What If ‘The Virgin Suicides’ Felt More Like a Cursed Object? Try the Feverish ‘Honeycomb’ for Summer
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark honors fringe cinema in the streaming age with midnight movies from any moment in film history.

First, the Bait: a weird genre pick and why we’re exploring its specific niche right now. Then, the Bite: a spoiler-filled answer to the all-important question, “Is this old cult film actually worth recommending now?”

The Bait: Even Canadians Were Kids Once

We’re in the muggy middle of summer, but After Dark is coming at you from the Great White North. I’ve been in Montreal since Tuesday, and while my reporting on international affairs is generally pretty limited, I’m happy to confirm things truly are better in Canada. Getting off the airplane and stepping onto the tarmac, my restored human rights hit like a G-force, and after an excellent breakfast this morning, I’m confident New York would lose to Quebec...

'Elsbeth' and 'The Good Wife' Creators Are Already Working on Their Next Drama Series
Image
Robert and Michelle King have been great partners with CBS and CBS Studios for years. The couple has worked together on numerous projects throughout the years, with Elsbeth being their latest one airing on the network. CBS is looking to extend this relationship for the foreseeable future. The network has opened up a writers' room for The Kings' new drama series, Cupertino. The network has ordered scripts for twelve episodes, and if everything works out well, Cupertino will be on the network's schedule in the 2026-2027 TV season. Much about the show is unknown, but it is described as "a David vs. Goliath legal show set in Silicon Valley." The Kings will executive produce alongside Liz Glotzer.

The Kings' relationship with CBS started with the drama series The Good Wife, which aired from 2009 to 2016. The legal drama starred Juliana Margulies, Matt Czury, and Josh Charles, among others. The couple returned...

Remember the Lighter Side of David Lynch with His Slapstick Short ‘The Cowboy and the Frenchman’
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, read the Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, try the Bite: a breakdown of the movie’s ending, impact, and any other spoilers you’d want.

The Bait: A Lynchian Language Barrier and a Break from Sadness

To steal from a popular meme this week, January has been the longest year of the month.

With Los Angeles still burning in the background, David Lynch died a few weeks ago — from complications of emphysema at 78 — and Hollywood went into sudden and deep mourning. Even against a steady stream of more bad news, tributes to the late filmmaker are still going strong.

From “Eraserhead” to “Inland Empire,” the beloved director was a quintessential and divisive voice of midnight movie culture, one whose surreal embrace of...

Freaky Farmers Take Down Skiers, Swingers, and a Slew of Motorists in the Extra Chunky ‘Motel Hell’
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

In October 2024, we’re doing the Midnight Movie Monster Mash with films that challenge our understanding of evil characters and creatures just in time for Halloween.

First, read the spoiler-free Bait: a weird and wonderful pick from any time in film. Then, come back for the Bite: a breakdown of all the spoiler-y bits you’d want to unpack when exiting a theater.

The Bait: A Genre Cannibal Comedy Worth Preserving — Maggots and All

Measured against classics like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and contemporary farmhouse fare like “Pearl,” “Motel Hell” is no blue ribbon winner. Still, this outrageously funky genre blend — a pitch-black horror comedy about screwy siblings turning motorists and motel guests into scrumptious jerky — deserves its a special spot in the greater midnight movie pantry.

From swingers seeking bestiality to an inexplicable hypnosis sequence,...

Spectrum Originals Shutting Down, Several Shows in Limbo
Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union in Los Angeles: Bad Girls (2019)
Charter Communications is shutting down Spectrum Originals, the home of shows such as L.A.’s Finest and Joe Pickett, as the media company moves away from its original programming plans. As first reported by Deadline, the decision to shut down the premium cable channel comes as Charter’s former Head of Original Content, Katherine Pope, is leaving to become President of Sony Pictures Television Studios. A Spectrum representative told Deadline that it will be a gradual process as the company explores options for its various series in the coming weeks and months. Spectrum Originals launched in 2019 with the Bad Boys spinoff L.A.’s Finest starring Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union, which NBC had passed on. Since then, the network has picked up shows such as the Mad About You revival, Paradise Lost, The Bite, and the neo-Western Joe Pickett, which has become Spectrum’s top-rated series and was recently renewed for a second season.

Spectrum Originals to Shut Down, Leaving Several Shows in Limbo
Image
The TV landscape is losing another source of original content: Spectrum Originals, which produced series like L.A.’s Finest and the Mad About You revival for Spectrum cable subscribers, is shutting down, according to our sister site Deadline, with parent company Charter Communications scrapping all of its original programming plans.

The move leaves several current Spectrum series in limbo, including neo-Western Joe Pickett, which is billed as Spectrum’s top-rated series ever and was renewed for Season 2 in February, and sci-fi thriller Beacon 23, starring Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey, which has already been renewed ahead of its series premiere.

Spectrum Originals to Shutdown as Charter Gets Out of Scripted Programming
Image
Charter is phasing out Spectrum Originals as the cable provider moves out of the original scripted series space, Variety has confirmed.

The move comes after it was reported that Spectrum Originals head Katherine Pope would be leaving the company to take over Sony Pictures Television from Jeff Frost. Pope is due to begin her new role in the coming weeks, at which time Charter will begin to phase out the Originals division.

Spectrum Originals first launched in 2018 with the acquisition of the “Bad Boys” spinoff “LA’s Finest” starring Jessica Alba and Gabrielle Union after the show was not picked up to series at NBC. Since then, Spectrum Originals has aired shows like the revival of “Mad About You,” “Joe Pickett,” “The Bite,” and “Paradise Lost.”

The shutdown will be a gradual process, sources say, as there are still several shows in the pipeline at the platform. Those include the Lena...

Paramount+ will continue to be Evil.

Spotlight on ‘Evil’: Special roundtable panel with Katja Herbers, Mike Colter, Aasif Mandvi, Robert King, Michelle King [Watch]
Image
“Evil” is so much more than its one-word title suggests, but it almost defies description. It’s a creepy-as-hell, addictive blend of supernatural horror, character study, outrageous humor and subversive satire, with some raunchiness and profanity thrown in, presented with the trademark acerbic wit that we’ve come to expect from top-of-their-game hubby and wife creators Robert King and Michelle King.

See over 400 interviews with 2022 Emmy contenders

The genre-bending drama is led by Katja Herbers as the skeptical Dr. Kristen Bouchard, Mike Colter as priest-in-training David Acosta and Aasif Mandvi as sardonic every-man Ben Shakir, who examine the origins of evil along the dividing line between science and religion. The dysfunctional trio investigate the Catholic Church’s backlog of unexplained mysteries, including supposed miracles, demonic possessions and hauntings. Their job is to assess if there is a logical explanation or if something truly supernatural is at work, often coming up against the devious Dr.

Audra McDonald Discusses Broadway’s Return, A Potential ‘Good Fight’ Musical Episode, and ‘The Gilded Age’ During Series Mania Keynote
Image
When Audra McDonald was nine, she was offered to play “the little Black servant girl” in a production of William Gibson’s “The Miracle Worker.”

McDonald desperately wanted the part, but her parents stepped in and refused.

“They said no, it’s a demeaning role, you don’t have to do that, there are other roles you can do. You may not be happy with this now, but one day you’ll understand that you don’t have to perpetuate that stereotype. I was furious at the time, but boy do I understand it now,” McDonald said.

The legendary Broadway actor recounted the anecdote (one she’s previously shared) and revealed how her parents’ decision has “played into a lot of my role choices” during a wide-ranging keynote conversation at Series Mania.

Having accepted the festival’s first ever Etoile Award, which honors an international star in the TV industry,...

The BBC Studios Showcase will take place online for a second time in 2022 amid continued uncertainty over international travel during the pandemic. The event takes place February 28-March 2 and will spotlight shows including Frozen Planet II and Blue Lights, the comedy-drama from The Salisbury Poisonings creators and writers Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn. BBC Studios said this year’s virtual Showcase was the best attended in history, with more than 1,400 buyers taking part. ‘Evil’ Renewed for Season 3 at Paramount Plus as Robert and Michelle King Sign New Deal With CBS Studios
Image
“Evil” is here to stay. Accompanying the announcement Thursday that Robert and Michelle King have extended their five-year overall producing deal with CBS Studios for their King Size Productions, the company has renewed “Evil” for a third season at Paramount Plus.

In May, ViacomCBS announced that the second season of “Evil” would move from CBS to Paramount Plus, which ViacomCBS relaunched in March (it was previously CBS All Access). The show revolves around the investigations into demonic activities (or are they?) by Catholic Church assessor David (Mike Colter), forensic psychologist Kristen (Katja Herbers) and tech-guy skeptic Ben (Aasif Mandvi) — and the evildoing of their gleefully nasty foe, Leland Townsend (Michael Emerson).

With the first three episodes of “Evil’s” second season available to stream, “This season is already one of the service’s top acquisition drivers, with viewership growing week over week compared to the first season,” stated a CBS Studios press release.

Robert & Michelle King Ink Massive New Five-Year Overall Deal With CBS Studios
Image
The Good Fight and Evil creators Robert and Michelle King are staying at their longtime studio home, CBS Studios. But this was not a straight-forward overall deal renewal. The big new five-year pact, said to be in the high eight figures with a potential to cross the nine-figure mark in success, came after months of negotiations.

It was touch and go for awhile with multiple suitors pursuing the prolific duo, including Universal Television, I hear. In the end, CBS Studios stepped up to keep two of their top creators in the fold, extending their tenure to 17 years.

Under the new agreement, CBS Studios will continue to have exclusive rights to produce content created by the Kings through their King Size Productions banner across all platforms. Liz Glotzer remains president of King Size Productions.

The Kings have successfully juggled multiple series for most of their 12 years to date at CBS Studios.

2021 Emmy awards nominations ballot: See the 133 Best Drama Series hopefuls from A (‘Absentia’) to Y (‘Yellowstone’)
Image
TV academy voters are faced with a daunting task when they fill out their 2021 Emmy Awards nominations ballot in that they have to consider 133 shows for Best Drama Series. On the bright side, the amount of entrants is down by 66 from last year, and members no longer have to winnow their choices down to just 10 favorites. As with the last several years, they are being told to “Vote for as many achievements in this category that you have seen and feel are worthy of a nomination.”

Last year’s champ, “Succession,” will not return to defend its title, as no new episodes of the HBO series have aired since its second season finale in October 2019. Of its seven rivals last year, four — “Better Call Saul,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark,” and “Stranger Things” — also did not return in time to meet the eligibility window of June 1, 2020 to May 31, 2021. The remaining three — “The Crown,...

Emmys 2021: Significantly Fewer Shows Submitted After Pandemic’s Production Slowdown
Image
The effects of the Covid-19 pandemic have been felt far and wide, with the latest being on the nominations-round ballots for the 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards.

The total number of submissions are down significantly across most categories. The drama series race sees 133 contenders, while the comedy series race sees 68 titles on the ballot and the limited series/anthology category has 37 programs on the ballot. Last year, drama series came in at a whopping 197, while comedy had a strong showing at 111 and limited series came in at 41. A category where submissions are up for the first time in a long time is TV movie, which sees 41 nominees this year (compared to last year’s 28).

Interestingly, Spectrum Originals “The Bite,” from creators and showrunners Robert and Michelle King, ended up submitting in the drama series category, despite originally being developed as a limited series. The Kings did recently tell Variety that...

The ‘Hamilton’ actors most likely to earn Emmy bids for their non-‘Hamilton’ performances, ranked
Image
First they conquered Broadway, now they’re trying to take over television too. Several of the stars of the Tony-winning musical “Hamilton” currently spend their days moonlighting on your TV screens as aeronauts from the country of Texas in fantasy shows on HBO and former girl group members in new comedies on Peacock. This means that, with the filmed version of “Hamilton” is also eligible for this year’s Emmys, many of the musical’s stars now have multiple opportunities to earn recognition.

However, we’re not concerned with whether or not they will be nominated for “Hamilton” right now. Rather, we want to know which of these talented actors and actresses could earn bids for their other work. So we’ve taken a look at all of the odds and ranked the “Hamilton” stars from those most likely to receive an Emmy nomination to least likely, based on their new TV roles.

If Covid Isn’t Scary Enough, Robert and Michelle King Add Zombies and Deliver ‘The Bite’
Image
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Bite,” available now on Spectrum on Demand platforms.

Five years ago, Michelle and Robert King created and executive produced a political satire entitled “BrainDead,” in which extraterrestrial insects began to crawl inside the ears of government officials and begin to take control of their words and actions. Since then, the prolific television scribes watched as science became politicized, especially amid the Covid-19 pandemic, and despite already having two ongoing drama series (“Evil” and “The Good Fight” for Paramount Plus) to run, they were inspired to step back into the world of satire with “The Bite.”

Written, produced and set during the pandemic, “The Bite” is centered on New York neighbors Rachel (Audra McDonald) and Lily (Taylor Schilling) who end up tasked with saving the world when a zombie virus emerges. That’s right, zombies. In addition to a global pandemic.

Spectrum’s ‘The Bite’: TV Review

Evil Season 2: EPs Tease That a Main Character Will Seek Exorcism — But Maybe Not the One You Think
Image
Evil ended its first season finale with a beelzebub-ian bang: Kristen Bouchard, the forensic psychologist/religious skeptic played by Katja Herbers, was burned by a crucifix in her hand — a sure sign of demonic possession. (Go here to refresh yourself about what else happened in the ep.)

And while we don’t yet know what that development will mean for Kristen when the drama returns to CBS for Season 2, on Tuesday the show’s creators/executive producers let TVLine in on some of the devilish delights afoot in the forthcoming season premiere.

The Bite: Covid Creates Zombies (?!) in Trailer for Robert and Michelle King's Upcoming Spectrum Satire — Watch
Image
Great news for fans of CBS’ short-lived BrainDead: Robert and Michelle King are bringing similar sci-fi absurdity to The Bite, their satirical Covid drama premiering Friday, May 21 on Spectrum.

(“Zombies are fictional,” Steven Pasquale’s CDC doc says in the trailer below, but we’re not sure how else he’d explain the virus’ thrashing, purple-faced victims.)
