The new sports biopic Unstoppable features an outstanding cast led by Emmy winner Jharrel Jerome as 2011 NCAA wrestling champion Anthony Robles. Unstoppable chronicles the remarkable true story and difficult upbringing of Robles, who faced obstacles and challenges both on and off the wrestling mat. Directed by Oscar-winning editor William Goldenberg in his feature film directorial debut, Unstoppable is based on Robles' 2012 book Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated: How I Became a Champion. Goldenberg has been nominated for five Best Editing Oscars, winning for 2012's Argo.
Unstoppable premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 2024 before getting a limited release in theaters on December 6. Unstoppable has received mostly positive reviews, earning a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 75%. Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, and the real-life Anthony Robles produced the film. The Los Angeles premiere of the film was scheduled for January 7, 2025 but was canceled due to the Palisades Fire. Robles remains...

"We can't choose when to be great. We can only hope to be great when it counts." Prime Video has debuted one more official trailer for the sports movie Unstoppable, telling the inspiring true story of one-legged wrestler Anthony Robles. This premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Festival last fall, and it'll be ready for streaming on Prime Video in a more few weeks this January. Starring Jharrel Jerome as Anthony Robles in another outstanding performance - one of my fave actors. Unstoppable is both an irresistible sports drama and a family story full of heart. In wrestling and the locker room, he has to convince his two tough coaches (Michael Peña and Don Cheadle) that his grit and potential are real. At home, he contends with an outspoken and loving mother going through some growing up of her own. Along with Jerome, the cast includes Bobby Cannavale, Michael Peña, the real Anthony Robles,...

Jharrel Jerome rubbed his chin while recalling a phone call with college wrestling champ Anthony Robles. The conversation occurred four years ago as Jerome was preparing to play Robles in the film “Unstoppable” (opening Dec. 6).
“Covid had shut us down in pre-production, and I was giving Anthony words of encouragement that we would tell his story,” Jerome told TheWrap. “I made this promise and told him, ‘As long as I have this baby face on me, I’m going to play you in this movie. Even if I’m 35 years old, I’ll age down.’ And I meant it. When you get to know Anthony, stuff like this becomes really personal.”
Jerome, the star of “I’m a Virgo” and “When They See Us,” was true to his promise and even finished “Unstoppable” before his 30s (He turned 27 in October). Based on Robles’ own sports memoir, the movie traces his journey from high school to college,...

The sports genre can tell every kind of story, from a heartwarming underdog's redemption to a swan song for an aging star or a comedic twist on the sport at hand. With Yassir and Isaiah Lester's The Gutter, the filmmaking duo attempt to strike a chord similar to the likes of the Farrelly brothers' Kingpin and Rick Famuyiwa's Dope, delivering broadly humorous jokes amid a tale of an unlikely bowling superstar. And while they do often find their own unique rhythm, the movie still often largely feels too familiar to fully stand out.

If the name Jharrel Jerome sounds vaguely familiar, it should. The 27-year-old actor made his debut in Barry Jenkins‘ drama film “Moonlight” (2016), and his career has been on an upward trajectory ever since. Following that performance, he appeared in Ava DuVernay’s Netflix miniseries “When They See Us” (2019) and Boots Riley’s limited series “I’m a Virgo” (2023). The rising star’s next role is “Unstoppable,” an underdog sports drama that had its world premiere at the recent Toronto International Film Festival in September (read our review).

Gotham is expanding in “The Penguin” and that means a lot of familiar names, but new faces. In some cases, it means new names too.
Premiering on HBO on Thursday, September 19, “The Penguin” takes place just a few weeks after the events of “The Batman,” but centers on crime boss Oz Cobb — better known as the Penguin. With Gotham effectively in ruins, it’s a race to see who can control the streets, and he thinks his time has come.
That becomes a bit harder, though, when Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone, unexpectedly returns from Arkham Asylum.
We won’t spoil anything, but here are the major players you’ll need to keep up with.

Jharrel Jerome, the voice behind the evil Miles Morales teased at the end of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, says joining the beloved animated franchise is a dream come true. While the live-action superhero genre is having a turbulent time, its animated counterpart is thriving, thanks in large part to Sony's animated Spider-Verse movies. Following Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) after he's bit by a radioactive spider from another dimension, the Spider-Verse movies see Morales, a.k.a. While most are good, at the end of the latest film, Across the Spider-Verse, Morales meets his evil counterpart, who becomes The Prowler.

“I’ve always felt throughout my career that you can always get the audience to a slightly darker place if you tell them a couple of jokes along the way,” says Fallout executive producer/director Jonathan Nolan about the approach and tone the multi-Emmy-nominated Prime Video drama has taken in its debut season.

With several Emmys stalwarts not eligible for nominations this year, it was expected that there would be a number of surprises among the 2024 Emmy nominations.
But while some series and stars broke through, other anticipated nominees from new shows didn’t fare as well as they’d hoped.
Despite a big awards push, Showtime’s The Curse failed to receive any Emmy nominations, with star Emma Stone among the awards hopefuls not nominated. Similarly, the Nicole Kidman-fronted Expats for Amazon’s Prime Video was also left out of this year’s nominations. And HBO’s The Regime only earned one nod, for its costumes, leaving stars Kate Winslet and Hugh Grant snubbed.
Other acclaimed actors who failed to receive nominations include Kelsey Grammer, not nominated for his Frasier revival after the original series was a regular Emmy winner; Abbott Elementary supporting players William Stanford Davis and Chris Perfetti; The Gilded Age...

Once again, the Emmy Awards nominations don’t include a slew of TV favorites. Among the most notable snubs: Emma Stone for Best Drama Actress and a complete shutout of her Showtime series “The Curse.” Equally surprising was “Shogun” supporting actresses Moeka Hoshi and Fumi Nikaido missing the ballot. On the comedy side, Netflix’s “The Gentlemen” missed for Comedy Series and a forecasted bid for its star Theo James. And although “The Bear” had a solid morning overall, Abby Elliott wasn’t able to ride the wave of fortune in Best Comedy Supporting Actress. Oliver Platt and Matty Matheson were also snubbed on the Supporting Actor side.
Below, we enumerate the top 50 Emmys snubs in our estimation. These were the shows and performers that we thought had a strong chance to number among this year’s nominees. Let us know if there are others missing from this list that...

It speaks somewhat to the predictability of the Emmys that one of the biggest surprises in this year’s nominations was the fact that a series that set a new record for comedy nominations in a single year (“The Bear”) wasn’t even more dominant than it was – landing a mere 10 acting bids spread through the lead, supporting and guest comedy categories and missing out on that record of 14 for “Succession.” But beyond that, there were some mild surprises and a few somewhat less mild ones, including the semi-dominant performance of the first-year drama “Fallout” and “Reservation Dogs” finally scoring its first comedy series nom in its third and final season.
Here are a few of the others:

As this morning’s Emmy nominations prove, there may be less TV being made nowadays, but the quality certainly hasn’t declined with the quantity.
As widely expected, The Bear, Baby Reindeer, True Detective: Night Country and Shōgun were mentioned more than once by past Emmy winners Sheryl Lee Ralph and Tony Hale on Wednesday morning. As Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said, “it was an exceptional year in television.” It certainly seemed exceptional that, for the first time in a long while, the names Succession and Ted Lasso were not heard when the nominations were read, as those multiple winners have wrapped up their runs.

Say what you will about Sausage Party, but if you’ve ever wanted to watch a piece of anthropomorphic food call another piece of anthropomorphic food the c-word, or see the denizens of a supermarket aisle engaged in a protracted, graphic orgy, the animated hit is an irreplaceable part of the cinematic canon, putting the “whore” in “hors d’oeuvres,” as it were.
I’m not sure if even the most devoted of Sausage Party fans would say that the comedy had enough material to fill its 88-minute running time (the aforementioned orgy takes up roughly the last third of the film, or maybe it just feels like it does). But are there between 5 and 10 good and clever minutes? Yes, I would argue with some trepidation lest somebody come at me with a stopwatch, there are.
With similar trepidation, I’m prepared to say that there are between 5 and 10 good...

Ah, Emmy season. Does it ever end? The answer is a decisive “no” when it comes to 2024, considering we’ve already held one ceremony and are gamely preparing for a second. So many shows, so many artists, so many choices.
Fear not TV Academy voter. Yes, Emmy ballots are overwhelming. No, it’s not possible to lay discerning eyes on every candidate. But your trusty TV critic is here to help. At the cost of my friendships, physical health, and basic sanity, I’ve spent untold hours watching as much current television as humanly possible, from the highest achievements of imagination to the lowest embarrassments of our middling TV era. Now, I pass that experience onto you, via IndieWire’s 2024 Emmy Nominations Dream Ballot — a guide for voters (and reminder for casual viewers) as to what’s worth honoring among the thinning but still dense TV landscape.
That being said:...

Jharrel Jerome didn’t quite know what he was getting into when he received a somewhat cryptic email from filmmaker Boots Riley early one morning during the 2020 pandemic with the subject line “13-Foot-Tall Black Man in Oakland,” but it was enough to make him jump out of bed.
“For any actor to get a personal message from a director whom you admire saying, ‘I want you for a role,’ it’s a dream,” says Jerome, who plays Cootie in Riley’s fantastical series I’m a Virgo.
The actor was then two years removed from production on his Emmy Award-winning role as Korey Wise in Ava DuVernay’s 2019 Central Park Five miniseries When They See Us, and carefully weighing his options for his next part.

“13-foot tall Black Man in Oakland.”
That’s how “I’m a Virgo” creator Boots Riley pitched his latest show to actor Jharrel Jerome. “This is the wildest title to an email I’ve seen. I don’t know what he’s talking about,” Jerome tells Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast. A week later, Riley was in his hotel room, with a briefcase painting a picture of how this show would look like – and he had mini figurines so Jerome could have a visual.
And yes, Jerome was concerned, he thought he’d be acting in front of a green screen all day long. But that wasn’t the case. Riley — who had the entire show mapped out in his mind, long before the streaming service was involved — wanted to do everything practical and in-camera. As part of that presentation, Riley showed how he’d use specific camera angles and...

For creator, writer, director and co-showrunner Boots Riley, the idea for his Amazon Prime Video series “I’m a Virgo” came from “just wanting to talk about the differences between perception of people and how they perceive themselves.” Specifically, “if you saw a 13-foot-tall Black man walking down the street, the last thing most people would think about is what he thinks about himself, so I wanted to talk about that” and explore “people connecting to each other on a personal one-to-one level, but also on a societal level.”
But how did he turn lead actor Jharrel Jerome into that gentle giant? We gathered Riley and Jerome, along with costume designer Deirdra Elizabeth Govan, production designer Maxwell Orgell and visual effects supervisor Todd Perry for a special roundtable panel to discuss the making of the unique social satire. Watch it above.

While discussing Fallout, Walton Goggins touched on previous comments he made about the increasingly tense and frustrating relationship he had with Timothy Olyphant on Justified. Goggins and Olyphant had a tough time towards the end of Justified, as they struggled with their different approaches to acting. Both actors reminisced on their disagreements, frustrating moments, and how they've ultimately come to mutually respect and appreciate each other.
Walton Goggins is getting a bevy of deserved praise for his performance as The Ghoul in Fallout. A cursory scroll through our YouTube shorts interview with Goggins shows hundreds of glowing comments from the 281 thousand views. It's only the latest in a long line of incredible performances from Goggins including Vice Principles, The Shield, Sons of Anarchy, I'm a Virgo, and Justified. Getting ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Supporting Actor? Be sure to take a tour of our photo gallery that showcases the leading contenders. Reigning victor Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“The Bear”) is generally expected to retain his crown and thus become the 18th man to clinch this particular award more than once and the 13th to do so twice consecutively.
Whereas Moss-Bachrach was his program’s sole featured male nominee last year, he could very likely be joined in the upcoming lineup by three of his cast mates: Lionel Boyce, Matty Matheson, and Oliver Platt. All of said actors have never been recognized in this category before, but Platt has five outside notices under his belt, including a 2023 guest one for “The Bear.”

Are you ready to make your 2024 Emmy predictions for Best Comedy Actor? Before you do, be sure to scroll through our photo gallery showcasing the men who are most likely to earn slots in the 76th annual lineup. Naturally, “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White is widely expected to achieve a second consecutive victory and thereby maintain his perfect Emmys record.
White would be the fourth actor in 10 years to earn this specific award for both of his show’s first two seasons, following Jeffrey Tambor, Bill Hader, and Jason Sudeikis.
The only other 2023 comedy actor nominee in the running again this year is Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”). His costar and 2022 opponent, Steve Martin, is looking to make a comeback, as are six-time contender Larry David (“Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Jon Cryer, who won in 2012 for “Two and a Half Men” and now headlines “Extended Family.”

The current category champ, “The Bear,” is looking to become the 10th series to win this award for both of its first two seasons. It would join “The Phil Silvers Show,” “All in the Family,” “Taxi,” “Cheers,” “The Golden Girls,” “Frasier,” “30 Rock,” “Modern Family,” and “Ted Lasso” on this honor roll.
Of the seven other 2023 Best Comedy Series nominees, only “Abbott Elementary” and “Only Murders in the Building” are eligible to contend again. “Barry” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” officially concluded in spring 2023, while the futures of both “Jury Duty” and “Ted Lasso” remain uncertain. That leaves “Wednesday,” the confirmed second season of which did not air in time to qualify for consideration.

Exclusive: D. Smith, the filmmaker behind the critically acclaimed documentary Kokomo City, which won the Next Audience and Innovator Awards at Sundance 2022, has partnered with Media Res and Brandon Sharp’s Agenda on her next docu project, Blvd, which is said to ask Dr. King the question: Was it just a dream?
Infused with visual poetry, and applying the same innovative techniques and signature style established in Smith’s debut, the genre-bending Blvd aims to show audiences what really connects and divides people from each other and the rest of the country. The film shines a light on Black communities with the aim to tell not just a neighborhood story or a history lesson, but a story about all of who Black people are, here and now.
“Blvd is a raw real reflection of where we are,” Smith told Deadline. “The best way to encourage Black people is to remind them who we are.

Thomas Vinterberg, the Oscar-winning director of Another Round, is turning to television for his next project, signing on to adapt the fantasy novel The Brothers Lionheart as a limited event series for The Morning Show producers Media Res.
Vinterberg will adapt the beloved children’s book, from Pippi Longstocking author Astrid Lindgren together with Tony and Olivier Award-winning British playwright Simon Stephens (The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime). While not as well known outside internationally as Pippi Longstocking, Lindgren’s coming-of-age tale of two brothers, Karl and Jonathan Lion, in the mythical land of Nangiyala, and their battle against the evil tyrant Tengil, is a family classic in Scandinavia and has been translated into some 50 languages worldwide.

Comic book author Brian Michael Bendis has set a first-look deal with Amazon is already developing three TV series under the new pact based on his previous works: “Jinx,” “Murder Inc.” and “Pearl.”
“Jinx” is a crime-ridden love story unfolding on a high stakes treasure hunt, per Amazon’s series description. Our players are: Jinx Alameda, a bounty hunter at the top of her game who’s tired of her grimy life; Goldfish, a charming con man and wanted felon who falls head over heels for Jinx; and Columbia, Goldfish’s loose-cannon partner, who has big criminal dreams. Their paths join when they’re pulled into a search for missing mob money — a payout so big that it lures them away from the familiar streets of Cleveland, into a dangerous, unpredictable misadventure that will change the course of their lives.
“Jinx” is executive produced by Bendis along with showrunners Ayelet Waldman and Michael Chabon.

Emmy and BAFTA nominee Dominique Fishback is set to receive the Culture Certified award at The Creative Collective’s inaugural Creative Class celebration.
The Culture Certified award will honor both established and emerging Black talent and seeks to recognize individuals whose contributions “significantly impact, influence, and shape cultural landscapes at large.” The special award is presented by the Create Collective (Ccnyc) in partnership with Prime Video’s Culture Rated initiative, which champions Black creatives, perspectives, and community across social media, on Prime Video and with in-person events, like CultureCon.
The prize marks the latest accolade for Fishback, who experienced a breakout year in 2023. She earned her first Emmy nomination for her buzzworthy performance as Dre in the Prime Video series “Swarm.” Fishback also earned nods from the Indie Spirit Awards, Gotham Awards, the NAACP Image Awards and more for her transformative work in the psychological comic thriller from co-creators Janine Nabers and Donald Glover.

Arguably the biggest surprise at the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards was the small but loud protest over the ongoing Israel-Hamas war outside the ceremony, the chants from which could be heard inside the tent in Santa Monica and on the livestream on Film Independent’s YouTube channel.
The demonstration was the first to disrupt a major awards show this season.
But as host Aidy Bryant and presenters and winners forged ahead with the ceremony, some acknowledging the protest, there were still some surprises in terms of which films won which awards — or didn’t win.
After seemingly losing its awards momentum with the Screen Actors Guild and Oscar nominations last month, May December could’ve had a big day at the Spirit Awards, as the Todd Haynes film, starring Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, was up for five awards — the same number of nominations received by best feature and director...

Ali Wong won the award for best performance in a new scripted series at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards for her role in Netflix’s Beef, which also won the prize for best new scripted series.
While accepting her first-ever Spirit Award, Wong thanked her co-star Steven Yeun, who was also nominated in the gender-neutral category, as well as the series’ creator Lee Sung Jin and executive producer Jake Schreier. “I wouldn’t be here without you. This is the best. It’s been such a wonderful journey with you guys, and I’m so proud that you guys are my friends, too,” she said.
The comedian also took her speech as an opportunity to give a “special shout-out” to the show’s catering company, Mario’s, playfully noting that her colleagues will “be so mad at me for letting out the secret that they’re, like, the best, but…...
