Tyler Perry's Alex Cross Is Climbing the Streaming Charts 13 Years Later
Image
While known by most for directing and starring in his productions, Tyler Perry has stepped out of his comfort zone to appear in the occasional film, including a widely panned book adaptation that's become a streaming hit 13 years later. Perry's Alex Cross, based on one of the best thriller novels ever, is a fast-rising entry on the Starz charts.

Per Flix Patrol, Alex Cross is one of Starz' top most popular movies in the U.S. The adaptation ranks 4th on the Starz chart, missing out on a podium that includes two Perry productions: the stage play adaptation of Why Did I Get Married? and his 2010 film, Why Did I Get Married Too?...

Tyler Perry Confirms New Sequel To $116M Comedy Franchise, Original Cast Expected To Return
Image
Tyler Perry may not be the most consistent director in terms of critical reception, but he has had an incredibly impressive rate of production. A multi-hyphenate talent who has served as producer, writer, director, and actor — and sometimes all on the same project — he has an impressive filmography that mostly includes comedies.

Perry is best known for his work on the Madea franchise. This began with the character's appearance in The Diary of A Mad Black Woman, a 2005 film that Perry wrote and acted in. Most recently, that franchise continued with the 2025 Netflix release Madea's Destination Wedding.

Perry's output has been even more prominent in the last few years because of his deal with Netflix. The streamer formed this multi-year partnership with Perry in October 2023, which would allow Perry to produce multiple movies for the streamer.

This deal has been pretty successful for the creator. His movie Straw, which came out this year,...

Tyler Perry is asking, “Why did I get married again?”

To clarify, the movie mogul isn’t actually wed, but he’s finished the script for the long-awaited third movie in the “Why Did I Get Married?” franchise, which has been rumored to continue in recent years.

On Wednesday, Perry posted the cover page of the “table draft” version of the script for the movie, seemingly titled “Why Did I Get Married Again?” with the caption “I’m just gonna sit this right here!” He also conspicuously tagged the franchise’s main cast: Tasha Smith, Sharon Leal, Michael Jai White, Lamman Rucker, Jill Scott and Janet Jackson. Perry also stars as one of the eight college friends who wrestle with challenges in their marriage during their annual reunion.

Cicely Tyson, Pioneering Actress, Dead at 96
Image
Cicely Tyson, the trailblazing actress died whose career spanned more than six decades, died Thursday afternoon, her manager Larry Thompson confirmed. She was 96.

From the start of her career, Tyson resolved to portray strong, positive, and realistic images of black women onscreen, and for many, she represented an enduring strength. Tyson received an Oscar nomination in 1973 for Martin Ritt’s drama Sounder (and was finally given an honorary Oscar in 2018), and became famous to a wider audience for her starring role in the 1974 TV movie The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman,...

Cicely Tyson, Pioneering Hollywood Icon, Dies at 96
Image
Emmy- and Tony-winning actress Cicely Tyson, who distinguished herself in theater, film and television, died on Thursday afternoon. She was 96.

“I have managed Miss Tyson’s career for over 40 years, and each year was a privilege and blessing,” her manager, Larry Thompson, said in a statement. “Cicely thought of her new memoir as a Christmas tree decorated with all the ornaments of her personal and professional life. Today she placed the last ornament, a Star, on top of the tree.”

Her memoir “Just As I Am” was published on Tuesday.

Tyson broke into movies with the 1959 Harry Belafonte film “Odds Against Tomorrow,” followed by “The Comedians,” “The Last Angry Man,” “A Man Called Adam” and “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” Refusing to participate in the blaxploitation movies that became popular in the late ’60s, she waited until 1972 to return to the screen in the drama “Sounder,” which captured several...

Review: ‘Tyler Perry’s Acrimony’ Lands Somewhere Between Douglas Sirk and Tommy Wiseau
After a four-year hiatus from melodrama, Tyler Perry has returned with one of his most rousing pictures yet, Acrimony, which lands somewhere between Douglas Sirk and Tommy Wiseau. Perry’s career has swung between the broad comedy of the Madea adventures to more serious dramas like his best pictures, Daddy’s Little Girl and the Family That Preys. Then there are the films that fall squarely in-between his two operating modes: Why Did I Get Married Too? and Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, which offer a morality tale with no time for subtext. While Sirk’s pictures offered a broad, on-the-nose surface morality tale, he specialized in subversive mise-en-scene, subtly pushing the boundaries of good taste. With Perry, what you see is exactly what you get and those expecting restraint and subtext ought to look really anywhere else. About 30 minutes in when leading lady Melinda Gayle (Taraji P. Henson...

Lionsgate swings to Q1 loss
Katherine Heigl in Kiss & Kill (2010)
Toronto -- The legal bill at Lionsgate for trench warfare with Carl Icahn is putting big dents in the mini-studio's bottom line.

Lionsgate on Monday posted a first quarter loss of $64.1 million to June 30, against a year-earlier profit of $36.3 million.

The reversal was due in part to $7.3 million in "corporate defense costs related to shareholder activist activities."

With Icahn looking to oust the company's top management and board of directors, Vancouver-based Lionsgate recorded $23.3 million in additional stock-based compensation caused by change of control provisions in senior executive contracts.

And Lionsgate piled on $71.2 million in additional theatrical marketing costs during the first quarter to release three wide releases, Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married Too?," "Killers" and "Kick-Ass," against one wide release during the same period of 2010, "Crank 2."

Lionsgate's release of "Killers," which stars Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, also disappointed at the boxoffice.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer...

Sam Worthington in Le Choc des Titans (2010)
Action remake Clash Of The Titans has conquered the competition at the U.S. box office, debuting at number one with $61.4 million (£38.4 million) in earnings at the weekend (02-04Apr10).

The blockbuster, starring Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes, has made a total of $64.1 million (£40.1 million) in the U.S. including preview screenings on Thursday night.

Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? was runner-up with $30.2 million (£18.9 million) in ticket sales - marking a triumph for singer/actress Janet Jackson, who went to work on the comedy just a day after her brother, the late Michael Jackson, was laid to rest in June.

Meanwhile, animated adventure How to Train Your Dragon slipped from the top spot to three with $29.2 million (£18.3 million), and now boasts a 10-day total of $92.3 million (£57.7 million).

Miley Cyrus' new drama The Last Song debuted at number four with $16.2 million (£10.1 million), while Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland slipped from two to five with nearly $8.3 million (£5.2 million) in earnings. Burton's whimsical collaboration with Johnny Depp now boasts a five-week total of nearly $309.8 million (£193 million).

'Clash of the Titans' has a record-breaking Easter weekend at the box office; Tyler Perry sequel bows strong
Sam Worthington in Le Choc des Titans (2010)
It was a record Easter weekend at the box office thanks to robust performances by Clash of the Titans, Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too, and the animated How to Train Your Dragon, which held on well its second weekend in theaters. All told, the three films combined helped lead the box office higher than last year's frame, when Fast and Furious opened to $70.9 million. (Last year at this time was not Easter weekend.) Clash of the Titans earned $61.4 million for the three-days, putting its total cume, including Thursday's midnight showings, at  an estimated $64 million (per-screen average...

Titans Tops The US Box Office
Sam Worthington in Le Choc des Titans (2010)
Yes, the reviews swung between decent to tepid, and straight on down to loathsome and the sloppy, post-production 3D conversion, every seemed to agree, made it worse, but neither of those could stop Clash Of The Titans from storming the box office and pillaging $61.4 million from moviegoers across the ocean.Tyler Perry, a filmmaker whose work goes largely unnoticed over here, scored yet another resounding win with his latest relationship drama, Why Did I Get Married Too? (it’s the awkwardly titled sequel to Why Did I Get Married, in case you were wondering), taking second place with $30.1 million. Not bad for a film that cost $20 million to make. Those two shoved DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon down to third place, where it made $29 million in its second weekend.Fourth went to what must have seemed like a dream combination (Miley Cyrus and Nicholas Sparks), with the tween favourite...

Friday Report: Good Friday for 'Clash,' Tyler Perry
Sam Worthington in Le Choc des Titans (2010)
Clash of the Titans raked in an estimated $26.4 million on approximately 6,700 screens at 3,777 sites, but it wasn't the only busy movie on Good Friday: Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? pulled in an estimated $12.3 million on around 2,900 screens at 2,155 sites, while The Last Song collected an estimated $7.1 million on close to 3,300 screens at 2,673 sites.

Compared to 300, the massively-promoted Clash of the Titans's opening day fell short, considering its 3D and Good Friday boost. 300 nabbed $28.1 million on around 4,800 screens at 3,103 sites on its non-holiday first day (or the equivalent of nearly $32 million adjusted for ticket price inflation), and that led to a $70.9 million opening weekend. Clash played at 1,810 3D sites (the 3D share is unavailable at this time and will be reported Sunday), and Good Friday is generally the biggest day of any given Easter weekend (Saturday is normally the busiest of most weekends), suggesting Clash's weekend might not hit $60 million.

Review: Why Did I Get Married Too?
Sharon Leal, Jill Scott, and Tasha Smith in Pourquoi je me suis marié aussi? (2010)
Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married Too? is a sequel, but you don't need to have watched 2007's Why Did I Get Married? to understand what's going on. In fact, you barely need to watch this one to understand what's going on. In accordance with his usual style, Perry spells things out very clearly: This character is Good, that one is Eeeee-vil, these events are Happy, these events are Sad. Picture three weeks of daytime soap opera episodes, crammed into two hours.

The premise is that four well-to-do Atlanta couples take a retreat once a year to evaluate their marriages and improve their relationships. Terry (Tyler Perry) and Dianne (Sharon Leal) are blissfully happy, with two little kids at home. Angela (Tasha Smith) and Marcus (Michael Jai White) fight constantly, probably because he's a serial cheater and she's a belligerent lush. Patricia (Janet Jackson), a bestselling self-help author,...

'How To Train Your Dragon' Schools Box-Office Competition
'Alice in Wonderland' falls to second place, as 'Hot Tub Time Machine' has lukewarm opening.

The Box-Office Top Five

#1 "How to Train Your Dragon" ($43.3 million)

#2 "Alice in Wonderland" ($17.3 million)

#3 "Hot Tub Time Machine" ($13.7 million)

#4 "The Bounty Hunter" ($12.4 million)

#5 "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" ($10 million)

After three straight weekends at the top of the charts, Disney's "Alice in Wonderland" surrendered the box-office crown to DreamWorks' "How to Train Your Dragon," the new animated family film featuring the voices of Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler and Jonah Hill.

Despite topping "Wonderland" with a winning $43.3 million haul, "How to Train Your Dragon" still performed unimpressively given the 3-D film's $165 million production budget. Comparatively, "Alice in Wonderland" earned $116.1 million in its first weekend in theaters. This past weekend, "Wonderland" added an additional $17.3 million for a domestic total of $293 million.

How To Train Your Dragon Flies Its Way Into A #1 Box Office Debut
How to Train Your Dragon flew into the box office and torched Alice Wonderland, replacing that mediocre 3D story with its own mediocre 3D story. Showing on over 4,000 screens and with 3D prices having gone through the roof ($13 just for a matinee here in Burbank), Httyd came in with $43.3 million. I know it's number one, but the number isn't as impressive as I thought it would be. A year ago Monsters vs. Aliens made $59 million with lower ticket prices. Will it stay on top two weeks in a row? Who knows.Alice fell to #2 with an estimated $17.3 million. No big deal for Disney. The movie has mopped up at the box office and now stands at $656 million worldwide dollars. A huge hit for the Mouse House. And it'll kill on Blu-Ray/DVD.Hot Tub Time Machine came in third with a disappointing $13.6 million. Why haven't you people gone to see this movie?...

Box office Champ! Courtesy of DreamWorks Animation

The box office results for the weekend of March 26th-28th, has Dragons taking out Alice from the top spot.  Meanwhile, the Hot Tub was not enticing as many thought for moviegoers.  Here are the studio estimates (Click on title for review):

1.  How to Train Your Dragon ($43.3 million)

2.  Alice in Wonderland ($17.2 million)

3.  Hot Tub Time Machine ($13.6 million)

4.  The Bounty Hunter ($12.4 million)

5.  Diary of a Wimpy Kid ($9.9 million)

6.  She's Out of My League ($3.5 million)

7.  Green Zone ($3.3 million)

8.  Shutter Island ($3.1 million)

9.  Repo Men ($2.9 million)

10.  Avatar ($ 2.2 million)

Analysis

Alice in Wonderland had a strong hold on numero uno at the box office, and is nearing the milestone mark of $300 million.  Look for the flick to finish around $320 million during its theatrical run.  What blew this out of the top spot was the lauded 3-D animation How to Train Your Dragon.  The debut and the nearly perfect rating from critics everywhere,...

For a lot of people, DreamWorks is kind of the also-ran when it comes to computer animation. There's Pixar, and if you can't get in there, you go to DreamWorks. In some ways, it's not fair to either company. Pixar has the dual strains of being both commercially successful and critically noteworthy, while DreamWorks has to labor under the strain of being commercially successful while being, in some ways, lighter in tone than Pixar. DreamWorks could get away with making Cars, but because Pixar made it, it's seen as a way to push toys on kids in a purely commercial venture.

The one trait the two companies share is that they know how to make a whole lot of money. DreamWorks' latest, How To Train Your Dragon,...

April Preview
After March was dominated by 3D fantasy Alice in Wonderland, the April box office is likely to be more diverse, though it does kick off with another 3-D fantasy, Clash of the Titans. Last April saw a record gross of over $695 million, and, between some enticing new entries and March holdovers, this April aims to be busy as well.

April's highest profile release is the Clash of the Titans remake on Easter weekend, April 2. Originally scheduled for Mar. 26, Clash needed breathing room between it and How to Train Your Dragon after its last minute addition of 3D. Clash has been positioned as the must-see Spring action event, and its historical fantasy approach mirrors that of a past Spring success, 300. While hitting 300-level attendance may be a tall order, Clash has the best chance of any April release to top $200 million. April 2 also sees the debut of sequel Tyler Perry's...

Keyshia Cole's Literacy Questioned by a Judge
Rumor has it, R 'n' B singer Keyshia Cole has been blasted by a judge for appearing to be illiterate. According to TMZ, a New Jersey judge has questioned Keyshia's literacy as she, in her written opinion, found the "Let It Go" singer's testimony was "confused and at times nonsensical."

Offering more details to the story, TMZ reported that when the judge asked Keyshia to read certain documents while testifying, the 28-year-old seemed so reluctant "that it appears at times that she was not literate." The site further noted that the judge realized the singer was literate when she managed to read documents.

Keyshia Cole appeared before the judge on Thursday, March 25 for the lawsuit stemming from her canceled gig in 2006. The mother of one was being sued by an event promoter who insisted the "Why Did I Get Married Too?" actress blew off her appearance after he paid her $15,000 up front.

Janet Jackson Not Working on New Album
Following the release of Janet Jackson's new song called "Nothing", fans might be wondering whether or not the 43-year-old singer has started to work on her new album. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Janet admitted she has returned to studio but was not making new music for her own effort.

"There was a time where I was actually in the studio and I was recording, but I'm not working on an album," she said. "There have been a lot of record labels that have asked me to sit down and talk with them, but I don't know if I want to do something completely independent, or go with a major."

The actress who soon will be seen reprising her "Why Did I Get Married?" role in its sequel "Why Did I Get Married Too?" also hasn't decided what kind of music she will make for her next treatment.

Tyler wants You to get married…again
In a promotional gimmick to hype his upcoming Why Did I Get Married Too opening April 2nd (you know, the film that Tyler, straining with every fiber of his being, tries again to convincingly portray a straight married guy…), Lionsgate has announced that they are inviting black married couples this Saturday, Black Marriage Day (who knew there was such a thing????), March 27th, to renew their vows at a series of special “Let’s Get Married Again” celebrations in Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. Participating couples are also eligible for a chance to win a 2nd honeymoon in the Bahamas, and even better, a chance to win Tyler Perry DVD Movie Packs!!!!! Hey wouldn’t that be grounds for a divorce?

Hey Tyler I’ve got a better idea to promote the film: How about actually for once letting the media and public see the film at an advance screening?...

Director Tyler Perry has landed some big names for his next movie For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf - he's reportedly signed up superstars Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey.

The Madea Goes to Jail filmmaker took on the challenge of adapting Ntozake Shange's controversial 1975 play for the big screen last September after Whoopi Goldberg's planned Broadway revival fell victim to a lack of investors.

But Perry is forging ahead with the movie version of the play and will reunite with Jackson, who stars in his new movie Why Did I Get Married Too?, and Carey, who won critical acclaim for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.

He has also landed Goldberg for his project, in addition to The Last King of Scotland star Kerry Washington and singer Macy Gray, according to bvonmovies.com.

Production is expected to begin in New York in June and released next year.

On April 2, Tyler Perry will probably make another big splash at the box office when "Why Did I Get Married Too?" opens nationwide. But the writer/director is already thinking about his next project, the film adaptation of Ntozake Shange's 1975 play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf."

In an interview with AOL's Black Voices blog, Perry shared that actresses being considered for the cast included Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine and Macy Gray. IMDb also has Halle Berry, Jill Scott and Oprah Winfrey attached to the flick.

Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey join Tyler Perry's 'Colored Girls'
Tyler Perry has announced that Whoopi Goldberg plus singing stars Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey are joining his cast in "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf."

According to Black Voices, other names to join include Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, Loretta Devine and another singer-actress, Macy Gray. The project will be the film adaptation of the Ntozake Shange poem-play featuring 20 African-American women speaking on the issues they face in modern society. It debuted in 1975 and made its way to Broadway in 1976.

Lensing starts in late June for what Perry estimates will be a winter 2010/2011 release. The announcement was made last night as the director-actor-producer promoted the premiere of "Why Did I Get Married Too?".

"Don't worry, Madea won't be in it," Perry told HitFix of the film late last year.

In Defense Of Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls…” Adaptation
Say it ain’t so! A Shadow And Act post in defense of one Mr Tyler Perry? Well… sort of. Read on…

Browsing over reactions to yesterday’s casting news on Tyler Perry’s adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, as well as renewed reactions to the project overall, not just on this blog, but all over the web – I noticed a trend of assumptions being made about the project that I’d like to address here – specifically about the nature of the adaptation, and its production/release schedule.

I’m no Tyler Perry fan, as long-time readers of this blog will know; but, it’s clear that the man is here to stay (at least while his movies are still profitable), and, I’ve long given up on fretting over him and his movies. Since he is almost...

Janet Jackson
Jackson Thankful For 'Sweetheart' Perry
Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson will forever be thankful to director Tyler Perry after he halted shooting on their new movie Why Did I Get Married Too? so she had time to grieve following the death of her brother Michael.

The singer/actress reprises her role as a psychotherapist in the sequel to 2007's Why Did I Get Married?, but production on the project ground to a halt last June when news of Michael Jackson's sudden passing hit the headlines.

Janet Jackson was left devastated and struggled to cope with the loss of her closest sibling - but she credits Perry with helping her overcome the tragic shock.

She tells People.com, "He actually stopped production and was there for me. (He was) constantly calling me, making sure I was Ok, making sure that there wasn't anything that I needed or my family needed.

"(He's) such a sweetheart, so giving and so loving."

Jackson refused to delay production on the movie anymore than she already had and declined Perry's offer to take a few weeks off to spend time with her relatives - and the director only allowed her back on the Bahamas set after being assured that she was in the right frame of mind to work.

He says, "Once I spoke to her and found out that she was at a place of strength and going to be with her family, I felt safe enough to know that she was going to be Ok."

Jackson recently admitted she channelled her anger at the King of Pop's death into one furious scene when she had to smash up furniture with a golf club, revealing, "You have to dig deep (for the role) but there was some stuff that was right there for me. Stuff that had just happened, with my brother passing..."

And Perry admits focusing her energy on her work probably helped Jackson return to normality: "I think that a lot of times, people are not able to release. They don't have a way to let go. And that's the great thing about having a film like this, where she got to do all of these crazy things. And I think all of (her) emotion is in the film, I really do."...

Janet Jackson Checks Out “Why Did I Get Married Too?”
She’s always up to something, and last night (March 22) Janet Jackson was in the house for a special screening of her new film “Why Did I Get Married Too?” in New York City.

The “Control” songstress looked lovely as she arrived at the School of Visual Arts Theater sporting an all-black ensemble with black heels.

Having lost her brother Michael Jackson last June, Janet is finally opening up about her grieving process. She told press, "Everyone's different about it, I was different about it than the rest of my family.”

And “Why Did I Get Married Too?” director Tyler Perry said Janet really poured herself into the role after Michael died. Janet Jackson Makes The Married Too Premiere
Janet Jackson hasn’t had the easiest time since that infamous “wardrobe malfunction” in 2004. In the five years since, she’s lost her brother, broken up with long-time boyfriend Jermaine Dupri (though not before he vomited on her in public), suffered vertigo on stage and left her last record label after only one (flop) album. With all the great music she’s given us, we’re glad to see her smiling away at the special screening for Why Did I Get Married Too? in NYC last night, joined by everyone from Jill Scott and the Rev. Al Sharpton to Ice-t and CoCo (yes, star/writer/producer/director Tyler Perry was there too). While the film is unlikely to top the box office when it’s released in April (a little flick called Clash Of The Titans comes out the same day), Perry’s track record suggests Jackson should have another hit on her hands.

Breaking – Tyler Perry Reveals “For Colored Girls…” Cast
At last night’s premiere for his latest film, ‘Why Did I Get Married Too?, Tyler Perry revealed his cast for his upcoming adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem, For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf, and Black Voices was there to capture it all.

So, all the rumors and guesses as to which actresses (or non-actresses) will be selected to star in the film, can officially be squelched.

Without further ado… here’s your cast folks (part of it anyway): Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whoopi Goldberg, Phylicia Rashad, Jurnee Smollett, Kimberly Elise, Kerry Washington, and Macy Gray.

No Oprah Winfrey? When I last checked she was the only one who was a sure thing, according to both she and Tyler Perry. Also, no Beyonce, Halle Berry, Angela Bassett, or Thandie Newton as previously mentioned. Although, they could still very well be cast in peripheral roles.
