Bland, but has room to grow
Controversies aside, the series isn't particularly impressive, but shows potential if given room to grow
The characters are pretty generic, nothing particularly special or unique.
The animation isn't that bad. While I'm not a big fan of the artstyle it doesn't feel like an attack on my senses, and there are some instances where the animation actually feels well done.
The script feels like it was written by an AI that was forced to watch Little Witch Academia, She-Ra and The Owl House, but lacks any of their charm or emotional backbone.
One of my biggest issues I have with the series personally is the tonal whiplash. Despite it's cute exterior, the series has a surprising amount of swearing and bloody violence, much of which feels gratuitous. On top of that the series really drags its feet until the second half, and even then the series can't seem to decide if it wants to be a mature epic or a cutesy adventure.
In conclusion: Does the series deserve all the hate? No, and I'm willing to bet most of the people here haven't seen the series at all.
Should it get a second season? Depends on whether or not the writers can decide what the series should be, and if they can sharpen up the scripts.
