The Audition was written in response to the passing of writer-director Bizhan Tong's mentor from Covid.
Set and filmed during the 2020 pandemic, The Audition is one of the few international co-productions to be shot around the world with scenes shot in the UK, Hong Kong, Italy, the USA, and Japan.
The characters of Larry and Joel are named after Larry Cohen and Joel Schumacher, the writer and director of 'Phone Booth' respectively.
The title page of the script Larry Boyle auditions for is listed as being written by Veronica Q. That name can be seen as a combination of Joel Schumacher's 'Veronica Guerin' and Larry Cohen's 'Q', or as a reference to the lead character in Tong's 'The Escort' and QAnon.
