"The greatest love story of all time, set to the greatest music of our time." That's one of the hooks for the upcoming Romeo and Juliet adaptation from Briarcliff Entertainment, Juliet & Romeo. Briarcliff has set May 9, 2025 (Mother’s Day weekend) as the release date for this bold reimagining of arguably William Shakespeare's most popular play. Joining Briarcliff in bringing this visionary film to the big screen are global independent music powerhouses Lakeshore Records and Broadway Records, in partnership with Hero Entertainment and Rainmaker Films. The synopsis for the film, which seems to be part of a proposed trilogy, reads as follows:
"Set in 1301 at the end of Medieval times, theJuliet & Romeofranchise finds our most famous Star-Crossed lovers turning the tides on the history Shakespeare based his own story on, as they reveal the truth to the very future of the Empire. But the biggest twist in this most beloved of tales,...

Part of what makes Sailor Moon so iconic and enduring in the hearts of fans is its epic romance arc. Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion have a kind of Romeo and Juliet story, meeting a tragic end at the downfall of the Moon Kingdom. However, they are given a second chance when they're reborn on Earth as Usagi and Mamoru, destined to always find each other.
Though this is Sailor Moon's central romance, the franchise wouldn't be what it is without its well-developed side characters. These characters often have romances of their own, to greater and lesser degrees. Even the pairings that don't have as many scenes together form relationships that are still beautifully crafted and compelling, captivating audiences across Sailor Moon's many adaptations.

Broadway seemed to be shedding a bit of winter weight last week as the industry gears up for a busy March and busier April. With two fewer shows on the roster during the week ending February 23 – gone were heavy hitters Romeo + Juliet and All In: Comedy About Love – total grosses of $27,930,129 were off 13.23% from the previous week.
Total attendance for the 26 productions was 231,705, off about 5% from the previous week. The discrepancy between the grosses and attendance percentage drops reflects a lower average ticket price last week – $120.54 – than the $132.29 of the previous week which included the tourist-friendly Presidents Day Weekend.
Two recent arrivals are off to promising starts. Buena Vista Social Club began previews at the Schoenfeld, selling out all three performances for a $447,171 take. The musical opens on March 19.
Another previewing show is Operation Mincemeat, selling out its seven performances at the Golden for a $666,648 gross. Opening night is March 20.

"What's in a name?" William Shakespeare's Juliet once asked. "That which we call a rose, by any other word would smell as sweet." That may be true, as far as it goes, but would an A-List actor by any other name sell as many box office tickets?
An actor's name is their brand, so choosing the right name to attach your career to is of the utmost importance. An actor's name can signal all sorts of things to an audience -- familiarity or friendliness, sexiness or masculinity. Some names signal cultural identity, while others are designed to be as bland as possible so as to avoid drawing the wrong sort of attention from a prejudiced crowd. Actors may even adopt different names for simplicity's sake, or to craft an identity wholly separate from their private lives. With all that in mind, read on to learn about fifteen actors who changed their names for Hollywood.

Recently, the DC Universe — DC Comics' newly retooled cinematic universe — officially came to life with the edgy adult cartoon Creature Commandos. Despite starring DC characters who most people have never even heard of, the series was such a well-made success that its second season was greenlit almost as soon as the first season finale aired. With Creature Commandos Season 2 still a long way off, fans have no other choice but to look to other adult cartoons to pass the time.
Enter Black Dynamite, Adult Swim's animated adaptation of the cult parody movie of the same name from roughly a decade ago. At first glance, Creature Commandos and Black Dynamite have next to nothing in common, let alone crossover appeal between their respective target audiences. After all, one is based on a superhero team's comics, and the other is a parody of the '70s. However, the opposite couldn't be more true.

James Gunn is without a doubt one of the most famous current film directors in Hollywood, especially in the blockbuster realm. In the last few years, his superb and ingenious work with Guardians of the Galaxy confirmed his talent as a filmmaker as well as his flair for the superhero genre. Many of his fans are inevitably looking forward to July, when they will finally be able to see Gunn's latest movie, Superman.
Nevertheless, before dedicating himself to a career as a film director, Gunn started in the mid-1990s as a no less savvy screenwriter. The nowadays recognized artist of the superhero genre wrote cults like Scooby-Doo and the Dawn of The Dead, as well as some innovative TV shows. As a consequence, it is fair to remind fans that there are many unexplored gems that they might not know were written by James Gunn.

Gypsy got back on track and Wicked stayed in the stratosphere during New Year’s week, with most of Broadway’s 33 shows posting strong numbers even while dropping down from the previous (and very lucrative) Christmas week figures.
With Audra McDonald back in action after a week of illness that prompted the cancellation of all but one Gypsy performance, the musical revival played a full eight performances, grossing $1,799,134. That’s up $1,519,039 over the previous week’s single performance.
Wicked, meanwhile, was the Broadway chart’s top earner for the New Year’s holiday week ending January 5. The show’s gross of $3,294,179 bested the #2 earner, The Lion King by nearly a half-million dollars. Wicked, posting huge numbers in recent months, had grossed $5,037,392 the previous week for nine performances, a record high for Broadway.
In its final week, Elf grossed $1,214,945, with 82% of seats filled at the Marquis,...

Olivia Hussey, star of the iconic 1974 film Black Christmas has died at the age of 73 from recurring breast cancer. Although horror fans know her from Black Christmas, she originally shot to fame in Franco Zefferelli’s film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet. She beat out over 500 actresses for that role.
Hussey was only 15 years old when she was chosen to play the coveted role of Juliet, and the adaptation caused quite a sensation. She and her 17-year-old costar Leonard Whiting appeared nude in one scene. Much later in 2022, both of them participated in a $5 million lawsuit against Paramount Pictures, in which they claimed sexual exploitation/harassment and fraud. Zefferelli had initially told them they would wear flesh-colored body stockings for the scene, then changed his mind, promising the scene would be tastefully shot. Ultimately, the case was dismissed.
While most people think of Hussey as being British, she was actually born in Buenos Aires.

The build-up to Christmas is being very generous with Broadway. In some cases, very, very generous. Among the most impressive box office developments last week was the welcome given to All In: Comedy About Love, based on the short stories of writer Simon Rich, read live by such performers as, initially, John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Richard Kind (the cast changes each week).
For the week ending December 15, All In grossed $1,046,514 for five previews. The Hudson Theatre was sold out for the week with a hefty average ticket price of $216.22.
Also doing its best to impress the holiday gods was Elf, joining the rarified $2 million club with a gross of $2,033,784, with 94% of seats at the massive Marquis occupied.
Other shows grossing $2M or more were the usuals: Hamilton, The Lion King, and tireless frontrunner Wicked. Two productions teetered on the $2M brink: Gypsy; and Sunset Blvd..
Solidly on the $1M+ turf were: & Juliet, Aladdin, All In: Comedy About Love, Back To The Future, Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club, Death Becomes Her, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Hell’s Kitchen, Mj, Moulin Rouge!, Oh, Mary!, Suffs, The Book of Mormon, The Great Gatsby, The Notebook and The Outsiders.
Sell-outs for the week were All In: Comedy About Love, Death Becomes Her, Hadestown, Hamilton, Oh, Mary!, Romeo + Juliet, Suffs, The Notebook, The Outsiders and Wicked. Topping 95% were & Juliet, Aladdin, Chicago, Gypsy, Hell’s Kitchen, Moulin Rouge!, Stereophonic, Sunset Blvd., The Book of Mormon, The Great Gatsby and The Lion King.
A couple numbers of note: Swept Away, which recently gave itself a wise two-week extension (to December 29) after posting an early closing, filled 99% of seats at the Longacre. And the excellent Maybe Happy Ending, after initially struggling to find its audience, was at 95% of capacity at the Belasco last week, with a very happy gross of $764,022.
Cult of Love, which opened to generally solid reviews on December 12, filled 91% of seats at the Hayes, grossing $315,283 for two previews and five regular performances.
Another recent arrival, the so-dubbed vaccine comedy Eureka Day, was in previews last week at the Friedman, filling 85% of seats and grossing $230,425. The positive reviews that followed its December 16 opening should spur some box office gains in coming weeks.
Two shows closed last week: The Notebook, filling the Schoenfeld with last-chancers and grossing a hefty $1,094,299, and The Roommate, grossing $501,497 with attendance at 87% of capacity (up from 77% the previous week).
Not sharing in the holiday love were Left on Tenth and The Hills of California, with attendance leaving their respective venues nearly half empty.
In all, the 36 Broadway productions on the boards last week grossed $43,720,381, with attendance at 314,951, both figures more than 38% greater than last year at this time. Average ticket price was $138.82, about $3 greater than last year.
Season to date, Broadway, in the 30th week of the 2024-25 season, has grossed $992,182,392, up about 15% over last year at this time, with total attendance of 7,971,644 also up about 15%.

“Weekend Update” took rapid-fire aim at President-elect Donald Trump and those in his orbit, from Rfk Jr. to Elon Musk to Matt Gaetz.
But of course, “Saturday Night Live’s” faux newscast opened with a bit about the healthcare CEO killer story that has rivited the nation since United HealthCare CEO Brian Thompson was brazenly shot in Midtown Manhattan on Dec. 4. “Weekend Update” anchor Colin Jost noted that the country has been engaged “in the delicate, sensitive debate over who will play this guy in the Netflix miniseries.”
Jost also noted that the while the accused shooter, Luigi Mangione, is suspected of harboring hostility toward corporate America, the facts of the case don’t line up. “Yet he went to Starbucks before the shooting and was caught at a McDonald’s — perhaps his greatest crime was hypocrisy,” Jost said.
Jost and his co-anchor Michael Che then alternated zingers about Trump and his associates.

Almost 10 years after it first premiered, Psych remains one of the most beloved detective comedies, partially due to the premise behind Shawn Spencer's character and his "powers." With a unique spin on the classic police procedural, Psych has stood out with its clever references and comedic timing, even creating several Psych parody episodes based on pop-culture hits like The Shining. Psych is different from other detective shows because it introduced a niche to the procedural genre: a fake psychic solving real crimes.
With likable characters like Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill), Psych has also evolved into a movie franchise. Recently, there have even been rumors that Psych 4 might finally happen. Shawn and Gus' friendship is so well-liked that it is no wonder that they continue to be a popular duo several years after the original show stopped airing. Psych's brilliant casting and fun...

All of a sudden, Trisha Paytas is showing up everywhere.
The 36-year-old creator, who has been a mainstay in the realm of “YouTube drama” for more than a decade, just fulfilled a pair of lifelong dreams: She had a cameo on the December 7 episode of Saturday Night Live and followed up her appearance with the reveal of a benefit show, which will run for a single night at Broadway‘s St. James Theatre.
Paytas appeared in an SNL sketch that poked fun at the cultural hubbub surrounding the annual tradition of Spotify Wrapped results. Episode host Paul Mescal starred as an audiophile whose favorite artist — a fictional oddball named Satoshi Gutman (played by Bowen Yang) — recently had Paytas as a guest on his podcast. In real life, Yang appeared as a guest on Paytas’ Just Trish podcast.
After her trip to late-night TV, Paytas is headed to the Great White Way.

United States Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson will make her Broadway debut – you read that right – with a one-night-only walk-on role in & Juliet, the hit musical comedy in which the female half of Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers survives the Bard’s bloody end and takes a newfound control of her own life.
& Juliet producers say the special appearance will happen during the 8 p.m. show on Saturday, December 14. Immediately following the show, audience members can stay for a talkback with the Justice.
A new ensemble role has been created specifically for Jackson.
In her new memoir Lovely One, Jackson writes about her early love of theater: “I, a Miami girl from a modest background with an unabashed love of theater, dreamed of one day ascending to the highest court in the land—and I had said so in one of my supplemental application essays [to Harvard]. Jason Statham is the star of the outlandish shark movie The Meg, but this is still not the silliest movie he has ever been in. This is on account of Gnomeo & Juliet existing — Disney's whimsical tale that takes inspiration from William Shakespeare's famous play, Romeo and Juliet. The 2011 motion picture is an innovative modern Shakespeare adaptation that retells the complicated story in a way that is engaging for younger viewers. The Meg may truly embrace the absurdity of its plot and defy the laws of logic, but Gnomeo & Juliet is not what audiences expected from Disney's animated movie.
With a star-studded cast, Gnomeo & Juliet turns a silly premise into something hilarious and extremely heartfelt. The comical overtones of the movie are enhanced by Gnomeo & Juliet's soundtrack, which exclusively features songs from Sir Elton John's legendary repertoire, connecting the classic tale to Disney's modern adaptation.

Music from Nsync is featured in the Broadway musical & Juliet and band member Jc Chasez visited the show this week!
The 48-year-old pop star surprised the audience at the performance by getting on stage after the show and treating them to an encore on Thursday night (November 21) at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City.
& Juliet is a multi-generational story of self-discovery, empowerment and love, imagining what would happen next if Juliet hadn’t ended it all over Romeo, and got a second chance at life and love – on her terms. The musical uses songs from Max Martin‘s catalog, including “Since U Been Gone,” “Roar,” “Baby One More Time,” “Larger Than Life,” “That’s The Way It Is,” “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” and many more.
While Nsync‘s song “It’s Gonna Be Me” is featured in the musical, Jc decided to perform “Tearin’ Up My Heart.

Broadway’s hit musical revival Sunset Blvd. stayed strong last week amidst the controversy surrounding star Nicole Scherzinger’s social media post interpreted (or rather misinterpreted) by many as an endorsement of Donald Trump.
The latest Broadway grosses (for the week ending November 10) indicate that Sunset Blvd. was up $134,498 over the previous week. With attendance at the St. James Theatre at 97% of capacity (compared to 95% the previous week), the show’s total gross was a very strong $1,857,562.
In fact, the weekly gross for Sunset Blvd. was the Broadway roster’s third-highest for the week, behind only the usual favorites The Lion King ($1.9M) and perennial top grosser Wicked ($2.5M).
Scherzinger, in case you somehow missed it, set off a backlash last week after posting a response to Maga comedian and accused sexual assaulter Russell Brand, with Scherzinger asking where she, too, could get a red ball cap inscribed with “Make Jesus First Again.

The Sims 5 needs more features in the base game, releasing as a more complete game than The Sims 4. Neighborhoods customization and pre-made families can help give the game depth and pre-built storylines. The Sims 5 should include random events and the return of crimes to make the game more challenging.
The Sims 5 is probably a few years away from being released, especially when the lack of news about it is considered alongside the fact that The Sims 4 is still receiving new content, such as the recent Lovestruck expansion. However, that hasn't stopped some players from creating wish lists for features they want to see as part of The Sims 5 base game. This is a particularly important topic, because The Sims 4 was released without certain features that left a feeling that motivation for money resulted in features being put in expansions instead of the base game.

Oh, Mary!, a sleeper hit if ever there was one, and The Outsiders, a musical so popular that more than 200 people bought tickets last week knowing they wouldn’t get an actual seat, are continuing what can only be described as blazing hot summers.
Consider Oh, Mary!, writer/actor Cole Escola’s campy, hysterically funny period play (flawlessly directed by Sam Pinkleton) about an alcoholic, off-the-rails Mary Todd Lincoln (that would be Escola), her doomed, sneaky gay president husband (Conrad Ricamora) and an amorous acting teacher (James Scully). It was a hit last year Off Broadway, but that certainly doesn’t always translate to Broadway success.
But this time, it did. Oh, Mary! has been selling out for weeks, and has been pulling in more than $1 million a week since July 21. Last week (the week ending August 4) Oh, Mary!, a smallish play with a cast of five and a set that,...

Tony Award nominee Betsy Wolfe, who originated the role of Anne Hathaway in the Broadway production of & Juliet, will play her final performance on October 20, she announced today on Instagram.
“I knew this day would eventually come and it would be a hard one. It is with a heavy, but full heart that I announce my final show at & Juliet will be October 20th, 2024,” she wrote.
“Playing Anne in & Juliet has been a lifelong dream come true. Before this show people would ask “what’s your favorite role” and I’d often say “it hasn’t been written yet.” Then I read the hilariously moving script by David West Read and the rest is history.
I perform every single night with a grateful heart knowing how blessed I am to play the incomparable Anne, alongside my amazing castmates, current and past, and for so long.

James Gunn's earliest project has quietly landed on Shudder. While Gunn is undoubtedly best known for his work in the superhero genre, he started his career with Tromeo and Juliet, an over-the-top take on Shakespeare's classic love story. Gunn was hired to rewrite the screenplay, crafting the finished script alongside Troma icon Lloyd Kaufman, who also directed the film. Gunn also served as an associate director.
Tromeo and Juliet was released the same year that Baz Luhrmann's more mainstream adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, hit theaters. But the two are vastly different films. Tromeo and Juliet (portrayed by Will Keenan and Jane Jensen) is a wildly exaggerated and sexually explicit retelling of Shakespeare's tragedy. Set in 1990s Manhattan, the film follows the titular characters, whose love is forbidden due to a rivalry between their families, the rich Capulets and the poor Ques.

& Juliet, the playful, pop-infused musical that gives Shakespeare’s lovestruck heroine a second chance at life, has recouped its $17 million capitalization, the first new musical of the 2022-23 to do so, and only the fourth new musical to become profitable since the Covid pandemic shutdown.
“We’re so proud to be part of a show that brings so much joy to so many people,” the producers of & Juliet said in a joint statement. “It’s exciting to be part of the theater industry’s continuing recovery, and join a growing list of musicals that have recouped post-pandemic, which is further proof that nothing compares to live theater and the shared experience of human connection. We’re thrilled to continue to share our story of second chances with audiences across the globe.”
The three other new musicals to recoup post-pandemic are Moulin Rouge, Six and Mj. When the Neil Diamond musical...
