True crime has been a very popular genre for a while now, so it's not surprising that a genuinely horrifying real-life case — which occurred in Austria and came to light in 2008 — served as inspiration for two (admittedly different) movies. So, if you've seen the 2021 Lifetime original film "Girl in the Basement," what is it about ... and how does it connect to real-life events?
Released in 2021, "Girl in the Basement" stars Stefanie Scott as Sarah Cody, a rebellious teenager who's seeing a boy named Chris (Jake Etheridge) and sneaks out to meet up with him against the wishes of her extraordinarily strict father Don. After she returns home, having been out all night, Don does something horrific; he imprisons his own daughter in the soundproofed basement of the Cody family home, unbeknownst to her mother Irene (Joely Fisher) and sister Amy...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Lifetime movie Boy in the Walls!
This article mentions abuse and graphic violence.
Sometimes there's nothing better than a Lifetime movie like Boy in the Walls, and it's even better if they're based on a true story. Recent movies based on true stories like Girl in the Basement show how the network handles ripped-from-the-headlines stories and makes them gripping television, but this mystery is so twisted it seems like a work of Hollywood fiction. The movie begins with Alisa (Ryan Michelle Bathe) who, while still adjusting to the role of stepmother to her husband Chris's children, moves from a busy life in Manhattan to rural Connecticut and begins to feel like someone may be watching them from inside the house.
While her husband is busy with work all the time, things around the house get moved or misplaced, food gets eaten, and she...

Emma Myers is known for her quirky, optimistic roles, but she recently gave a different performance. Myers players an intense, determined character named Pip in A Good Girl's Guide to Murder. The series highlights Myers' versatility as an actress and showcases her range.
Despite having appeared in numerous projects, such as The Baker and the Beauty (2020), Dead of Night (2020), and Girl in the Basement (2021), Emma Myers found her breakthrough role in Netflix's Wednesday. Myers took on the role of bubbly, quirky Enid Sinclair, the perfect foil to protagonist Wednesday Addams, played by Jenna Ortega. With her colorful hair, cheerful outfits, and upbeat personality, Myers' character brought some much-needed vibrancy to the otherwise gloomy, supernatural Wednesday storyline.

Girl in the Basement is a shocking movie based on the true story of Elisabeth Fritzl, who was held captive and tortured by her father for 24 years. The Girl in the Basement movie is a milder version of the horrifying events that actually took place, with changes made to the timeline and names of those involved. Elisabeth and her children now live in an undisclosed location under protection, receiving therapy to help them process the trauma inflicted by Josef Fritzl.
Contains discussion of graphic torture and abuse.

Girl in the Basement is part of Lifetime's "Ripped From the Headlines" collection, about Sara, a teenager who gets imprisoned by her father, Don, in their basement. In order to cover his tracks, Don concocts a story for his wife, Irene, about Sara running away.

The Lifetime movie Girl in the Basement takes some liberties with the true story of Elisabeth Fritzl, changing names, locations, and adding failed escape attempts for dramatic effect. The addition of a romantic interest for Sarah in the film, Chris, adds unnecessary fluff to a story that should focus on strength and survival, rather than romantic love. The real Elisabeth and her children now live in a secret location under new names, and little is known about their lives today, although reports have surfaced about Elisabeth marrying her bodyguard.

The Last Thing Mary Saw begins with an ominous quote from John Calvin, “All events whatsoever are governed by the secret counsel of God.” And God, or a twisted interpretation of His words, will have a large part to play in the events that unfold before us.
It’s December 3rd 1843 in Southold, New York. A young woman, Mary, is being interrogated about a series of deaths at her family home. A blindfold covers the two empty sockets where her eyes used to be so she doesn’t see the rifles aimed at her as she tells her story.
Mary is the daughter of a wealthy family. It’s also a repressively devout one and her life has little joy apart from her relationship with her maid Eleanor. A relationship that brings disapproval and harsh punishment from her family,...

Matthew Modine is running for president of SAG-AFTRA again as the leader of Membership First, the union’s opposition party. Joely Fisher, a former national board member, is running for secretary treasurer as his running mate.
Modine was defeated for the presidency by Gabrielle Carteris in a highly contentious election in 2019. In that race, Carteris received 13,537 votes to Modine’s 10,683, with a third candidate, former SAG-AFTRA secretary-treasurer Jane Austin, receiving 5,048 votes. Only 21.2% of the union’s eligible members cast ballots last time.
“The union spends exorbitant amounts of our own members’ money attempting to convince us that our contracts have been successfully negotiated,” Modine said. “The truth is they fall far short of the economic conditions facing performers today. I’m running to ensure that each of the locals across the United States are truthfully and transparently represented.
“One of the biggest issues on the minds of our membership today...

Elisabeth Röhm’s new Lifetime movie “Girl in the Basement” is “a call to action about abuse on a very significant level,” the director told TheWrap.
The film stars Judd Nelson as a father who locks his daughter (played by Stefanie Scott) in the basement for 20 years, raping and assaulting her, and even fathering multiple children with her. Meanwhile, her mom and sister live upstairs and believe she ran away to start a new life away from them.
To many, this story might ring a bell. In 2008, Elisabeth Fritzl told Austrian police she had been held captive by her father for 24 years, which resulted in the birth of seven children who remained in captivity with her. While “Girl in the Basement” takes elements from the Fritzl case, Röhm said there were actual multiple stories that inspired the screenplay for her movie.

The Lifetime network is hitting a major milestone with their series of original movies “ripped from the headlines”: This year, the network celebrates its 400th “Ripped From the Headlines” feature with the one-two punch of “The Long Island Serial Killer: A Mother’s Hunt for Justice” and “Girl in the Basement.”
Deborah Norville, reporter and executive producer for “The Long Island Serial Killer,” said during the network’s Ctam Winter 2021 Press Tour that the stories they are telling are ones she covered as an anchor or reporter with “Inside Edition.” She was frustrated covering them on the air because of the lack of time available to delve into the cases. “We [were] just not able to get to the nuance,” she said. “Their lives have been upended in the most horrific…way. We don’t get the opportunity to tell the stories fully and completely [in news].” When she and Lifetime started conversing...
