Timeline-wise it takes place in 9 ABY (after the battle of Yavin) after The Book of Boba Fett and season 3 of The Mandalorian.

It's not necessary, but it's recommended you check out The Clone Wars animated movie from 2008 for Ahsoka's introduction and the Clone Wars animated series for her continued journey. It is however, highly recommended to watch Star Wars Rebels, as Ahsoka (2023) is more or less a direct continuation of that story and its characters. While you may not be lost watching Ahsoka, it's much easier to understand the relationships of the characters if you've seen it.

This is detailed in the animated movie and follow-up series The Clone Wars (both released in 2008). The Jedi Council assign Padawan Ahsoka Tano to become Anakin's new apprentice.

(Spoilers for the series) In season 5, Ahsoka gets framed for a crime and the Jedi, except for Anakin, expel her from the order and attempt to apprehend her. Once the truth is brought to light, the Jedi welcome her back to the order, but she refuses and goes her own way. This is why she does not appear in Revenge of the Sith.

The main characters from Rebels that appear are Hera Syndulla, Sabine Wren, Chopper, and Ezra Bridger. Kanan Jarris is mentioned and his likeness is seen in a mural. Zeb does not appear, other than in a mural, but he does have a brief appearance in season 3 of the Mandalorian.

Ahsoka was not a main character on Rebels, but she played a significant role throughout the series. As did Captain Rex (who appears briefly in a flash back)

Grand Admiral Thrawn becomes the main adversary to the group in the Rebels series as well.
