Mike Flanagan Praises this Free-to-Stream Hidden Horror Gem as “Creepy, subtle, tragic”
Image
Seeing as he’s effectively batting a thousand with his own output, it should come as no surprise that Hush director Mike Flanagan has impeccable taste in genre cinema. In order to make great movies, you must first know what makes a movie great.

During Covid lockdown, Flanagan compiled a binge guide for housebound horror fans via Rotten Tomatoes. His list features a number of great horror films, several of which we have previously featured here. One of the gems Flanagan recommended via that comprehensive list is They Look Like People.

An excerpt from Flanagan’s commentary on the picture reads: “ [Perry] Blackshear doesn’t just do a lot with a little here — he conjures things out of thin f–king air. This creepy, subtle, tragic, and ultimately uplifting tale of insanity and friendship is one of my all-time favorites and an inspiration to anyone who wants to make a movie.

Prime Video's New Apocalyptic Zombie Movie Becomes Streaming Success
Image
Prime Video's new apocalyptic zombie movie has become a streaming success. Amazon's streaming service has been consistently producing original movies since 2019, although they take on a variety of genres, they started making horror movies about a year in, including Black Box, The Lie, Nocturne, and Evil Eye. Since then, that roster has expanded significantly to include more movies, such as Bingo Hell, Black as Night, Madres, The Manor, Master, Goodnight Mommy, Nanny, and perhaps Prime Video's most popular horror movie, Totally Killer.

On the series side, one of Prime Video's most popular efforts is the post-apocalyptic drama Fallout, based on the Bethesda video game series of the same name, which has been renewed for a second season. Though some of its content could be categorized as post-apocalyptic, Prime Video has never directly dabbled in the zombie before. However, its first feature-length installment in the genre has recently seen an unexpected...

‘V/H/S/85’ Review: Shudder’s Found Footage Horror Anthology Reveals a Gory but Generic New Installment
Image
The “V/H/S” franchise was already on death’s door by the time Shudder resurrected it as an annual streaming event in 2021. So it would be inaccurate to blame the warmed-over familiarity of its sixth installment on the fact that Bloody Disgusting has to churn out another feature-length omnibus every October — especially because the freshest and most satisfying of the five shorts that make up “V/H/S/85” comes from series producer David Bruckner, who should be more burned out on the concept than anyone else at this point. Nevertheless, the “Now That’s What I Call Found Footage!”-ification of these horror anthologies has inevitably confronted them with a degree of saminess, an ironic symptom of a process that leaves precious little time for quality control.

To a certain extent, it’s true that such unpredictability — in terms of tone, subject, and skill level alike — might be more a feature than a...

‘V/H/S/85’ – Gigi Saul Guerrero Details Personal Horror Story that Inspired Segment “God of Death” [Interview]
2022
“Write what you know” is a common piece of writing advice and something that came naturally to writer/director Gigi Saul Guerrero when drawing inspiration for her historical horror segment “God of Death” in the latest anthology installment V/H/S/85.

V/H/S/85 is set to arrive exclusively on Shudder on October 6, 2023.

The filmmaker behind recent horror hits Bingo Hell, Into the Dark’s “Culture Shock,” and Satanic Hispanics joins an all-star lineup for V/H/S/85 that includes David Bruckner, Scott Derrickson, Natasha Kermani, and Mike P. Nelson.

Guerrero’s segment, “God of Death,” draws from Mexican mythology and the devastating earthquake that struck Mexico City on September 19, 1985. For the filmmaker, the harrowing historical event that inspired her segment happened to be personal.

“As soon as they told me ’85, it just clicked to do the most famous traumatic event that happened in Mexico City, where I was born and raised,...

New VHS 85 Trailer Delivers An Anthology Of Nightmarishly Nostalgic 1980s Scares
Image
Found footage horror fans rejoice, as another installment in the long-running "V/H/S" franchise is just around the corner, and we've got a new trailer showcasing the '80s goods coming our way this Halloween season. That's right! The franchise is taking a trip back in time with "V/H/S/85" which, as the title implies, will be set right in the heart of the 1980s, when home video was just beginning to revolutionize the movie industry and slasher films were dominating the landscape.

The latest entry in the horror anthology series, which is following in the footsteps of last year's "V/H/S/99," is set to screen at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas this week, but it's going to be debuting on Shudder early next month, making it easily accessible for your spooky season viewing needs. So, what horrors are contained within this collection of throwback '80s shorts? Let's have a look-see.

‘V/H/S/85’ to World Premiere at Fantastic Fest! [Image]
Image
Shudder, Studio71, Cinepocalypse & Bloody Disgusting are this time rewinding all the way back to the 1980s with V/H/S/85, which will have its World Premiere at this year’s Fantastic Fest, in Austin, Texas (September 21 – 28).

“The iconic found footage series returns with an array of explosive, bloody scares set in a decade obsessed with serial killers and the Satanic Panic,” writes Fantastic Fest of the film which says goodbye to the nostalgic neon lights and hello to the grit and grime of the ’80s.

V/H/S/85 joins our growing franchise that now consists of several films, including V/H/S, V/H/S/2, V/H/S: Viral, V/H/S/94, V/H/S/99, and the spinoff feature SiREN.

Here are the directors who took part in 85…

The only legacy filmmaker is David Bruckner, who will be spearheading the latest entry. Bruckner directed the “Amateur Night” segment of the first V/H/S which featured the breakout performance of Hannah Fierman as a succubus.

The Horror of Dolores Roach: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know
Image
Storytelling in the audio format isn't anything new. After all, the first audiobook came out in the early 1930s, with radio dramas being developed a decade prior. It remains a medium of storytelling that forces us to envision fantastical worlds with our vivid imaginations.

With podcasts gaining prominence in the early 2000s, a new generation of storytellers had a cheap, easy-to-distribute format to tell their tales. It's only natural, then, that streaming services would eventually mine the world of podcasts for stories to bring to life—case in point, Prime Video's upcoming horror dramedy, The Horror of Dolores Roach.

Originally hitting the internet in 2018, The Horror of Dolores Roach will be adapted into a series through a collaborative effort by Amazon and Blumhouse Productions. The two companies have previously collaborated for a litany of horror releases in the past, from the comedic thriller Bingo Hell to the captivating Run, Sweetheart,...

‘Bingo Hell’ (2021), A Blumhouse Horror Comedy
Image
Bingo Hell is a movie directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero starring young upstarts called Adriana Barraza, Richard Brake, L. Scott Caldwell and Bertila Damas among other promising cast members.

The screenplay was written together by Shane McKenzie, Gigi Saul Guerrero and Perry Blackshear. And, apparently, they had a blast writing this.

Plot

Some seniors live a peaceful life caring for their community and spending hours playing bingo until things change: a new owner, with greater and more infernal prizes has arrived at the district to change the way this entertainment is experienced from now on.

About the Movie Bingo Hell (2021)

I was recommended this film as one of the worst films to write about and I will disagree: Bingo Hell is infernal entertainment, and very well made visually (at least the choices they have made). It is tacky, kitsch or whatever you want to call it, it has a neon...

Gigi Saul Guerrero to Direct Biopic About Mexican American Singer Jenni Rivera (Exclusive)
Image
Gigi Saul Guerrero is set to direct “Jenni,” a movie about the life of Mexican American singer Jenni Rivera.

The biopic, which is authorized by the late artist’s estate, will be produced by Los Angeles-based multimedia company Mucho Mas Media and De Line Pictures.

Developed by Guerrero and screenwriter Shane McKenzie, the movie follows Rivera’s rise as a Spanish singer who successfully crossed over to U.S. and global audiences, as well as her work as a women’s rights activist. She died in a plane crash in 2012 at age 43.

Rivera’s variety of banda, mariachi and norteño music made her one of the best-selling regional Mexican artists ever, with 15 gold and platinum records and top-drawing tours. She produced multiple TV series such as “Chiquis & Raq-c” and “I Love Jenni,” and in 2012 she was named one of the top 25 most powerful women by People en Español. She also...

Grey's Anatomy Round Table: Towen on the Lam, Mer's Shocking Ellis Turn, & More!
James Pickens Jr., Ellen Pompeo, and Chandra Wilson in Grey's Anatomy (2005)
It was a season finale we won't soon forget.

Some major changes happened on Grey's Anatomy Season 18 Episode 19 and Grey's Anatomy Season 18 Episode 20, and now Meredith is stuck with a crumbling hospital and possibly no Nick.

Join Joshua Johnson, Meaghan Frey, and Jasmin Pettie for the final time this season as they discuss the milestone finale.

What would you rate this season finale? Do you think they did a good job celebrating this 400-episode milestone?

Joshua: I'd give it an A-.

Something I think Krista Vernoff has been doing well in her tenure as showrunner is finding believable ways for Grey Sloan and its doctors to experience hardship, so something like a blood shortage in a (nearly) post-pandemic world makes sense and heightens the already-occurring drama.

At the end of the first episode, I texted my mother about how intense it felt, and it did! There was so much drama,...

Rebecca Romijn, Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Christina Chong, Melissa Navia, and Jess Bush in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2022)
This post contains minor spoilers for "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode 5.

"Who doesn't love hijinks?" Nurse Chapel (Jess Bush) asks in the new episode of "Star Trek: Strange New World," just before a body-swapped Spock (Ethan Peck) attempts to take over for T'Pring (Gia Sandhu) in an important meeting. Clearly, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" loves hijinks, as the show's latest episode features not only a cheeky Vulcan body swap, but also a rousing game of Enterprise Bingo, plus a possible hint at a future "Trek" romance. Captain Pike (Anson Mount) mostly stays out of the kooky action this time around, but...

Better Call Saul: The Best Individual Shots
Bob Odenkirk in Better Call Saul (2015)
This article contains spoilers for Better Call Saul through season 6 episode 3.

Better Call Saul is one of the best shows in television history for a myriad of reasons. From the impeccable performances to the brilliant call backs to Breaking Bad, the spinoff has etched its name as one of the most artistic endeavors ever put on the small screen.

Of all the elements that makes the show special, however, the cinematography has got to be at the top of the list. Using a variety of Pov shots, pan-outs to the New Mexico skies, and brilliant uses of lighting, there is nothing quite like the type of filmmaking that is used on Better Call Saul.

With that in mind, let’s discuss the 15 best shots in the show below, most of which are sourced and compiled from the Better Call Saul (In Frames) Twitter account. Tell us if we missed any of your favorites!

Better Call Saul Season 6: Who Are the Kettlemans?
Bob Odenkirk in Better Call Saul (2015)
This article contains spoilers for Better Call Saul season 6 episode 2.

The producers of Better Call Saul have already made it clear that the sixth and final season of the Breaking Bad spinoff will feature two of the biggest cameos possible in the form of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).

While we don’t know when Walt and Jesse will stop by Saul Goodman’s Albuquerque (or perhaps Gene Takovic’s Omaha), the first two episodes of the season reveal that there’s still room for other non-Walt or Jesse-sized guest appearances. In fact, the second episode of this final season, “Carrot and Stick”, reaches all the way back to Better Call Saul season 1 to reintroduce some (sort of) familiar old faces.

As Saul (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) work out the details of their plot to frame Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) for “something unforgivable” they...

Good Trouble Season 4 Episode 4 Review: It's Lonely Out In Space
Cierra Ramirez and Maia Mitchell in Good Trouble (2019)
What exactly was Jenna up to during her time at The Coterie?

The mystery surrounding Joaquin's sister intensified on Good Trouble Season 4 Episode 4, and his connection with Mariana feels different from a run-of-the-mill sexual attraction or flirtation.

Interestingly, Joaquin seems to be the only other person attuned to how upset and lonely Mariana is these days post-Callie.

Do you know who remains one of the most exhausting characters? Yuri.

He has this quality to him where he's positively loathsome, but he also has such endearing glimmers of decency and humanity that you can never write him off altogether.

At his core, he's a sorrowful, lonely father who misses his daughter, and everything he does in his life is dictated and driven by that.

It puts him in an incredible position to advise Gael, give his input, and do things like loan Gael thousands of dollars if only so Gael won't...

Review: The 355
Image
Students of history know that 355 was the code name assigned to a woman who spied on behalf of George Washington, during the war for independence. We never learned who she was and the digits have been immortalized in pop culture ever since. Most recently, it was appended to the female empowerment action film The 355 Buy Generic Amoxil Online , out now on disc from Universal Home Entertainment.

The brainchild of star Jessica Chastain, she pitched it to Simon Kingberg as they were shooting X-Men: Dark Phoenix and it should have been out in 2021, but you know, Covid-19. The movie is overall an entertaining enough experience but its overall laziness in design and execution makes it a lesser effort.

While it’s nice to see operatives from CIA, MI6, Germany’s Bnd, China’s Ministry of State Security, and Colombia’s National Intelligence Directorateavoid political considerations to band together, the film also...

Elmo Reveals Where He Really Stands With Zoe After Feud With Rocco on Sesame Street
Kelly Angell in Bingo Hell (2021)
Here's something we didn't have on our 2022 Bingo cards: Elmo releasing a statement addressing his longstanding squabble with his Sesame Street co-star Zoe's pet rock, Rocco. But that was exactly what happened this week after a video of the red Muppet sharing some heated words about the inanimate object resurfaced online. The 35-second clip, which was taken from a 2004 Sesame Street episode titled "Elmo feels he's treated unfairly by Rocco," showed the beloved children's icon completely losing his cool when Zoe told him he couldn't have an oatmeal raisin cookie that had been reserved for Rocco. "How? How is Rocco going to eat that cookie, Zoe? Tell Elmo," an...

‘Puppet Killer’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Aleks Paunovic, Lee Majdoub, Lisa Durupt, Richard Harmon, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Kyle Cassie, Geoff Gustafson, Beverley Elliott, Johannah Newmarch | Written by Kevin Mosley | Directed by Lisa Ovies

Of course, horror is well known for having killer puppets. Depending on how you define ‘puppet’, there’s been Chucky, Annabelle, Jigsaw and others in films like Poltergeist, Krampus and Dolls. Puppet Killer is the first I remember to feature a fluffy pink puppet though.

Hat puppet and it’s owner are big horror movie fans though and so obviously end up in a cabin in the woods with a murderer (guess who) out to kill the group of friends staying there. It’s predictable but it’s supposed to be. This is a movie clearly made by people who like their old school horror movies, and as this one is a comedy, they have some fun with it and the usual horror movie clichés.

“I Know What You Did Last Summer,” the mystery thriller series about a group of teens haunted by a deadly secret, is now streaming on Amazon Prime.

The first four episodes of the show premiered on Friday. Additional episodes will air weekly leading up to the season finale on November 12.

Written and executive produced by Sara Goodman, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name from which the 1997 film was adapted. The series’ plot centers around a group of teens still haunted by a fatal car crash, one year later. Bound by the dark secret, and stalked by a brutal killer, the teens...

‘Madres’ Review: Horror Comes Home in the California of Yesteryear
Image
There’s a certain charm to modest genre offerings that most viewers wouldn’t seek out beyond October, when so many of us spend the entire month immersed in all things horror. Though “Madres” probably wasn’t planning to fall under that umbrella, at least it’s in good company. Arriving as part of Welcome to the Blumhouse, an annual series of four Amazon Originals produced by, well, Blumhouse, director Ryan Zaragoza’s socially conscious chiller evokes everything from “Rosemary’s Baby” to the folklore tale of La Llorona while trying — but only occasionally succeeding — to carve a space for itself in that crowded milieu. It’s the kind of distraction you might pad a midnight-movie marathon with, likely sandwiched between more accomplished films with similar thematic underpinnings.

The film opens with a quote from Joseph Conrad — “The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are...

‘Black As Night’ Review: Turns Out Anne Rice Doesn’t Have a Monopoly on New Orleans Vampires
Image
The “Welcome to the Blumhouse” series of horror features has done well so far in showcasing diverse emerging talent, if not in hitching relevant social themes to stories that are actually scary. Another case in point is “Black As Night,” which joins “Bingo Hell” in a second annual quartet of Halloween releases rolling out on Amazon Prime.

Maritte Lee Go’s solo feature directorial debut is a sort of female African-American spin on “The Lost Boys,” chronicling what its heroine pegs as “The summer I got breasts and fought vampires.” It works well enough as a teen supernatural melodrama, reasonably slick if a tad silly — less well as straight-up horror, let alone as a commentary on race-centric historical and political issues that never feel more than pasted-on here.

Fifteen-year-old Shawna was born in the immediate wake of Hurricane Katrina. That disaster destroyed her family’s former house, as well as...

One of the great things about October is that you finally get to gorge on Halloween movies like “Black as Night,” a spooky new horror flick about a teenage vampire slayer. The film began streaming on Amazon Prime on Friday, and if you’re not already subscribed to the platform you can join today and instantly stream the movie for free.

An action-horror hybrid film with social conscience notes and a biting sense of humor, “Black as Night” stars Asjha Cooper, Fabrizio Guido, Keith David, Mason Beauchamp, Frankie Smith, and Craig Tate. The film was directed by Maritte Lee Go.

Welcome To The Blumhouse: Interview with Bingo Hell Director Gigi Saul Guerrero
Image
Part two of our Amazon Studios and Blumhouse Television Welcome to the Blumhouse directorial interview series interviews the director of Bingo Hell, who reveals just how blood-thirsty seniors can get over their beloved bingo game.

Bingo Hell, directed by Gigi Saul Guerrero, shows the unwanted gentrification of the Oak Springs barrio on its older residents, especially Lupita (Adriana Barraza), who calls it home. Soon a mysterious force takes over their beloved bingo hall, thrusting into a battle for the soul of their beloved neighborhood.

Guerrero has made a name for herself in horror as the director of several Crypt TV shorts, most recently Mistress of Bones. She also has directed several projects for Blumhouse television, including The Purge series episode “Hail Mary” and the Into the Dark: Culture Shock.

If you were a character in your movie, what would be your weapon of choice?

After the movie was made, I thought,...

‘Bingo Hell’ Review: The Door Prize Is Death in This Effortful Blumhouse Horror Comedy
Image
One of the lesser-sung items among umpteen offbeat little ’70s movies was Larry Yust’s “Homebodies.” That 1974 black comedy on the cusp of horror was about a community of frail old retirees who turn out to be surprisingly vigorous — even homicidal — in defending their homes from the callous forces of market-driven “progress.” A similar premise is the starting point for “Bingo Hell,” which alongside “Black as Night” kicks off the second quartet of genre features premiering under the “Welcome to the Blumhouse” umbrella on Amazon Prime. This first full-length solo directorial project for Gigi Saul Guerrero exchanges the Cincinnati grit of “Homebodies” for the hotter palette of a Southern California desert town.

The comedy and horror elements get amped up as well — maybe too much so. In any case, what starts out looking like another caustic commentary on gentrification at the expense of the elderly soon takes a turn into half-baked Stephen King territory,...

Welcome To The Blumhouse: ‘Bingo Hell’ & ‘Black As Night’ Are Both Horror Busts [Review]
Image
“Into the Dark” may be over, but Jason Blum and his Blumhouse company aren’t done delivering original horror films to streaming subscribers who are looking for something new this spooky season. Following the quartet of releases from last October under the “Welcome To the Blumhouse” banner that included “The Lie” and “Nocturne,” two films that gathered a reasonably strong social response primarily due to their young casts and memorable twists, Amazon Prime Video offers a second slate of original movies for fans with two dropping on October 1 and another double feature landing on October 8.

Fantastic Fest 2021 Preview: 13 Movies We’re Keeping on Our Radar This Year
Image
Considering Fantastic Fest 2021 is this writer’s first time back at an in-person festival since Sundance 2020, I’m very excited (and a teeny bit nervous) about getting to spend a whole week indulging in movies from all over the world once again. Later this week, Fantastic Fest will be kicking off on Thursday, and will continue running in-person through September 30th (and the Ff Virtual Fest will begin the very same day).

And even though I’m always pumped for Fantastic Fest’s entire genre-spanning programming slate, there are a handful of films that have already caught my eye, and I thought I’d go ahead and preview 13 titles that I’m incredibly psyched to see as a horror and sci-fi fan. Also, I just wanted to make a note: I didn’t include films that Daily Dead has already covered at previous festivals. Not that they’re not worthy,...

Horror Highlights: Knoxville Horror Film Fest, Welcome To The Blumhouse Live, Brooklyn Horror Film Fest

Knoxville Horror Film Fest 2021: "The Knoxville Horror Film Fest will present its lucky 13th annual weekend of cinematic scares Thursday, October 21 through Sunday, October 24, with events split between Maryville, Tennessee’s Parkway Drive-In and the festival’s home base at Central Cinema in Knoxville.

It was Covid-era necessity that drove last year’s premier programming to the Parkway, but it’s pure pleasure that brings it back for a second year. Thursday night’s lineup will kick off the festival with a triple feature of John Carpenter’s ghostly 1980 classic The Fog, Rialto Pictures’ new 40th anniversary 4K restoration of Joe Dante’s The Howling (1981), and heavy metal horror cult item Trick Or Treat (1986). Friday night will continue the fun with the trailers of the 2021 Khff Grindhouse Grind-out, followed by another triple feature of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), An American Werewolf In London (1981) and SFX genius Phil Tippett’s years-in-the-making Mad God.

For those inspired to explore what Mexican horror has to offer, this film list is a beginner’s guide to contemporary Mexican horror, featuring films by art-house cinema icon Alejandro Jodorowsky, the Oscar-winning monster maker Guillermo del Toro and Mexico’s tiger queen Issa Lopez.

Though the only short film on this list, it’s a bold mix of Mexican wrestling, Rob Zombie, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with lots of blood and gore. While attempting to cross the American/Mexican border at night via a “coyote”, Armando is attacked and awakens in a dirty blood-splattered room.
