Joseph Gordon-Levitt made bold choices with his feature debut, Don Jon, previously titled as the misleading Don Jon’s Addiction. Sure, he made a crowd-pleaser out of a potentially dark concept – something we don’t see often from the indie film world – but, as a filmmaker, Levitt took some chances. Not only did go about doing so by shooting on 35mm, but also with a few broad, committed stylistic flourishes. We see the world through Jon’s eyes — who is a self-centered, narcissistic Jersey boy — so at first the film is shot like the most expensive, high-production value porno you’ve ever seen. Once the character’s journey comes to an end, gone is all the cheesy club music and camera whips. It’s a heightened aesthetic that lets an audience know exactly what Don Jon is from the beginning. We spoke with Levitt here about Don Jon‘s style, along...

Over the past decade he has been a mainstay at the fest – his burgeoning film career as an indie actor can be cited with these showings: Manic (2001), Rian Johnson’s Brick (2005), Gregg Araki’s Mysterious Skin (2004), (500) Days of Summer (2009), and Hesher (2010). On the creative side, Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s short Sparks (Sundance ’09) and his hitRECord project have been unveiled as well. Logically his feature film directorial debut Don Jon’s Addiction should receive a huge Eccles premiere. Gordon-Levitt plays the lead (see set pic above) while Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Brie Larson co-star.

As years go, 2012 is shaping up to be The Best Ever for at least one Hollywood multi-hyphenate. In April, EW has confirmed that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will step behind the camera for his feature directing debut in an untitled comedy starring Gordon-Levitt as a ladies man attempting to reform himself. The actor also penned the original screenplay, and will co-star with Scarlett Johansson. (Deadline first reported the story.)
The news comes as Gordon-Levitt is set to star in four high profile feature films this year: The Dark Knight Rises, the Manhattan bike messenger thriller Premium Rush, the sci-fi thriller Looper, and Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt might only be 30 years old, but he has already distinguished himself as an actor with a wide range. Beginning in commercials as a young child, he made his film debut in 1992′s Beethoven, but it wasn’t until 1996 that he became a household name, co-starring in the television sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. After a hiatus during which he attended Columbia University, Gordon-Levitt left television for film acting, and ever since, his career has continued to grow year after year. Levitt has been one of my favourite upcoming actors of the past decade, starring in some of my favourite indie films. Of course there are many reasons to love Jgl. I could mention his gorgeous slanted smile, his dark wavy hair or his noirish and intense eyes – I mean, this dude even looks hot in drag (see above photo). But with that said, lets instead focus on his film career.

There have been quite a few adaptations of Elmore Leonard's novels over the years, but there was a particularly noteworthy run in the mid to late-'90s (thanks largely to Quentin Tarantino) that included Jackie Brown, Get Shorty and Out of Sight. Now Leonard's work is coming back yet again with such recent endeavours as John Madden's Killshot, the FX series Justified and Joseph Gordon-Levitt's short film Sparks. We've also got another one of his books heading to the big screen soon courtesy of writer/director/actor Charles Matthau. As you can probably tell from the picture, he is the son of the great Walter Matthau, and the book he has chosen to adapt is the 1988 bomb revenge caper Freaky Deaky. According to Variety [1], Matthau will direct from his own script with William H. Macy attached to star. The plot revolves around a young couple who were...

Because Joseph Gordon-Levitt was only 14 when he first sprang to prominence as the alien trapped in a teenager's body on the NBC comedy "3rd Rock From the Sun," it's easy for audiences to feel familiar with him. Still, few could have predicted that the engaging young actor would soon be turning in complex, nuanced performances like the violent mental patient in the 2001 indie "Manic" or the homosexual prostitute in 2004's "Mysterious Skin." And certainly no one expected it to happen so fast; by his mid-20s, Gordon-Levitt had become the go-to actor of his generation for demanding portrayals of troubled young men. He slipped right into the heightened style of Rian Johnson's modern-day film noir "Brick," as a high school student investigating the death of a girlfriend, and won raves for his portrait of a brain-damaged would-be bank robber in "The Lookout." He lightened up considerably in last year's action hit "G.

Why are we so thankful for Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel in 2009? Simple. The duo redefined the "cute couple" with their cool characters in "(500) Days of Summer." They almost made us forget about all the generic rom-coms and recycled relationship tropes regurgitated onto movie screens over the past year. We salute them for their originality, their willingness to take risks and their joyful, affecting, truthful portrait of love and loss.
Recently, Gordon-Levitt and Deschanel stopped by the MTV News offices to chat about their on- and off-screen bond, their other successful projects this year and what we can look forward to from them in the future — including a possible reunion on the big screen.
