‘We Were Liars’ Gets Promising Update As Prime Video YA Series Awaits Season 2 Renewal Decision
Image
As Prime Video is riding the big viewership wave of The Summer I Turned Pretty’s third and final season, the streamer has renewal decisions to make on three other YA series that premiered in May and June, We Were Liars, Motorheads and Overcompensating.

Overcompensating and We Were Liars already had been looking promising for a pickup. A comment about We Were Liars by Laura Lancaster, Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Co-Productions at Amazon MGM Studios, bodes well for the thriller drama, further boosting the chances of Julie Plec’s and Carina Adly MacKenzie’s adaptation of E. Lockhart’s bestselling book.

While speaking about executive Kara Smith who, along with Tom Lieber, have been given new, expanded roles, Lancaster wrote in an internal memo, “Her extraordinary leadership and innovative vision helped craft The Better Sister and We Were Liars into must-watch series that have captured the cultural conversation.

Is ‘Motorheads’ on Prime Video Renewed for Season 2? Details Inside
Image
Despite its strong reception, Prime Video‘s Motorheads has not been greenlit for Season 2 yet. The high-octane coming-of-age drama quickly became a hit upon its release on May 20, 2025. The series follows teenage twins, Zac and Caitlyn, as they arrive in a rust-belt town named Ironwood with their mother, Samantha Torres.

Ironwood is their parents’ hometown and also the place where their father, Christian Maddox, went missing seventeen years ago. The town is famous for its tradition of streetcar racing, and just like their father, the twins also get involved in that dangerous world in an attempt to fit in with the townsfolk.

The ten-episode series features a cliffhanger ending, which suggests that Christian Maddox might not be dead after all, and Harris, with whom Zac has been feuding, might wind up dead in an ugly car crash.

Cracking the Code: How Prime Video is Quietly Taking the Young Adult Genre Crown
Image
It’s no secret that when we lost The CW and Freeform as we knew them, the last vestiges of Young Adult programming on network TV went with them.

As a result, there have been few series that emerged on network geared towards Young Adults, and if they did luck up and premiere, they weren’t long for this world.

Streaming filled the gap in that regard, with series we could binge to our hearts’ content from Outer Banks to Stranger Things. But there’s one streamer in particular who may have cracked the code in producing YA content that sticks and reaches target demos (Gen Z and women): Prime Video.

(Prime Video/Stephan Rabold)

What’s great is that those behind Amazon and MGM seem very aware of the impact their YA programming has and is leaning further into it rather than pulling away.

By doing so, they may be changing the game,...

Chasing Gen Z: Why Prime Video Is Loving YA After the Genre’s Collapse on Linear TV
Image
It’s been nearly two decades since soapy teen shows like “Gossip Girl,” “Pretty Little Liars” and “One Tree Hill” reigned on the CW and Freeform, but on Amazon’s Prime Video this summer, it’s 2007 all over again. While linear TV has largely abandoned the young adult genre, Prime Video is leaning into it in an attempt to woo Gen Z and millennials with bestseller adaptations and teen drama galore.

It all starts with Jenny Han’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty,” Prime Video’s crown jewel of YA (young adult) programming and streaming hit that’s wrapping up its third and final season this fall. Hoping to grab the baton are “We Were Liars” from “Vampire Diaries” creator Julie Plec and “Overcompensating” from social media comedian-turned-tv writer Benito Skinner, as well as a slew of upcoming TV adaptations of buzzy novels “Fourth Wing,” “Off Campus” and YA series...

I Read We Were Liars After Watching the Show and Honestly I Regret Everything
Image
After binge-watching Amazon Prime’s glossy adaptation of We Were Liars, I finally picked up E. Lockhart’s 2014 novel of the same name. Well, needless to say, I regret ever reading the novel, for it simply lacks the narrative depth that the series delivered. The series does a brilliant job of delivering haunting visuals, layered performances, and expanded emotional arcs, while Lockhart’s book feels narrower and minimalistic in comparison.

Co-created by Julie Plec and Carina Adly Mackenzie, the 8-episode series is about Cadence Sinclair, a seventeen-year-old girl from one of America’s richest families. Emily Alyn Lind’s Cadence is suffering from a traumatic head injury and memory loss after setting her family home on fire and causing deaths.

While the series has made several changes, from the timeline to leaving characters like Taft behind in the books, it elevates the tale with its nuance and depth. Thus, delivering...

Critics’ Conversation: TV’s Summer of Tumbleweeds
Image
Angie Han Once upon a time, when broadcast ruled the roost, summer was a fallow time for TV. The traditional season would end in the spring, to start up again in the fall; it wasn’t that there were no new shows, but they’d be exceptions in a sea of reruns. Of course, that’s all changed in the past couple of decades, with cable and streaming moving the industry to year-round programming. Now there’s always something fresh to watch, whether it’s sweater or flip-flop weather.

Or … is there?

Technically, yes, we still got hundreds of hours of new TV the past few months: starry launches like Apple TV+’s Murderbot and Netflix’s Sirens and Too Much; new seasons of recent hits like Netflix’s Squid Game, Peacock’s Poker Face and FX/Hulu’s The Bear; revivals of older smashes like Showtime’s Dexter (in...

Amazon might not be saying goodbye to The Summer I Turned Pretty after all
Image
It's no surprise Amazon is interested in developing more Young Adult stories from YA author, Jenny Han. After the massive success of The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 release, garnering "25 million viewers in its first 7 days and has reached #1 in over 120 countries," it makes sense to see what else she has planned.

Vernon Sanders, Amazon MGM Studios TV boss, told Variety, he has to "credit The Summer I Turned Pretty for helping us understand what's possible for reaching beyond a YA audience for a YA-centric story, with plenty of older adults now invested in the end of the love triangle."

Young Adult center stories are dominating the top slots on the streaming platform. We Were Liars, Motorheads, and Overcompensating are all performing well with dedicated fans. Hopefully, official season 2 news for all three shows will be announced soon. Thrilling YA-centered stories are gaining traction, thanks to Jenny Han's influence on Amazon,...

We Were Liars Season 2 Gets Optimistic Update Despite No Renewal & Book 2 Tease In Finale
Image
Amazon boss Vernon Sanders has given an encouraging update on the prospect of a We Were Liars season 2 renewal. The hit Prime Video psychological thriller, adapted from the novel by E. We Were Liars fans finally get good news about season 2 from Amazon
Image
Most people turn to Netflix for teen content, but Prime Video is also home to several teen dramas and comedies that have won over audiences. Of course, you have the big one, The Summer I Turned Pretty, which is currently in its third and final season. However, there's also a new Prime Video series that has recently captured the attention of many. It's the psychological thriller, We Were Liars.

If you love books, chances are you've heard of the show's title. It is actually based on E. Lockhart's critically acclaimed 2014 novel of the same name. On June 18, Prime Video released all eight episodes of the first season at once, and the show instantly hooked book fans and new viewers alike from the very beginning. While book fans wanted to see if the adaptation would live up to their expectations, new viewers were drawn in by the show's intriguing mystery.

Amazon TV Boss on ‘Summer I Turned Pretty’ Spinoff Potential and Season 2 Plans for ‘We Were Liars’ and ‘Overcompensating’
Image
Prime Video is celebrating the massive success for the launch of the third and final season of Jenny Han’s “The Summer I Turned Pretty” by asserting this is just the beginning of its long-term strategy for YA dominance.

“I have to really credit this show in particular for helping us really understand what’s possible with these kind of hits,” Amazon MGM Studios TV boss Vernon Sanders told Variety in an interview Monday. And what’s possible is reaching beyond a YA audience for a YA-centric story, with plenty of older adults now invested in the end of the love triangle between Belly and Fisher brothers Conrad and Jeremiah.

“I think in general, when we talk about series for young women, we are talking about shows that center characters of a certain age range,” Sanders said. “But as we see with ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty,’ there’s a...

Prime Video’s YA Frenzy: Head Of TV Talks Strategy With Updates On ‘Tsitp’ Spinoff Potential, ‘We Were Liars’ Season 2, ‘Off Campus’, ‘Fourth Wing’ & More
Image
Prime Video is slowly but surely cementing its authority in the young adult genre.

The streamer’s incredibly popular adaptation of Jenny Han’s The Summer I Turned Pretty returned for its third and final season earlier this month to stellar viewership. From Season 1 to Season 3, the premiere week-audience has tripled.

Tsitp is no doubt a juggernaut for Prime Video that, unfortunately, has to come to an end. But make no mistake, YA will continue to be alive and well at Amazon. In fact, the series returns in the middle of what feels like a moment for Prime Video’s YA slate, which has been growing slowly but surely over the past few years.

The streamer is currently home to titles including We Were Liars, Motorheads, Maxton Hall and Overcompensating, with more on the horizon including Legally Blonde prequel Elle, series adaptations of Elle Kennedy’s popular Off Campus college romance novels,...

I Know What You Did Last Summer Reboot Director Explains Why Legacy Character Didn't 'Return'
Image
This article contains Major Spoilers for I Know What You Did Last Summer.

I Know What You Did Last Summer reunited the original ensemble save for Ryan Phillippe, who missed out on the reboot. Here's why Phillippe's character, Barry Cox, got a shout-out instead of a cameo.

I Know What You Did Last Summer was packed with Easter eggs, including Sarah Michelle Gellar's surprise appearance. Her character died in the 1997 original, but the reboot found a way to bring her back. The same can't be said about Ryan Phillippe's Barry Cox, however. Speaking to People, director Kaytin Robinson said they wanted to include Phillippe's cameo, but there was simply no room for that in the reboot. Producer Neal Moritz also asserted the actor's return in a movie that's already cramped with nostalgia "would have been pushing it."

"It just got to be too much," Robinson explained. "We have a Barry Cox mention.

‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ Og Cast and What Are They Doing Now 28 Years After
Image
Released in 1997, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer‘ became a defining slasher film of its era. Even today, it holds its head high in the genre, despite the sequels that have come out over the years. After all, it’s the Og for a reason.

The film centers on four friends – Julie, Ray, Helen, and Barry – as their lives unravel after a tragic accident one summer night. After the teenagers go to lengths to hide a murder, they become the target of a hook-wielding killer who, as the title suggests, knows exactly what they have done.

Starring the fan-favorite Jennifer Love Hewitt, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ may have received mixed reviews upon release, but it is now considered a nostalgic cult classic among fans of the horror genre.

In just a few days, the story will return with a sequel to ‘I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.

Motorheads season 2 gets concerning renewal update
Image
It's been over a month since Prime Video premiered the coming-of-age drama series Motorheads, and there still isn't word on whether the new fan-favorite will be back for season 2. That's not entirely bad news since a significant amount of time hasn't elapsed, but a new update grows our concern that the wait for an official renewal or cancellation could persist for much longer.

According to TV Line, "it's too soon to be expecting renewal news" about Motorheads season 2, which makes sense given we're only shy of a month over the show's May 20 release date. Still, fellow streaming service Netflix has been known to dish out quick renewals to shows that put up impressive numbers. Motorheads has gained some serious momentum, so what's the hold up?

Motorheads season 2 could still happen on Prime Video

However, it's not all concerning news. The numbers for Motorheads speak for themselves. A week after the...

‘Motorheads’ Josh Macqueen Signs With Innovative Artists Entertainment
Image
Josh Macqueen, a lead in Prime Video’s YA street racing drama series Motorheads, has signed with Innovative Artists Entertainment for representation in all areas.

Macqueen portrays Harris Bowers in Motorheads, opposite Ryan Phillippe. From writer-showrunner John A. Norris, Motorheads is about first love, first heartbreak, and turning the key in your very first car. Set in a once-thriving rust-belt town that’s now searching for a glimmer of hope, the series is the adrenaline-filled story of a group of outsiders who form an unlikely friendship over a mutual love of automobiles.

Macqueen recently starred in Netflix’s Australian YA drama Surviving Summer. On the film side, he recently wrapped a starring role in indie feature Uap alongside Joel Courtney, Celeste O’Connor, Charlie Evans and Amelie Zilber.

Macqueen first gained attention on the drama series Significant Others. He went on to a series regular role in the Australian limited crime...

Per FlixPatrol, Twisters is currently No. 5 on Prime Video's U.S. Top 10 Movies list, sitting just below The Accountant 2, The Accountant, Oblivion, and The Beekeeper, all of whom are making their debut on the list. Coincidentally, No. 8 is where Twisters is currently sitting on Prime Video's Top 10 Overall list for the day, coming in under the series Clarkson's Farm, Motorheads, and The Better Sister and the aforementioned four movies.

Serving as a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster movie Twister, Twisters was directed by Lee Isaac Chung from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith. "Haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado, meteorologist...

Ryan Phillippe Remembers His ’90s Gay Soap Opera Role: Fans Said It Gave Them a ‘Way to Connect with’ Their LGBTQ Children
Image
Long before “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “Godford’s Park” made him a major big screen presence, Ryan Phillippe’s “One Life to Live” character broke ground on television. Phillippe portrayed Billy Douglas between 1992-93, the first gay teenager depicted on daytime TV.

In an interview with People, the “Cruel Intentions” star said that, among the large volume of fan mail he received during his time on the series, many came from parents writing that the character “gave [them] a way to connect with [their] LGBTQ child.” Kids, meanwhile, wrote, “I’ve never seen someone represent me in any entertainment before in my life.”

“As that job progressed, I realized how important it was to some people,” Phillippe said. “And I was only 17 years old, so you don’t really have a sense of that. It was such a different time, but I very much matured through having had...

Ryan Phillippe Opens Up About His Groundbreaking One Life to Live Role
Image
Long before he became known for his roles in Cruel Intentions, Studio 54, and Crash, Ryan Phillippe had a groundbreaking role on One Life to Live. He played Billy Douglas, a gay teenager. Admittedly, Philippe was hesitant about it, but he is grateful for this pivotal first gig.

Soap Opera Past

The former soap star appeared on Oltl from 1992 to 1993. His persona was Billy Douglas, who was the first gay teen on daytime television. Phillippe was only 17 when he tried out for the role. In an interview with People, the Hollywood star recalled it being a “really profound experience” even though he had difficulty with it.

Next: Get these facts about Ryan Philippe.

“I was so young that there were elements of me that were afraid because it was such a different time,” Philippe explained. It was unheard of to see a gay character on a television show, especially on daytime television.

Ryan Phillippe Recalls “Fears” Around Playing Gay Teen In ‘One Life to Live’
Image
More than 30 years later, Ryan Phillippe is reflecting on his groundbreaking LGBTQ role.

The actor recently recalled the “really profound experience” of playing gay teenager Billy Douglas in the ABC soap opera One Life to Live from 1992 to ’93, which resulted in an “almost instantaneous” outpouring of praise from LGBTQ fans.

“I was so young that there were elements of me that were afraid because it was such a different time,” he told People of his tenure in the role.

“I think there were some fears associated with the point in time that we were at and it being before so many walls and ceilings have been broken in that regard,” added Phillippe. “But I know that any fears that anyone had about me doing it immediately went away once I saw the reaction that it got from the people who viewed it.”

Phillippe recalled receiving letters from viewers who said...

Prime Video's New Chart-Topping Series Is Perfect For Fast And Furious Fans
Image
Ever since Ransom E. Olds founded Oldsmobile in 1901, Americans have been wild about cars. With roads stretching every which way throughout the United States, cars gradually became the country's preferred mode of transportation -- especially after the development of the freeway system. The automotive industry in the U.S., born and centered in Detroit, has also long been a symbol of roll-up-your-sleeve American ingenuity. We dream big, work hard, and produce reliable automobiles. And Fords.

The country's romance with cars is amply reflected in film and television. Back in the 20th century, Hollywood knocked out big-ticket auto racing films like John Frankenheimer's "Grand Prix," Lee H. Katzin's "Le Mans," and no less than three Elvis Presley movies centered on motorsports. Filmmakers also introduced the car chase as an obligatory set piece in action movies, which was quickly adopted by television producers for slam-bang series like "The Dukes of Hazzard,...

Motorheads Just Hinted at What Happened to the Dad
Image
Motorheads Season 1 provided a major hint on what really happened to street racer, Christian Maddox (Deacon Phillippe). The new street racing drama from Amazon Prime Video revolves around the story of twins Zac (Michael Cimino) and Caitlyn Torres (Melissa Collazo) as they try to navigate a major shift in their lives after moving to Ironwood, Pennsylvania.

While meeting newfound friends and enemies, there is a deeper reason why the Torres family decided to move to the small town: to find the truth about the disappearance of their missing father, Christian Maddox.

The quest for the truth for Zac and Caitlyn, alongside their mother, Samantha Torres (Nathalie Kelley), places them in a high-stakes unpacking of their father's past. This allows them to discover more of Christian's time in Ironwood, heal wounds by reconnecting with old friends, and create new relationships that will define their future in the local town.

Yellowstone (2018)
Interviews: Ryan Phillippe and Michael Cimino discuss their new Prime Video coming-of-age series Motorheads
Yellowstone (2018)
Most of us are past the age where soapy teen melodramas are our go-to television programming. Sure, we appreciate rich people misbehaving on shows like Yellowstone and Succession, but we turn our noses up at it when we focus on high school-aged protagonists. Many of those shows are not worth the time it takes to watch them, but now and then there is a solid foray into the Young Adult genre. Motorheads is one of those shows.

Led by former teen heartthrob Ryan Phillippe, Motorheads is set in the working-class town of Ironwood, Pennsylvania, where Zac (Michael Cimino) and Caitlyn (Melissa Collazo) return with their mother, Samantha (Nathalie Kelley), after the disappearance of their father. Staying with their uncle, Logan Maddox (Ryan Phillippe), Zac and Caitlyn find themselves getting acclimated to the small town where their father’s notorious reputation sets them up within the cliques. As the truth about the family comes to light,...

New Series and Movies to Stream This Weekend: Lineups Led by Sirens and Fountain of Youth
Image
Netflix, Apple TV+, Max, Hulu, Prime Video, and Starz have loaded the Memorial Day frame with fresh originals, hoping to capture viewers who may stay indoors between barbecues. The mix ranges from Julianne Moore’s limited-series thriller Sirens to Guy Ritchie’s globe-trotting Fountain of Youth and a two-part Paul Reubens documentary on Max.

Early reviews, scheduling data, and industry tracking suggest the long weekend will test audience appetite across adventure, nostalgia, and prestige mini-series.

Netflix Banks on High-Profile Suspense

Sirens arrived on Thursday with five tightly edited episodes and an ensemble led by Moore, Meghann Fahy, and Milly Alcock. The story follows Devon (Fahy) as she tries to pry her sister away from a charismatic, possibly predatory employer played by Moore. Netflix positions the show as its marquee May launch, slotting it beside returning comedy Big Mouth and YA slasher Fear Street: Prom Queen.

Early critical response has been...

Motorheads on Prime Video soars as a complex, nail-biting teen drama (review)
Image
Motorheads was an overnight success, reaching No. 1 in the US on Prime Video, and that doesn't attest to how amazing this show is. I promise the series will surprise you. This coming-of-age show brings together car lovers and young adult genre fans in a format that reminds viewers of timeless stories like The Breakfast Club, Grease, The Outsiders, and Outer Banks. The creator, writer, and executive producer of Motorheads told a viewer that episode 8 is where the series pays homage to John Hughes.

The storyline, friendships, families, and rivalries have a vibe from the '80s to the early 2000s. Between the grungy outfits and town rivalries, the story is a blast from the past. Fittingly enough, the episodes draw from flashbacks from 17 years ago to the present day, from flip phones to smartphones, yet the show doesn't miss a beat in storytelling.

Motorheads Season 1 Recap: Did Christian Return At The End?
Image
Amazon Prime’s latest coming-of-age car action drama, Motorheads, will remind viewers of the initial days of the Fast and Furious franchise, you know, back when those movies still used to be good. The similarities become noticeable from the get-go, as the narrative highlights a community of car nuts struggling to accept change in an overlooked small town, while the focus remains on interpersonal dynamics, aspirations, and the legacy of young leads. Through motifs related to the car and racing, the narrative symbolizes aspects of personal freedom, struggle, and redemption—in a better way than the aforementioned franchise ever could. However, the major drawback the series suffers from is extremely slow pacing—caused by unnecessarily dragging the narrative through ten-in-one-hour-long episodes.

Motorheads Season 1 Review: Rust Belt Roots and Revved Engines
Image
When the camera cuts from sputtering engine backfires to the weathered façades of Ironwood’s main street, you feel the pull of two worlds colliding. The debut episodes of Motorheads set the stage with a flashback: a young Christian Maddox hurtling past cheering crowds, his Charger a blur of chrome and ambition. Cut to present day, and his twins, Caitlyn and Zac Torres, are rolling into their mother’s Rust Belt hometown—leaving Brooklyn’s skyline for empty storefronts and the hum of idle engines.

Their arrival hinges on Samantha’s hope to recapture something she lost long ago, but it quickly sparks questions: Can these teens honor a vanished legend while carving out their own identities? The show tees up two central strands—solving the mystery of their father’s disappearance and grappling with small-town expectations that feel as rusty as abandoned factories.

Motorheads crafts a dynamic blend of teenage drama and high-octane action,...

‘Motorheads’ Review: Ryan Phillippe in Amazon’s Surprisingly Sweet Teen Grease Monkey Drama
Image
There are times in Amazon’s Motorheads, especially during the Neil Burger-directed premiere, when it feels like you’re not really supposed to have been paying attention. Or, at least, when it feels like the show presumes you haven’t been.

Character introductions and plot developments are prefaced by blaring musical cues to let you know in no uncertain terms how to feel. The dialogue is bloated with exposition: “I mean, your dad just lost her,” a girl says to her boyfriend of his own recently dead mother, as if he might have forgotten. And in case none of that might be enough to redirect your attention from whatever TikTok video you were watching simultaneously, the soundtrack is crammed with recently huge, surely expensive hits by the likes of Benson Boone, Teddy Swims and Olivia Rodrigo.

Arguably, such nudges might be useful, even necessary, given it’s likely some...
