After piloting the “Hunger Games” franchise to more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office, Francis Lawrence is taking on another dystopian text — Philip K. Dick’s novel “Vulcan’s Hammer,” directing and producing the movie with New Republic Pictures and Electric Shepherd Productions.

Lawrence will produce the adaptation under his About:Blank banner alongside veteran producers Brian Oliver and Bradley Fischer of New Republic, Cameron MacConomy from About:Blank and Isa Dick Hackett from Electric Shepherd.

“We’re very pleased to partner with the passionate team at New Republic and thrilled by Francis’s ambitious vision for bringing ‘Vulcan’s Hammer’ to the big screen,” Hackett said in a statement announcing the team up.

Dick’s novel is set following a devastating world war as the 70 nations of Earth form the Unity party and cede global governance to the Vulcan AI system, which algorithmically dictates policies for Unity to carry out.

Michael Sheen is in talks to join Vin Diesel in Sony’s “Bloodshot,” an individual with knowledge of the project tells TheWrap.

Sheen would play Dr. Emil Harting, the genius responsible for the cutting-edge nanotechnology that exists inside the human body to not only repair it, but push it further than normal human limitations. Eiza Gonzalez (“Baby Driver”) is circling the love interest role in the film.

The studio will start principal photography in July. The film will also reunite Diesel with “Fast and the Furious” mega-producer Neal Moritz, who is producing alongside Valiant’s Dinesh Shamdasani. “Outlander” star Sam Heughan has joined the cast of Sony’s “Bloodshot” opposite Vin Diesel, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Heughan is playing Corporal Harlan “So Long” Shifflet.

Mickey Jones, the actor whose many credits include “Sling Blade” and “Total Recall,” died Wednesday, a spokeswoman for the actor told TheWrap. He was 76.

“Mickey Jones died at 2:17 a.m. today of the effects of a long illness,” the spokeswoman said. Jones’ numerous appearances also included a run on the long-running FX series “Justified,” as marijuana distributor Rodney ‘Hot Rod’ Dunham, and on “Home Improvement,” as Pete Bilker.

Seeing as Matt Reeves will be directing Warner Bros.’ upcoming Dark Knight solo film The Batman, fans have generally assumed that he would also be providing the script for the movie. This looked even more sure when Reeves confirmed that he’s disregarding the previous screenplay written by Ben Affleck, Geoff Johns and Chris Terrio – back when Affleck was still attached to direct – and will be starting from scratch. Still, a look at Reeves’ resume reveals that he’s only co-written three scripts in his career, which had people concerned.

Thankfully, it looks like there’s nothing to worry about, as Splash Report is claiming that “sources” have informed them that Reeves will be bringing on board Mark Bomback to complete the screenplay for The Batman. If true, this choice makes a lot of sense.

Coming Soon brings us word that Sony Pictures has released the poster, and trailer, to the new movie Flatliners, the remake of the 1990 Joel Shumacher film which starred Julia Roberts and Keifer Sutherland. The remake stars Ellen Page and Diego Luna. The story centers around five college students who perform a dangerous experiment that tries to prove there is life after death. As each has a unique near death experience, they deal with the sins of their past while also dealing with the consequences of playing with the afterlife.

I am one of the few folks who tries to give remakes a chance. The original Flatliners movie wasn't bad at all. It wasn't a classic of film history, but the premise for the movie was a unique idea. What would happen if people could find a way to prove that there is life after death? What would be the consequences of their actions?...

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez turned Miller’s graphic novel Sin City into stylish noir for the silver screen over a decade ago, but would a television series be A Show To Kill For?

Networks hungry for old IP seem to think so. Deadline reports that suitors are lining up for a Sin City television adaptation, one that would introduce new characters in that universe.

No network is officially on board yet, but it can only be a matter of time. It's easy to imagine this being a big blockbuster of a show.

The project has picked up steam now that it has Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Len Wiseman (Total Recall), and The Walking Dead's Glen Mazzara behind it.

Mazzura, whose credits also include The Shield and The Omen, is set to write.

We’ll bypass the past couple holiday weekends cause that was so 2016, and we’ll instead get right into the new movies opening on Friday including two that opened in select cities and are expanding nationwide.

"I always get the shakes before a drop." The Bug War might be making its way back to the big screen, as another adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's seminal science fiction novel Starship Troopers is in the works at Columbia Pictures.

THR reveals that Columbia Pictures has hired Mark Swift and Damian Shannon (2017's Baywatch, 2009's Friday the 13th, Freddy vs. Jason) to write the screenplay for a new movie based on Heinlein's epic tale of responsibility, space marines, and killer bugs from above. The new film is not expected to be a remake of 1997's Starship Troopers or its three sequels, but will instead be a new take on Heinlein's 1959 book.

Matthew Milam will supervise the project, with Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe on board as producers. Moritz and Jaffe also helped bring 2012's Total Recall remake to the big screen, and back when they were promoting that film,...

Kate Beckinsale and her husband Len Wiseman have called it quits.

The Total Recall director filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences, according to TMZ. His court documents purportedly state that he and Beckinsale have both waived any right to spousal support, which suggests there is a prenup, the website reports.

The former couple met in 2003 while working on the first Underworld film together, which Wiseman directed, and they later tied the knot in 2004. The two do not have any children together. Beckinsale has a 16-year-old daughter, Lily, with former partner Michael Sheen.

Much has been written about just how dismal this year’s summer movies have been, but one of the silver linings in such a poor season has remarkably been indies. Caruso had a bit of a moment in the mid-2000s where it appeared he was going to be the hot new director to watch, directing Disturbia and Eagle Eye and being attached to film adaptations of Y: The Last Man and Preacher that never came to pass. But he ended up helming I Am Number Four in 2011 and his career took a big hit. That's what Justice League producer Deborah Snyder said during a recent set visit in London. She was responding to questions about whether or not the production had cast anyone to play the film's central villain, Steppenwolf, yet.

The production revealed Steppenwolf would be the main villain for Justice League, and a deleted scene from Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice even offered up a glimpse of what the character will look like.

Some were caught off guard by the notion that they hadn't yet cast someone to play such a pivotal role, considering that interview was conducted on the 31st day of production. You had to imagine she wasn't exaggerating when she said said how "close" they were to making a deal, because they kind of had to be.

Kate Beckinsale's return as Selene in Underworld: Blood Wars will now take place in the winter rather than the fall.

According to Box Office Mojo, Underworld: Blood Wars will be released by Screen Gems on January 6th, 2017. The film was previously slated to come out on October 14th, 2016.

A Lakeshore Entertainment film, Underworld: Blood Wars stars Beckinsale back in her role as the highly skilled vampire Selene, with Theo James once again playing David and Charles Dance returning as the vampire elder Thomas. Bradley James (Damien, iZombie) also plays a key role in the fifth Underworld film, which is directed by Anna Foerster from a screenplay by Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter, Priest):

According to THR, Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo, Riddick, Total Recall) has joined the cast of Spider-man: Homecoming the Sony and Marvel Studio's reboot of the movie franchise starring Tom Holland as the web-swinging superhero. 

Sources are telling the site that Woodbine will join Michael Keaton and Logan Marshall-Green as a villain. The films plot is unknown but it seems that it will take the character (Peter Parker/Spider-Man) back to his high school roots.

The film also co-starsZendaya, Michael Barbieri, Kenneth Choi, Tony Revolori, Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover and Robert Downey Jr.
