The 2012 remake of Total Recall, often regarded as one of the most disappointing movie remakes in recent memory, will be leaving Netflix on August 31. This modern reimagining of the 1990 cult classic failed to capture the charm and originality of its predecessor, despite boasting a star-studded cast and impressive visual effects. For those still eager to explore the world of Total Recall, the original 1990 version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, remains available for streaming on Paramount+.
Directed by Len Wiseman, the 2012 Total Recall stars Colin Farrell as Douglas Quaid, a factory worker who begins to suspect that he might be a spy after a mind-bending experience at Rekall, a company that implants false memories. The film also features Kate Beckinsale as Quaid's wife-turned-assassin, and Jessica Biel as Melina, Quaids ally in his quest to uncover the truth. Unlike the 1990 original, which set much of its action on Mars, the 2012 version is entirely Earth-bound,...

Director John McTiernan recently revealed how Arnold Schwarzenegger's unproduced Sgt. Rock movie was crushed by John Cleese. According to author Nick de Semlyan's new book The Last Action Heroes (via JoBlo), Sgt. Rock was being developed in 1988 and 1989 with the Terminator 2: Judgment Day actor set to star in the film. However, attempting to cast Cleese in the movie ultimately ended up shutting down the entire project.
The fictional character Sgt. Rock was first created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert. Sgt. Franklin John Rock made his debut in DC Comic's Our Army at War #83 which came out in June of 1959. The character was a World War II American solider who served as an infantry officer and led the unit known as Easy Company. Unlike some other popular comic characters, Sgt. Jost Vacano, honored with a lifetime achievement award this year at the EnergaCamerimage cinematography fest, had his career breakthrough working with director Wolfgang Petersen on the 1981 hit film “Das Boot,” which signified a major success for German cinema. International critics praised the extraordinary innovations of Vacano’s filming, which faithfully recreated the claustrophobic confines of U-boat combat in World War II. To film in the tight, restricted spaces of a submarine, he developed a gyro-stabilized hand-held camera system, which allowed for high mobility – an innovation widely used today. For his “dynamic, disturbing cinematography” in “Das Boot” he was nominated for an Oscar in 1981, then worked with Petersen again on the cult fantasy “The Neverending Story” in 1984.

If we stop and think about the fun cartoons of our childhood, we discover that many had... unusual influences
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Most of us don’t associate kids’ cartoons with the horror genre. Childhood is supposed to be a time of innocence after all, and horror’s heart belongs to darkness. But throughout the years, cartoons and the horror genre have been frequent bedfellows, and animated works featuring ghosts, ghouls, and monsters can be traced back to the early days of the medium.
Making fright fare for younger viewers is necessary. As children, our imaginations were more active and our curiosity was strong. We wanted to learn about the world, but as we began to discover that life wasn’t all teddy bears and candy bars, watching horror-tinged cartoons gave us a safe space to explore our inner fears. Sometimes, though,...

The studio will start principal photography in July. The film will also reunite Diesel with “Fast and the Furious” mega-producer Neal Moritz, who is producing alongside Valiant’s Dinesh Shamdasani. For the great action films – Commando, RoboCop, Total Recall – authority was something to be smashed. Now we favour sickeningly rich superheroes such as the Avengers and Batman
Action films in the 80s and 90s were a special breed. Meat vessels in the shape of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone and Bruce Willis brandished problem-solving M60 machine guns, wiping out scores of faceless goons and dropping devastating puns while doing so. Half of this would happen in slow-motion, illogical explosions would go off at random, and there would almost definitely be a car chase that cost two-thirds of the film’s entire budget. It was magical.
Those were simpler times, better times, when it was just a matter of good v evil, and it was always abundantly clear who the bad guy was because they’d have a maniacal laugh or take hostages or have a cat. But when patriotic heroes weren...

In what sounds like a match made in '80s heaven, Arnold Schwarzenegger has joined the cast of Kung Fury, the feature-length follow-up to the cult 2015 short.

He joins fellow '80s hero David Hasselhoff and Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender, who were announced earlier this week.

“Here and Now” dropped a jam-packed pilot Sunday night, the best episode of its first four. Actually, it’s the only good episode of the first four, and it’s not even good enough to make the rest of the series worth recommending. But it is different. Alan Ball’s HBO series is unlike most family dramas, supernatural dramas, or just dramas in general, and in a landscape of nearly 500 scripted original series, that’s something to savor.
But most people won’t. Most people will flip over to the Olympics or turn on Netflix and see what’s newly available to binge. It feels like “Here and Now’s” time has already come and gone, be it due to the rough reviews or just an overall lack of buzz. In 2018, it’s not good enough to be different; a new show has to be good, too. Actually, shows that...

Seeing as Matt Reeves will be directing Warner Bros.’ upcoming Dark Knight solo film The Batman, fans have generally assumed that he would also be providing the script for the movie. This looked even more sure when Reeves confirmed that he’s disregarding the previous screenplay written by Ben Affleck, Geoff Johns and Chris Terrio – back when Affleck was still attached to direct – and will be starting from scratch. Still, a look at Reeves’ resume reveals that he’s only co-written three scripts in his career, which had people concerned.
Thankfully, it looks like there’s nothing to worry about, as Splash Report is claiming that “sources” have informed them that Reeves will be bringing on board Mark Bomback to complete the screenplay for The Batman. If true, this choice makes a lot of sense.

Coming Soon brings us word that Sony Pictures has released the poster, and trailer, to the new movie Flatliners, the remake of the 1990 Joel Shumacher film which starred Julia Roberts and Keifer Sutherland. The remake stars Ellen Page and Diego Luna. The story centers around five college students who perform a dangerous experiment that tries to prove there is life after death. As each has a unique near death experience, they deal with the sins of their past while also dealing with the consequences of playing with the afterlife.
I am one of the few folks who tries to give remakes a chance. The original Flatliners movie wasn't bad at all. It wasn't a classic of film history, but the premise for the movie was a unique idea. What would happen if people could find a way to prove that there is life after death? What would be the consequences of their actions?...

Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez turned Miller’s graphic novel Sin City into stylish noir for the silver screen over a decade ago, but would a television series be A Show To Kill For?
Networks hungry for old IP seem to think so. Deadline reports that suitors are lining up for a Sin City television adaptation, one that would introduce new characters in that universe.
No network is officially on board yet, but it can only be a matter of time. It's easy to imagine this being a big blockbuster of a show.
The project has picked up steam now that it has Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Len Wiseman (Total Recall), and The Walking Dead's Glen Mazzara behind it.
Mazzura, whose credits also include The Shield and The Omen, is set to write.

Way back in 1979, Ridley Scott’s “Alien” brought us our first genuine female action hero in Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley. Despite the three sequels that followed, Ripley proved to be something of an outlier. Until fairly recently, a woman could kill someone in a movie only if she faced brutal punishment afterward, as in Scott’s “Thelma and Louise,” or in the inevitable fates of Bond girls: They could dole out lethal action, but rarely survived.
Today, ass-kicking women are no longer an anomaly or subject to automatic retribution. This weekend, we watched Scarlett Johansson lay waste to her enemies (although not the box office) in “Ghost in the Shell,” following a path blazed by the likes of Linda Hamilton (“Terminator 2: Judgment Day”), Uma Thurman (“Kill Bill”), and Michelle Yeoh (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”). These roles may strike a blow for equality and diversity, but what these women — and...

Why the Greek director’s tragicomic sensibility is perfect for the subject matter.
Not to be outdone by Netflix’s upcoming string of auteur dramas, Amazon Studios just announced that director Yorgos Lanthimos will be reteaming with The Lobster star Colin Farrell for an upcoming original series. The topic? The Iran-Contra Affair. For those of you (like me) who are too young to remember, the so-called Iran-Contra Affair was a scandal that occurred during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, in which administration officials conspired to sell weapons to Iran (against whom there was an arms embargo) in order to funnel the profits to a right-wing Nicaraguan army known as the Contras (to whom Congress had forbidden funding). The initial plan was to use said profits to negotiate the release of several hostages held by Hezbollah, but then Colonel Oliver North got involved and devised a plan to use the money to also fund the Contras. The last time we saw Kate Beckinsale’s blood-sucking, wolf-slaying, blade swishing Selene she was battling a digital were-blob in a car park at the arse end of Underworld: Awakening: the abominable third sequel which belted the franchise into apparent oblivion. Failing to keep her promise of reclaiming the world from Lycans, made during Awakening’s tepid finale, Selene vanished from our screens. Five years later and following a staggering turn in Love and Friendship, Kate Beckinsale returns, back on autopilot, into her comfort zone and to the role that made her famous. "I always get the shakes before a drop." The Bug War might be making its way back to the big screen, as another adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's seminal science fiction novel Starship Troopers is in the works at Columbia Pictures.
THR reveals that Columbia Pictures has hired Mark Swift and Damian Shannon (2017's Baywatch, 2009's Friday the 13th, Freddy vs. Jason) to write the screenplay for a new movie based on Heinlein's epic tale of responsibility, space marines, and killer bugs from above. The new film is not expected to be a remake of 1997's Starship Troopers or its three sequels, but will instead be a new take on Heinlein's 1959 book.
Matthew Milam will supervise the project, with Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe on board as producers. Moritz and Jaffe also helped bring 2012's Total Recall remake to the big screen, and back when they were promoting that film,...

Kate Beckinsale and her husband Len Wiseman have called it quits.
The Total Recall director filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences, according to TMZ. His court documents purportedly state that he and Beckinsale have both waived any right to spousal support, which suggests there is a prenup, the website reports.
The former couple met in 2003 while working on the first Underworld film together, which Wiseman directed, and they later tied the knot in 2004. The two do not have any children together. Beckinsale has a 16-year-old daughter, Lily, with former partner Michael Sheen.

Much has been written about just how dismal this year’s summer movies have been, but one of the silver linings in such a poor season has remarkably been indies. Where blockbusters like “The Legend Of Tarzan,” “Warcraft” and “X-Men: Apocalypse” failed, indies such as “The Lobster,” “Cafe Society” and “Love and Friendship” succeeded. And while studios were certainly rolling in cash when it came to “Suicide Squad” and “The Secret Life Of Pets,” critics weren’t exactly impressed. It was a rough season for studio films, but it won’t be a total waste if executives can learn from their mistakes and start course correcting. Below, we look towards the indie world in order to offer up the biggest lessons for studio films.

D.J. Caruso had a bit of a moment in the mid-2000s where it appeared he was going to be the hot new director to watch, directing Disturbia and Eagle Eye and being attached to film adaptations of Y: The Last Man and Preacher that never came to pass. But he ended up helming I Am Number Four in 2011 and his career took a big hit. He's on the rise again with xXx: The Return of Xander Cage under his belt for a release next year, but before that, we'll see him tackle a horror movie called The Disappointments Room that he co-wrote with Prison Break star Wentworth Miller.

In a medium founded on expanding one’s imagination and perception of reality, no genre does it better than science fiction. We’ve come a long way from the days when Georges Méliès took us to the moon, for today’s filmmakers look far beyond our universe and into the deepest corners of our soul to reflect the current society.
With the latest entry in the Star Trek franchise arriving in theaters this week, we’ve set out to reflect on the millennium’s sci-fi films that have most excelled. To note: we only stuck with feature-length works of 60 minutes or longer and, to make room for a few more titles, our definition of “the 21st century” stretched to include 2000.
Check out our top 50 below and let us know your favorites in the comments. We’ve also put the list on Letterboxd to keep track of how many you’ve seen.

"We're not completely closed. We're close!"
That's what Justice League producer Deborah Snyder said during a recent set visit in London. She was responding to questions about whether or not the production had cast anyone to play the film's central villain, Steppenwolf, yet.
The production revealed Steppenwolf would be the main villain for Justice League, and a deleted scene from Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice even offered up a glimpse of what the character will look like.
Some were caught off guard by the notion that they hadn't yet cast someone to play such a pivotal role, considering that interview was conducted on the 31st day of production. You had to imagine she wasn't exaggerating when she said said how "close" they were to making a deal, because they kind of had to be.
So who could they get? Warner Bros. has a long, storied history when it comes...

Spider-Man: Homecoming is now shooting, but with every day that passes, the cast continues to grow. The latest addition hasn't been revealed by one of the Hollywood trades, but by a fan who bumped into Fargo star Bokeem Woodbine. He played gangster Mike Milligan there, but is also known for appearing in Riddick, Southland, and Total Recall along with almost countless other TV shows. Who is he playing? Like pretty much every other actor who has been added to the cast lately, we have no idea, though Daily Bugle editor Robbie Robertson feels like a good fit! Of course, there's every chance he could have a very minor role here, possibly playing just a teacher in Peter's high school or something along those lines. Fingers crossed we get an official cast/character list in the near future! Tom Holland, Marisa Tomei, Michael Keaton, and Robert Downey Jr. lead Spider-Man: Homecoming's massive ensemble,...
