Film Review: Ballerina (2023) by Lee Chung-hyun
Image
Netflix seems to follow a very specific recipe for his Korean content, movie-wise at least, with the majority of the titles being action-oriented, featuring impressive visuals and at least one star in the cast. “Ballerina”, which premiered in this year's Busan before beginning its rather successful streaming path, definitely ticks all the boxes, being a rather stylish, revenge actioner featuring Jeon Jong-seo of “Burning” and “Money Heist: Korea” in the protagonist role, and Park Yu-rim of “Drive My Car” as the reason behind the revenge.

Click on the image below to follow our Tribute to Netflix

After an intense introductory action scene, as seems to be the rule nowadays, the actual story behind Ok-joo, a former bodyguard and Min-hee, her ex best friend who was found murdered one day, is revealed through flashbacks, as much as the reason for the former's relentless pursuit for revenge. Another friend eventually emerges, but...

Image
With Nam Joo-Hyuk enlisted in the military, we were under the impression that we’d have to wait two whole years to see him again, but here we have a new TV show with the actor as the leading man. The actor is known for his slice-of-life roles that are both adorable and emotional, and he does a fantastic job of balancing pain and humor that really makes you root for him, whatever the role may demand. The actor’s last show was Twenty-Five Twenty-One, which was widely beloved, even though the ending received a lot of backlash for being too realistic. Vigilante will see the mostly romantic actor in a completely new light, and we’re excited to see him try something new. The show is based on a webtoon of the same name and follows a very “Batman” tale, where a young man sets out to take revenge...

The upcoming Korean drama Vigilante is one such example, offering a new perspective on a vigilante who fights criminals both under the law and outside the law. Such concepts aren't new, though, as various superhero TV shows like Arrow and films like Batman have been doing them for years, but it's uncommon to see one from the Korean industry. That being said, here's everything we know so far about the new crime thriller K-drama Vigilante, including the plot, cast, trailer, and release date.

Money Heist's Berlín: Plot, Cast & Everything We Know About The Money Heist Spinoff
Image
Several years after Netflix announced that Pedro Alonso's Berlín would be getting his own Money Heist spinoff, details about the Money Heist's Berlín cast and a potential release have been unveiled. Initially produced by Antena 3 before going to Netflix, Money Heist is a Spanish crime drama that saw a band of criminals try to rob the Royal Mint of Spain. While The Professor (Álvaro Morte) was the mastermind behind the heist, he entrusted his half-brother, Andrés de Fonollosa (otherwise known as 'Berlín') to lead the robbery. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the plan went awry, and several main characters lost their lives, including Berlín.

Although it was a big shock when Berlín was killed at the end of Money Heist's part 2 (after being shot by the police), Alonso was still able to be part of the show as the writers included him in several...

Paramount+ and Tving‘s Korean series “Bargain” has won the critics’ choice award at the Seriencamp Festival in Cologne. In April, “Bargain” became the first-ever Korean series to win best screenplay at the Canneseries Festival in France.

The series stars actors Jun Jong-seo (“Money Heist: Korea”) and Jin Seon-kyu (“Extreme Job”) and is an adaptation of director Lee Chung-hyun’s 2015 short film of the same name. Money Heist Berlin Spinoff Trailer Reveals High-Stakes Jewel Theft
Image
A new teaser for Berlin, Netflix's upcoming Money Heist spinoff show, hints at a new storyline involving a high-stakes jewel heist and reveals the show's release window. Creator Álex Pina's Money Heist first hit Netflix in 2017, quickly becoming a major hit for the streamer. The popularity of the Spanish-language show has led to a spinoff, Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area, which was released last year. Now, Berlin, a spinoff focused on the character of the same name from the original show, is set to expand the world of the series even further.

After previously revealing Berlin's new cast of characters with a brief teaser last fall, Netflix has now shared another look at the second upcoming spinoff.

The brief teaser features Pedro Alonso, who last played Berlin, aka Andres de Fonolloso, in Money Heist season 5, back in action once more planning a new heist. The video...

Lost Star Shares Sweet Reunion Photo
Image
Lost's Daniel Dae Kim shares a sweet reunion photo with a few of his former co-stars. Although the series ended in 2010, Lost hasn't strayed too far from conversations about television in the years since. The sci-fi drama is often credited with helping to popularize the idea of the "mystery box" show, in which viewers tune in every week to find out what the latest twist will be and even to try and solve it themselves. But that only partially explains the enduring appeal of the ABC hit, as a lot of viewers grew deeply invested in the characters thanks to the performances and chemistry of its cast — which led to a divisive final episode.

Kim, who played Jin-Soo Kwon on Lost, reunited with former co-stars Harold Perrineau — who portrayed Michael Dawson — and Josh Holloway, who is remembered for his portrayal of Sawyer. Meeting up over the holidays, Kim shared...

Money Heist: Korea- Joint Economic Area – A Netflix Series: Action, Thriller and Humor
Image
Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area is a South Korean remake of the Spanish hit, La Casa de Papel, starring Park Hae-soo (Squid Game).

The series is directed by Kim Hong-sun (Luca).

Plot

The story takes off in an era when North and South Korea are reunited. A professor gathers a group of talented thieves from both regions to carry out a heist of the recently minted coin.

About the Series

In the recently added episodes we are offered more action than in its predecessor, and a more elaborate production. However, it does not impress in its premise that is quite similar, perhaps, too much.

Ideal for thriller and action fans. This Netflix series is now in its second season.

Netflix Orders Documentary About Bong Joon Ho’s Unreleased First Short Film
Image
Netflix has confirmed production of documentary, Yellow Door: Looking For Director Bong’s Unreleased Short Film (working title), delving into the story behind Parasite director Bong Joon Ho’s first short film, which was seen by just ten people.

While many believe that Bong’s 1994 short White Man was his first production, the doc reveals that his first work was Looking For Paradise, made during his university days in 1992. Filmed with stop-motion techniques, the 22-minute film was screened for ten members of cinephile club, Yellow Door, over Christmas 1992 and has never been seen since.

The Netflix documentary, directed by Lee Hyuk-rae, will also explore the origins of the Oscar-winning artist’s career and an era in Korean cinema when many talented young cinephiles emerged.

Lee interviewed several members of Yellow Door who reminisce about the young Bong, “who obsessively took care of Yellow Door’s greatest asset – its video library”. Produced by Broccoli Pictures Co,...

Global Streaming Is Still Growing, But Starting to Get Squeezed
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Just over a decade after Netflix created the international SVOD market — with the launch of regional versions of its streaming platform, first in Canada, then worldwide — the battle over the future of global streaming has entered a new phase.

According to an Oct. 12 report from Wall Street firm MoffettNathanson, streaming’s penetration in America has hit the saturation point for “nearly every individual service” with the exception of Peacock and Paramount+. If platforms are going to find new customers, they are going to have to come from outside the States. London-based researchers Ampere Analysis noted in a recent report that Netflix commissioned 130 new international first-run shows and 62 features between April and September of this year. Over the same period, Amazon greenlit 92 new shows and 23 features; Disney+, 45 shows and four feature films.

“The overall trend we see is for global platforms leveraging the advantages the international,...

Netflix’s Executive Shake-Up in Europe May Point to Broader Strategic Shift
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Netflix’s shake-up of its European operations — which saw the Sept. 29 exit of International Film VP David Kosse, a new role for Spanish executive Teresa Moneo and a new regionalized hub for all content across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (Emea) run by Larry Tanz — points to a broader strategic shift at the streaming giant toward faster-growing international markets to make up for domestic subscriber losses.

In the second quarter of this year, according to figures from UK-based data research group Ampere Analysis, Netflix ordered 97 new original first-run TV series or movies from outside the US, compared to 63 US commissions over the same period. International commissions at Netflix have outpaced domestic orders for seven straight quarters and show no signs of slowing down. Despite fierce competition from the likes of Disney+ and HBO Max, in international markets Netflix retains a significant first-mover...

Netflix Teases More ‘Hellbound’ and ‘Money Heist: Korea’ at Tudum Fan Presentation
Image
Full and proper confirmation of a second season of mystery horror series “Hellbound” was high on the agenda of Netflix’s consumer-oriented Tudum presentation.

Korean shows have repeatedly achieved top ratings among the streamer’s non-English roster, and last November’s release of “Hellbound” was the show that finally edged aside “Squid Game” after several weeks of breakthrough success.

(The Tudum presentation offered “Squid Game” fans some extra footage that confirmed the identity of the mysterious ‘front man’. Take a look here.)

“Hellbound” is derived from a webtoon created by series director Yeon Sang-ho, who previously directed “Train to Busan” and “Peninsula.” It featured otherworldly angels who emerged to condemn individuals to hell at a specific future time, minutes or years away.

There has been expectation of a second season since mid-June when Korean fan media began to report on casting choices.

Netflix released a video tease on Saturday morning Korean time,...
