In the manga and light novel business, where sales success usually means creative compromise, standing firm on artistic integrity is a rarity. Most writers are forced to prioritize market trends and fan expectations over their personal vision.

2012 was a big year for isekai stories. Tappei Nagatsuki’s Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- series began serialization in April via the Shosetsuka ni Narou (Let’s Become a Novelist) platform. The Sword Art Online anime premiered in July. These popular projects (as well as others like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation ) spread awareness of the growing genre across anime and manga fandom. What is less known, though, is that one of the most beloved isekai works of 2012 was a computer game. Zakuzaku Actors starts unassumingly. Thankfully Delichi has the powerful Pandora’s Key, allowing her to travel all over the world. So she and Rosemary go on a quest to recruit allies for their Hagure Kingdom. Not every anime needs to speed-run its ending and never give its audience a break to really soak in the story. Sometimes, it's a much more enjoyable experience when an anime takes its time to flesh-out its characters, world, and story. A slow burn story might turn some potential fans away that prefer a more speedy plot, but a lot of nuance can be lost if the plot is running at breakneck speed.
Anime that takes the time to appreciate the finer details at a slower pace can offer an escape and balance the plot with a lot of characterization and even world-building. Not every anime needs to be told at a slow pace, however, but those that offer a wholly different experience than typical shōnen or seasonal series such as a slice-of-life. Ultimately, pacing dictates everything and there are a particular few anime that have told unforgettable stories without sacrificing time.

English dubs have always been a subject for debate among the anime community, as bad voice acting can often affect the quality of a series (fans shudder at the mention of 4Kids' rendition of One Piece). And for those who prefer to watch their shows in English, an anime's watchability largely hinges on the performance of the cast chosen to translate the heart and soul of the story.
With better scripts, the rise of a new generation of talents, and veteran voice actors honing their skills, the stigma against dubbed anime is slowly disappearing. More efforts have been put into enhancing the quality of dubs, and thus, they have improved significantly in recent years. This past year has been one full of English dubs that not only contributed to expanding their anime's audience to the West but also rivaled the talents of the series' original cast.

Isekai is one of the most popular and oversaturated genres anime has ever seen. Many isekai, such as Re:Zero or Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, follow the standard blueprint of a character being transported to another world, often filled with magic, mythical creatures, knights and a medieval setting. However, not all series follow this blueprint.
Some shows take a unique perspective on the isekai genre away from the fantasy world. From futuristic dystopias to modern-day Japan, anime like Ya Boy Kongming! and Ascendance of a Bookworm offer a twist on the isekai genre and prove that a journey to another world can be just as thrilling without dragons and sorcery.

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation season one left big shoes to fill for its successive season. Rudeus' journey in the first season was action-packed and fraught with emotion, but the second season took a more relaxed approach. Viewers may have expected the same level of action and intrigue, but season two had a different tone and style leaving certain audience members let down in comparison to what they'd come to expect.
Some of Mushoku Tensei's strongest suits were left behind in favor of a new style that strayed away from the original vision that received so much positive attention in the first place. The second season showed flaws in both storytelling and technical aspects that can be hard for many people to look past when trying to appreciate the moments of brilliance that are still present in the series. From issues with pacing, characters, plot, and animation, Mushoku Tensei season two...

Shonen Jump's latest hit anime, Dandadan, features a "gruff" yet compassionate female lead named Momo Ayase. In a recent interview, Shion Wakayama, who voices Momo in the series, explained how she prepared for the ultimate "dream" role.
In Dandadan, high school classmates "Okarun" and Momo Ayase discover that their world is full of chaotic paranormal and supernatural entities. In spite of their contrasting personalities, the two team up to help one another survive. Per Mantan Web, Wakayama describes how Momo often uses "abusive language" while interacting with Okarun. "Before I participated in Dandadan, I had never raised my voice or shouted in an episode," she admitted. "...I think this is the first time we've heard such a gruff voice, and I also get to say some abusive language and catchphrases that I could only say in this work."

Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is one of the best isekai series of all time. It features one of the biggest and richest worlds in isekai, great, well-rounded characters, and an incredibly divisive main character in Rudeus Greyrat. The story of Mushoku Tensei spans Rudy's entire life, starting with his reincarnation into the new world as a baby and leaving no stone unturned. Rudeus begins the story as a baby, eventually goes to magic college, and even begins a family of his own. While not many other animes are like it, there are a few that could be considered worthy comparisons.
To be a good Mushoku Tensei comparison, a show doesn't need to be an isekai, but it doesn't hurt. The biggest qualities a series in common with Mushoku Tensei would have would be its thorough worldbuilding, a great cast of side characters, and a deep, meaningful story that doesn't leave...

Isekai is a rare genre of anime that gives its characters a chance to get stronger in another world. While they can't do much on Earth, characters like Tanya von Degurechaff can be reincarnated into their new worlds with amazing magical abilities. Other characters, like Ghislaine Dedolida from Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, are already walking armies without the need for an after-death boost. No matter if they're from Earth or the new world, there are some incredibly powerful women in isekai.
Powerful women in isekai animes come in all shapes and sizes. Some are big, powerful sword-swingers who could bisect their enemies in an instant. Others are smaller, letting their magic handle battles for them. The strongest are both, combining rare magical abilities with an insane physical prowess to create the ultimate fighter on any battlefield.

Some anime moments are so shocking, they can barely be explained. Anime can have some of the biggest, most unexpected moments that nobody could have seen coming, either for better, or more often, for worse. Shocking moments in anime are rarely good. Once they happen, it's usually impossible to return to a normal time. Everything changes in shocking anime moments in an instant. Whether Paul Greyrat from Muskhou Tensei wants to save his son or Madara gets betrayed in Naruto: Shippuden, shocking moments can be permanent.
There are countless series willing to push their viewers to their emotional limits. Some shows, like Dragon Ball Z, are relatively straightforward, making their shocking moments hit even harder for their infrequency. No matter how often shocking moments happen, they're always devastating, leaving the main cast of characters with an entirely new situation in their hands.

Elves are a fictional race known for their long ears, colorful hair, and affinity for powerful magic. While not every elf falls under that umbrella, the best elves in anime can be some of the most helpful characters around. They're usually much older than the characters around them, thanks to elves' ability to age much slower than humans, and can bring a lot of wisdom to their respective series. Each elf has a distinct personality too.
Some elves, like Elinalise Dragonroad from Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation are the first to head into battle, charging in with a sword in hand. Other elves, like Frieren from Frieren, would rather sit back and let her warrior Stark handle it instead. No matter what type of elf is in a series, they usually add a visible level of stoicism and intelligence to every party they're in.

In anime as it is in reality, the theater is a stage of life. It’s where identities and connections are forged, where rivalries are played out for all to see, where young love is won and lost and, in one particular instance, where the very nature of storytelling is at its rawest. You’ve likely seen a class deliver a rendition of Romeo and Juliet or The Tale of Urashima Taro at the school culture festival more than once, but these titles own the spotlight when it comes to putting on a whole show about drama in the truest sense of the word. Whatever your theatrical preference — naturalism, revue, rakugo (a form of Japanese verbal comedy), 2.5D or improv — anime has you covered in multiple genres. A3! Welcome, readers, to Late to the Party , a column that's right on time when it comes to catching up on anime everyone's already watched. This column addresses a universal truth in regard to being an anime fan: an anime backlog is quite the powerful beast. Many of us have one, where we amass more and more content we have designated in the "planning to watch" category. How and why it takes so long to actually address this task varies from person to person, but the gratification of finally allocating the time is really quite splendid. Occasionally, it’s by watching a classic anime from yesteryear that you’ve had your eye on for quite some time. In other instances, it’s a more recent premiere that just slipped by. I’ve been rather sedentary this month, so I wanted to watch an anime that I could relate to — and potentially,...

In various anime worlds, Sailor Moon's survival depends on her powers from the Silver Crystal, but her personality may present challenges. Sailor Moon would struggle academically in My Hero Academia but would excel as a Pro-Hero with her Silver Crystal quirk. Her Silver Crystal can be used to transform criminals into good people or heal the dark energy of individuals. However, the Silver Crystal could put her in danger because she can be a threat to several anime worlds, like Psycho-Pass and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation.
Sailor Moon is overpowered due to her possession of the Silver Crystal. The Silver Crystal has healing properties and can purify dark energy within people. Thus, it is easy to assume that in any anime world, she can use the Silver Crystal to purify an enemy, making her chances of survival extremely high.
However, there are anime worlds where her chance of survival is low.

Spoilers for Mushoku Tensei ahead.
The fantasy world Rudeus Greyrat once a jobless and overweight man, living a reclusive life before dying and being reincarnated lives in is full of epic swordfighting and sorcery, making Mushoku Tensei one of the best reincarnation isekai anime series. The worldbuilding in Mushoku Tensei is also well-thought-out, with the series set in the 'Six-Faced World', with each face ruled by a different God and inhabited by different races.
Two races in particular have had terrible clashes in Mushoku Tensei's past. The Human-Demon Wars play an important part of the franchise's history and potentially play an important role in Rudeus Greyrat's future. Anime history is full of excellent fantasy series, from gritty sagas like Berserk to exciting magic-laden isekai adventures like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Due to the genre's immense depth, many great fantasy shows have slipped through the cracks, being overshadowed by titles with more advertising or pre-release hype. One example of this is Claymore, as despite being an excellent dark fantasy tale, it often gets overlooked when fans talk about the genre.
Claymore is based on the manga written and illustrated by Norihiro Yagi, the artist who also created Angel Densetsu and the long-running Ariadne in the Blue Sky. Battles in Mushoku Tensei are pivotal, showcasing character growth & emotion through intense conflicts. Rudeus vs. Orsted and other significant fights emphasize growth, strategy, & challenges faced by characters. Eris vs. Cliff, North Emperor, among other fights, highlight skill, determination, & development of warriors in the series.
Out of the many amazing anime in the industry, few series have captivated audiences like Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. While the series is mostly known for its well-developed characters and intricate story, Mushoku Tensei is equally celebrated for its exhilarating battles that are full of strategy, emotion, and sheer spectacle.

Jobless Reincarnation season 2 premiered on July 3, 2023, and was split into two parts, with the second half concluding one year later, capping off a stellar season for isekai anime.
