Goofs
When the captain is locked up, his aide Querejeta is promoted to acting captain. However, Querejeta is always described as non-commissioned officer ("suboficial") while Hoffman is a 2nd-class officer ("oficial de segunda"). Hoffman thus outranks Querejeta and, barring any unexplained issue, should have been promoted to acting captain.
