not all! He's just signed on for a role in Steven Spielberg's star-studded "Lincoln," where he'll play pro-Confederate NYC Mayor Fernando Wood.

Not cool, dude. Not. Cool. No doubt Lincoln, aka Daniel Day-Lewis, will have something to say about that!

"Lincoln," which is not to be confused with "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," has a crazy cast that includes Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sally Field, David Strathairn, John Hawkes, James Spader,...

Lee Pace Joins Steven Spielberg's Lincoln To Play A Confederate New York City Mayor
Lee Pace, the adorable star of the adorably short-lived TV show Pushing Daisies, has had a tricky time pursuing movie stardom since that show ended. He was excellent in Tarsem's The Fall, but I think we all know the visuals and the preternaturally talented child actress Catinca Untaru were the real stars of that movie. He's also been excellent in movies like Ceremony and Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, but I'll give you a dollar if you can find 10 people in your zip code who saw both of them. And then, to pay the bills, he's showed up in Marmaduke and When in Rome, but since we like the guy we'll just not talk about it. Things are looking up for the actor, though, and in the form of a hilariously diverse resume for 2011. He's just wrapped up a stint on Broadway in The Normal Heart, the revival...

The 5th Annual Pajiba Ten: The 10 Most Bangable Celebrities on the Planet
Welcome to the 5th Annual Pajiba Ten: A list of the 10 Most Bangable Celebrities on the Planet as voted on by our readers. Thanks to new rules which elevate celebrities who have been on the list at list twice into the Pajiba 10 Hall of Fame, we actually have seven new entrants onto the 10 in our 5th year. That's fresh blood, folks, for your drooling pleasure. It's also the first year in which four women made this list, instead of the usual three.

If you're curious, there are quite a few who just missed the cut this year, including Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Benedict Cumberbatch, Donald Glover, and -- sadly -- there is no "Doctor Who" representation this year as our worst fears were confirmed: David Tennant and Matt Smith split the vote, while Karen Gillan simply annoyed too many of you in her latest "Who" run to merit the votes necessary.

Money Mark, Pearl Jam's Mike McCready & More Tune Up 'Horrible Bosses'
The upcoming comedy "Horrible Bosses" has a pretty outrageous premise--three dudes decide to help each other kill their bosses. So appropriately, the soundtrack is going to be just as...eclectic. Film Music Reporter reveals that composer Christopher Lennertz ("Marmaduke," "Alvin & The Chipmunks," "Supernatural") has enlisted some pretty interesting talent to help score the film. Frequent Beastie Boys collaborator Money Mark (keyboards), Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready and session/touring musicians Dave Levita (Eminem, guitar), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction, bass), Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band, bass), Victor Indrizzo (Beck, drums) and DJ Cheapshot (Linkin Park, turntables) have all combined forces for the…...
