Panic Fest offers up another fantastic selection of shorts this year, but two in particular have stuck with me. Facies and Apotemnofilia both deliver shocking, stomach-churning moments of extreme violence that are memorable enough for the bodily reactions they elicit. But it’s their equal interest in the visceral and conceptual that makes them feel special, and like great candidates for future development into features. Facies, co-written and co-directed by Raúl Cerezo, one half of the directing duo behind The Elderly and The Passenger, along with Javier Trigales and Carlos Moriana, pulls viewers into a devastating story of the Spanish Inquisition. In 1692, more than 200 years into the Inquisition’s crusade on all perceived enemies of Catholicism, an inquisitor (Carlos Santos) forces an inventor (Daniel Ortiz)...

For your consideration. Let us say that Horror Short Film of the Year were something that was officially awarded by globally recognized group of our peers. Then we say that the honor was awarded to the horror short that accumulated the most festival stops during the year, combined with the most awards, we’re talking volume here. Iván Villamel and Raúl Cerezo’s La Nueva (aka The Newcomer) would certainly make a strong case for being awarded that honor for 2023. So, officially that award doesn’t exist but even in name it is something you have to consider for La Nueva. The short film from the director of Mr. Dentonn and co-written by one of the writer-directors of La Pasajera (The Passenger) and Viejos (The...

Raging Grace tackles horrors that many immigrant workers face, highlighting prejudice, racism, and colonialism. The film's eerie atmosphere, jump scares, and haunting score create an immersive experience. While it may not be the best horror of the year, Raging Grace tells a powerful story about immigrant workers and their struggles.
Steeped in its haunting atmosphere, Raging Grace is an effective horror/thriller that tackles the prejudice, racism, and colonialism that many immigrant workers face in modern society. British-born Filipino writer-director Paris Zarcilla combines competent jump scares and an immersive soundscape to highlight the terror of what it sometimes means to live as an immigrant.
Using traditional Filipino instruments in its score, audiences will become instantly enshrouded in the films' unnerving atmosphere. Elevated by its small roster of complex characters, Raging Grace boasts a captivating story full of endless twists and turns that drive the story along unpredictably. It is a slow-burn,...

Huzzah! One of my favorite flicks from last year, The Elderly, from Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómezis, now available on VOD and Blu-ray from Dark Star Pictures. Devastated by an unexpected loss, octogenarian Manuel (Zorian Eguileor) finds his mental state rapidly shifting as disturbing impulses take root. Manuel struggles with his changing nature as his bonds with his son and pregnant daughter-in-law are tested. As Manuel's reality untethers, tensions around him begin to rise in a contagion of chaos set to erupt on the hottest night of the century. We have an exclusive clip to share with you today, to prompt you to check this Spanish horror flick out for yourselves. The clip comes from the opening of the story where we...

Simultaneously enigmatic and visceral, the new Spanish horror film The Elderly instantly sets a dreadful atmosphere and continues to build it to a crescendo of pure terror. It's a slow-burn until it isn't, with one of the grisliest final acts in recent memory. The film begins when an elderly woman dresses herself up in order to jump out a window and take her own life. Her husband, Manuel, is left alone but doesn't seem particularly fazed. In fact, his indifference to death and suffering becomes increasingly disturbing as the audience asks themselves, is he insane, suffering from dementia, or something somehow more... inhuman?
Manuel's loving but struggling son, Mario (an endlessly relatable Gustavo Salmerón) takes him in, much to the chagrin of his pregnant new wife, Lena. Mario's first wife died some time ago, and their daughter, Naia (Paula Gallego in one of the year's best performances), harbors resentments and insecurities as a result.

The Elderly is a highly acclaimed horror film that combines grisly realism, social commentary, and jump scares to create a terrifying experience. Critics and festival-goers have praised the film's atmospheric pace, stunning cinematography, and intense moments that push the intensity up a notch. With an excellent construction and one of the best Spanish horror endings since [Rec], The Elderly is a must-watch for fans of the genre.
Death and aging are the universal glue; everything decays, and everyone gets old, until all our lights fade out. Senility and the suffering of aging has made for some great horror films in the past (we're specifically thinking of the excellent Relic from 2020), but it looks like the upcoming horror film The Elderly is going to take the cake (the one with 90 candles on it). Coming courtesy of Darkstar Pictures, the Spanish movie (otherwise known as Viejos in Spanish) will be released on VOD/Digital on October 31st,...

The trailer for horror film "The Elderly" introduces a widower navigating a lonely life after his wife's suicide, but eerie occurrences and visions raise questions about supernatural forces at play. "The Elderly" has gained critical acclaim for its brutal ending, praised for its emotional impact and excellent storytelling by its directors, Fernando González Gómez and Raúl Cerezo. The film marks the second collaboration between González Gómez and Cerezo, who established a successful partnership after co-directing their previous film, "The Passenger."

Dark Star will take North American rights; Mantícora, Latin American territory, and La Dalia, Spanish rights. “For the rest of the world, the partners will mutually agree to the most suitable sales representation,” said Antídoto Horror Factory partners in a statement.
For Mantícora, a distribution and sales company based in Mexico, fruit of a joint venture between Vcs Capital and Mónica Lozano’s Alebrije Cine, the move will mark the entry into film production.

This post contains spoilers for "Black Mirror" season 3, episode 4 "San Junipero."
Leave it to "Black Mirror" to make an episode involving euthanasia somehow hopeful. The Emmy-winning "San Junipero" has been hailed as "the show's finest hour" -- it topped our ranking of episodes from the first three seasons of "Black Mirror" in 2016, and was again near the top in our updated ranking of all five seasons in 2022. Now, with "Black Mirror" season 6 on the way in June 2023, it's as good a time as any to go back, revisit old episodes, and perhaps wax nostalgic about the highs and lows of the series.
Consider it a form of "immersive nostalgia therapy," of the kind that Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) undergo in "San Junipero." The episode is unique for "Black Mirror," not only because it's a love story with what could be interpreted as a happy ending, but because...

Fernando González Gómez and Raúl Cerezo’s “The Elderly” (2022) is a Spanish-language horror film that deals predominantly with the psychological breakdown of elderly people who suffer from loneliness and deprivation. It explores the life of an elderly man named Manuel, who has recently lost his wife and suffers from acute loneliness and grief. While his son and beloved granddaughter try to take care of him, they discover a hidden, darker side to the otherwise warmhearted octogenarian, and it is not just him but all the other aged people in town who start demonstrating highly erratic and detrimental behavior, causing widespread panic and creating bloody havoc across town. The film is a deviation from traditional horror flicks insofar as its horror element is concerned. Instead of emphasizing merely the supernatural, it focuses on setting up an atmosphere of uneasiness and terror, employing psychological tropes to propel its plot. Starring Zorion Eguileor,...

Our friends at Celluloid Screams announced their programme for this year's festival. This year's programme is bookended by two Spanish-language films. The Elderly, a film I rather enjoyed this Summer, will open the festival while the much anticipated horror flick, Evil Eye, from our friend Isaac Ezban is slated to close out the festival. Other Spanish-language films include The Passenger, the first film from the duo behind The Elderly, Raúl Cerezo and Fernando González Gómez, and Huesera, the Tribeca award winner from Michelle Garza Cervera. Other festival faves include The Harbinger, Something in the Dirt, Watcher and Holy Shit! There are a couple rep screenings worth noting - Bubba Ho-tep and Evil Dead 2 - but what really has our attention is the Ghostwatch: A 30th Anniversary...
