What are the limits of art, of freedom of expression in the case of neo-Nazis expressing anti-democratic views? Can rehabilitation programs reduce crime?

Those are some of the pressing and relevant questions raised by the limited series “Pressure Point” (“Smärtpunkten”), for which Swedish scribe and creator Pelle Rådström is in the running for the Nordic region’s biggest screenwriter award – the Nordic Series Script Award. The three-part Svt series toplining David Dencik, Maria Sid (“All the Sins”), Martin Nick Alexandersson, Einar-Hugo Strömberg and Linus Gustafsson, is helmed by double Berlin Crystal Bear winner Sanna Lenken. Famed for the Netflix thriller “Black Crab,” Rådström goes back in his series to true events that shook Sweden 26 years ago, when its legendary playwright Lars Norén and his producer Isa Stenberg staged the controversial play “7:3” in which the main characters were three long-term convicts, including two neo-Nazis.

There’s Something Going On is based on the popular novels from Martina Haag and features well-regarded Swedish actors Alexandra Rapaport and Ella Hammarsten Liedberg in the dual title roles of Petra. Haag is adapting alongside Peter Arrhenius.

Petra is portrayed at two turning points of her life – the protagonist as a contemporary 50-year-old struggling through a divorce, and as a 15-year-old in the 1980s nearing the end of school while facing up to her own parents’ disintegrating relationship.

Shanti Roney (The Unlikely Murderer), Gustaf Hammarsten (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Jessica Liedberg (Together) and Adrian Macéus (The Truth Will Out) all feature in the film, which explores universal themes of love, angst and the search for oneself.

With its list of new releases for November 2021, Netflix will attempt to bravely step into a post-Squid Game world. Helping it in that mission is a diverse array of original series and films.

On the TV side of things, it’s a good month to be animated with both Big Mouth and F is for Family premiering their fifth seasons (on Nov. 5 and Nov. 25 respectively). It’s the live-action version of an animated classic, however, that might be Netflix’s crown jewel this month. Cowboy Bebop premieres on Nov. 19 and based on the first trailer, it will maintain the spirit of the beloved anime. And speaking of big hits, Tiger King 2 is set to arrive on Nov. 17.

"His story doesn't add up." Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a new true crime series called The Unlikely Murderer from Sweden, about the infamous 1986 assassination of the Swedish prime minister. This will be available to watch on Netflix starting in November, including in the US for anyone curious to learn more about this event. The series focuses on a man named Stig Engström, who passed away in the year 2000. Nearly 20 years later, independent investigators and the police eventually named Engström as the lead suspect, but of course they can't do anything else now that he is dead. This series dramatizes how a man claiming to be a witness at the assassination of Swedish prime minister Olof Palme may have gotten away with murder. Netflix has ordered “The 39 Steps,” a limited series based on the 1915 John Buchan novel that will star Benedict Cumberbatch, with Edward Berger at the helm and Mark L. Smith writing.

The series will reunite Cumberbatch and Berger, who last worked together on Showtime’s 2018 mini-series “Patrick Melrose.” The at least six-hour series will be produced by Anonymous Content, Chapter One Pictures and SunnyMarch, the U.K.-based film and TV production company founded by Cumberbatch, Adam Ackland and Adam Selves.

“The 39 Steps” has already been adapted several times, most famously by Alfred Hitchcock in 1935, starring Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll. Buchan’s original spy thriller takes place just before the outset of World War I, centering on Richard Hannay, a man who comes into possession of a key to a global conspiracy and goes on the run.
