John Carpenter hasn't directed a feature film since the release of 2010's "The Ward," a mental hospital thriller starring Amber Heard. It also came after a long hiatus in Carpenter's filmmaking career, as he hadn't released a film since "Ghosts of Mars" in 2001. His only directorial gigs in the interim were two episodes of the "Masters of Horror" anthology project, released in 2005 and 2006. Carpenter was no longer prolific ... and he seemed to like it that way. He often mentioned in interviews that he was content to compose music at home and while away the hours with video games. He once expressed happiness that so many of his films had been remade as he receives a paycheck for doing absolutely no work. Carpenter is a refreshingly unpretentious filmmaker.
"The Ward," rather bafflingly, came and went in 2010 without much fanfare. Despite Carpenter's status as one of the most celebrated horror directors of his generation,...

The New York Times has marked the 21st century hitting the quarter pole by asking a variety of luminaries for their ten best films of the century so far. One such notable is Call Me by Your Name director Luca Guadagnino. His list features a number of universally acclaimed films...and one big Jason Statham-starring outlier. Among the arthouse fare on the Italian filmmaker's list is Ghosts of Mars, a John Carpenter science fiction horror movie that was both a critical and commercial disaster upon its release in 2001.
Guadagnino's list contains a number of films that you would expect to find on such a ranking, including Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love, David Cronenberg's A History of Violence, and Hou Hsiao-hsien's Millennium Mambo. Back in the mid-2000s, John Carpenter directed two episodes of "Masters of Horror." The celebrated horror anthology series gave a lot of creative leeway to well-known auteurs in the horror world, so each episode was, essentially, a full feature film unto itself. Carpenter's first episode, "Cigarette Burns," was a clever riff on his own 1995 film "In the Mouth of Madness." The episode centered on a twisted film collector (Udo Kier) who tasks a private investigator (Norman Reedus) to track down an ultra-rare film print. The film is said to feature a real-life angel being de-winged, which will cause the person watching it to mentally deteriorate. As a whole, "Cigarette Burns" is pretty dang good, gets some details about film archiving correct, and even features a scene of a man feeding his own intestines (!) into a movie projector.
Unfortunately, Carpenter followed that episode with another one titled "Pro-Life," a curious...

A Look At 8 Films That Nearly Ruined The Careers Of The Makers ( Photo Credit – Prime Video )
Directing a movie sounds glamorous, megaphone in hand, visions of Oscars dancing in your head. But in reality? It’s more like herding caffeinated cats through a minefield. One wrong move, and Hollywood will toss you into the “has-been” pile faster than you can say “creative differences.” Even the most brilliant directors aren’t immune. A single disaster at the box office, and suddenly, your next gig is directing car commercials in Ohio.
Some of the movies on this list came from fresh-faced newcomers; others were from seasoned legends who made one epic misstep. Whether it was a bloated passion project or a tone-deaf misfire, these films didn’t just flop, they nearly sent their directors into career exile. And while a few managed a comeback, others became cautionary tales whispered in studio boardrooms.

April 3, 2025, was the night filmmaker John Carpenter came home…or rather, the day the Master of Horror was recognized for his contributions to film history by finally receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Many a horror fan would argue the moment has been a long time coming for Carpenter. After all, we’re talking about the man who changed the very face of Halloween with the bone-white image of Michael Myers from his groundbreaking slasher, Halloween (1978). He gave us one of film’s most badass rebels in Escape from New York’s Snake Plissken (played by frequent collaborator Kurt Russell). And while it may have underperformed at the box office at the time, his remake of 1951’s The Thing from Another World, simply titled The Thing, is now considered a masterpiece of sci-fi terror that has influenced countless others. Horror maestro John Carpenter hasn't directed in a movie in a decade and a half, but he doesn't consider himself retired. While he still feels great love for filmmaking, he's found himself unwilling to get back on a set again if he has to worry about the budget.
Carpenter discussed his career in a new interview with Variety, coinciding with how the famous filmmaker is getting his name added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He confirmed that he still has no active plans at this time to get back into the director's chair, but clarified that he's still willing to do so once again, albeit under the "right circumstances." Perhaps that means the 77-year-old director isn't through just yet, so as long as it's comfortably funded and stress-free.
"Plans? I don’t know," Carpenter said of his filmmaking future. "I would love to direct again, given the right circumstances.

Iconic filmmaker John Carpenter is just as keen to get back into directing as his fans are to see another movie from him. The director recently chatted with Variety ahead of his upcoming Walk of Fame star ceremony (taking place April 3) and said he'd "love to direct again, given the right circumstances."
Carpenter has directed several classic horror movies, most notably with the 1978 slasher Halloween, but his remake of The Thing has become even more beloved than the original. Some of his other famous films include Vampires, The Fog, They Live, and Escape from New York. He last directed the supernatural thriller The Ward in 2010.
Over 15 years later, and we're still waiting to see what movie he picks to helm next. According to his recent comments to Variety, the main thing holding him back is that he doesn't want to be backed "into a budget anymore," noting that "it's too hard.

It’s now been 15 years since John Carpenter directed his last movie, 2010’s The Ward, but the horror master has been staying busy with music, comic books, and various other projects. Not long after he finally receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this April, for starters, Carpenter is playing music live in both LA and NY, and he’s even agreed to score Bong Joon Ho’s new horror movie. But will Carpenter himself ever return to the director’s chair?
It’s a question the director of horror classics including Halloween, The Fog and The Thing has been asked many times over the years, and Variety is the latest outlet to pop the question.
John Carpenter’s response? Well, he’d have to find the right circumstances.
“Plans? I don’t know,” Carpenter answered when specifically asked if he has any plans to return to directing.

A show as influential as The X-Files stuck a cord with audiences for a reason. Though Chris Carter's occult series was Fox's dark horse at the time, it quickly appealed to the world. The X-Files introduced archetypal characters that would become beloved to its audience for decades to come. FBI Agent Fox Mulder is a believer in the strange and unexplainable, ever since seeing his sister's apparent abduction by aliens at a young age. Searching for her becomes a lifelong obsession, even when the FBI sends a skeptic, Agent Dana Scully, to keep tabs on his comings and goings.

Will that be the case for an upcoming movie called The Housemaid that’s been adapted from a best-selling novel written by Freida McFadden? In a funny twist of fate, John Carpenters most recent film project, 2010s The Ward, is also one of starlet, Sydney Sweeneys, very first. Following the troubled Kristen, played by Amber Heard, The Ward sets up two major mysteries. The first is, why does Kristen burn down the farmhouse? The second is who is the little girl in chains? As with most mystery-heavy plots, the two questions are linked. The little girl in chains is played by Sweeney, who does a lot with little screen time. Sweeneys performance is essential to the overall tone and foundational horror of The Ward. Though critics and audiences alike never fell in love with The Ward, Sweeneys role is worthy of praise, especially considering she was only 13 years old when she landed the role.

Nobody ask John Carpenter to list his Letterboxd top four.

Genre filmmaking legend John Carpenter has recently taken to Letterboxd to write some frank reviews of his own movies and others. The results are incredible.
Having made some of the greatest genre movies ever made, John Carpenter has quite deservedly shifted down a gear or two over the past decade or so. These days, he’s keeping himself busy with his music, playing videogames (he really loves Fallout 76), holding the occasional mercurial interview with the press – and, as it turns out, writing the odd review on Letterboxd.
Brilliantly, as spotted by Twitter’s Haunted Hippie (via our own John Moore), Carpenter has even cast his jaded eye over his own movies. Take Halloween II, for example, which he’s long admitted he wrote for the money. Here’s his Letterboxd review:
They paid me more money than I had ever seen to write a sequel to a film that did not need one.

There's an extremely strong case to be made in favor of John Carpenter being dubbed the master of horror. Although 2010's "The Ward" was Carpenter's last feature film foray into the genre (along with producing the "Halloween" reboot trilogy), the director's diverse oeuvre is profound enough to sustain us for the ages. Sure, every horror-head would love for Carpenter to helm another project, but for now, all we can do is cherish what we have and hope for the best. In the meantime, we can also talk about an underrated horror gem that Carpenter absolutely adores.
When asked about contemporary horror and its ability to scare him, Carpenter told Comic Book that it is hard for him to distance himself from the lens of a filmmaker while watching them, and scrutinize "the plumbing" of modern horror. However, Carpenter considers a film scary if it is able to bypass these instincts...

The central joke of John Carpenter's 1986 martial arts comedy "Big Trouble in Little China" is that the himbo hero Jack Burton (Kurt Russell) thinks he's the main character of the story, when really he's the dorky, comedic sidekick to other people. One should acknowledge that Wang Chi (Dennis Dun) is the true hero of "Big Trouble," and it is ultimately his heroism that saves his fiancée Miao Yin (Suzee Pai) from the clutches of the evil warlock Lo Pan (James Hong). Wang Chi is the one with fighting skills, as well as the one with connections to other magic users. Jack Burton is a silly blowhard with the muscles to fight off bad guys and the know-how of a golden retriever.
Needless to say, "Little China" is quirky and charming. It remains the most whimsical of John Carpenter's output. Indeed, it may be the only comedy film Carpenter directed...

The 1982 remake of The Thing faced harsh criticism but later rose to become a classic horror film, while the 2011 prequel is slowly gaining recognition. The prequel's mix of practical and digital effects disappointed audiences, but its inventive take on the creature's concept has redeemed it in retrospect. Despite not reaching the same heights as the original, the prequel's connection to Carpenter's film and surge in streaming popularity hint at a bright future.
Few horror movies have a more storied history than The Thing, John Carpenter's 1982 remake of the 1951 classic The Thing from Another World. It opened to a vicious critical savaging and terrible box office, which largely proved to be a case of supremely bad timing. Thanks to video and cable airings, its true qualities emerged over time. It's now considered one of the greatest horror movies ever made, and indispensable viewing for anyone who wants to understand the genre.

Bring up the films of John Carpenter to any movie buff worth their weight in celluloid, and once they finish praying in the direction of Bowling Green, Kentucky, they'll start in on the essentials –- i.e. every movie in his oeuvre stretching from 1974's "Dark Star" to 1988's "They Live." From here, they'll single out 1994's "In the Mouth of Madness" as a return to peak form after the disappointing "Memoirs of an Invisible Man," and maybe share kind words about "Escape from L.A." "Vampires," "Ghosts of Mars," and, heck, even "The Ward." But that '74 -- '88 run is considered sacrosanct. You don't dispute this, and if you're fortunate enough to be a working filmmaker, you think long and hard about the wisdom of remaking one of these classics should a studio ever offer you the opportunity.

It's hard to picture two directors as different as James Cameron and John Carpenter. They've worked in similar genres (sci-fi and horror), but their attitudes lie on opposite poles. Cameron, who's famously an intense director, is still in the game and always innovating to make his "Avatar" movies exactly the way he wants to.
Carpenter, meanwhile, is in his "doesn't give an f" era. He's retired (his last film was 2010's "The Ward") because he'd rather play video games and collect royalties. And who can blame him? The man changed the horror game while dropping masterpiece after masterpiece in the '80s (see our list of the best John Carpenter movies here). He's earned time to enjoy the leisurely fruits of his success.

John Carpenter is a filmmaker who boasts several stone-cold classics to his resume. Not only did he more or less invent the modern slasher movie with "Halloween," but he's also responsible for titles such as "Escape From New York," "The Thing," "They Live," "Prince of Darkness," "Big Trouble in Little China," and many more. Carpenter is pretty much retired from feature filmmaking at this point, and his as-of-now final film, "The Ward," isn't so great. However, there's one later-period Carpenter movie that I consider to be one of his best works: "In the Mouth of Madness." It received mixed reviews when it opened in 1994, and it wasn't much of a box office hit, but in my humble opinion, it's pretty damn great — and scary, too.

John Carpenter's 1992 film "Memoirs of an Invisible Man" was a departure for the director. Throughout the 1980s, Carpenter directed many notable genre films that affected a direct and guileless style that roped in many fans and critics. His 1980s "hot streak" included "Escape from New York," "The Thing," "Christine," "Starman," and "Big Trouble in Little China." Although his 1987 film "Prince of Darkness" was nonsensical, it has many defenders, and his 1988 film "They Live" is now considered a seminal anti-establishment punk-rock text of the Reagan era.
That streak seems to have ended with "Memoirs," however. Although the film is slick, entertaining, and boasts some excellent special effects, many Carpenter fans felt a little off-put by the director's attempts to helm a comedic Chevy Chase vehicle. In "Memoirs," Chase plays a stock market guy who is accidentally exposed to an invisibility experiment. The film follows his travails as he adjusts to his lack of opacity,...

In every generation, there is a scream queen–an actress known for starring in horror films who comes to embody the genre landscape of her time. From Janet Leigh and her daughter Jamie Lee Curtis, Sarah Michelle Gellar to Maika Monroe, these women often originate a beloved character or star in a variety of cutting edge films, pushing the boundaries as cinema evolves.
The jury’s still out on which Gen Z actress will ascend to the scream queen throne, but Sydney Sweeney is making a strong case for her legacy. Though not exclusively known for horror, this versatile actress specializes in creating fearsome characters that break the mold set by her predecessors. With her wide eyes and angelic smile, Sweeney has a knack for luring us in with the perception of innocence only to shock us with a cutting remark or withering glare.

Carpenter claimed "circumstances would have to be correct" for him to return to filmmaking, though he continues to deliver amazing scores and invest in horror-related projects. Carpenter's final film was The Ward, a movie that was met with a negative reception from both the critics and the public audience and struggled at the box office; a major contrast from Carpenter's '80s movies. Carpenter is open about the safety net that the Halloween legacy gives him, as every new remake or sequel is beneficial to him.

Horror movies often rely on the clichés and tropes that have become synonymous with the genre, especially when it comes to slashers. Famously, Scream's Randy delivered a series of rules for surviving a horror movie. As a keen film buff and slasher fan, Randy learned how to avoid becoming a victim of a masked killer.
The rules for surviving a slasher may seem strict, but they are key to a character's survival. There's nothing more annoying for horror movie fans than watching a character make a series of foolish decisions that lead to their untimely deaths. Though no rule is entirely foolproof, listening to a few of them might help a character survive.

"Euphoria" and "The White Lotus" star Sydney Sweeney has been having a pretty stellar moment. While the actor has been performing since childhood, her star has been shooting across the sky in the last few years. Just last year, she starred in the thrilling drama "Reality" for HBO and the box office smash hit "Anyone But You," and is kicking off her 2024 by entering Sony's Spider-Man Universe with "Madame Web." But becoming Spider-Woman isn't the only exciting venture on Sweeney's horizon. She's also reteaming with director Michael Mohan once again, this time for the horror film "Immaculate."
With a script by Andrew Lobel, "Immaculate" is a psychological horror film wherein Sweeney plays Cecilia, a nun who is given the opportunity to join an illustrious convent in Italy. Her new home seems absolutely perfect until strange things begin happening around the convent, including what appears to be an immaculate conception.

He may be the greatest horror director of all time (just ask Jordan Peele), but John Carpenter’s film taste skews farther away from the genre than you might expect.
Born in 1948 in Carthage, New York, Carpenter grew up with a love of cinema, watching Howard Hawks westerns an early age, and started making short films with an 8mm camera before he started high school. He studied at Western Kentucky University and University of Southern California, before dropping out of the latter after a short he made, “The Resurrection of Broncho Billy,” won an Oscar.
Now with a sudden amount of prestige, Carpenter made two little seen projects “Dark Star” and “Assault on Precinct 13,” both now critically acclaimed, before really breaking out with 1978’s “Halloween.” Starring a young Jamie Lee Curtis, the independent film became a massive hit, grossing $70 million, turning main villain Michael Myers into a horror icon,...

John Carpenter has shared the news on Twitter that he's set to appear as a guest on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" tonight, marking his first return to the late show circuit in decades. The filmmaker has popped up on late shows before, discussing "Halloween" on David Letterman's show in 1982 and returning to talk to Letterman (by then in Colbert's current "Late Show" post) in 1999. But the horror master isn't a big late show guy, and the pre-21st century Letterman appearance seems to have been the last time anyone saw him give a traditional late show interview aside from an appearance on "The Daily Show" in 2001. Thus, his spot on "The Late Show" tonight is certain to be a rare treat for horror fans eager to hear from the brilliant writer, director, producer, and composer behind films like "The Thing" and "Escape From New York."

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a movie so cold and miserable you feel it in your bones as you watch it.
Pitting a group of U.S. civilians at an Arctic research station against a shape-shifting alien that can convincingly imitate other living organisms, Carpenter's 1982 sci-fi/horror flick notoriously bombed upon its initial release in theaters. Over 40 years later, though, it's now justly regarded as a masterclass in genre filmmaking. With its incredibly gory practical creature effects (which are as gross as they ever were) and bleak-as-hell atmosphere, Carpenter's nihilistic exercise in paranoia has aged far more gracefully than the gung-ho Reagan-era entertainment the masses were flocking to at the time it was made.
As a film ahead of its time that would go on to find a much larger fanbase thanks to home media, it was inevitable that Carpenter's "The Thing" would return in some new form...

John Carpenter explains that his franchises probably won't cross over due to different entities owning the rights to the movies, which could result in expensive lawsuits. Carpenter has kickstarted a few franchises, including Halloween and Escape from New York. At a New York Comic Con panel, the director shared his dislike for the potential legal consequences of incorporating characters like Snake Plissken in a horror movie.
John Carpenter has shared a candid reason that franchises he has started probably won't cross over. At the time of writing, he has directed 18 theatrical features through 2010's The Ward and has only recently returned to directing, helming an episode of the Peacock series Suburban Screams.

A quick and partial mea culpa to Amazon’s Lore, Netflix’s Unsolved Mysteries reboot and several other semi-recent spooky, based-on-fact anthology series to which I gave mixed reviews for general unevenness and because I’d seen the same format used on many superior shows over the years.
It isn’t that Lore and Unsolved Mysteries have suddenly become good shows in my memory. But watching Peacock’s new spooky, based-on-fact anthology series John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams, I was struck by how often episodes had me yearning not for installments of the genre’s top-tier programs but just for the proficient comforts of uneven mediocrity.
Having John Carpenter’s name atop Suburban Screams isn’t wholly symbolic. He co-wrote the series’ forgettable musical theme and he directed one of its six installments. The truth, though, is that affixing the “John Carpenter” brand makes it only worthy of being reviewed,...

One of the most prolific icons in horror, John Carpenter, has returned with the new television series John Carpenter’s Suburban Screams. His new show blurs the line between narrative and documentary as the anthology show interviews the subjects of its terrifying stories. Although the review by our own Alex Maidy states that the series barely exceeds that of a Dateline or Unsolved Mysteries dramatization show, it has the distinction of being directed by Carpenter himself. When it comes to returning to feature films, the horror maestro spoke with the L.A. Times and considered directing again for the right project.
