Birdemic: Shock and Terror

Emilia Clarke Starred In A Truly Awful Dinosaur Movie Before Game Of Thrones
Image
Emilia Clarke's breakthrough role in "Game of Thrones" is also her most recognizable performance to date. Daenerys Targaryen, who was primarily perceived through artist sketches or fandom headcanons before the HBO series premiered, is now synonymous with Clarke's unforgettable portrayal of the character. To portray a fierce, ambition-fueled Westerosi ruler hiding a tempered vulnerability is no easy feat, but Clarke stepped into the shoes of a young, frightened Daenerys and etched her evolution into the Mother of Dragons, whose righteous wrath shook the foundations of the world so accustomed to male rulers and their whims.

Of course, then came the controversial eighth and final season of the show, which butchers Daenery's brilliant complexity in a matter of minutes, where her fate is engulfed in madness and betrayal in the most heartbreaking ways. Clarke remains compelling even during these narratively dubious moments, imbuing her arc with tragic urgency in...

One Awful Subgenre Completely Dominates IMDb's Worst Movies List
Image
The list of the IMDb's 250 top-rated films is an interesting peek into the minds of IMDb users. The people who log onto IMDb to give ratings seem to be, collectively, very fond of movies about criminals, prisoners, or war. There is also a heavy violent-fantasy contingent. Almost all the films on the list are about men, masculinity, and male concerns. The ten highest-rated films on the top-250 list include titles like "The Shawshank Redemption," "The Godfather," "The Lord of the Rings," "Pulp Fiction," and "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly."

Of course, the 100 worst-rated films on IMDb is more of a mixed bag. Great films tend to be the movies that many audience members and critics agree are great. Bad films tend to be individually uncovered discoveries, oddball outliers that no one wants to talk about. Classics bring communities together. Bad films feel deeply personal.

Films can be bad for many,...

Horror is one of the hardest genres to nail down, as even a minuscule mistake could result in a horrific film, and that too not in a good way. The films on this list have also made the same mistake, but in their case, it was not a minor one, as after watching them, it feels like the director had two choices and he always chose the wrong one. So, as a public service, we compiled this list of horrible horror films that are currently available on Prime Video, so that you, our reader, can avoid them.

'Birdemic' Is an Alfred Hitchcock Ripoff That Is So Bad It's a Masterpiece
Image
When it comes to "so bad it's good" movies, there's a small but elite group that transcends their bad writing, stiff performances, and technical ineptitude to become something greater than the sum of their incompetent parts. Some, like Tommy Wiseau's infamous The Room, miss their intended mark so widely that they hit another, completely unintended mark. Others, like 2019's Cats, have all the resources and star power in the world, but are so spectacularly ill-conceived that they succeed in spite of themselves.

But there are other movies that fail on pretty much every level imaginable, from acting to cinematography to sound design, creating a symphony of pain and discomfort that's like catnip to any lover of bad cinema. Movies like these are rarer than one might think, but one of the most infamous examples is celebrating its 15th birthday this month. That film is 2010's Birdemic: Shock and Terror,...

Is Metacritic's Worst-Rated 2024 Movie Worth Watching For Free?
Image
For those who decided that studio flicks like "Madame Web" or "Rebel Moon" were among the worst film of 2024, do I have some good news for you: they weren't even close. Some brave critics, or even braver explorers of the deep trenches of 2024's cinematic offerings may have much more dire stories for you, telling tales of Neil Marshall's dumb actioner "The Duchess," or Sean McNamara's embarrassing deification of Ronald Reagan in "Reagan." Have you even heard of the Nick Frost horror sitcom spoof "Krazy House," or the Netflix Biblical drama "Mary"?

The above-mentioned films all have one thing in common: they were voted among the ten worst films of the year, as gauged by Metacritic. Metacritic, for those who don't visit the website, is a film review aggregator. The site gathers together multiple professionally written reviews and boils each one down to a score of one to...

The Worst Movie Of All Time According To IMDb
Image
What makes a film "bad?" Well, for starters, these kinds of movies fail to have any redeemable qualities or their flaws prominently outweigh everything they have to offer. In fact, some legendarily bad movies are widely known because they're so terrible. I'm talking about the likes of Tommy Wiseau's "The Room" or 2010's "Birdemic: Shock and Terror." However, movies in this vein still offer something meaningful despite their nonsensical nature, as there's fun to be had with an egregiously bad premise. For example, a franchise like "Sharknado" induces plenty of unintended laughs, where the escalating events are so baffling and cringe-worthy that the films become an outlet for mindless entertainment.

But what about a movie that is insufferably, irredeemably bad? As in, so bad it's currently the lowest-rated film on IMDb with a rating of 1.9 out of 10? If you've never heard of 2008's "Disaster Movie," you're probably better off not knowing,...

10 Strangest Rip-Offs Of Great Horror Movies
Image
Rip-offs of horror movies often result in strange and low-quality versions of the originals. Some notable rip-offs include Birdemic: Shock and Terror, Offerings, and Dolly Dearest. Rip-offs of movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Quiet Place also exist, but often fail to capture the quality of the originals.

The horror genre is home to some great movies, but these have made way for some truly bizarre rip-offs, too. The world of horror gives a lot of creative freedom to filmmakers as there are countless villains, styles, and stories they can choose from, making way for some scary and engaging stories. Many horror movies have reached cult status and become some of the best of the genre due to their quality and scare factor – but the horror genre is also prone to rip-offs, and given the characters seen in this genre, they are often quite strange.

It’s...

Sharknado vs. Birdemic: Which Is the Schlockbuster King?
Image
When it comes to kitschy movies that are "so bad, they're good," there are perhaps no better examples than the infamous Sharknado movies. A film franchise created by the Syfy Channel, the series combined a ridiculous premise with even more dubious CGI, spawning a series that actually became quite popular. It's considered the nadir of animal-based horror movies by actual movie critics, though there is one definite contender to that throne.

Birdemic: Shock and Terror was a movie that released three years before Sharknado, and like Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, it turned everyday avians into squawking vehicles of horror. Both movies involve somewhat similar themes, not to mention laughable acting and some of the poorest CGI ever. Nevertheless, only one of them can be truly crowned as the best of their category, which conveniently might actually make them the worst. With Sharknado turning 10 years old, the time has come...

10 Directors With The Worst Rotten Tomatoes Records
Image
Rotten Tomatoes assigns low scores to some of the worst directors in cinema, including Dennis Dugan and Michael Bay. Some directors, like Ed Wood and Uwe Boll, have cult followings despite consistently receiving negative ratings. M. Night Shyamalan has a mixed record with some critically acclaimed films and others that receive unanimous negative reception.

The review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes lives up to its name by assigning some truly Rotten scores to some of the worst directors in cinema, ranging from frequent Adam Sandler collaborator Dennis Dugan to blockbuster auteur Michael Bay. The website notably offers an aggregate score from both critics and audiences, leading to some differences between the two groups. Then, there are also times when both critics and audiences have equal Rotten Tomatoes ratings, sometimes even with a perfect score of 100%. But in the case of a Rob Zombie or M. Night Shyamalan, both sides tend to join...

Camp Nightmare: The 10 Best Campy Horror Movies That Will Make You Scream (with Laughter)
Image
Welcome to Camp Nightmare, where we're about to embark on a wild adventure through the wacky world of campy horror movies. The moon casts an eerie glow on the haunted cabins, and the rustling leaves whisper tales of horror. Gather 'round the campfire, fellow thrill-seekers, as we invite you into the twisted world of camp. Not summer camp, but camp camp. These delectably cheesy flicks have achieved legendary status, eliciting uproarious laughter and spine-tingling cringes in equal measure.

Before we delve into the world of campy horror movies though, we should probably answer the question: What is camp? It's the B-movie that's loud and proud. The intentionally over-the-top horror movie that winks at the audience, saying, “Sure, we might be cheesy and predictable, but isn't that part of the bloody charm?” Camp is a whirlwind of blood-splattered delight, where rubber monsters and questionable dialogue collide in a gleeful explosion of entertainment.

‘Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle’ Trailer Takes Flight Ahead of Fantastic Fest World Premiere Next Month!
Image
Fantastic Fest is back for its seventeenth edition featuring killer teddy bears, man-eating sharks, elderly zombies, cocktail-serving robots, and Park Chan-wook… all under one roof.

The festival will once again take over the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, TX from September 22nd – 29th and one film taking flight will be Birdemic 3: Sea Eagle, the third film in James Nguyen‘s authentic so-bad-it’s-good franchise that will celebrate its World Premiere.

In the latest from Severin Films, the birds are back, and global warming has them roiled!

Interestingly, the press release teases that this is the “director’s cut” of his thrilling, romantic, and worthy sequel. James Nguyen will be in attendance.

Birdemic: Shock and Terror, which was somewhat of a revelation and easily one of the best bad movies ever made, was acquired out of a hilariously legendary screening in Park City, Utah during the Sundance Film Festival by Severin Films.

Newswire: Exclusive: RiffTrax takes on another Hitchcock clone from the director of Birdemic
The RiffTrax gang of Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbett are back again, this time taking on Replica, an as-yet-unreleased film from the writer/director of Birdemic: Shock And Terror, James Nguyen. The former Mystery Science Theater 3000 jokesters and director Ngyuen talked exclusively with The A.V. Club about Replica, intentional camp, and why filmmakers let these guys put their films through the wringer.

“There’s probably been some release for everything we’ve done,” Nelson says on the unprecedented move of taking on a film that’s never been released to the public. “We had a strong suspicion that Replica would be good. We heard from Mr. Ngyuen that, unlike his other films, this one was more of an immature vision and that made us lick our chops. ‘Wait a minute, there’s a film that’s worse than Birdemic?’”

According to Nguyen, Replica is “a story...

Get out your coat hangers, Birdemic 3 is on the way muthaf*ckas!
Man, Birdemic: Shock And Terror is one of my all-time favorite bad movies. It probably tops even The Room for me (and that's saying a lot). From the terrible, creepy romance between a Victoria Secret model (who got her gig from doing photos at a Rite-Aid) and her stalker; to the wooden "acting" of lead Alan Bagh, who has to be a faulty android trying to... ‘Birdemic’ Documentary: Vice Follows James Nguyen, The Director of The ‘Worst Movie Ever Made’
Elliot Page
In January 2009, software salesman James Nguyen traveled to the Sundance Film Festival to self-promote his low-budget independent horror film “Birdemic: Shock and Terror.” He handed out flyers from a beaten-up van with a stuffed bird on the antenna and covered with paper signs reading, “Bidemic.Com” (accidentally misspelled) and “Why Did The Eagles And Vultures Attacked?”

Word of mouth from horror movie websites spread around the festival and eventually the trailer was shown on G4’s “Attack of the Show.” In February of 2010, “Birdemic” had its Los Angeles premiere hosted by Tim & Eric, and it was soon picked up for distribution by Severin Films. It had a brief theatrical run in numerous cities in the United States and in Toronto, Canada from April through July.

‘Birdemic: Shock and Terror’ Blu-ray Review (Severin)
Stars: Alan Bagh, Whitney Moore | Written and Directed by James Nguyen

There are films that can be called “so bad they are good” and other bad films that are funny to watch for all the wrong reasons… What camp does Birdemic: Shock and Terror sit in? That’s for you to decide. With a story similar to The Birds, Birdemic tells the story of two lovers Rod (Alan Bagh) and Nathalie (Whitney Moore) who find themselves caught in the “Birdemic” with birds of prey suddenly attacking a small seaside town.

It is hard to defend Birdemic: Shock and Terror, it just isn’t a good movie. I can see why some may champion it as being so bad its good, but it didn’t fit that category for me. This review isn’t going to be me bashing it though, because that would be unfair. Why would you consider purchasing the Blu-ray?...

Kirk Cameron Film Named Worst Ever
The recent "Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas" has officially become the the worst movie of all-time according to the film database site The IMDb. 4,918 users have voted in the poll with the movie pulling a 1.5/10 rating, overtaking the legendarily terrible "Birdemic: Shock and Terror" at 1.8/10.

The faith-based "Saving Christmas" stars Kirk Cameron and Darren Doane in which the pair play brothers-in-law with Kirk's character showcasing to Doane's that various popular elements of Christmas are actually Biblical.

Cameron's film did not go well with critics, garnering a rare 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 18/100 on Metacritic - to be fair to Cameron, the woeful Ben Affleck comedy "Surviving Christmas" several years ago didn't score much better.

After the initial wave of critical reviews, Cameron took to social media to rally his fans for support by asking them to give the film a high public rating on Rotten Tomatoes. When word got...

Kirk Cameron's 'Saving Christmas' Voted Worst Movie Ever
Kirk Cameron
Christmas certainly hasn't come early for Kirk Cameron. Not only has his latest effort Kirk Cameron's Saving Christmas been deemed the worst movie of the year, and the worst holiday movie ever, it has reached the dubious distinction of being voted worst movie ever. That is quite a huge achievement, but not one we're sure he was aiming for.

The movie, which follows Kirk as he takes his brother-in-law "Christian" on a tour to explain why Christmas is still a Christian holiday, was voted worst movie ever according to IMDb's charts, which is determined by users. The film has received 1.5 stars, which plummeted it all the way to the bottom quite quickly, replacing Birdemic: Shock and Terror as the worst movie of all time. That film has held onto the crown since its release in 2010.

For a movie to appear in IMDb's bottom 100, a movie has to have at least 1,500 ratings.

40 Things We Learned from the ‘Ed Wood’ Commentary
With the popularity of films like The Room, Birdemic: Shock and Terror, and Sharknado (now with a 2 behind it!), it seems that some people tend to like bad movies more than they like good ones. However, long before Tommy Wiseau or James Nguyen were directing films, and before Tara Reid was even born, there was a magical man named Edward D. Wood, Jr. Even with his terrible sense of plot, sequence and cinematic structure, Ed Wood managed to give his own flavor to his films, culminating in the granddaddy of all bad movies: Plan 9 From Outer Space. In 1994, Tim Burton directed Ed Wood, telling the story of the infamous director and how his friendship with horror movie legend Bela Lugosi helped breathe some life into both of their careers. The 2004 DVD release of the film includes a commentary with Burton, edited together with his filmmaking cohorts, which delivers a comprehensive look at the film’s creation...

Franco Makes A Film About "The Room"
Rabbit Bandini Productions has optioned the rights to "The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room" by actor Greg Sestero which deals with the 2003 micro budget cult film "The Room" which some call the worst movie ever made (fans of "Birdemic: Shock and Terror" may disagree).

Sestero co-wrote the film with Tommy Wiseau who directed, produced and financed the film. Sestero also starred in the movie as Wiseau’s best friend, Mark. Self-released only in Southern California, word-of-mouth spread and it quickly became a cult midnight show regular due to its terrible acting, bad production values and gaping plot holes.

Franco will direct and co-produce the book adaptation from a script by Ryan Moody. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will produce and it's likely James and Dave will take on key roles onscreen.

James Franco’s has optioned book and life rights to The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room,...

2013 Sydney Underground Film Festival: Official Lineup
The 7th annual Sydney Underground Film Festival, which runs this year on September 5-8 at the Factory Theatre, opens with a real bang when they will screen cult filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky’s latest cinematic odyssey, The Dance of Reality. This is Jodorowsky’s first film in over twenty years and is an imaginative and playful quasi-autobiography.

The rest of the four-day celebration is packed with more film oddities and excursions into surreal and transgressive territory. One particular highlight that is not to be missed is Don Swaynos’ incredibly crowd-pleasing comedy Pictures of Superheroes, about a slacker cleaning woman’s descent into an absurd world she can’t escape. Read the Underground Film Journal’s review of Pictures of Superheroes here.

Other twisted fiction films screening include Drew Tobias’s sick and twisted See You Next Tuesday, Cody Calahan’s apocalyptic Antisocial and Lloyd Kaufman’s highly-anticipated sequel Return to Nuke ‘Em High: Vol.

Hilariously Bad Trailer for Birdemic 2: The Resurrection
Have you seen the movie Birdemic: Shock and Terror? Well, it's gloriously awful, and unless you enjoy watching movies that are so bad they're good, it's hard to recommend. The script, story, acting, and special effects are all just utterly terrible, but the movie has managed to gain a cult following, and director James Nguyen is back with a laughably bad sequel called Birdemic 2: The Resurrection.

A platoon of eagles and vultures attack Hollywood, California. Why did the eagles and vultures attack? Who will survive?

If you've got 3 minutes to kill you can see for yourself how ridiculously bad this movie looks.

New Birdemic 2: The Resurrection Poster Sets Hollywood on Fire
The glory of the original Birdemic: Shock and Terror (review here) still warms our heart with its insanity, and from what we gather, Birdemic 2: The Resurrection more than recaptures the lunacy. That being said, dig on the new artwork!

The squawking fan gets the sequel – two months sooner than expected. The highly anticipated film ‘Birdemic 2: The Resurrection,’ written and directed by the Master of Romantic Thrillers™ James Nguyen, will be flying into select major cities worldwide in April 2013.

In response to an unexpectedly large number of fans being cuckoo for these killer birds, the film’s production company, I Got a Fish Productions, turned down standard distribution deals at the last minute to remain independent and push the self-theatrical distribution of ‘Birdemic 2: The Resurrection’ ahead of its previously anticipated June 2013 release date.

Exclusive: Birdemic II: The Resurrection Flies into Theatres Early!
Here's some news that will ruffle your feathers! The sequel to Birdemic: Shock and Terror (review here), entitled Birdemic II: The Resurrection, will begin hitting theatres early; and we've got the first word! Read on for details.

From the Press Release:

“The main reason behind our decision to bypass traditional distribution was simply to get...

Best of Bad Cinema – ‘Birdemic’
Birdemic: Shock and Terror

Written by James Nguyen

Directed by James Nguyen

USA, 2008

You have to respect an artist with a vision. Sometimes they make Dances With Wolves or The Passion of the Christ and are rewarded critically and commercially for their risky works of passion. Other times you get James Nguyen’s notorious 2008 film Birdemic. The film is an homage to Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds and Al Gore’s Oscar winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Shot largely on weekends and funded completely by Nguyen’s day job as a software salesman in Silicon Valley, the film is actually quite magical for bad movie fans due to the tonal shift midway through. It’s kind of like two awesomely bad movies for the price of one!

The first half of the film focuses on the wooing of Victoria Secret model Nathalie (Whitney Moore) by leading man Rod (Alan Bagh...

Birdemic 2: it'll be poultry in motion
Films as bad as Birdemic: Shock and Terror aren't supposed to get sequels, but if James Nguyen can keep the acting poor, the sound abysmal and the humour intact, it'll be another classic

Made on a reported budget of $10,000 (£6,385), Birdemic: Shock and Terror quickly vaulted into the highest echelons of the best worst films ever made upon its 2010 release. Thanks to Birdemic's trailer – largely comprised of a scene where several almost-actors listlessly flap their arms at a handful of stock-still Commodore 64 maybe-eagles – the film immediately joined the likes of The Room and Sharktopus; films best watched drunk at 3am when your brain has lost the power to process competency.

And thanks to all this notoriety, there's going to be a Birdemic sequel. According to Dreadcentral, Birdemic 2: The Resurrection will be released in June, with screenings all over the world. This is uncharted territory. Films as bad as Birdemic aren't supposed to get sequels.

Birdemic II: The Resurrection Spreads its Wings in June
A little bird dropped by our mailbox to let us know that the sequel to Birdemic: Shock and Terror (review here), entitled Birdemic II: The Resurrection, will begin hitting theatres in June with screenings being held everywhere from Los Angeles to Paris, France. Said bird then exploded, much to our delight.

We'll have all of the official details for you as soon as possible. Just wanted to give you guys enough of a heads-up so that you can prepare your hangers.

Visionary writer/director James Nguyen said his inspiration for the film was the La Brea Tar Pits. “I went to the museum at the Tar Pits, which had an exhibit of ancient eagles and vultures,” he recalled, “and as I walked through it, I said, ‘This is Birdemic 2.’” He added, “The Tar Pits are a major hint why the birds attack La.”

“As a rabid fan of the original...

IGN then stepped in and urged its users to visit the site and vote. After several weeks, over 500,000 people voted and RiffTrax now has a list consisting of 25 movies. Taking first place is "The Twilight Saga" with 35,593 votes. "Batman and Robin" took second place, followed by "Catwoman." ‘Birdemic 2: The Resurrection’ Trailer
Today’s biggest hits are often big-budget spectacles like The Hunger Games and The Dark Knight Rises that utilize a combination of acting talent, compelling drama and a sharp visual aesthetic to craft a story that audiences can lose themselves in.

Then, there are other films that – despite an obvious lack of all of the above – remain entertaining for the sheer absurdity of it all. To many audiences, these films are so bad they’re good, and it is in this camp that Birdemic 2: The Resurrection clearly calls home.

Courtesy of IMDb, the first trailer for the sequel to 2010’s Birdemic: Shock and Terror (as discussed on our Screen Rant Underground podcast) is now available. “Master of the romantic thriller” James Nguyen returns to ...

Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton in Batman (1989)
Did The Aurora Shootings Ruin Midnight Movies?
Jack Nicholson and Michael Keaton in Batman (1989)
Los Angeles -- Midnight movies are supposed to be fun.

They're supposed to be giddy gatherings of the most excited fans who can't wait to have the images flicker across their faces first – whether it's at a 12:01 a.m. showing of a wildly anticipated blockbuster or infamous schlock that's achieved a cult following and is best viewed during the weird, wee hours.

That thrill was shattered early Friday morning when a man unleashed his arsenal upon an audience at the first showing of the hotly awaited new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises," at a theater in Aurora, Colo., killing at least 12 and injuring 58 others.

It's still unclear what the motive might have been for the suspect, 24-year-old James Holmes – whether the time or the content of the film itself might have been factors in this deadly spree. But for now, the purity of that sense of enthusiasm – both...

First Teaser for Birdemic II: The Resurrection, Sequel to the ‘Best Worst Film of 2010’
2010’s Birdemic: Shock and Terror currently stands tall with an impressive 1.9 on IMDb, and despite critics largely panning it as one of the worst films they’ve ever seen – and, in some cases, the best worst film of the year – writer-director James Nguyen is back for more.

The first teaser spot has been put up over at Yahoo Movies ahead of the film, director, and cast’s appearance at Comic-Con this Friday – the 13th – and if you’re going and want in, head over to the film’s Facebook to sign up to their event (for 21+).

“Bill is a struggling filmmaker; Gloria is an aspiring actress. Rod, a Silicon Valley millionaire finances Bill’s film, a dream come true until eagles and vultures attack Hollywood and its up to Rod, his girlfriend Nathalie, new friends and old to mount the resistance. Who will survive?”

I’ll admit that I didn’t catch the original,...

Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore have officially signed on to reprise their characters along with many other familiar characters from Half Boon Bay that are set to return. While showing off his mastery of the romantic thriller, director James Nguyen will be introducing two new characters as well, and while we can't drop the plot bombshell we learned of on you guys just yet, we can tell you that Nguyen has raised the stakes this time; and you, my fellow sickos, are in for one hell of a crazed and very romantic experience.

Birdemic II: The Resurrection Teaser Trailer
James Nguyen's Birdemic: Shock and Terror is one of those "so bad it's good" movies that has built up a reputation over the past couple of years through screenings and word of mouth. Praised for its inept direction, atrocious special effects and terrible acting, the movie was Nguyen's attempt to pay tribute to Hitchcock's The Birds. The resulting film has been mentioned in the same breath as such cult classics as Troll 2 and The Room, and Tim and Eric even took a liking to it and helped promote it as well. Two years later, a sequel is imminent... but does it matter that James Nguyen is now in on the joke? Birdemic II: The Resurrection finds many of the same cast members returning to deal with another eagle and vulture attack... this time in Hollywood, California. The first teaser trailer has premiered online over at Yahoo! of all places,...

Top 7 Films I Wish I Could Watch Again for the First Time
We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

This week’s “Question of the Week” on Jeff Bayer’s “Movie B.S.” podcast is inspired by Brave — the first film by Pixar to have a lead female protagonist.

The discussion goes to other firsts, namely movie experiences. What movies do you wish you could watch again for the first time?

Here are my Top 7 movies, which include a whole bunch of significant movies with first-time experiences that will never be matched.

7. Psycho (1960)

Recap: Alfred Hitchcock made it forever unsafe to shower in motels and befriend handsome mama’s boys with this film, starring Janet Leigh and Anthony Perkins.

First Viewing Experience: By myself, in the dark, in my basement (Note: This was a very bad idea).

Reason: Many horror movies work best when you don’t really know what’s coming. And even with the pop culture sensation of this movie ruining its famous bits,...

Yahoo! Lists the 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die
It's not easy to put together a top 100 of just about anything, but the folks over at Yahoo! Movies have really thrown down the gauntlet this time with a list of the 100 Funniest Movies to See Before You Die. In describing the list, they maintain that their goal was to choose the "funniest" movies out there, not necessarily the "best" comedies. With that in mind, you might think they'd stay away from critically acclaimed classics and lean more toward low brow, quick and easy laughfests. But you'd be wrong. There are a lot of classics on this list, everything from The Apartment to Dr. Strangelove to Charlie Chaplin's Modern Times and Buster Keaton's The General. There are also movies on here that aren't really "comedies" per se, such as Pulp Fiction and Martin Scorsese's After Hours. More than anything, this serves as a reminder that what is...

Mighty Movie's Temple of Bad: Birdemic: Shock and Terror
It might've been a fever dream, but then, fever dreams tend to make more sense. I'd heard the legend of Birdemic: Shock and Terror -- a film allegedly so bad that it has rapidly become a contender for the worst film ever made -- but not until I sat down for a viewing did I realize how profoundly I would be transformed. Directed by the self-proclaimed "Master of the Romantic Thriller(Tm)", James Nguyen, the film tells the tale of two lovers (Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore) whose small, Northern California town becomes a front line in the ecological war when a flock of environmentally-conscious (not to mention surprisingly volatile) eagles and vultures decide to vent their fury with explosive, kamikaze attacks and acid-laced spit (or possibly poop -- it's hard to tell). Clearly a labor of love for its creator, who cites Hitchcock's The Birds as inspiration (and who...

Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore to Reprise Their Roles for Birdemic II
Screw the 2011 Academy Award Nominations — I just learned that Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore, the stars of James Nguyen’s cult sensation “Birdemic: Shock and Terror”, will reprise their roles for the sequel. “Birdemic II: Resurrection 3D” begins shooting on February 4th, 2012, which means that we may get the sequel sometime before the end of the year. Given the original’s loyal and dedicated following, I seriously doubt fans will have to wait as long for the flick to find a distributor. “Birdemic”, of course, is Nguyen’s beloved romantic thriller that follows the adventures of a young couple and their blood-soaked encounters with loads of murderous birds. If the follow-up is anything like the first installment, expect loads of cheap special effects, cringe-inducing performances, and a plot that makes little to no sense whatsoever. Sounds like a good time to me! The trailer for the original has been embedded...

Alfred Hitchcock and Tippi Hedren in Les Oiseaux (1963)
'The Birds' real-life mystery possibly solved. Does this mean it's safe to buy lovebirds?
Alfred Hitchcock and Tippi Hedren in Les Oiseaux (1963)
I was 7 years old when my mother first made me watch Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. The second I saw Suzanne Pleshette’s eyes gouged out by a murderous bird on Bodega Bay, I became petrified of even the most harmless hummingbirds. I only became more frightened learning that the film was inspired by real-life events, when birds on Monterey Bay began mysteriously flying into buildings in the early 1960s. And then I became even more terrified a few days later when a bird flew into my window and died.

But it’s likely I no longer have to live...
