After a groundbreaking first season that seemed to herald the coming of a new era for TV animation, "Arcane" has come to an end. It seems it really was a dream to have animated shows with the quality and production values of feature films without also requiring budgets so big that no studio — even a giant gaming studio — would want more than two seasons at a time.
Still, we'll always have "Arcane" and the truly astonishing work studio Fortiche did in translating the uber-popular "League of Legends" video game into an epic animated show with impeccable visuals, vast worldbuilding, and memorable characters. Season 2 clearly suffered from the show's cancellation, the pacing faltering due to what was obviously a 5-season plan being condensed into just two seasons, forcing many plotlines to be dropped or severely shortened — like the lives of many a character. Still, even if the ending of season 2 was underwhelming,...

In an exclusive interview with Collider, Tartakovsky revealed that his Adult Swim series will likely come out sometime in 2025, though he didn't reveal an exact date. When asked how far along the new season is right now, he said, "I'm finishing up the tenth episode right now, and so we got 10 more half-hours. We're in production, and it's gonna blow everybody's socks off, I think."

In the world of modern adult animation, one of the names you hear the most is Genndy Tartakovsky. While initially starting out making cartoons for younger audiences, such as Dexter’s Laboratory on Cartoon Network, he began to explore more mature forms of storytelling with later series, such as Samurai Jack and Sym-Bionic Titan, until eventually doing more exclusively adult-oriented work, such as Primal and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.
But one other series the director is known for is the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated mini series, which ran on Cartoon Network from 2003 – 2005. It was the first piece of animated media to show that era of the franchise before its successor series in 2008. This was all before Star Wars was acquired by Disney, of course.
However, he revealed that he pitched another animated series to another company, one that would also eventually fall under the Disney umbrella.

Fixed is back on the prowl following Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to drop the completed film.
The animated movie from director and co-writer Genndy Tartakovsky is no longer getting a release from Wbd, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. A co-production between Sony Pictures Animation and New Line, the feature was set up by the AT&T-owned WarnerMedia before the 2022 merger that led to David Zaslav running Wbd. Fixed was initially planned for release on the streaming service that was then known as HBO Max.
Wbd worked with Fixed’s team to cover production costs and enable the filmmakers to find an alternate buyer. Rights for Fixed have reverted to producer Sony, which is shopping the project.

The Annecy Animation Festival, the most important eight days of the year for the global animation industry, wraps up tonight, so we’re looking back at 10 themes that dominated the dialogue around this year’s event.
Annecy is Hollywood’s Favorite Animation Showcase
In interviews held before this year’s festival, several representatives from Hollywood studios, speaking on background, told us that Annecy has now replaced Comic-Con as their most important promotional event of the year for animation.
During a backstage interview with Variety at a “Transformers: One” panel, festival artistic director Marcel Jean explained that building that reputation wasn’t a quick or easy process. “It’s a long-term work to convince the studios that Annecy is a place to be for them,” he said. “I think we are building a very strong relationship with Paramount, and it’s the same with most of the studios now.”

Annecy, France — Michael Ouweleen, president of Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Adult Swim, a major force behind the rise of adult animation, has signalled at Annecy the company’s intention to ramp up its presence in Europe and international markets at large.
“We very much want to see Adult Swim originals coming from anywhere in the world,” Ouweleen told Variety at the French festival.
The stars are aligning for the overseas drive.
In the U.S., Adult Swim is on a roll. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Adult Swim saw greater primetime growth among 18-49s than any other major cable network. It bowed the top three new animated series on cable in 2023: “Unicorn: Warriors Eternal,” “My Adventures with Superman” and “Royal Crackers,” Cartoon Brew noted.

"Dexter's Laboratory" changed the course of American TV animation. Like "Flapjack" after it, the cartoon gave many future legendary animators their start in the industry, from Craig McCracken and Butch Hartman to Rob Renzetti and one Seth MacFarlane. It also helped transform "The Powerpuff Girls" into a timeless hit.
The show started as a short in "What a Cartoon!" before becoming the very first Cartoon Cartoon. The man behind the show, Genndy Tartakovsky, has made hit after hit in a variety of genres and tones, from his influential "Star Wars: Clone Wars," to the devastatingly gory R-rated animated carnage of "Primal" or complex genre-bending tales of steampunk goodness like the criminally underseen "Unicorn: Warriors Eternal."
Much of Tartakovsky's style can be traced back to his work in "Dexter's Laboratory," from his use of silence to tell stories to his eye for iconography and imagery, along with his knack for pop culture references.

Genndy Tartakovsky has been a revolutionary voice in the world of animation, creating some of the most celebrated cartoon shoes on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. Popular shows of the 2000s including Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, Sym-Bionic Titan, and recent entries like Primal, and Unicorn: Warriors Eternal were his creations.

His ongoing show Primal has been a big hit on Adult Swim. The visionary creator/ director drew a lot of inspiration from some of the cinematic greats like Star Wars and Sergio Leone films. Interestingly, Tartakovsky based the behavior and mechanics of the dinosaur Fang in his show on how Max Fleischer’s Superman carried himself in the 40s animated show.

Genndy Tartakovsky says all animators are not good enough with their work like him. In a recent interview, Tartakovsky gave a few pointers on why animators end up coming nowhere near him in their animated projects. Coming from the Unicorn: Warriors Eternal creator, who has explored the field for nearly three decades, these pointers make for a great lesson in animation.

Genndy Tartakovsky's 2001 animated series "Samurai Jack" is probably one of the best of its era. The series boasted a peculiar and stoic tone, with the title hero (Phil Lamarr) staying quiet for vast blocks of the show. Samurai Jack was lost in the distant future, thanks to the sorcery of a tricky trickster god named Aku, and a lot of the series was devoted to Jack's exploration of strange, new alien settings. "Samurai Jack." also featured a unique, neo-cubist aesthetic; characters didn't have black-line outlines, and backgrounds were often abstract and blocky. Fans will also hasten to add the overwhelmingly awesome action of "Samurai Jack." If one is animating with blocky shapes and abstract backgrounds, the action can be just as stylized. The fight scenes on "Samurai Jack" are the stuff of legend.
"Samurai Jack" ran until 2004, and there had long been plans to adapt the series into a live-action feature film.

We’re well into the so-called post-Peak TV era. Tightening budgets and consolidating streaming platforms suggest an uncertain future for the medium. With the exception of new staples like The Last of Us and Poker Face, many of the best television shows of 2023 wrapped things up with their final seasons or had only limited runs. And due to the Hollywood strikes, the TV landscape could look quite different by this time next year.
Yet, Succession and Barry have proven that there remains room for complex narratives skewering American lust for power and unaccountability, while comedies like The Great, I Think You Should Leave, and I’m a Virgo bent the boundaries of the form with gonzo vigor. And new animated shows like Genndy Tartakovsky’s Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and Max’s Scavengers Reign bring a sense of fantastical wonder that’s generally lacking in more terrestrial series. Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Primal” is back in Emmys conversation.
After the first season of the show won five Emmys, including Outstanding Animated Program, it’s back in the mix this year, once again vying for the Outstanding Animated Program award.
The nominated episode, “Shadow of Fate,” is a breathtaking tale that splits up our heroes — human Spear and dinosaur Fang. Fang falls in love with another dinosaur (Red), but has to make the heartbreaking decision of whether to try and find a new life with this dinosaur or to stick with her human.
TheWrap spoke to Tartakovsky about what it was like shaping the second season of the series, how he came up with “Shadow of Fate” and what the future for both “Primal” and his other animated series from this year, “Unicorn: Warriors Eternal,” will hold.

If you have fond memories of catching Adult Swim in the quiet hours of the night, you may be in for a shocking surprise. Following the successful viewership of Unicorn: Warriors Eternal and My Adventures with Superman, the popular adult-oriented network is broadening its horizons once again. A recent announcement has brought yet another schedule extension for Adult Swim, stretching Adult Swim's operating hours into as early as 5:00 Pm. Thankfully, instead of another two hours of King of the Hill, Adult Swim is also introducing a new programming block to fill this space: "Checkered Past."
A reference to the old Cartoon Network checkerboard logo, Checkered Past will bring back four classic shows from your childhood before returning to Adult Swim's regular programming. It's not a foreign concept to the late-night network, especially if you've been a long-time viewer. But this shake-up in programming represents a wider shift in priorities...

Genndy Tartakovsky's Unicorn: Warriors Eternal finally wrapped up its first season, completing a ten-episode journey through the heart of steampunk-era London. While fans of Tartakovsky's previous work will find more of his staples throughout the entire series, we'd be lying if we said everything was all fine and dandy. Underneath its unique visuals and stellar action, there's plenty of room for improvement across the board.
What we're trying to say is that there's a lot that Unicorn: Warriors Eternal got right as a series. Yet, despite the 20-year development period, we think that there are some small criticisms that can be addressed in a second season. Whether a second season will happen or not remains to be seen, but until then, these are just a handful of things Unicorn: Warriors Eternal got right – and other things it got wrong.

Genndy Tartakovsky discussed his use of silence, sound effects, and music in the sound design of his new series, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal.
Tartakovsky told Vulture, “I’m a product of ’70s filmmaking. In the ’70s, things were just a little bit more avant-garde. They were experimenting. Sound was a big part of it. Movie storytelling in the 1940s and ’50s was about grandeur, and there was a lot of musical underscoring. When you get to the ’60s and ’70s, the sound of the movies feels more independent — a little more raw, for lack of a better word.” He then gives an example of what he means to further illustrate his point: "The beginning of Once Upon a Time in the West is just guys waiting for a train. You’ve got these incredibly detailed faces. Minimum sound design. But if you watch it, especially on a big screen, you’re sucked in like crazy.

Adult Swim Orders ‘Common Side Effects’ From ‘King of the Hill’ Creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels
“King of the Hill” creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels are partnering with Adult Swim on a new adult-animated comedy titled “Common Side Effects,” the network announced at Annecy International Animation Film Festival.
The upcoming half-hour series is created by Joe Bennet and Steve Hely with Judge and Daniels executive producing. “Common Side Effects” dives into the world’s complicated responses when it’s revealed that the elixir of life does, in fact, exist. The comedy’s gateway into this complex reality are former high school lab partners Marshall and Frances. Together, they stumble upon a conspiracy involving big pharma, the government and a rare mushroom that very well may be the key to curing all the diseases in the world.

“Unicorn: Warriors Eternal,” airing now as part of the Adult Swim programming block on Cartoon Network (and streaming on Max), is centered around four indestructible spirits who travel through time, inhabiting the bodies of whoever is around, as they battle the forces of evil. After a brief prologue, we’re introduced to our characters, who all live in a cartoonishly steampunk-y Victorian London – one warrior inhabits the spirit of a young newlywed woman (complicating matters for her betrothed), another a young street urchin. There’s also a robot named Copernicus who guides the spirits through time.
It is both outlandish and singularly visionary; the kind of thing that could only be dreamed up by Genndy Tartakovsky, the fabled creator of “Dexter’s Laboratory,” “Samurai Jack” and, most recently, the Emmy-winning “Primal.” “Unicorn: Warriors Eternal” feels like both a culmination and extension of Tartakovsky’s previous work, mixing the spiritualism of “Samurai Jack...

This August, Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block is further expanding its daily lineup by adding a number of classic Cn shows to its schedule.
Last month, Adult Swim expanded its daily programming by one hour. As broken by Deadline, this move has proven to be such a success that Warner Bros. Discovery is giving Adult Swim another extra hour in two months. More specifically, a new block is set to debut under the Adult Swim banner on Monday, Aug. 28. The block is called "Checkered Past," a reference to Cartoon Network's iconic checkerboard logo. It will consist of classic shows that no longer regularly air on Cartoon Network proper, such as Ed, Edd n Eddy; Dexter's Laboratory; Courage the Cowardly Dog; and The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Adult Swim's "Checkered Past" will replace a rotation of current Cartoon Network shows like Teen Titans Go!.

Television continually delivers groundbreaking and unique programs, but it's a cyclical pattern that inevitably repeats itself. This is something that's not specific to television. However, it seems increasingly common for old television shows to receive revivals and sequel series that attempt to present nostalgic ideas as new.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s new series Unicorn: Warriors Eternal looks at the common phrase “destined for greatness” with an eyebrow raised. Sure, the expression is typically a compliment, but it also comes with added pressures. This is especially the case if the caveats include completely upending your life and leaving your family to become the vessel of heroes tasked with saving the world.

Genndy Tartakovsky put Cartoon Network originals on the map when he created Dexter’s Laboratory. It kicked started an entire era for the network as it transitioned from showing classic cartoons to debuting original programming of its own. This time is affectionately known as the Powerhouse Era for fans who hold the network’s time from 1998 to 2005 as Cartoon Network’s prime. There are so many lists ranking the works of Tartakovsky we had to ask the creator himself how he would rank the shows that debuted on the channel. When speaking with Tartakovsky about his latest animated feature Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, we asked which projects he holds near and dear to his heart. “Well yeah, of course, Dexter is number one because it was the first, and it paved the way for everything that I’ve done ever since, right? Without Dexter, I don’t know where I would be,...

The return of Genndy Tartakovsky to Adult Swim has finally arrived in the form of Unicorn: Warriors Eternal. The series has been more than two decades in the making during Tartakovsky's lengthy tenure at Cartoon Network. Following a programming adjustment by Adult Swim, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal has finally made its debut on the late-night network. While it may not feature the same kind of stylish violence found in Tartakovsky's other series, Primal, it still bears his signature trademarks: beautiful animation, gorgeous settings, and an intriguing plot that will – hopefully – end in a conclusive fashion.
The series recently debuted with a two-part opener, "The Awakening," with new episodes airing on Adult Swim and HBO Max. Following a group of heroes collectively known as "Unicorn," they battle evil throughout time itself as they reincarnate themselves wherever it may appear. Their latest battle, now taking place in Victorian London, will follow these heroes...

The following contains spoilers for Unicorn: Warriors Eternal Season 1, Episodes 1 and 2, "The Awakening Part 1" and "The Awakening Part 2", which premiered May 7 on Adult Swim and is available to stream now on HBO Max.
Genndy Tartakovsky, famed creator of Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack, has struck animated gold once again with this latest epic series, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal. The series revolves around a trio of magical warriors whose souls are resurrected throughout time in order to battle a reoccurring force of malevolent evil. The premiere episodes have introduced an intriguing mythical and action-packed story with a cast of incredibly fascinating characters, but have also raised several questions about them.
The unique mythology behind the characters, their conflict and their most recent awakening not only lends itself to an already entertaining premise but shows that it could also potentially be used to explore some dark themes similar to Tartakovsky's other series, Primal.

Genndy Tartakovsky’s work brilliantly reinforces the mantra of “less is more.” Samurai Jack uses the trials of a time-traveling samurai to create an aura of loneliness and desperation, while Primal explores the unexpectedly moving friendship between a dinosaur and a caveman. More broadly, Tartakovsky’s focused ambition lends itself well to the at once mythic and intimate odysseys that he takes viewers on.
Tartakovsky’s new animated series, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, centers on a group of magical beings—sorceress Melinda (Hazel Doupe), cosmic monk Seng (Demari Hunte), warrior elf Eldrid (Tom Milligan), and steam-powered robot Copernicus—tasked with fending off a monstrous evil through the ages, which means that they’ll need physical hosts to travel through time. So begins a dogged battle, with host body after host body thrown at an ageless villain that doesn’t require flesh to wreak havoc. Oh, and there’s one other complication: This time,...

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!
