My wife and I saw Magazine Dreams (2023) in theaters last night. The film follows a socially awkward young man who has endured a traumatic life and may even be autistic. Obsessed with bodybuilding and determined to become an internationally recognized competitor, he struggles with anger issues, how others perceive him, and his inability to connect with people. As his frustrations with life intensify, so does his rage-until he's bound to break.
Written and directed by Elijah Bynum (Hot Summer Nights), the film stars Jonathan Majors (Creed III), Harrison Page (Lionheart), Haley Bennett (Swallow), Harriet Sansom Harris (Licorice Pizza), and Taylour Paige (Zola).
This film is absolutely brilliant. Jonathan Majors delivers a powerhouse performance, showcasing his immense talent in a raw and emotionally charged role. The story is a gripping character study of mental health, isolation, and the deep desire to be seen and understood. His struggles are brutal, heartbreaking, and difficult to watch, yet deeply compelling. Every scene radiates his frustration, making for an intense viewing experience.
The film is near perfection, though the final 10-15 minutes feel somewhat disjointed, as if the director wasn't entirely sure how to conclude the story. Several moments could have served as the perfect ending, yet it continues past them. While I do appreciate where it ultimately lands, some unnecessary scenes and editing choices slightly disrupt the flow.
In conclusion, Magazine Dreams is a masterpiece that highlights Jonathan Majors' extraordinary talent. I would score it a 9/10 and strongly recommend it.
