Nick Emerson was doing his job, sitting in an editing room in London, when he found out that he was up for an Oscar. He received one of the eight nominations for Edward Berger’s “Conclave,” which also scored nods for Best Picture and Best Actor (Ralph Fiennes).

“I just couldn’t believe it,” said Emerson, a first-time nominee for his work on the stylish Vatican potboiler. “We all jumped up and down and screamed. It’s a wonderful honor and I was definitely walking around in a bit of a daze for a couple of days afterwards.”

The BBC released a trailer for upcoming drama series Miss Austen, with Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, Line of Duty, It’s A Sin) starring as Jane Austen’s sister Cassandra, on Tuesday and unveiled a Sunday, Feb. 2 launch date.

In the U.S., the series will air on Masterpiece on PBS from Sunday, May 4.

All four episodes will become available on its BBC iPlayer streaming service from 6 a.m. London time that day, and the series will begin airing weekly episodes on BBC One that evening. Adapted from Gill Hornby’s best-selling novel of the same name, the drama is produced by Bonnie Productions for Masterpiece, in association with the BBC.

Director John Crowley’s romantic drama We Live in Time, which has a poster that has inspired many memes and stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, is said to be “breaking hearts on the fall film festival circuit” and will be receiving a limited theatrical release in the US on October 11th, with a UK release to follow on January 1st and a Spanish release set for January 3rd. While we wait for these We Live in Time release dates to come around, Crowley has already signed on to direct his next film. Two Taiwan-based production companies with features in this week’s Berlin Film Festival have joined forces to launch new venture, Long Hu Bao × An Attitude.

Taiwan’s Yi Tiao Long Hu Bao International Entertainment, is one of eight co-producers on main competition film “Shambhala,” from Nepal’s Min Bahadur Bham.

Yi Tiao Long Hu Bao is also one of three co-producers on Brazilian title “Sleep With Your Eyes Open” (aka “Dormir de olhos abertos”) directed by Nele Wohlatz, which debuts in Berlin’s Encounters section.

More than three and a half years have gone by since it was first announced that William Brent Bell – the director of Stay Alive, The Devil Inside, Wer, The Boy, Brahms: The Boy II, Separation, and Orphan: First Kill – would be making a folk horror film called Lord of Misrule. Two years have gone by since we heard the movie was in production, with filming taking place in Hertfordshire, UK. Now a trailer for Lord of Misrule has finally made its way online, and with that comes the news that the film will be receiving a theatrical and VOD release on December 8th. The actor will soon be seen in “All the Light We Cannot See,” the upcoming Netflix limited series based on the novel of the same name by Anthony Doerr. The series follows Marie-Laure LeBlanc (Aria Mia Loberti), a blind French teenager who crosses paths with a young German soldier named Werner Pfennig (Hofmaan), who is described as quiet and soulful with “a strong moral compass in a complicated world.” Together, he and Marie-Laure must learn to survive the devastation of the war in occupied France. Hofmann’s casting was announced in February 2022. The project is set to debut on Nov. 2.

Production has started on the StudioCanal pic, We Live In Time, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield.

Deadline previously revealed that Irish filmmaker John Crowley is directing the feature from a script penned by Nick Payne (Wanderlust). StudioCanal developed the script and is producing with Sunny March. Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland, and Guy Heeley are producers, with Benedict Cumberbatch set as executive producer.

Plot details have not been shared, but the film has been described as a “funny, deeply moving, and immersive love story.” The film had been expected to move into production later this year, but StudioCanal announced cameras are already rolling by tweeting an image from the set Tuesday morning.

And now it's been announced (via Deadline) that the pair will co-star in a new project together a romantic comedy film titled "We Live In Time."

It's a pleasant change from their recent filmography. Pugh appeared in a multitude of different genre-bending roles — Ari Aster's horror film "Midsommar," Olivia Wilde's "Don't Worry Darling," along with her superhero responsibilities in Marvel Studios' "Black Widow" and "Hawkeye." Garfield was recently seen in Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Tick, Tick... Boom!," Michael Showalter's "The Eyes of Tammy Faye," and his terrific television outing in Hulu's "Under the Banner of Heaven." The performers haven't appeared in a romantic comedy in a very long while, and this one's certainly shaping up to be an exciting project.

Netflix‘s six-episode Western series American Primeval rustled up a formidable posse today with several actors joining the cast. Betty Gilpin, Dane DeHaan, and Shea Whigham will star alongside Taylor Kitsch, who leads the limited series. The project hails from Pete Berg, Eric Newman, and Mark L. Smith, with Berg directing all episodes. In addition to stepping behind the camera, Berg will executive produce through Film 44 alongside Newman via Grand Electric.

The plot for American Primeval explores the birth of the American West and the trials and tribulations surrounding race, land, community, and power. Each group believes they’re entitled to the natural splendor of the territory and are willing to spill blood to plant their flag. The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (Hkiffs) has announced 28 in-development projects for the 21st Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (Haf), which is set to return as an in-person event for the first time since 2019.

The projects span horror, fantasy, romance, family drama and animation, and include seven from Hong Kong, eight from Haf Film Lab and 14 directorial debuts. Illuminative, the Native woman-led social justice organization, has announced the launch of the Indigenous House at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

The Indigenous House will open its doors on Main Street in Park City, Utah, where it will spotlight the creativity of Native peoples, unveil new research on Native voices in media and provide a space for community members and allies to explore issues that impact Native peoples.

There was a serial killer thriller, a ghostly horror, a child abduction mystery, a love story, a gangland crime tale and a family drama… all wrapped up in existential Nietzschean philosophy. By the end, it was a little of Life After Life plus a little of The Time Traveler’s Wife plus a little of Quantum Leap plus a little of Marcella plus a lot of other ideas given not quite enough room to breathe. Exclusive: Legendary British actor Stephen Fry has boarded Netflix’s The F**k it Bucket from The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures, joining a clutch of highly-rated newcomers including lead Sophie Wilde (You Don’t Know Me) and Boiling Point’s Lauryn Ajufo.

BBC Studios, the commercial arm of U.K. public broadcaster BBC, touted strong business momentum in its annual report on Tuesday, including record full-year revenue and earnings, as well as a 56 percent increase in production sales.

The company lauded “a very healthy year” for its TV channels group saying: “Content sales were strong at over £400 million (473 million), thanks to key brands like Doctor Who and Top Gear, unscripted landmarks The Universe and Green Planet, alongside hits from our indie partners, including The North Water, This Is Going to Hurt and The Outlaws.” And Tom Fussell, CEO of BBC Studios, said: “Our creative and financial success is clear for all to see.”

Netflix has announced the cast of its upcoming comedy series Unstable.

As previously reported, Rob Lowe will star in the project with his son, John Owen Lowe.

U.K. broadcaster ITV has commissioned “Six Four,” a four-part crime thriller inspired by the bestselling novel by Hideo Yokoyama.

Set primarily in Glasgow, the drama follows the O’Neills, police detective Chris and his wife, former undercover officer Michelle, whose teenage daughter goes missing. Chris is finds out that fatal mistakes were covered-up in the disappearance of another local girl and revisiting the case, he uncovers a series of errors, corruption and unbridled ambition. Michelle takes matters into her own hands using her skills. Meanwhile, the daughter of the justice minister is suddenly kidnapped, just as the minister is on the cusp of achieving an election victory.

It is created by BAFTA Scotland-winning screenwriter Gregory Burke (“’71”) and Clare McQuillan (“Impulse”) will also write on the series.

Burke said: “At its heart, ‘Six Four’ is a human story about two people under incredible amounts of pressure, who both choose to try and address their pasts.

Exclusive: Cast has been set on Hoard, the UK indie from debut feature director Luna Carmoon which is being funded by the BFI and BBC Film.

Leading the pic will be Saura Lightfoot Leon and Deba Hekmat, alongside BAFTA-nominated Hayley Squires and Joseph Quinn.

Filming commences in London this week on the feature, which is a drama set in the 1980s and 90s.

It is being produced by Loran Dunn for Delaval Film, Helen Simmons for Erebus Pictures (both BFI Vision Awardees), and Andy Starke for Anti-Worlds. The project is funded by the BFI and BBC Film, and was developed with BBC Film. Executive Producers are Kristin Irving for the BFI and Eva Yates for BBC Film.

Director Carmoon’s debut short, Nosebleed, premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and was selected for Sundance Ignite.

TripleC, a gateway organization that helps deaf, disabled, and neurodiverse people access the arts and media, will receive a BAFTA TV Craft Special Award during the British Academy Television Craft Awards. Actor Cherylee Houston (“Coronation Street”) founded TripleC and with a group of friends including Melissa Johns (“Grantchester”), they have built a platform for making the creative screen industry more inclusive.

Johns and Houston said: “When we set up this organization five years ago, we were just a group of disabled and non-disabled creatives coming together to see if we could make a change. I don’t think we ever knew the size of impact that that seed of an organization would have on the lives of so many deaf, disabled and/or neurodivergent creatives. The recognition from BAFTA will support our drive for change and help ensure accessibility and inclusivity is high up on every agenda.”

Two of the most respected practitioners working in the entertainment industry have slammed the U.K. government’s ongoing plans for broadcasters Channel 4 and BBC.

Earlier this month, U.K. Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries confirmed plans to sell Channel 4, citing the need to compete with the global streamers and saying that the proceeds of the sale would be put into independent production and creative skills in priority parts of the country.

Sections of the industry did not take kindly to the plan, leading to arguments and counter-arguments in the U.K. media.

Tessa Ross, BAFTA winner for outstanding British contribution to cinema, whose credits include “Billy Elliott,” “Slumdog Millionaire,” “Last King of Scotland,” “Ex Machina” and “Room,” and who has served as controller of film and drama at Channel 4, and as British Film Institute and National Film and Television School governor, is one of those unhappy with the decision.

BBC Studios has upped its 25% stake in “Brexit: The Uncivil War” producer House Productions to take full ownership of the London-based production company.

Launched in 2016 by the former head of Film 4 Tessa Ross and Working Title TV boss Juliette Howell (left), the company specializes in both film and TV with forthcoming credits including BBC One thriller “Sherwood”; an adaptation of Kate Atkinson’s bestselling novel “Life After Life”; Netflix feature film “The Wonder,” starring Florence Pugh, and “The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle”; and Disney Plus original “The Good Mothers” for Star.

Two more TV dramas are in the works, along with several film projects that will be fully financed and in production from 2022.
