At its most basic, possession horror exploits the primal fear of losing control over your own person, usually due to a demonic entity. Victims in a possession movie are rendered mere passengers in their bodies as a sinister force takes over and destroys them from the inside. That potent combination of body horror and a complete lack of free will makes for inherently terrifying and fertile ground for exploration. While possession horror is often tied to biblical battles of good versus evil, that’s not always the case.
This week’s streaming picks are dedicated to demonic possession horror titles that leave conventional depictions of faith and exorcisms behind for new terrain and metaphors.

Possession horror tends to take the possession seriously, opting for full-throttle scares and intense emotional or faith-related stakes.

Nearly every culture in the world has contributed to the horror genre at one point or another, but it’s pretty clear that Hollywood is still the de facto capital of genre filmmaking. That’s why it makes sense that most popular horror tropes and monsters are based on traditional western mythology and religions, as these films are usually made by – and meant to appeal to – a certain demographic.
However, dealing with the same old ghouls and possessions can get old after a hundred and thirty years of cinema, and that’s why we’re lucky that some filmmakers decide to incorporate elements from lesser-known cultures into their scary stories. Whether it’s a foreign film daring to apply the “Hollywood” treatment to a local monster or a north American production taking inspiration from international legends (like Bishal Dutta’s recent It Lives Inside), some of the best horror experiences...

In a display of pink visible from outer space, Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” held its lush world premiere on Sunday in Los Angeles.
The Shrine Auditorum, located smack in the middle of the USC campus, was hosed down in colors of blush and bashful for the anticipated Warner Bros. release, which drew the film’s stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.
One notable absence was Noah Baumbach, the film’s co-writer and Gerwig’s partner.
“My co-writer and co-creator, my partner in love and art, Noah Baumbach is not here. He is passionately supporting the fight of the Writers Guild of America,” Gerwig said. “He is a Barbie girl. Nothing in ‘Barbie’ happened without him, and nothing in Hollywood happens without writers.”
The Shrine, once the site of the annual Academy Awards, was packed with Gerwig’s cast of dolls, humans and other brand enthusiasts like “RuPaul’s Drag Race” winner Trixie Mattel and,...

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is off to a fantastic start with reviewers giving it top scores and many of the people who have played it saying that it is a better game than Breath of the Wild. This is an amazing accomplishment as Botw was recognized as not only one of the best Zelda games but possibly among the best video games ever made. As a sequel to such an innovative and enjoyable title, Totk had a lot to live up to.
Our Screen Rant review of Totk, as well as many others, has listed it with a perfect score. Though this doesn't mean it isn't without its faults, it is a must-play game that is well on its way to being Game of the Year for 2023. Botw was 2017's Game of the Year, and many didn't think that Tears of the Kingdom would be able...

“… hideous, machine-like creatures. They are legless, moving on a round base. They have no human features. A lens on a flexible shaft acts as an eye, arms with mechanical grips for hands.” Terry Nation’s script for ‘The Survivors’ (aka ‘The Daleks’ Part Two)
The Daleks, along with Judge Dredd, are fictional fascists beloved by a wide audience. At their heart is a combination of terrifying concept – Nazis who always return (imagine) – with a triumph of design. The greatest Dalek stories tap into this uneasy alliance.
A quick summary of the thinking behind this article:
A. We thought people would enjoy it.
B. If a story features the Daleks in a small cameo role, I’ve not included it. I’ve removed ‘The Day of the Doctor’ and ‘The Time of the Doctor’: it seems silly to rate them based on their Dalek content.

If you asked me to name my favorite horror film franchise, I wouldn’t cite the usual suspects. My go-to slasher is a pint-sized ginger-haired terror in coveralls whose Good Guy exterior hides a killer underneath. Yep, Don Mancini’s “Child’s Play” series has terrified me, dazzled me, and given me many an opportunity to champion its progressive disability politics. So a series based around Chucky navigating Generation Alpha was always going to be my personal catnip, but thankfully it delivers.
Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur) has had a rough go of things. After the death of his mother, Jake’s father, Lucas (Devon Sawa), spends his days drinking and berating Jake for being gay and a loner. Jake wants to be an artist and his recent sculptures have focused on dolls, so when he spies everyone’s favorite possessed plastic creature at a yard sale, it gives Jake the opportunity to complete his latest piece.

This article contains major spoilers for the third episode of “American Horror Story: Double Feature.”
“AHS: Double Feature” is the fifth season of the Ryan Murphy series that Adina Porter has appeared on, and so far it looks like the most tonally level of the bunch — she previously had a one-episode spot on “Murder House,” and starring roles on “Roanoke,” “Cult” and “Apocalypse.” And as “AHS” fans know those last three in particular get pretty dang silly.
“Double Feature,” by contrast, has a much more serious vibe than we’ve come to expect from “AHS,” at least in these more recent seasons. It’s still absolutely bonkers, but there hasn’t been much winking into the camera.
That’s a fact that has surprised a lot of folks, including myself. But it’s not just those of us on the outside who were caught off guard by the change in...

With seven nominations under her belt, it might feel like Sarah Paulson has been all over the Emmys for years. But the frequent collaborator of Ryan Murphy has only dominated a specific section of the awards: the limited series/TV movie categories. This year she has the opportunity to change that.
Paulson won her first and so far only Emmy for her lead performance as Marcia Clark on FX’s anthology series “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” in 2016. However, she has been nominated a total of three times in the Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress category. Her other two bids were for the “Coven” and “Cult” installments of FX’s horror anthology series “American Horror Story.” Paulson’s other four Emmy nominations came in the corresponding supporting actress category and are for her performances in HBO’s “Game Change” as well as the “AHS” installments “Asylum,...

Photo: ‘American Horror Story’/FX ‘American Horror Story’ - The Art Of Fan Popularity The first season of American Horror Story, ‘Murder House,’ released in 2011, engulfing the audiences with its cast, sex appeal, storyline, and connection to real-life horror events and individuals. After the first season, nine followed with ‘Asylum,’ ‘Coven,’ ‘Freak Show,’ ‘Hotel,’ ‘Roanoke,’ ‘Cult,’ ‘Apocalypse,’ and ‘1984.’ The art of the show comes from the connections within the seasons themselves that flow from each storyline allowing audiences to revisit characters along the way. While the storylines themselves can start and end from a later season to an earlier one, the links hold true. The season that physically transports itself to an earlier season is 2018’s ‘Apocalypse’ with connections to the witches from ‘Coven’ and the birth of Michael Langdon from ‘Murder House.’ Also, a big heartfelt hug from the revisit to Violet Harmon and Tate Langdon’s love story ending on a good note.

Ryan Murphy recently announced that fan-fave actress Frances Conroy will be a part of “AHS” Season 10. “Our beloved Frannie is indeed in this season,” the showrunner proudly proclaimed. In anticipation of her return to the franchise, let’s revisit all of Conroy’s best “American Horror Story” characters ever, ranked worst to best. Sarah Paulson is already a Golden Globe winner for “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and now she’s on track to receive another nomination, this time for Netflix’s “Ratched.” She’s one of the top five contenders for Best TV Drama Actress, according to Gold Derby’s predictions, along with Olivia Colman (“The Crown”), Laura Linney (“Ozark”), Jurnee Smollett (“Lovecraft Country”) and Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”). But Paulson possesses a secret weapon the other leading ladies don’t have: Ryan Murphy.

FX’s anthology series “American Horror Story” has received its fair share of Emmys love over the years, including 16 total wins. However, one person that’s cruelly never heard his name called on nominations morning is Evan Peters. The 33-year-old actor has been with “AHS” since day (only missing out on last year’s “1984” installment) and is set to return next year in the still-unnamed Season 10. Simply put, we think the Emmy Awards are dead wrong for snubbing Peters all these years, particularly when it comes to the following four characters. These career-best performances really wowed us and should have raked in the awards for Peters … if only voters weren’t so scared. Agree or disagree with our picks? Keith Raniere was sentenced to 120 years in prison on Oct. 27, the United States Attorney's Office of the Eastern District of New York confirmed on Twitter. The leader of the Nxivm cult was found guilty of federal sex trafficking, extortion, obstruction, and racketeering charges back in June 2019, but his sentencing was delayed several times due to the shutdown of courtrooms resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.
Nxivm was originally founded by Raniere and Nancy Salzman in the 1990s, but a 2017 New York Times investigation uncovered the horrifying truths of the cult. The cult has since served as the focus for two documentary series: HBO's The Vow, which premiered in August, and Starz's Seduced: Inside the Nxivm Cult, which premiered in October. Clare Bronfman, one of Nxivm's financial backers, was sentenced to 81 months in September, while former members Salzman, Allison Mack, and Lauren Salzman are still awaiting sentencing.

At the height of her fame as the country's new sex symbol following Transformers, Megan Fox chose to appear in Diablo Cody's 2009 offbeat horror-comedy Jennifer's Body alongside Amanda Seyfried. The movie was panned upon release but has since come to be regarded as something of a cult classic, especially in the LGBTQ+ community. In an interview with Collider, Fox expressed happiness that people are finding a new appreciation for the film, even if it took longer than expected.
"That, obviously, is overdue. We were all aware of what we were making at the time that we were making it. We were all taken aback - and we meaning me, Karyn [Kusama], Diablo [Cody], and the main players - by how the studio marketed that movie, which was outrageous, and by how it was received. I can't sit there and watch that movie and not be like, "This is a fucking hilarious,...

The historical collaboration launched in 2018 via Film Fund Luxembourg and the Canada Media Fund takes new momentum. In Autumn 2017, Luxembourg signed an agreement with Canada to stimulate audiovisual co-development and co-production. This historical measure then featured a total investment of €1.2m made available to businesses on both sides of the Atlantic. Between 2018 and 2019, the Fonds des Médias du Canada (Fmc) and Film Fund Luxembourg (Ffl) have thus joined forces allowing for the financing of seven projects. The initiative, aimed at television works and feature-length animations, also targeted the sectors of augmented and virtual reality, transmedia projects, as well as innovative technologies – areas of expertise particularly well developed in two countries. The series Cult...

Jodie Comer, Martin Freeman, Tamsin Greig, Kristin Scott Thomas and Imelda Staunton are among the stars lined up for new BBC One adaptations of playwright Alan Bennett’s acclaimed “Talking Heads” monologues, which start filming Tuesday.
Ten of the original pieces are being remade, having first aired on BBC Television in 1988 and 1998, winning two BAFTA awards. Two new monologues, written by Bennett last year, are also being filmed.
The contained nature of Bennett’s monologues means they are one of the very few dramas that can be produced while following guidelines on safe working practices during Covid-19. Filming is taking place at BBC Elstree Studios using existing sets.
They are produced by former National Theatre artistic director Nicholas Hytner’s London Theatre Company and ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’ producer Kevin Loader.
Lead director Hytner, whose film credits include “The Madness of King George” and “The History Boys,” said:...

The BBC has dusted off British playwright Alan Bennett’s famous series of Talking Heads monologues and is remaking them for the coronavirus age with a head-turning cast.
Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer, Sherlock‘s Martin Freeman and the soon-to-be star of The Crown Imelda Staunton are among those attached to the project, which will breathe new life into the BAFTA-winning show that ran for two seasons in 1988 and a decade later in 1998.
Talking Heads will be produced by London Theatre Company for BBC One, and overseen by Bennett’s long-time collaborator Sir Nicholas Hytner, who staged shows including The History Boys. The plan is to make 12 episodes, 10 of which will be monologues filmed for the original series and two new stories Bennett sent Hytner last year.

A long list of issues contributed to Fallout 76‘s tepid debut in 2018. While the game suffered from poor balancing, glitchy mechanics, and an incredibly ill-advised microtransaction system at launch, no issue was as glaring as the lack of NPCs with which to interact with, a key element of the Fallout franchise stripped away seemingly to encourage players to make their own fun.
Bethesda’s intention with Fallout 76 seemed to be to breathe new life into the franchise by creating a post-apocalypse populated solely by real-life players. Perhaps the studio hoped that this would connect the game’s community in a new way. But the concept backfired. Instead of making Fallout feel more alive, replacing NPCs with real players made Fallout 76’s Appalachia feel isolating and lifeless. The game was depressing and lonesome to play, and anything good the title had going for it was marred by this issue.

Celebrated writer/director Marielle Heller has lined up her first project since 2019’s Mr. Rogers biopic “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” According to a new report from Deadline, Heller will re-team with that film’s financier, Big Beach, for “Five Women,” a limited series centered on a serial sexual harasser and his effects on his female employees. Heller will direct the series, based on an episode of the NPR show “This American Life.”
The announcement of the new series arrives as the Harvey Weinstein trial deliberations are underway in New York City — and the #MeToo response that followed the outing of Weinstein as an alleged sexual predator in the fall of 2017 inspired the March 2018 episode of the podcast. “Five Women” tells the story of several disparate women connected by the boss who sexual harasses them in the workplace. Fans of “American Horror Story” agree Frances Conroy is the show’s secret weapon, with a versatility that ranges from a witty fashionista to the Angel of Death. There is a quiet intensity to many of Conroy’s performances that makes her one of the show’s most captivating cast members. It all began in Season 1 with Moira O’Hara, a ghost maid who appears as her seductive younger self to straight men with wandering eyes while presenting as herself to everyone else. She earned an Emmy nomination for the role, ultimately losing to her onscreen sparring partner Jessica Lange. Check out our photo gallery above to see all of Conroy’s “Ahs” characters ranked worst to best.

Academy Award winner Kathy Bates has become a staple of FX’s “American Horror Story,” especially after the exit of fellow Oscar winner Jessica Lange. Bates first appeared alongside Lange in the third season of “American Horror Story,” titled “Coven,” as racist socialite Delphine Lalaurie. The monstrous role won her a Primetime Emmy Award, defeating two of her co-stars in the process. The actress returned for Season 4, “Freak Show,” where she played bearded lady with a Baltimore accent, Ethel Darling. She came back to lead Season 5, “Hotel,” as Iris, the manager of the Hotel Cortez. These two seasons would earn her Emmy nominations. Evan Peters, alongside Sarah Paulson, has become a staple of the “American Horror Story” franchise to the point that it was jarring to see him not appear in the show’s most recent season, “1984.” Audiences first obsessed over Peters’ presence in the first year of “Ahs” as Tate Langdon, a sociopathic teen with a sensitive side, especially when it came to his love for Violet (Taissa Farmiga). In the next three seasons, we would see Peters portray misunderstood characters like inmate Kit Walker in “Asylum,” frat boy-turned-Frankenstein creation Kyle Spencer in “Coven,” and freak show performer Jimmy Darling in “Freak Show.” Tour our photos above to see all of Peters’ “Ahs” characters ranked worst to best.

*full disclosure: an online screener was provided by the film's pr' firm. Direct: Chad Archibald. Writer: Jayme Laforest. Cast: Nina Kiri, Ry Barret, Jorja Cadence, Nina Richmond and Will King. Black Fawn Films is likely the biggest Canadian indie horror film producer. This film company has completed at least eight titles, in just a few years. Their latest is titled The Heretics and it was written by Jayme Laforest, who also wrote 2015's Bite. Both films deal with body horror and a female protagonist. This title incorporates one of the worst sex scenes, in recent film history. Always say no to demon sex, no matter how attractive the offer is. The story, within the film, deals with the birth of a demon - Abaddon and his desire to end the world. Similar to Jon Knautz's The Shrine (2011), characters are overcome through possession. In The Heretics, this reduces the protagonist's ability to resist evil.
