“Criminal Justice: A Family Matter,” the courtroom series, produced by Applause Entertainment and BBC Studios India, drew 27.7 million viewers during the January-June period, narrowly edging out Amazon Mx Player’s crime drama “Ek Badnaam Aashram” Season 3 Part 2 (27.1 million) and Prime Video’s beloved rural comedy-drama “Panchayat” Season 4 (23.8 million).

A few days ago, Emraan Hashmi surprised us with a totally new avatar in the teaser of Ground Zero, and now he is promising to deliver a hard-hitting film on Kashmir and its issues with the film trailer! Directed by Tejas Prabha Vijay Deoskar, the film deals with the never-ending problem of terrorism in Kashmir and India’s struggle to deal with the same!

The premise of the film is clear: 70 soldiers lost their lives in yet another terrorist attack in Kashmir, and the officials decided to bring their best man to the mission – Bsf Officer Dubey, played by Emraan Hashmi.

The 2-minute 42-second trailer does not have anything new – it is the regular bomb shots, regular meat chunks scattered on an eerie road in Kashmir after the blast, and an officer getting nightmares as the first-hand witness of the bombing.

After much confusion the Hindi version of the first shot of Ram Charan’s Peddi has arrived and honestly, while I was mighty impressed with the Tamil version, I have my doubts with this Hindi version. The basic plot of the film seems an extension of Aamir Khan’s Lagaan.

The official synopsis of the film on IMDb says, “In 1980s rural Andhra Pradesh, A spirited villager unites his community through sports to defend their pride against a powerful rival.” Now, this is an intriguing plot and even if having its soul in Lagaan, the story still seems powerful.

My basic problem with Peddi’s first shot probably is a huge language barrier. Earlier, most of us watched South Indian films in the 90s with a weird dubbing and accent that did not match with the actor on screen.

This marks the first time the Academy Award-nominated pair has returned to the superhero genre since penning Iron Man, which laid the foundations for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They also are known for an Oscar nomination for work on Alfonso Cuarón on 2006 dystopian thriller Children of Men and have more recently created sci-fi series The Expanse. In March 2022, we revealed they were writing and exec producing a God of War adaptation for Prime Video.

Prime Video’s “Panchayat” Season 3 was the most viewed show in India in the first half of 2024, according to a mid-year report by Ormax Media. The rural comedy-drama yoked in 28.2 million viewers.

Netflix’s “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” secured the second spot with 20.3 million viewers, while Prime Video’s “Indian Police Force” came in third with 19.5 million viewers. Netflix continued its strong showing with “Kota Factory” Season 3 attracting 15.7 million viewers in fourth place, followed by Disney+ Hotstar’s “The Legend of Hanuman” Seasons 3 and 4, with 14.8 million viewers.

In the Hindi-language direct-to-streaming films category, Netflix dominated the top five with “Amar Singh Chamkila” leading at 12.9 million viewers, followed by “Murder Mubarak” at 12.2 million. Sharad said: “Voicing the demon king, Ravan, in the new season of ‘The Legend of Hanuman’ has been a deeply personal journey for me. The show is based on legendary lore, and through this, I have discovered many-layered stories myself, which kept me hooked to know more.”

Indian streamer Disney+ Hotstar is planning a major push into animation content for adults.

The push follows the success of Graphic India’s 3D animation “The Legend of Hanuman,” the third season of which debuted earlier this month to a critical and audience reception that the streamer is happy with. The series is derived from ancient Indian mythological epic “The Ramayana.”

“There are so many stories around around ‘The Ramayana’ that are remaining to be told. We feel that this is a franchise, which has lots of storytelling left, and we want to really scale up and build this world in an exciting manner,” Gaurav Banerjee, head, content, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM (Hindi-language speaking markets) Entertainment Network at broadcaster Disney Star, told Variety.

Disney+ Hotstar is teaming with Graphic India again for another adult animation series, which will be unveiled within the next six months, but it is coy about specific details at the moment.

The creator of ‘The Legend of Hanuman’ Sharad Devranjan has shared that season three depicts the vast energies of Lord Hanuman intertwined with the king Ravan.

Exclusive: Season two of mythological fantasy animated series The Legend Of Hanuman is making waves in the competitive Indian streaming market, having topped all other shows and movies on paid VOD services over the last week, according to Mumbai-based consultancy Ormax Media.

Ormax’s figures estimate that the show has attracted 8.5 million viewers in its first 10 days, a sizable number that puts it right up there with the most successful streaming content in the country over the last year.
