Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was first published in 2005 and translated from Swedish into English in 2008, and although the book was the first story to feature the character of Lisbeth Salander, live-action adaptations of Larsson's iconic debut novel and the following sequels have sporadically replaced the leading lady. The original book trilogy proved so successful that other authors have been tasked with adding to the source material's chronology after Larsson's untimely death in 2004. So, while he may not have been alive to see what a huge success his story became, his legacy is inarguable.

Fincher planned a Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy but Sony canceled due to high costs. Alvarez directed a cheaper 2018 sequel, The Girl in the Spider's Web, which underperformed. Despite box office disappointment, Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is still highly acclaimed.
David Fincher's celebrated 2011 thriller The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was supposed to be the acclaimed director's first and only film trilogy. Fincher, who is known for his multiple outstanding movies such as Se7en, Zodiac, Gone Girl, and The Social Network, is still making great films such as 2023's The Killer starring Michael Fassbender. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, and Stellan Skarsgrd, is often considered one of David Fincher's best movies.

Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy was a huge deal in the publishing world. The books kicked off with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". When a book series generates as much heat as this one, the movies come calling. Sure enough, the entire original trilogy was adapted into three films in Sweden. Later, Hollywood took a stab at it, too, with English-language adaptations, but we'll get to those later. First, though, let's talk about the original trilogy and the correct order to watch it.

Noomi Rapace advises Amazon's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series to create something boldly new and unique, not based on past adaptations. Amazon's series plans to invent an original story for Lisbeth Salander, focusing on themes of "female rage" as suggested by showrunner Veena Sud. The upcoming Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series will aim to explore Lisbeth's complex past and make the character its own, setting itself apart from previous adaptations.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo's original Lisbeth actor, Noomi Rapace, shares her advice for Amazon's TV reboot. Stieg Larsson's Millennium series was first adapted into the 2009 Swedish-language film trilogy, which includes The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest – all of which starred Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth. In 2020, it was announced that Amazon was adapting its own television adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo showrunner Veena Sud recently shared that Amazon's upcoming television reboot of Stieg Larsson's beloved 2005 novel will be strong, powerful, and full of "female rage."
Speaking with Screen Rant to promote Hulu's The Stranger, Sud offered an exciting update on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which she boarded as its showrunner back in October. "I have a classic television show coming out for Amazon, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, another angry woman out to get the bad guys and the monsters," she teased. "So, I'm really excited about that, bringing it to television after 15–20 years. It's been kind of in the stratosphere, and there's so much to talk about today that was relevant back then — when Stieg Larsson first published the books, the trilogy — about female rage, about abuse, about the emergence of racism, white nationalism. All of the things, 20 years later,...

If you don’t have the memory of a goldfish (like me), you might remember that Amazon was developing a TV series based on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That was over three years ago, and Variety has now reported that they’ve finally snagged a showrunner for the series.
Veena Sud, best known for developing The Killing for AMC, is set to serve as showrunner on Amazon’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo series. Current details regarding the series are being kept under wraps, but it was originally reported that the project would not be a sequel or continuation of the story from the books or films, but would instead place Lisbeth Salander in today’s world with a new setting, new characters, and new story. Amazon MGM Studios will produce the series with Left Bank Pictures.

Author Stieg Larsson took the world by storm with his Millennium trilogy featuring three novels called The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. These novels were rapidly adapted for the big screen in Larsson's native Sweden, starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander and, consequently, putting the actress in the spotlight. In 2011, David Fincher took it upon himself to recreate the film for an American audience. Fincher's The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo featured a phenomenal cast, including Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, and Christopher Plummer. The film was subject to universal acclaim, winning a number of accolades for its perfection.

If all went according to plan, David Fincher was all set to follow his English-language remake of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo with The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. However, those sequel plans were cancelled when the movie didn’t generate the return the studio wanted.
David Fincher reflected on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo while speaking at the Tribeca Film Festival (via Entertainment Weekly), calling it a “swing and a miss.” Despite not getting to complete the trilogy, Fincher remains very “proud” of the first movie. “We did it the way that we could,” Fincher said. “And when people said it cost too much for what the return on investment was, I said, ‘Okay, swing and a miss.’“

David Fincher looks back on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo with pride, while admitting the movie failed at the box office. Based on the best-selling novel by Stieg Larsson, Fincher’s 2011 thriller starred Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, a tough-as-nails computer hacker recruited by a journalist (Daniel Craig) to aid in the investigation of a decades-old disappearance. Mara herself would go on to score an Oscar nomination for Best Actress, but The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo would ultimately not meet Sony's box office expectations, despite grossing a decent-looking $239 million worldwide on a reported budget of $90 million.
Though The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s box office fell short in the eyes of Sony, Fincher himself says he is proud of what he accomplished with the film, while acknowledging that things didn’t pan out the way everyone hoped given the original book’s status as an international phenomenon.

Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a modern literary phenomenon, spawning a mini-media empire. First published in 2005 in Sweden, it launched the ‘Millennium’ series, which went on to include The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Since then, we’ve seen both American and Swedish movie adaptations, with Noomi Rapace, Rooney Mara and Claire Foy taking turns playing iconic hacker hero Lisbeth Salander.
Now it seems that we’re in for more, as Variety is reporting that Amazon and Sony are teaming up for a new TV adaptation of the property. Fortunately for viewers that might be getting a bit tired of the original stories, the upcoming show is set to break new ground, as it’ll take place in a separate continuity to the books, imagining what Lisbeth Salander would be like in the 2020s.

She only became more popular when Swedish production company Yellow Bird adapted the crime thriller and its two sequels, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet's Nest, for the screen in 2009.
Noomi Rapace plays Lisbeth, a prodigious ward of the state who has poor social skills and a photographic memory, while Michael Nyqvist plays Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist who enlists her help in solving a cold case and later becomes involved in uncovering a government conspiracy in her past.
David Fincher's film of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo wasn't the intended franchise starter. But why not?

It seems Sony Pictures may have found their new Lisbeth Salander in The Crown star Claire Foy, despite reports from March that both Scarlet Johansson and Natalie Portman were up for the role. Claire Foy is reportedly in early talks, but she may not be set quite yet. Insiders claim that, while Claire Foy has in fact been offered the role, there are still scheduling issues that need to be worked out before she can sign on.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that this coveted role went down to both Claire Foy and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Felicity Jones. It's possible that Felicity Jones may be offered the role if these scheduling conflicts can't be worked out, but that has yet to be confirmed. Claire Foy has also been fielding interest to star in Universal's biopic First Man, starring Ryan Gosling as American astronaut Neil Armstrong, although it...

Sony Pictures confirmed yesterday that it is moving forward with the new adaptation The Girl in the Spider's Web, a novel by David Lagercrantz which continues the iconic Millennium Trilogy centering on Lisbeth Salander, written by the late Stieg Larsson. The studio has set an October 5, 2018 release date for the adaptation, with production set to begin this September under the direction of Fede Alvarez. The production is currently looking for the right actress to play Lisbeth Salander. Now, a report has surfaced that two A-list actresses are already in the running, Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman.
Variety's studio insiders claim that both Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman are currently in the mix, as director Fede Alvarez starts meeting with prospective talent. Ironically, Scarlett Johansson was also up for the Lisbeth Salander role for Sony's English-language reboot of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which ultimately went to Rooney Mara, and...

Last November, we reported that Sony Pictures is finally moving forward with a sequel to their 2011 adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, entitled The Girl In the Spider's Web. However, this follow-up was being set up without director David Fincher or stars Daniel Craig (Mikael Blomkvist) and Rooney Mara (Lisbeth Salander). A report surfaced earlier this month that Don't Breathe director Fede Alvarez is being considered for this project, and today the director confirmed that he has signed on, and it will be his next project.
Fede Alvarez confirmed that The Girl In the Spider's Web will be his next project during an interview with ComingSoon.net. The studio decided to skip over author Stieg Larsson's remaining two novels, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest, instead opting to adapt The Girl In the Spider's Web, a follow-up to Stieg Larsson...

Sony is looking to cut costs on the Stieg Larsson sequel and could potentially write Craig's character Mikael Blomkvist out of the movie, says The Hollywood Reporter.
Steven Zaillian has written the script for the movie, which is described as "production-ready". The studio may need to turn to another writer if Blomkvist has to be written out of the picture.
A Craig source allegedly claimed that the 007 star hasn't started negotiations yet and is keen to return for the follow-up.

Just looking at the box-office numbers it wouldn't take a seasoned veteran to realize David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is under-performing considering the rumored $90 million budget and the $60 million it has earned so far. However, with an A CinemaScore from audiences, an 85% at RottenTomatoes and an 8.3/10 rating from IMDb users so far, it would seem a sequel may not be all that bad an idea considering people will also still have time to find the film on Blu-ray and DVD which would mean for much larger potential for the sequel. Not to forget, foreign market totals have just started trickling in where it has made just over $12 million so far. As far as Columbia moving forward with the second film in Stieg Larsson's "Millennium Trilogy," The Girl Who Played with Fire, a spokesman was quoting telling Entertainment Weekly that "development continues" on the sequel and...

There are three books in the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson's "Millenium series" of crime-mystery novels that feature the now-iconic characters Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2005), The Girl Who Played with Fire (2006) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (2007). There are also three internationally acclaimed Swedish movie adaptations based on Larsson's posthumously published novels. As such, it almost seems like a foregone conclusion that Columbia Pictures' The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo — which opens nationwide today — will be the first movie in a trilogy of English-language movie adaptations. Surprisingly, sequels are anything but a given for director David Fincher, who recently told IndieWIRE that "the story is complete" in Dragon Tattoo and he feels no "need" to make sequels.

I have read Stieg Larsson's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "The Girl Who Played with Fire." I also saw all three Swedish adaptations of the Millennium trilogy, including The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest, in theaters. And there are a few things to say.
First, I found the first movie to probably be the best of the trilogy even though I thought the second film did a better job with the Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) character. The third film, however, was so bad it caused me to not want to even read the third book.
Speaking of the books, I enjoyed the two that I read but I wouldn't say they are excellent in any manner of speaking. They are a bit ponderous, but for the most part highly enjoyable and, as is often the case, the books are better than the films. At least in terms of story.

The final film in the trilogy adapted form Stieg Larsson's Millennium series led the specialty market this Halloween weekend. According to estimates provided by Rentrak earlier today, "The Girl That Kicked The Hornet's Nest" debuted on 153 screens to find some very strong numbers for U.S. distributor Music Box Films and Canadian distributor Alliance. Directed by Daniel Alfredson and starring Noomi Rapace as heroine Lisbeth Salander, "Hornet's Nest" grossed $915,044 ...

It is remarkable how just two years ago, few outside of Scandinavia had ever heard of Stieg Larsson or his “Millennium Trilogy” — a series of novels the journalist had been tinkering with at home simply for fun before they were posthumously published. In a staggeringly short time span, both the late writer and his hobby project are now internationally famous, inspiring three Swedish films in 2009 as well as an upcoming American adaptation.
It’s hard to review the third film in a trilogy with a connecting narrative without at least referencing the first two efforts (beware of a few spoilers in the next two paragraphs). Simply put, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was a beautifully shot, disturbing, yet effective mystery. Its protagonists, a left-wing journalist Mikael (Michael Nyqvist) and the titular character, computer hacker Lisbeth (Noomi Rapace), spent much of the film stranded in a hostile environment, surrounded by...
