N.W.A: Straight Outta Compton

10 Things You Need to Know About Simone Ashley
Image
Simone Ashley landed her first-ever role as a background character in 2015’s Straight Outta Compton. It was this small role that led to her appearances in episodes of Wolfblood and Broadchurch and her breakthrough role in Sex Education. Ashley’s casting in Bridgerton was announced when Season 1 of her other Netflix show became a major streaming hit.

Bridgerton gave her immense popularity and propelled her into a TV lead status. Fans of the regency romance drama would be thrilled to know that Ashley is reportedly part of The Devil Wears Prada sequel. Deadline reported that the actress has joined the ensemble cast, featuring Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci.

Ashley joined the cast after it was earlier reported that Kenneth Branagh was tapped for a role in the sequel. The new film will explore Meryl Streep’s character Miranda Priestly as she confronts the reality of the decline of the print industry.

To be fair, I’d probably lose my job and disappoint my father if I set out to write a “celebration of fly white boys who love beautiful queens of every race,” too.

14 Tom Hanks’ Failson

Tragically, the “scared straight”-style wilderness intervention he was subjected to as a teen didn’t take, and Chet Hanks has achieved only infamy in his decades-long struggle for pop-culture relevance. His song “White Boy Summer” is the closest he’s gotten so far, but the intended “celebration of fly white boys who love beautiful queens of every race” has turned into more of a white privilege/white pride anthem.

13 Tom Hanks’ Failniece

Aspiring reality star and current “content creator” Carly Reeves got her 15 minutes on Fox’s Claim to Fame, a reality game show where all the contestants were secretly related to megastars. She lost early on, and went viral for her mic’d-up,...

After The Twilight Saga and one-off films like Renfield, vampires were truly beginning to lose their bite. Gone were the days of real monster movies where the creature lurking in the shadows was but moments away from pouncing to tear its victim limb from limb and gulp down its blood. Over the last year, vampire flicks started to get back on course thanks to Gary Dauberman’s ‘Salem’s Lot and Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu, but many are still sleeping on one of the greatest bloodsucker features in recent years. Luckily, Prime Video is the current home of The Last Voyage of the Demeter and audiences around the world are finally discovering what they’ve been missing out on. Right now, countries like Argentina, Mexico, and Panama have helped raise the title up to the Top 10 where it’s currently settled into fourth place.

The Odyssey: Everything We Know About The Christopher Nolan Movie
Image
Award-winning director Christopher Nolan is no stranger to massive projects, but his adaptation of "The Odyssey" will probably be his biggest undertaking yet. The director behind "The Dark Knight," "Inception," and "Oppenheimer," (just to name a few of his blockbuster films) is taking on Homer's epic poem, and filming is already underway for the project — which is set to release in 2026 (as of this writing).

So what do we need to know about "The Odyssey" before it hits theaters and, in all likelihood, blows critics and audiences away? If you didn't have to read "The Odyssey" for any of your high school English classes, I'll also go over the basic plot points of "The Odyssey," remind you that it is, in fact, a sequel — to another of Homer's poems — and talk about some straightforward and wildly divergent adaptations of this famous story. After derailing a partial settlement last week and claiming he wanted a full-blown trial, Suge Knight made another about-face today and agreed to a $1.5 million settlement in his wrongful death civil case.

The last-minute pact averted a retrial over claims filed by the wife and two daughters of Terry Carter, the Compton businessman who died on Jan. 29, 2015, when Knight mowed him down in the parking lot of a Los Angeles burger stand in an incident linked to the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton.

The other man, Cle “Bone” Sloan, was rushed to a hospital with two crushed ankles and a serious head laceration. Knight abandoned the truck and turned himself in for questioning at 3 a.m. the next day.

Robert Zemeckis, M. Night Shyamalan, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Radu Jude Set Up New Projects

Directing the best American film of 2024 that’s also the uber-rare piece of experimental art to screen in multiplexes and––you know where this is headed––massive box-office bomb would typically spell the end of a director’s career. It’s to his fortune and ours alike that Robert Zemeckis’ well never quite runs dry, ergo: Deadline reports he’s set to direct Jennifer Lopez in the Netflix thriller The Last Mrs. Parrish, an adaptation of Liv Constantine’s novel that’ll be scripted by John Gatins (Flight) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton).

Suge Knight’s Wrongful-Death Retrial Officially Ran Off the Rails Today

Suge Knight’s wrongful death retrial veered wildly off course Tuesday when the Death Row Records founder dramatically contradicted his lawyer’s claim that he had agreed to a last-minute deal in the long-running civil case. The partial settlement would have allowed Knight to avoid facing a jury over claims he recklessly killed Compton businessman Terry Carter with his Ford Raptor truck 10 years ago, sources and court filings reveal.

The breakdown came as a panel of prospective jurors was due to fill a tiny courtroom for jury selection in downtown Los Angeles.

Suge Knight’s Lawyer Tries, Fails to Escape Mogul’s Retrial

Suge Knight appeared remotely from a San Diego prison Thursday and told a judge he was surprised to hear his longtime lawyer, David Kenner, had asked to withdraw as his attorney just weeks before a major civil trial.

Speaking over a phone line from his detention center, Knight told the court he wanted to move ahead with his April 7 re-trial over a civil lawsuit tied to the 2015 death of Compton businessman Terry Carter. A New ‘Friday’ Movie, ‘Conjuring’ Phase Two, and Surviving Corporate Merger Hell: A Chat with New Line Boss Richard Brener
Image
In a tumultuous Hollywood age of corporate takeovers and executive turnovers, Richard Brener is a rarity of the business. The tall, soft-spoken president and Cco of New Line has been at company for 30, yes, you read that right, 30 years come May 1. He started as a temp in Los Angeles, working in every conceivable department. Then, when a story editor position opened up, applied for the job. That gig instead went to a woman named Donna Langley, now the chairman NBCU Entertainment & Studios, but then an executive’s assistant. “That was smart of them because she’s obviously done very, very well for herself,” Brener notes while sitting in New Line’s offices on the Burbank lot of Warner Bros. Discovery. “She’s now a dame and I’m just a mister.” But New Line execs were impressed enough with the Yale history grad that they created the position of staff reader just for him.

‘Black Heat’ Review: Well-Armed Angry Parents Rescue Their Daughter in a Lively Shoot-’Em-Up
Image
There’s something inherently exciting about a thriller that takes place entirely within one apartment building or complex — a setting that is contained while threatening potentially nasty surprises behind every door. Prolific indie writer-director-producer Wes Miller’s Orlando-shot “Black Heat” doesn’t offer much more than that basic concept, yet he keeps this high-body-count action exercise pounding along in lively if blunt fashion.

Starring “Straight Outta Compton’s” Jason Mitchell and Tabatha Robinson (aka rapper DreamDoll) as parents rescuing their daughter from criminals at a sprawling housing project, the film could have used some additional polish in terms of both script and style. Still, it’s got enough propulsive energy to keep viewers entertained. Dark Star Pictures and production company BLacklight are co-releasing to over 200 U.S. theaters on March 28.

In the opening sequence, marital couple Malik (Mitchell) and Alexis (Robinson) are traveling in their SUV, bantering about favorite movies like “Boyz n the Hood,...

Image
Two years after Suge Knight sought to overturn what he called his “illegally imposed” 28-year prison sentence in his hit-and-run manslaughter case, a California judge has rejected his bid, calling it both too late and based on evidence described as “not sincere.”

In a new ruling issued Tuesday and obtained by Rolling Stone, Los Angeles County Judge Laura F. Priver “summarily denied” Knight’s request, known as a writ of habeas corpus, saying he took too long to file it and didn’t have the grounds to support it either way.

Guild of Music Supervisors Awards: How often do they predict music Oscars?
Image
"Like a Bird" from the prison drama Sing Sing just won a key prize at the 15th Annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards on Sunday night so does that make the tune written by Abraham Alexander, Brandon Marcel, and Adrian Quesada the new frontrunner for the Best Song Oscar?

The guild has been handing out its award for Best Song Written and/or Recorded for a Film for the last nine years, and in that span it has lined up with the Oscars only three times: "City of Stars" from La La Land, "Shallow" from A Star is Born, and "What Was I Made For?" from Barbie. In four instances, the guild picked songs that were nominated for but didn't win the Oscar: "Mystery of Love" from Call Me by Your Name, "Hear My Voice" from The Trial of the Chicago 7, "Dos Oruguitas" from Encanto, and "This Is a Life...

The Oscar-Nominated Movie Roger Ebert Called “One of the Most Harrowing, Uncompromising Showbiz Biographies” Is Now Streaming on Hulu
Image
Biopics about famous musicians have been quite popular for some time, as any artist with a passionate fanbase is bound to turn out to a theater to hear their favorite songs performed. Although there are many entertaining music biopics like Rocketmanand Straight Outta Compton that succeed in celebrating groundbreaking changes within the music industry, the involvement of their subjects gives them a rather slanted view on history. While What’s Love Got To Do With It does seek to explore the life of Tina Turnerand her tumultuous relationship with her husband Ike Turner, it dug far deeper into the tension that existed between them and managed to earn both Angela Bassettand Laurence FishburneAcademy Award nominations for their work. Due to the film’s unflinching depiction of domestic abuse, Roger Ebert called What’s Love Got To Do With It “a story of pain and courage, uncommonly honest and unflinching.”...
