How often do we stumble upon a blockbuster flick that doesn’t quite get its due roses when it comes to the box office? Some films become instant classics, drawing audiences from every corner and grossing millions of dollars at the box office. However, there are some hidden gems that may not have received the recognition they deserve, despite their indescribable brilliance. One such film is The Shawshank Redemption, which starred Tim Robbins in the leading role.
The 1994 film, helmed by Frank Darabont (The Green Mile and The Mist), has endured the test of time and remains an unlikely classic. Despite receiving critical acclaim and seven Oscar nominations, The Shawshank Redemption did not perform well at the box office.

Who wouldn't want to play with these GameCube-style controllers for the Switch?
A hardware modder, whose YouTube account is named Shank Mods, has posted an eye-watering video that will cut to the heart of many a Nintendo fan: it features a set of fully functional Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers that have been modded to look like GameCube controllers.
With Nintendo's classic franchises such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. spanning both the GameCube and the Switch, certain segments of the fandom have been calling for an official mashup like this for quite some time. And since you can already buy official versions of the Nes and Snes controllers for the Switch, a set of GameCube-style Switch controllers doesn't feel like an unrealistic dream.
However, Shank Mods has beaten Nintendo to the punch and created some gorgeous GameCube-aping controllers that are apparently fully functional. You can take...

The year 2015 is upon us and it’s safe to say that we haven’t lived up to all the expectations filmmakers had for us. Some of their negative predictions might be reflective of what’s come to pass while other less pessimistic ones haven’t quite transpired. I’ll let you be the judge of whether or not the good outweighs the bad when it comes to where humanity sits in the grand scheme of things after watching a few or all of the movies I’ve listed which take place in the year 2015.
Let’s just get the most obvious one out of the way immediately. Robert Zemeckis’s Back to the Future Part II takes place in three different times, one of which is 2015. In the movie, “Marty McFly must repeat his visit to 1955” to prevent catastrophic changes to 1985 after dropping in on 2015... “without interfering with his first trip.

With so many projects filming in the UK at the moment, and with most of the major film studios booked out by major American productions, British producers are having to be increasingly creative when it comes to finding somewhere to film. Which is how HeyUGuys found ourselves spending a snowy day early last year in a former Hsbc training centre just outside of Watford.
“It’s like a mini-studio,” explains producer, Terry Stone, “It’s like Pinewood Studios, but having the lot, and you just play on it all day”.
Stone, and his producing partner, Daniel Toland have taken over the 74 acre site to film their latest movie, the Julian Gilbey helmed, credit-card-fraud-flick, Plastic.
“You’ve got the main stately home over there, and that’s doubling for all the interiors, like the Dorchester, and then doubling again for the Marie de Guise.” Adds, Tolland, “We’ve got a fantastic art department.

In recent years London’s Shoreditch area has been spruced up rather a lot. The former factories and warehouses that were once abandoned and left to run down have found a new life as trendy shops, cafes bars and restaurants. It would seem, however, that the Montana production team have found one that’s been left to rot.
As we wander around the loft space that’s being used for the day’s filming, it’s impossible to tell which bits of twisted metal are set dressing, and which are going to give us tetanus. We make sure not to touch anything, just to be safe.
“I come from a music video background, so anything visual has to stand out to make sense,” director Mo Ali explains, “I’m avoiding doing the whole council estate aesthetic; it’s almost slightly fantastical locations, but they suit the characters.”

Truth Of Dare
Stars: Liam Boyle, Jack Gordon, Florence Hall, Nicky Henson, Jennie Jacques, Jason Maza, Tom Kane, David Oakes | Written by Matthew McGuchan | Directed by Robert Heath
I find with British horror, especially films with smaller budgets there is a tendency to stick to the mainstream idea of what is popular. Set up an injustice at in the first few minutes of the film then have a character come back for revenge. Its cliché, it’s over used and to be quite honest it’s boring. The ironic thing is though there is always a hidden gem that manages to shine through, down to some clever writing and actor choices. This is what you get with Truth or Dare.

Five teenage friends are taken hostage by a vengeful psychopath and forced to play a party game with life-or-death consequences.
Truth: A group of college friends celebrate the end of term with a party to end all parties. Drink, drugs and sex flow in equal measure as everyone lets loose. As the focus shifts to playing a seemingly harmless game of Truth or Dare it leads to humiliation and pain for one lonely geek.
Dare: A year later the four friends are reunited as they are invited to a birthday party at a grand stately home. They realize very quickly that this is a party where the guests are definitely not welcome. In a bid for vengeance all are forced to play a sickening and gruesome game of Truth or Dare, where a Dare may well equal death.

*here be minor spoilers. Director: Robert Heath. Writer: Matthew McGuchan. Cast: Liam Boyle, Jack Gordon, Florence Hall, Nicky Henson, Jennie Jacques, Tom Kane, Jason Maza, and David Oakes. Truth or Dare is a revenge thriller created by director Robert Heath. Heath recently completed another dramatic thriller titled Sus in 2010. Heath has cast a wide range of actors for his latest. Arguably, Jennie Jacques (Shank) and television actor David Oakes have the most acting experience. Eleanour (Jacques) and Justin (Oakes) are also coincidentally the two main villains in this picture with Felix (Tom Kane) acting as a quiet and shy protagonist. Truth or Dare transitions from a revenge thriller into a gory horror picture thanks to a few twists along the way. And, this film is an enjoyable watch despite a few awkward scenes. The film's story is set up much like a trap in the first act. Justin invites several...

This year's UK riots made gritty dramas such as Kidulthood and Shank look all too real. But could these films be part of the problem, asks Live magazine's Zindzi Rocque-Drayton
It looked a little like a movie. Cars on fire. Groups of youths in hoodies, their faces covered, running from corner to corner. Shop windows being smashed, and people climbing inside to fetch trainers or TVs or designer cloths. Was it Shank? Kidulthood? Who's starring in this one?
What unfolded on the nation's TV screens between 6 and 10 August wasn't a Sky Movies season of British urban cinema, of course, but the English riots, leaving five people dead and causing an estimated £200m worth of damage to property. And even as they unfolded, there were voices linking the violence to popular culture. Rooney Mara, currently being enveloped by the Hollywood machine, apparently now has limited time for quirky indie dramas, and has had to drop out of Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes. But all is not lost for Francesca Gregorini's second stint behind the camera: she's already replaced Mara with Kaya Scodelario. The up-and-coming Scodelario turned heads in Channel 4's Skins, and has herself seen some Hollywood action in Clash Of The Titans, where she played Peshet. She's otherwise taken the indie route however, with roles in Duncan Jones' Moon and Mo Ali's Shank, and she recently starred as Cathy Earnshaw in Andrea Arnold's controversial Wuthering Heights.Emanuel And The Truth About Fishes is not a peculiarly piscine entry in the erotic franchise (not enough M's), but from the cursory synopses available at this stage, rather sounds like a bonkers mash-up of Vertigo and Lars And The Real Girl.

The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn makes daily progress, while new Bollywood entry Ra.One soars on the crest of a Diwali wave
The winner
Several years in the making, combining the creative efforts of box office powerhouses Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn arrived freighted with a fair amount of commercial expectation. On the other hand, Hergé's boy reporter isn't necessarily a familiar character for the pre-teen target, so it was hard to predict exactly how the film would perform.
Opening last Monday with a so-so £485,000, the film saw grosses build day by day throughout the October half-term holiday, with £640,000 on Tuesday, £1.05m on both Wednesday and Thursday, £1.11m on Friday and £1.30m on Saturday. Seven-day total is a healthy £6.76m, the biggest opening for an animated film this year. On the flipside, it only achieved that number...

Few in the UK film industry want to shout about it but the evidence is clear. We are enjoying a renaissance in domestic cinema. Andrew Pulver reports on how audiences developed a taste for homegrown movies
Compared to theatre, cinema is an entirely portable medium – think what our view of film would be like if all we saw were British movies, with occasional touring productions of foreign work. No Hollywood blockbusters, no Korean ultra-violence, no Iranian minimalism. Nothing old, either – no Italian neorealism, or Czech new wave, or French poetic realism. Imagine what life for the British filmgoer would have been like, say, in 1978 – the highlight of your year would probably have been Death on the Nile, or Watership Down. And let's not forget the dark days of 1999 and 2000, when this paper felt compelled to trash the jaw-dropping wave of terrible British films in the wake of the lottery-fund bonanza.

Exclusive: Los Angeles-based sales agent Im Global has made a multi-film commitment to take upcoming in-house productions from UK distributor Revolver Entertainment. The slate will go through Im Global’s Octane genre label. “We’re looking to create films that have the potential to travel internationally,” Revolver CEO Justin Marciano tells me. Gunslinger, Revolver’s in-house production arm, has two projects it is pushing forward on: Offender, directed by Ron Scalpello, which the company is pitching as a Brit version of A Prophet; and Lenny “The Guvnor” McClean (working title), based on the true story of a East End thug who became Britain’s most notorious bare-knuckle fighter. Revolver has already set a summer 2012 release for Offender, written by Paul Van Carter and produced by Nick Taussig of Revolver, which tells the story of a man who sets up his own imprisonment in order to avenge the rape of his girlfriend.

Blood feuds are as ancient as primordial human history. The Celts (Irish) have killed thousands throughout history. In Albania, 10,000 people have been killed in the last twenty years because of family or blood feuds. Now, Gunslinger, the production arm of Revolver Entertainment, will bring a family feud to East London. When Tanya (Kate Foster-Burns) is killed, Kayla must retaliate for her sister's murder the only way she knows how, by joining an all girl gang. The gang leader Danielle (Emma Hartley-Miller) vows to get vengeance on an opposing gang: "we'll be like them," which leads to even more violence.
The first trailer for Sket is here and the clip is mature rated because of violence and other adult material. As well, Gunslinger continues to create these gang styled thrillers often set in East London e.g. Shank, which just seem to highlight gang violence. Also, the material here seems to...

To mark the release of The Veteran on DVD and Blu-ray on August 29th, Revolver Entertainment have given us five copies of the movie to give away on DVD.
Revolver Entertainment presents acclaimed British actor and BAFTA-nominee Toby Kebbell (Prince of Persia, Control, RocknRolla ) in The Veteran, the gritty, hard-hitting tale of Robert Miller, a young soldier returning from Afghanistan, unable to fit back into society and soon targeted as a clandestine operative to monitor suspected terrorists in Britain.
Writer/Director Matthew Hope (The Vanguard) helms this independent production, which he scripted with Robert Henry Craft, a former member of The Parachute Regiment who completed 24 years of exemplary service including active service worldwide. Although fiction, the film reflects on his experiences of adapting to civilian life, along with trying to self-manage Ptsd (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).

The first concept poster for Sket is now showing, courtesy of Revolver Entertainment. This production recently completed through Revolver Entertainment's Gunslinger production arm. This film company creates gang thrillers e.g. Shank, Anuvahood and others for moderate budgets (less than $1 million).
The graphic shows a girl gang looming in front of an austere background. The graphic says "Sisterhood," but the title would be offensive to most women. This title will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival this October. Check out the cast and crew details for Sket below.
The synopsis for Sket is here:
"When her sister is brutally murdered, teenager Kayla seeks revenge on the gang who carried out the attack. She joins a rival girl gang for support in her quest for retribution but soon finds herself caught up in their adrenaline-fuelled criminal lifestyle.

Gunslinger Films, the production arm of Revolver Entertainment, is getting set to release their third film, titled Sket. Sket is not a word that can be translated here with any class; however, the film deals with some of the lowlifes and family ties in a fictional female gang. Sket is a revenge thriller and Kayla, played by Aimee Kelly, seeks justice for those who attacked her sister. Gang warfare ensues.
Thriller fans in the United Kingdom can expect to see this film in theatres late in 2011, while those in North America will have to wait to see this film, at a future date. A release in North America has not been confirmed. However, readers can have a look at the UK release details for this "girl gang retribution thriller" (Revolver) inside.

Kidulthood director Menhaj Huda returns to UK cinemas this week with Everywhere and Nowhere, another coming-of-age tale focusing on a British Asian teenager (James Floyd, pictured below) wrestling with how to lead his own life, while having to contend with what’s expected of him from his family and culture.
We had the chance to chat with Huda about the film (which he co-wrote) and how he related to the characters in the film when he was growing up.
How much does the film reflect your own upbringing?
The side which wasn’t a struggle for me was my decision to take a creative path in my career (in the film, lead character Ash wants to be a DJ, much to the disapproval of his father).
The double life thing was definitely something I encountered, and trying to keep my love for clubbing/raving separate from my family.
This is another rites of passage tale.

Alpine-set Britcom edges out The Lincoln Lawyer, but posts the lowest returns for a top newcomer since April 2010
The fallow period
Occasionally, the weekend before or after a major blockbuster, no major movie will be released and the UK box office will pause for breath. The weekend of 18-20 March was different. The frame after Battle: Los Angeles and before Limitless hardly qualifies as a no-go zone for commercially appealing fare. But, for whatever reason, the date failed to attract a big hitter.
The Lincoln Lawyer and Chalet Girl, which both launched on 300-plus screens, battled for top-dog status. Over the Friday-to-Sunday period, the Matthew McConaughey legal thriller won the honours, with £572,000. But thanks to previews totaling £128,000 on Wednesday and Thursday, the alpine-set Britcom pulled ahead, with a five-day gross of £678,000.
Neither figure is cause for wild celebration. This weekend saw the previews-boosted Chalet Girl deliver the lowest box-office number...

The likes of Kidulthood and Shank started a new wave of films about urban British teens. Now the genre is getting its first spoof. So has it truly come of age?
There's no surer sign that a film style has matured into a fully-grown genre than when the first parody comes out. That bittersweet moment has arrived for British urban films in the shape of Anuvahood. This brashly coloured council estate jaunt follows a deluded sad case named "K" who fancies himself as a Mc-turned-drug dealer, but lacks the nous to pull it off. Marketed as the UK's answer to Us urban comedies such as Friday (1995) and House Party (1990), the title is also an obvious pastiche of Noel Clarke's Kidulthood, the 2006 film that gave rise to a slew of imitators. It's a ballsy move, especially considering co-writer, co-director and star Adam Deacon got his own break playing comic relief...

When (or if) you think of urban UK film, you may immediately think Noel Clarke. However, while he may be the biggest fish, Clarke isn’t the only one swimming in that pool. Based on the cult novel of the same name by Q (aka Ashanti Power, aka Kwabena Manso), two years ago, Deadmeat won awards on both sides of the pond, Best British Feature at the Bfm Film Festival (London, UK), as well as an Accolade Award for Excellence (Hollywood, Us) and is now due to be released on DVD this week… in the UK, anyway.
Written, directed by and starring Q, Deadmeat is a gritty urban thriller which explores London’s gangland dark underbelly in a chilling tale of revenge killings and betrayal.
While Clarke’s earlier films, KidultHood and AdultHood, gained an avid youth following thanks mainly to their somewhat realistic potrayal of bleak UK inner city life,...

Described as a “UK urban comedy,” from Adam Deacon, the star of Noel Clarke’s Kidulthood, Adulthood and Shank.
I don’t live in the UK, but from what I hear, there’s a proliferation of these kinds of so-called “urban comedies,” thanks largely to Mr Noel Clarke, who doesn’t seem to have a lot of fans in the, shall I say, “highbrow crowd,” partly due to what he has spawn. But you UK readers can correct me if I’m wrong about any of that.
On the surface, films like this one don’t seem all that different from the “urban comedies” we get here in the states, with the main difference being the “native tongue,” and locale. I think we’ve mocked and derided a few of those stateside brawls on this blog in the past. Although, there certainly appears to be a fan-base for them, otherwise,...

*Full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was supplied by Revolver Entertainment.
Director/writer: Sacha Bennett.
Bonded by Blood is loosely based on a group murder carried out December, 1995. The three killed were Patrick Tate, Craig Rolfe and Tony Tucker, each a drug dealer. These villains have been immortalized unjustly in three films, which include: The Essex Boys (2000), Rise of the Foot Soldier (2007) and now Bonded by Blood (2011). Likely killed by Jack Whomes and Michael Steele, who remain in prison, Bonded by Blood covers a detestable subject (drug dealing), with little depth. Revolver Entertainment will distribute this title on DVD February 1st and this film is really only for those who enjoy watching gangland styled films, as there is no positive moral tale here.
Many may have heard the story of The Intercity Firm and their coke induced exploits, but for those who have not - here is a summary.

Suicide Kids follows Archie Eden and a group of seven other depressed London teenagers who create a pact and take their own lives.
But as each person dies, it turns out that a killer is behind the deaths.

Suicide Kids will feature a who's who of cult, rising stars including Adulthood's Adam Deacon, Misfits star Robert Sheehan, and Andrew Ellis from This Is England.

First-time filmmaker Mo Ali’s Shank is a grimy mess of borrowed ideas and mixed messages. Utilizing a gritty style derivative of Guy Ritchie’s British productions and a few intensely physical chase sequences reminiscent of District B13, Ali’s flick never quite establishes its own identity.
Set in a dystopian 2015, the story centers on a scrappy gang of scavengers and amateur rappers, including the soft-spoken runt, Junior (Kedar Williams-Stirling), and his older brother, Rager (Ashley Bashy Thomas). With the food supply in steep decline, the gang often scrounges for “munchies,” the prize commodity among London’s warring factions.
Rager, who regularly preaches that violence isn’t the answer, is shanked in an altercation with a rival clan and Junior snaps, bent on having his bloody revenge. Well, which is it? The misguided quest takes the crew through trash-ridden streets overrun by drugs and prostitutes to find the culprit, Tugz...

Shank BannerMo Ali's first film is a futuristic titled called Shank. The film takes place five years from now in a fantasy created London, where gangs rule the streets. The chances that London, England could fall to gang warfare is unlikely, as Britain has survived Roman, Scandanavian, Irish, Scottish, French, Spanish, German and many more invasions. However, this is a fantasy world created by first time director Ali, with support from writer Paul Van Carter.
And a deadly fantasy world this is! Death is a common occurrence in Shank, with a kill or be killed atmosphere fueling further violence. One brother must rise above the blood soaked streets to stand for a better tomorrow in this trailer for Shank below. If you are feeling the post-apocalyptic vibe of this UK shot film, then get set for the DVD launch October 5th through the Revolver Entertainment Group, with DVD special features provided.

It's billed as 'From The Distributors Of Kidulthood'. Shank is fit to lick its boots...
If you've seen the poster for Shank while you've been out and about, you might notice a somewhat dubious credit as its strapline. Yes, Revolver Entertainment is proudly declaring that this film is "from the distributors of Kidulthood." And, of course, if you know your stuff about what that infers, you know that has about as much value as a debut novel by your local postman being billed as "from the man who brought you the last Harry Potter book".
This wouldn't be too big a problem even amongst "from the studio/producers/best boy of..." straplines, but it's invoking Noel Clarke's work and the film has set its sights too high.
Noel Clarke is a much better actor, writer and director than anyone involved with Shank. Instead, this is a film from music-video director Mo Ali,...

In a fight for family film faces, Emma Thompson's Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang joined previews of How to Train Your Dragon in knocking off Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland from the top UK box office spot
The family face-off
Easter is still a few days away, but the contest for the seasonal family box office is already well under way. Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang opened on more than 500 screens, knocking off Alice in Wonderland from the top spot in its fourth weekend of play. But it was a close-run thing, Nanny's £2.59m comparing with Alice's £2.50m. Both films might have been stronger had they not faced additional competition on Saturday and Sunday from paid previews of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon.
The Nanny McPhee result compares with an almost-identical opening of £2.60m for the original film in 2005. Given the brand recognition established by the original film,...

(Jessica Hausner, 2009, Aus/Fra/Ger) Sylvie Testud, Léa Seydoux, Elina Löwensohn. 99 mins
Handsomely photographed and coolly observant, this excursion to the French pilgrimage town manages to be both a penetrating study of the spiritual tourism racket and a genuine mystical inquiry. Testud is our central pilgrim, paralysed from the neck down and, like many others, in search of a miracle. But unlike those others, she gets one. Or does she? We're given much to think about.
No One Knows About Persian Cats (12A)
(Bahman Ghobadi, 2009, Iran) Negar Shaghaghi, Ashkan Khoshanejad. 107 mins
A suitably guerrilla-style tour of Iran's underground (often literally) music scene – a place where even gentle indie rock is considered seditious. Mostly factual and shot illegally, it's eye (and ear)-opening stuff.
The Blind Side (12A)
(John Lee Hancock, 2009, Us) Sandra Bullock, Quinton Aaron. 128 mins
Bullock might have got her Oscar but that doesn't make it any...
